Mike and I head out on a late July canoe trip to Algonquin park. Primary goal of this loop was to hit 3 creeks (Maple, Raven and Birchcliffe) in a loop with a stay at Birchcliffe cabin in the middle. In part one we start from Kiosk access, head up Maple creek to Maple lake before continuing to North Raven lake for day 2 where we must find a portage that eluded us years earlier.

Devil's Smoke Loop, Solo in Algonquin Park

End of September 2022, solo canoe trip in Algonquin Park. The plan for this trip was to see some lakes south of highway 60. I decided to make a loop starting at Smoke lake and to visit 3 spots named Devil (Devil's razor, Devil's staircase and the Devil's double staircase). So I named the loop the Devil's Smoke. Originally planned to be 4 days but it was rainy and cold so I decided to travel mor...

Bass have taken over all of those Lakes, unfortunatly
Ya I've only been going to 10 years or so but its already quite a noticeable difference.
I truly believe there are no fish in Grand lake lol, I have never caught a fish in that lake, and if anyone has, I believe its only been one and that was a fluke I'm sure. lol
I hear ya, I caught one small brook trout once... and that's it lol
Thank you for sharing the beautiful video, so I appreciate it and support you. Have a good day.
Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoyed!
@@jmullin Nice to meet you 👍
where did you get the kevin callan backpack?
It’s a Tripper model sold on Andy’s website recreational barrel works. This specific Color was a signed limited edition when they initially launched the model, money going to a canoe camp charity.
@jmullin wheres tht place from
what is that place at 25 seconds in?
That’s the eastern gate to the parc along highway 60.
@jmullin what you mean eastern gate
@ “The East Gate marks the eastern entrance to the Highway 60 corridor of Algonquin Park. Marked by a large arch over Highway 60, this Park office provides information and bathroom facilities and is the administrative headquarters for the Park. The western entrance of the Highway 60 corridor of the Park is marked by the West Gate.”
@jmullin oh so that's on hwy 60???
I’m looking at this route for ice out. Anything you’d do differently? Or anything to mention that wasn’t noted on the video? I always bring 2 rods just in case. Once, I took a cast, hooked on to the rod behind me and just sent it into the lake. Thanks for sharing your trip!
It’s a nice loop, probably even better at ice out since hopefully there will be plenty on water on the crow (sometimes you need to walk it almost as much as paddle) and lots of trout! Only thing to change is just to figure out how much you want to travel each day. You are a smarter man than me bringing 2 rods! Hope you have a great trip!
Hello Jonathan, great videos, thanks for sharing. I'm planning my fisrt solo trip to Algonquin 3 days-2 nights. Look to fish for Brook. Thinking of trying the Travers Lake access point or the Brent Lake access point. Any pointers for me? Option # 1 - Travers Access point then go up the river OR Option # 2 - Brent Access then head to / head up the Nipissing river...
Hi Andre, glad you enjoy the videos. Without knowing your experience level and how much you plan to travel each day, between the 2 options I would lean towards option #1. Since its a short trip (2 nights) the Travers option gives you beautiful sections the entire time, I don't know how good the trout fishing will be depending what month you'll be going. A LOT of bass in that section in the summer. As for the Cedar/Nipissing option be very careful crossing Cedar it can be smooth as glass or terrifying when the winds kick up. Also although the Nipissing is my favourite river in Algonquin, the end of it you'll see going in from Cedar is my least favourite part and also has much less trout in it compared to the other side (but that side requires a longer trip).
@@jmullin Hello, Thanks for the reply. I'm looking to go in the first week of May 2025. I don't think Bass is open at that time.... I will try my luck on Brook Truit. Quick question... i'm planning to go up river / stream from Lake Travers - Probably camp my first night near Devil's Cellar Raps or possible push to camp near Bypass falls. How's the fishing up and along that area of the river ? Again, seeing i'm going solo...I want to maximize on all the info I can get. thanks once again
@@andrepotvin8312 I'm pretty sure you'll love that section, its beautiful. Bass season isn't until near the end of June. Unfortunately I have no first hand knowledge on the early May trout for that section of the Petewawa, only time I have fished it is later in the season and all I was getting was bass, but that doesn't mean they're aren't any in early may. I little further up on the crow river I have caught trout in May.
Big crow portage is a tough one, I need a few years before I go back to it....Nice for you guy's to get your pack weight dialed in and no emergencies this time. 👍👍
@@jaysway2346 hey Jay! One of the main reasons for this loop was to revisit this portage hehe. Obviously at its length and elevation I can’t call it easy but it was surprising how much easier it was then what we remembered… it’s pretty amazing what a difference keeping your gear weight down and lower temperatures make! Have a good one!
hello new friend.stop by again watching your video very interesting.success👍👍💪🙏
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Keep em coming.... always up for some inspirational s^@t!
Hehe thanks Andrew!
great vid. well put together. And ty for your openness about fishing spots. I'm just getting into fishing so this is nice to see.
Glad you enjoyed, good luck on your fishing journeys!
Good morning freind❤❤❤ihave nice day❤❤
Nice summer laker, thought they would be much deeper.... Look at this, Mullin in a tent😲.....A moment of silence for the steak that got left behind.....I like that access but crowds can be an issue through the summer. Good trip guy's!
Thanks Jay! Agreed it’s a nice access, absolutely loved the actual Fassett loop lakes but Manitou and North Tea definitely had too much traffic for my taste. Don’t lose any sleep over the steaks, they met they’re fate on a trip Mike and I took a few weeks after this one!
WHATS YOUR INTRO ABOUT WTF KAWAWAYMOG WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT PISS
Buena pesca 👍
Gracias!
Really missing those trips. Looked like a great weekend.
Looks like a gorgeous lake with the cliffs and hills around it. Need to add it to my list of lakes to check out. I double carry so that portage though wouldn't be fun lol, I think I'd take the southern route up through Carcajou.
You should, Greenleaf is easily one of my favourites lakes, the way through Carcajou is nice, certainly brakes up the portaging better than the single giant portage.
what camera are you using?
I believe in this video it was a Hero 6 Black, currently use an 11.
Jelly blobs are colonies of freshwater bryozoan pectinattella magnifica.
Wow thanks for the comment, I would never have figured out what this was... just looked it up and that sure matches what we saw!
Nice part 2 of the trip 👍👍 How did you book red pine bay? I always have a problem making a reservation there because it doesnt let me book a campsite after that, everything shows as "too far"😅.. even when i just try to book bruntroot or longer which are right beside it, system is a bit buggy.
I hate that about the reservation system… when it happens (like it did on this trip) I book by phone. Look at the lake numbers online and reserve it example: access 27, day one site 520, day two site 519, day 3 lake 472 etc.
@@jmullin never tired by phone before, it sounds like back in the 1990's when my mom would call in the middle of the night to get through to book a car camp site for the summer 😂 When the system gives me issues like that, I just start up another trip on the system and continue booking my sites, I end up having to pay an extra $10 reservation fee though.. so that sucks.. maybe I will try phone next time around.
@@DerekSOutdoors Ya its a pretty smooth process, they can override any of the "trip too hard" warnings... I have to do it so often I just warn them before I start giving the trip details "you're going to get a bunch of warning messages, just accept them all". There is a extra fee for phone reservations, not sure if its more or less than your multiple reservation technique... that one never crossed my mind.
Ldone really absolutely very very lovely video amazing sharing full time watching like your videos thanks for sharing 🌟👌
Another nice Spring trip. Gotta love that portage into Luckless.
Definitely had a good time, cant wait for the next one!
Chia sẽ video thật tuyệt vời lắm bạn like dk kênh đồng hành ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Loosing track of the day's is part of the enjoyment of camping.....Day's 4-6 are some of my favourite area's of the park.... Nice route guy's!
It’s crazy how time works out there, sometimes at the end of a day what happened that morning feels like it was days ago hehe. I had seen to most of this route before but I really enjoyed the series of lakes between Robison and the Petawawa… will be going back some day for sure!
Good to see another inspirational spring trip... That jelly was weird....It took me a few tries to find my way through Sunfish, hard to navigate sometimes....I was thinking the same, that Calumet would be all yours.....
Hey Jay! Sunfish can be a nightmare to find the start of the channel when the water is low for sure. For Calumet it turns out we would have had the lake to ourselves, the guy that was there got super sick the day before and was unable to travel so he took a rest day. I was going to offer to help him portage out the next day but he was gone super early before we woke up.
How long did the 2k portage take yall?
Looking at the timestamps on the clips, the 2.8KM from Nipissing to Luckless lake took us 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Thanks so much for being so transparent with your route, it’s so nice to follow along on a map and be better prepared for planning my own trips. I always enjoy your watching your videos 😁
Thanks, glad you enjoyed, I do the same with other peoples videos, look at the map, get ideas for my own trips! Thanks for watching!
Looks like great weather so far. Hopefully, the rain stays away for you guys!
Hey man, we ended up having pretty good weather most of the trip, 1 really rainy day and the occasional small showers here and there but really can’t complain!
Wow those were some huge fallfish/chubbs and suckers 😅, and a shame you lost that big one at the boat!! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip 👍
Better than catching nothing but certainly not what i was targeting hehe, hopefully 1 week for rest of the trip, 2 if I'm lazy.
This is such a great shot: ua-cam.com/video/l4pmcvD-6UQ/v-deo.html I've been thinking about getting an Amok hammock. Is it the most comfortable hammock you've ever had?
The Amok is pretty great honestly, fantastic sleep back, side, stomach… all good. Best of all is the amount of open space inside… nothing squeezing in on you at all. Has a couple downsides, getting in and out isn’t as smooth and easy as gathered end hammocks (it’s not hard when your used to it but still not as smooth getting back into your shoes), sides are very cold if your arms go off pad ( I bring reflectix for this) and it’s bulkier/heavier than a gathered end. Very comfortable sleep for sure.
@@jmullinThanks! sounds pretty good. Guess I'll just have to decide to get the regular or splurge a bit more for the ultralight.
How are things?, Jonathan~ how well trip,see ya~ 👏
Nice Canadian Pack there Bud, well done !
Thanks 👍
Bass is delicious Johnatan, eat ‘‘em all up.
Hehe we had a bad experience the first time we ate fresh caught bass… didn’t try it again for years… the bass on this trip was indeed delicious!
Didn't try any fishing on the sittingman chain of lakes? Great trip!
Hey Mack, don’t think we tried much fishing at all on that day… mostly just traveled until sittingman itself. We did fish there and only caught and released tiny fish.

Thanks for sharing this trip! I'm planning to do that same loop just counter clockwise instead, over 6 nights. It's a short route for 6 nights but I'm planning on staying at a couple sites for multiple nights, or to have a buffer day for weather. I still might expand the route a bit, we'll see. I got a good chuckle when I saw your hat - I have the EXACT same hat and it goes with me on every canoe trip, faded and all.
Hi Brandon, i guess great minds are covered by the same hat LOL. Hope you have a great trip, I too am already looking forward to the next canoe season, going over the maps looking at routes!
