I am a full time nature and wildlife photographer focusing on the variety of species of birds and mammals found in New England. It is my goal to share my experiences and knowledge with you about these many species so that we can work together to protect them for the future. Please join me in my journey to find and photograph the common and rare animals that live in this amazing area of the country.
I have a degree in fisheries and wildlife science from Oregon State University where I took many courses in ornithology, mammalogy, and ecology. I take the knowledge that I gained with this degree out into the field with me and I share this knowledge in my videos with you to help explain the behavior and needs of the animals that live in this area. I hope to spread an understanding of wildlife so that we can better be appreciate them and learn to coexist. I will be thrilled to have you along for the journey!

Photographing Waterthrush Part 1: How I Set Up for the Shot With Tips for success | Nikon Z9
In this video I take you along the banks of a beautiful forest brook to do some bird photography and search for the Louisiana Waterthrush. These are one of my favorite summer time birds in the area because they are so unique and a joy to watch and photograph. As always I take my Nikon Z9 with my 600mm lens out to capture the action. This is part 1 of this video series where I discuss my tips on finding the bird with an explanation of the habitat it prefers, and then I go into how I set up to get the shots that I am looking for. I part 2 of this mini series, I am able to capture some amazing moments without only the waterthrush, but also 2 families of common mergansers that go up and down the brook in front of me.

Sunrise Bird Photography with Tips on Photographing Birds in Flight | Nikon Z9
Переглядів 2,9 тис.16 годин тому
Today I headed out at sunrise to the floodplains of the Connecticut River to photograph birds using the Nikon Z9. It has been really hot, so I am hoping that an early start will result in a lot of bird activity, specifically so I can photograph birds in flight. This has always been a really productive habitat for wildlife photography where I have tested out the Nikon z9 autofocus in photographi...

Great video and your overall all approach to wildlife photography is spot on! Keep up the good work!
We got one in our creek in front of our house. We sit in the creek in lawn chairs and it will come right beside you and could careless we are even there. We don't move when it comes around, but our dogs are right on the banks and it doesn't care. Some times the further you go backup in the wilderness the more spooky and skittish they become. We have been way back in the woods to find some and they are more skittish for sure.
@ToddDeWaldPhotography your wildlife photos and videos are beautiful, amazing and inspiring.i myself take quite a few wildlife photos and i was wondering what brooks you go to,to take your videos and pictures at?
Great work, Todd! AWESOME video…WOW seeing the King Fisher!! Love your passion ….
Bro take a break from birds and have an haircut ☺️😘
Looks like next week will be really exciting! I love seeing the Common Merganser babies! They star in a couple of my upcoming videos too! I love how you show folks just how much patience is required for capturing wildlife photos!
Lovely video! Looking forward to next week!
Omg.. what a Beautiful video! You've really stepped up your video and audio quality! Absolutely Beautiful! Great Video! Great Work! Very Impressive!
يشبه بلبل ابيض الخدين
It does have very similar coloring! Thanks for watching
Thanks to the bugs that chewed the tree ❤
Bugs and probably some woodpeckers!
Love your work dude! Inspiration for myself! Wish i had your wildlife education, but stuck with the medical field!
Thanks for watching I appreciate it!
Даже самая грозная птица может быть пушистой булочкой😊
That's very true! Thanks for watching!
what type of display monitor are you using for your camera?
It is an Atomos Ninja V
So cool to see you and your approach in action. I live just 'up the road', NW of Boston, and am glad our heatwave is over!
Thanks for watching! Yes it has been brutal the past month especially since we are now just entering the hottest part of the year!
Interesting to see you purposely shooting into the sun. I actually avoid that. I feel the photos are harsh with a lot of contrast. This could be just my skill level. May I just need better post skills too. In my local wetland I tend to shoot the side without direct sun in the AM and the other side in the PM! I wish the wildlife would cooperate!
You kind of need to do it when the sun is still low in the sky. It gives you a different look to the image and you need to expose differently than if you're using side lighting but sometimes the results can be really dramatic! Thanks for watching!
Todd, you had an award winning morning with the king birds. Especially the shot of that one taking off from the perch and taking an insect out of the air and landing back on the perch with it. Congratulations on capturing a most unusual shot in great lighting!
Thanks I really appreciate it! I was just happy I was set up to capture it!
That Heron feeding was amazing! Great work!
Thank you I really appreciate it!
Those heron shots were incredible!
Thank you! I appreciate your watching!
Hey Todd, nice video. I was just there this morning at sunrise. Not sure when you recorded this but the water was much lower and a lot more vegetation's taken over. I was showing a new friend the area and good photo spots.. He really enjoyed the diversity of birds there. The trails on the other side of the tracks were overgrown so much I could not get to my favorite spot , will have to bring a machete next time. Take care and keep these videos coming!
Thanks for watching! This was actually recorded about 4 weeks ago, I'm a little behind on editing! It was getting pretty overgrown when I was there as well which is unfortunate. It is a great spot to see a lot of different species in one spot! Thanks as always for watching!
GREAT video as always!!!! Thanks for all your knowledge 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! They’ll hopefully be even more action this fall!
@@ToddDeWaldPhotographyYES!!!!
Was the heron flying by with its beak open a cooling mechanism, or is that something they commonly do (but I've never noticed)?
Yes that’s is possible. Birds will essentially pant like dogs when it is hot out. Thanks for watching!
beautiful footage, thanks for being awesome and sharing this! +your knowledge
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome so lovely video once again
Thank you! I really appreciate your support!
Full camo and maybe a full bottle of DEET for good measure.
Yes this is true. I wear a scarf that has bug repellent in it that works really well!
Photography of any type during inclement weather is very effective. The soft images and lighting are very appealing to the eyes. Giving your viewers a calming effect, plus here the soft wave sounds add even more depth and dimension, thank you for sharing this, very nice.
Thank you I really appreciate it! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful to watch, stunning footage! 🦉🤎 Greetings from a Swedish youtuber! 🇸🇪
Thanks for watching! I checked out your channel too really enjoyed the owls and the dippers! I know how you feel I have a 9 month old at home! Thanks again and keep up with your videos!
awesome video
Thank you!
I appreciate these kind of videos because honestly this is the type of bird photography we all do most.
Thanks for watching I really appreciate it!
Hi Todd, wow, your videos keep getting better and better! Sometimes we just don't realize how close we live to these wonderful areas! But take the time to enjoy all the beauty.
Thank you I really appreciate it! There are a lot of hidden gems out there!
WOW
Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful setting! Thanks for sharing your adventure! So peaceful and uplifting!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video. Thanks for taking me along!
Thanks for watching I really appreciate it!
Great video, Todd. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
Todd, I enjoyed your video very much, especially the Louisiana water thrush. I've only seen a few of them bathing in a small spring fed pool one time. I didn't have a camera with me that day and they never came back. But, I did get a decent picture of a Northern water thrush at Cross Creeks NWR. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and hope your audience continues to grow. Your quality is excellent. BTW, what is your frame rate in your slo mo BIF shots in this video? BTW, don't publicize the name of the area you photographed today. I used to have a place like that. Then it got turned into a park and loved to death.
That sounds like a great experience! We only get the northern waterthrushes passing through on migration here but they are great to see as well! For the slo mo I use 120 frames per second and the. Slow it down to 25% usually when editing to get the slo motion look. Yes I totally understand that. People don’t have much respect for preserves these days and I try to keep the places I go to hidden which is unfortunate but necessary for the wildlife. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Thanks for watching!
Nice intimate owl segment.
Thank you!
Saw my first Louisiana waterthrush while trout fishing in north Georgia today. Got within about 10 feet of me. Sure I’ve seen them flying around while fishing in the past and just didn’t notice them.
That sounds like a great experience. It is amazing how close you can get to things and what you see while you're fishing! Thanks for watching!
@@ToddDeWaldPhotography it was awesome. Beat when you’re not trying and it just happens. Like the three river otters I didn’t mention.
Haha that is always how it goes!
I love the wrens in northeast OH. I’ve seen the House, Carolina, and Marsh wren. We call the house wren, a loudmouth mini. Such a big song for a little bird! Does anyone else have kick names for their local birds?
Thanks for watching! They can be really loud haha but they are really impressive birds. My favorite is the nickname of the chimney swifts as flying cigars!
Awesome man . I just finished a barred owl documentary here in Connecticut too! Trailer: ua-cam.com/video/VFKM-97Bk6k/v-deo.htmlsi=4i-qPup16DJKDDOT
You mention the 'artistic picture taking process' that you'd rather do in the field with a 600mm. If that is so, you probably have quite approachable birds in your area, or you accept birds to be quite small in the frame. I use my 200-600 mostly at 600mm and mostly in (1.5x) crop mode, making it effectively 900 mm and still do a lot of cropping in post-processing. My camera doesn't have bird eye recognition (I'm not going to spend around $3000,- just for that) so I use my center focus point that I hardly ever move, so the birds I photograph are mostly right in the center and I still have the freedom to put the bird everywhere in the frame afterwards with cropping. Luckily my 60mp camera has a lot pixels to play with.
The birds definitely are not approachable near me but I tend to find a good spot to sit and wait allowing the birds to come loser to me. This is definitely something I suggest to allow you to get closer to your subjects and reduce the need to crop in all the time. Thanks for watching!
Hi Todd. I have one question. I too love taking bird pictures just like you. Now, I have a crop sensor camera Nikon D7500. Interestingly, if I go for a 400mm f/2.8 lens (which I am contemplating to buy) will there be any reduction in sharpness? Like when you use a 1.4x converter.
Thanks for the question. Using the 400 2.8 on a crop sensor will still retain all the quality of the lens and there will not be any loss of sharpness due to the crop sensor as often occurs with teleconverters. The loss of quality occurrs because you are adding an extra glass element between the camera and lens with a teleconverter which is not the case with using a crop sensor. This makes using a crop body like the D7500 a good option to use the 400. 2.8. You’ll have more effective focal length and have the 2.8 aperture!
@@ToddDeWaldPhotography Thank you Todd. That was very encouraging. I am surely going to buy one now.
Great video! Great job videoing all the different ducks. Also loved the music - very calming and relaxing.
Thank you for watching! I appreciate the comment!
Great job! Such a cool moment to have captured
Thank you glad you enjoyed!
Winter wrens might be my favorite bird, definitely top ten. Thank you for filming this!
Thank you! I think all wrens are fun to watch and photograph! They are just constantly moving and seem to have so much energy
Hermit Thrushes rock!
Haha yes they do!
Great job with the video. I had a similar experience with some Barred Owls and young about a week ago. Those are special times, for sure.
Thanks for watching! Any time with an owl is always amazing!
Excellent, peaceful video!
Thank you for watching!
you prefer 400 2.8 or 600 f ??
Right now I use the 600mm
Wren on single twig…priceless!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful footage. Our regional variant has been renamed Pacific Wren, but I still like to think of it as Winter Wren. It’s a favorite photo subject of mine in the Oakland Hills. I’ll never forget my first encounter; I was amazed that such a strong beautiful song came from such a tiny bird.
They really are fun to photograph and like you said it is amazing that such a song can come from such a tiny bird! Thanks for watching!
