Thanks, this really was a pretty perfect trip weather, bugs and fishing wise... I don't mind portages actually, they brake up the day... but sometimes it does become a little much hehe. Have a great one!

Thanks for sharing - I did Tim to Rosebary and back in April first open weekend, such an amazing place to explore. Can’t wait to get back in the fall

Always fun to see JM back out for another trip! The KC pack looks nice and mentioning the wolf story made me laugh again as I recall your first thought was who's dog is that? Looking forward to part 2.

Hey Jay! Lol good memory, y’a I was sure for a second someone was on the portage trail with their dog hehe. Just watched your May trip earlier while cooking/eating… was a good video (and trip), flowed really well. Part 2 of mine drops tomorrow fyi.

Great first part of the trip, the fishing looks pretty good after the loontail creek junction, i think i need to go straight up there next time and skip past the tim and the headwaters of the nip😅
Luckily you didnt lose your sunglasses, would have made it tough for rest of the trip!
Curious what kind of raintarp did you guys use?

Hey Derek! Fishing was definitely better after loontail but to be fair we also started fishing a lot more. Both Mike and I were on the tail end of a cold for the first couple days of the trip and we’re pretty low energy! The rain tarp I brought is a DD superlight. It’s a 10x9.6 tarp with lots (19 I think) of tie out points and weighs around 1 pound.

I am impressed you can fit 8 days of gear + food in the green bag, especially if you are carrying camera gear around.
Looked up the tarp and it is definitely lighter than my aquaquest guide tarp. The DD might be good for when I want to go with a larger group.
For my solo trips I usually bring a small asymmetrical hammock tarp that you see in my videos, I think it was from a Hennessy asym or something (picked it up used from Kijiji for $15 a few years ago😅) does the job for now and I don't wish about breaking a $15 tarp 😂

Nothing better then a great deal on gear (I am jealous when I see people with tarps close to fires lol, can’t bring myself to risk mine). I was a little surprised how easily everything fit in the backpack this trip myself… I wasn’t even close to reaching its capacity, I was keeping the bag as short as I could since pack boats tend to not like tall backpacks (especially going up hill on portages). This was also the first time I used a compression bag inside the backpack for my clothing+sleep system, really freed up a lot more space compared to what I normally do with my Eureka packs (just stuff it all in a compactor bag at the bottom). For this trip I wouldn’t want too much more in the bag with a pack boat, for example in summer when I bring a NoBugZone on top of everything else I think the bag would end up being too tall and would frustrate me trying to hold the nose of the boat high going up hills… but in a canoe this bag would work great no matter how full it got.

@@jmullin hahaha I hear you, I would never take my dcf tarp or my Yama tarp/tent close to the fire 😅
And I know what you mean by the packboats don't carry well with tall packs, the seat keeps hitting the bag. And if I remember correctly at some point you said that you had a taller packboat seat installed in your boat as well right?
A compression bag definitely makes a huge difference, even a small dry bag makes the down items volume smaller. I stopped using compression bags for canoe tripping (they are reserved for winter now), I just use a rolltop dry bag and stuff my clothes and sleeping bag in there, pack size is not much bigger than using a compression bag, and because of the squarish shape, it is easier to pack than a bunch of round objects 😅.
Do you just bring a gopro for camera gear?

Y’a just a GoPro and a battery pack to recharge batteries. You mentioned you might look into DD superlite as a group tarp, Incase you didn’t notice they also make a XL superlite, it’s HUGE, same 19 tie outs but it’s 15x10, weighs half a pound more then normal superlite.
