  • Today I am really excited to be out, because it is my first time out with my new Nikon Z9. I have officially switched from Canon back to Nikon and I could not be more happy. Today I am back out in the forest exploring another preserve where I will be working to create a video for the Non-Profit that owns and manages the land. I was able to explore and get a feel for the property while searching for wildlife and while doing so, I was able to photograph a large flock of mixed birds in the forest and got some great photos and videos of them. Thanks for joining me and thank you for watching!

    My wife, when we first met, used canon. I held it and immediately didnt like it nor the button placement. Iv been a nikon shooter ever since feb 2013 when my buddy got me into it right after i got stationed in japan. He had nikon so i went with it, and after holding my wifes camera im so glad he had nikon back then haha she switched to nikon immediately after we got together because she, like me, never used a nikon and she immediately thought the nikon had a better feel and layout lol surprised canon doesnt try to fix the "feel" of their cameras

      Yeah it can be amazing the different feel of the systems. I guess it is all just preference! Thanks for watching!

    I don't know Todd, I may not be able to watch this channel anymore with you going back to Nikon.
    No, seriously, it's just like you said, it doesn't matter what brand you use. I don't watch your videos for the gear, so keep doing what you're doing. I do find it interesting that you like the feel of the Nikon better, whereas I'm the opposite. I worked for 10+ years in a camera store, so I handled Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. frequently and I always came back to Canon. I have said, and will continue to say, that if I were starting fresh today, I'd have a really tough choice in what brand to go with. They all have their positives and negatives, but in general offer great image quality.

      Well you never know, there are a lot of folks out there that get all offended when someone switches camera brands! Everyones hands are different I guess, that's why each brand has different layouts on the cameras. Thanks for watching as always and I appreciate the comment!

    Welcome back! 😂 I've enjoyed your videos regardless of what you use but its always a bonus when a favored content creator uses the same gear as you.
    You're storyboard, content and footage is always excellent and put together so nicely.

    Canon 1 dx Mark 3 feels better in my hands but I've always been a Canon Shooter and will likely Always but the I do own the R5 it's smaller and does a few things but I still shoot with the 1 DX Mark 3. Nikon never really appealed to me and thru the years I've had fun with my hobby! Where I live we have Cougars, Lynx, Black Bears and Grizzlies along with the Moose, Deer and 5 hours away Jasper National Park!

    I've been shooting with canon for many years. I am considering switching to a Nikon and the main reason for me is the overall image quality. Rich in colors without extra sharpness and a rich dynamic range. I also think that I prefer Nikon's philosophy on their lenses better. Since you've used both systems, I'd like you to give me some advice, especially for image quality. Thanks

    • @ToddDeWaldPhotography
      @ToddDeWaldPhotography  2 місяці тому +1

      Depending on what canon gear you are using, the image quality is fantastic for both systems. I came from the r5 which had great image quality and the ability to crop well and went to the z9 with very similar megapixels and fantastic image quality. As far as colors and sharpness, when exposure is done correctly I find I only need to adjust colors very slightly to what looks natural if I need to adjust at all. Of course that is subjective. For me I came down the ergonomics of the Nikon cameras and the lens lineup. I havnt done so yet but the pf lens in the z lineup are very compelling as a lightweight wildlife option that are not really available for other systems. I am very happy with the switch personally. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you and thank you for watching! It's not a weird question you're actually the second person to ask. I got it on amazon here is an affiliate link to it. amzn.to/46p9gmS. It says Womens but I didn't care just be sure to measure your head following the instructions on the companies website to make sure you get the right size. When I got mine I thought it was tight, but it loosed a little once I broke it in.

    How do you know when its a good time or spot to sit and wait for 30 or so mins?

    • @ToddDeWaldPhotography
      @ToddDeWaldPhotography  4 місяці тому +1

      It depends on the time of year and what you are looking to photograph. For birds for example, shrubby areas typically around edges of fields are a good spot because there is good cover and food for birds. Areas around water are also a good spot because there will be food, water, and cover typically. If you can find a food source, often times sitting there will result in something showing up eventually. Sometimes it takes longer than just 30 minutes though. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions let me know. Thanks for watching!

    Nice video David, how are you finding the EAF compared to the Canon. I understand it still has a ways to go, and can get caught on backgrounds a fair bit?

    • @ToddDeWaldPhotography
      @ToddDeWaldPhotography  10 місяців тому

      I will say that it is hard to compare the two systems. When using just the subject detect in the Nikon, I have found that the canon recognizes the subject a little better and quicker. With that being said though, I have had many many times when the canon eye detect did not work at all either especially when shooting birds in thick brush which is the subject that I am typically photographing. Neither systems are able to pick up on that and I had found that I was relying on the eye detect too much and that ended up resulting in many missed shots. One thing I really like about the Nikon is that you can have eye detect with different autofocus area modes and they are customizable. So I can use basically a single point mode with eye detect which has proven to be really useful with birds in brush. This essentially limits the area that camera is looking for the eye rather than searching the entire frame and locking on a leaf somewhere. Hope that answers it! Thanks for watching!

    you are making the same mistake as a lot of photographers make. Equipment is not going to make you a photographer.

      The brand of camera doesn't make any difference, but it does matter what is comfortable to use and for me that is Nikon which is why I switched. Thanks for watching
