- Mike and I head out on a late July canoe trip to Algonquin park. Primary goal of this loop was to hit 3 creeks (Maple, Raven and Birchcliffe) in a loop with a stay at Birchcliffe cabin in the middle.
In part one we start from Kiosk access, head up Maple creek to Maple lake before continuing to North Raven lake for day 2 where we must find a portage that eluded us years earlier.
Great to see you guys back out there. That cabin sure is worth the trip.
Hats off to you going that time of year. Tough stuff for sure. We went a few months earlier with way more water and way less alder.
Awesome video fellas!
Hey Steve! Been watching your trip vids as they come out. Travel actually wasn’t as bad as I expected, mostly because the last time we went to Birchcliffe we came in from the Biggar lake side up the creek against the current. That was a lot tougher, like 6 hours to go 4km in cold rain… in contrast going with the current in nice weather with negligible bugs was pretty sweet, and probably like yourselves I actually enjoy the creek travel!
Those alders are crazy, definitely some very useful info about that port if I go that way. Such a good feeling to get a summer laker for dinner.
hey Jay! Summer lake trout on the plate is great but how often do we lose one or catch them too early in the day and release expecting to keep another later... luckily Mike was determined on this night!
Fantastic stuff! The last canoe trip I took was around Keji here in NS. Such a great experience out in the back country. Looking forward to your adventure. Bruce and Otis
Hey Bruce! Glad you enjoyed it, hadn’t heard of Keji before (haven’t been to NS since I was very young) but I’ll note it incase of a road trip sometime!
omg.. how the hell did you not swear through those alders?? I don't know if I would have had the patience for them.
Congrats on finding that portage.
Never seen a gps combo with Jeff's map.. does that have anything to do with Avenza maps app?
Enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing.
Hi Pepe, the Alders can definitely test your patience, personally I enjoy the challenge… as long as I know I have time to get where I am going, if they are tougher then expected and your running out of daylight, then swear words are certainly in order hehe.
The GPS app is Avenza, I don’t think you can download it directly in the app, I downloaded the map from the internet and manually imported the file. Did this 7-8 years ago, not sure if it still works.
Great start for the trip.
How did you get a georeferenced version of Jeff's map on your phone? I lost my copy when I changed phones and it wasn't available anymore. Then I tried to georeference the jpeg version but my location is always off by a bit (maybe by 100 meters or so)
Hey Derek, just searched around, couldn't find a copy of the Avenza Jeffs maps, I got it 9 or 10 years ago probably and its always just followed from phone to phone. No clue if it works but if you google: avenza algonquin jeff map, the first result is a reddit thread that's 2 years old that says you could add it via + a special URL, worth a try.
