  • BMW motorcycles use a threaded ring to clamp the exhaust pipe to the cylinder head, which over the years can corrode together. The thread is often stripped when it comes time to take it apart and this short series of videos show how I repaired one such head. In this first part I show the problem and the setting up to machine a repair.

Hello, i am trying to prepare a similar set-up to yours to fix several threads on vintage bmw cylinder heads, is there any way you can give me the dimensions of the base that holds the cylinder head in place? It would help a lot, thank you.

Thanks for watching and the question.
I will have to check but the angle plate is roughly a 6" one .
I will be in touch later with full dimensions.

The angle plate I used is 6 by 5 inch on one side and 6 by 4 1/2 on the other and came from Chronos via a local shop.
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask, if you don't get an answer within a day it will be because I didn't get notification.

@@chrisstephens6673 Thank you Chris, i checked out Chronos website, do you think i may be able to contact them and request the same? Will they recognize your name if i reference you? I think this might be easier than attempting to manufacture it from scratch in my country. Also maybe if you tell me how to request it? I assume BMW Cylinder head exhaust thread repair accessory won't mean much to them :P Thank you very much for your help.

@@ShrikeCult The angle plate should be available just about anywhere in the world as it is probably of Chinese origin, just look for one of the same dimensions.
Chronos would not know me by name and would have no clue about exhaust threads.
I do not know your machining experience but be warned it could go horribly wrong if care isn't taken.

@@chrisstephens6673 Thank you Chris, i am not planning to do the machining myself, i will have a professional do it. I just want to give him as much info as I can to make his life easier. I would not attempt any such work myself i have no experience in machining fabricating etc.
