  • Have you recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Do you have diabetic nephropathy or other kidney disease? Has your doctor recommended taking Losartan or other ARB's as part of your treatment? Learn about the most common side effects as well as the more rare ones that you should watch out for. Starting a new medication can be scary so be informed.
Medication is not the only way that you should treat your high blood pressure. Many times through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise as well as managing your stress you can make a big impact on controlling it. For some simple steps you can start with in your diet watch my video on how to approach weight loss:

Monitoring your blood pressure at home is a critical element to keeping your blood pressure under control. When it's high you typically don't have symptoms and oftentimes when you come see me you get nervous and your blood pressure goes up. It's very helpful if you are taking it on a regular basis at home so we can tell if we need to make some adjustments. Here are a few options in blood pressure monitors that can help you with this:

I told my doctor the first time I met her that I’m not a good patient and don’t prescribed drugs for me unless there is an emergency. The only prescription I take is Losartan nothing else. I’m 79 and going strong and still employed.

I was diagnosed with HBP in 2003, only after I had a stroke. My BP was 210/198. I had a horrible headache for 8 days straight. I had to work to support my family. So when the pharmacist said I had to go to a doctor or the ER. I went to the doctor next door. He said I needed to take a pill + HCTZ daily for the rest of my life. I was put first on Losartan. After about 5 years I was switched to Lisinopril with HCTZ for about 5 years due to the issue this doctor mentioned. But, I've been back on Losartan with HCTZ for the last few years. I test my BP daily before taking my pills. Today my reading on my wrist cuff was 145/80. Yesterday it was 128/78.
Listen to your doctor. Take the medicine, it beats having a life threatening stroke. My stroke was bad in so many ways, yet in the long-run it saved my life. It will be 20 years in August. I have gotten to see all 3 children graduate high school. 2 college graduations. Now there are 7 grandchildren. All of which I would have missed if the pharmacist hadn't insisted I go immediately to the doctor.

My diet is excellent as well but i still had high bp consistently when i would goto my Doctor. Finally my Dr asked me did i want to start on low dosage Losartan 25mg to protect me from stroke and heart attack. So I started it and so far the last 5 months my bp has been excellent. I guess i inherited the blood pressure problem from my parents and just have to accept it. So far so good

after taking losarten for about three months I got a terrible stabbing earache and sore throat so I the doctor said I had a ear infection and put me on antibiotics and pain pills for seven days but that didn't work so I stopped taking losarten for one day now I feel fine so far . I'm being to lose my confidence in doctors it seems all they care about is money and making you come back and giving you more prescriptions .

I kept getting chest pain when I take this. I go to the ER after waiting there for 10 hours they found nothing wrong. Then I read Losartan can cause chest pain I quit taking it within a few days I felt better the chest pain was gone. I was obese I lost weight exercised and my BP went down without any drugs. It took lot of work wasn't easy. I changed doctors also the previous doctor wanted to keep me on BP meds didn't want to let me try and get it down with exercise. I never had any chest pains again after that.

Losarten k+ gave me profound fatigue, very rapid heart rate, sweating. And my BP was never consistently good or bad. Have switched to Monopril for Afib but the great thing that happened is the profound fatigue almost entirely has gone.....after 10 years of telling anyone who could hear me, doctors included, that I felt I was dying every day. So, if I hadn't developed Afib, I'd still be taking that crap probably and dragging myself every step I took. Fate.

Thank you for posting this. I've been on Losartan for 4-5 years now, and while the doctor who prescribed it first was very good about explaining things, she didn't have time to explain exactly how this medication works. While I'm not a medical professional my self, most of my family members are, so I grew up hearing medical terminology on a regular basis, and the mechanics of how medicines work is of interest to me. But the most valuable part of your presentation, for me at least, is the info about drug interactions.

I just started taking Losartan and it seems to not be working. My pressure has lowered to 167/140. My dose is 12.5MG, which was not one of the doses shown in this video. I don't know if I should I ask my doctor to double the dose or should I be taking a different medication.

I had been taking Lisinopril for three years. Then one day after taking my meds, I noticed my voice raising in pitch, like a cartoon character. I had the side effect of angeoedema. Went to my local hospital, who Life-Flighted me on a ventilator to a city hospital. Injected with steroids that brought the swelling down. Stayed overnight and was discharged the following day. No more ACE inhibitors for me.

I saw diarrhea is one of the side effects.
I’m thinking of decreasing my dosage to 50 from 100mg took it for 30 some years
I’ve IBS d as well. I’m now taking a very close look at all my prescriptions. Doctor lowered my Metformin from 1000 to 500, Synthroid .50 from .75, not sure I need to lower Losartan too.
    Thanks

I have anxiety driven BP. AT the dentist or doctor, it can reach as high as 240/140. Soon as I get home and relax, 145/90. Sometimes it's 120/80. If I've been keeping up with my cardio, my BP will run 112/65. It's been like this for decades. Decided to go on losartan to keep my BP from spiking that high. Been on 50mg for a month, went to dentist, 245/132. Got back in truck after appointment, 130/85. Now I'm at 100mg. We'll see how that works. And I'm keeping an eye on my BP to make sure it doesn't drop too much.

High blood pressure is the silent killer, because their are no symptoms, they say. However, concerning Losartan, there are quite possibly silent (no symptoms) unwanted side effects. I mean, come on! Who knows what kind of things are going on if you take this medication (or any medication). The human body is an extremely complicated machine. Just because there are no obvious side effects that you can see, doesn't mean that you aren't screwing up some aspect of the whole system that your body is composed of. For example, what if taking Losartan for years and years and years causes the mechanism that normally keeps you blood pressure from going too high to atrophy to such a point that it is no longer available?? Then you would have no bad side effects, but it would possibly prevent you from ever being able to stop taking this drug or some other high blood pressure medication without being in big trouble, even if later on you discovered some non-medical way of treating the condition. But of course, drug manufacturers WANT us to become dependent on their drugs don't they. So they are highly unlikely to check for something like this taking place.

I do not have high blood pressure. And yet I have been prescribed losartan. I in fact have low blood pressure but my heart muscle is not as strong as they would like or recovering as quickly as they would want after my latest procedure. It makes no sense to me that they would want to lower my blood pressure more when it already is low. Can you help me understand what the heck is going on?

I was taking 5 mg of Amlodipine and my cardiolgist changed me to Lisinopril 20 mg, after a few weeks it felt like my chest was caving in. I called him and went back to amlodipine. I decided to change my daily habits of eating less sugar and carbs & add walking. I lost 30 lbs and now take 1/2 of the 5mg. Avg. about 120/78 /65, resting BPM 54-58. Unfortunately I have had a couple of spikes to 160 /85 and then I take a Lisinopril and it gets me back down and the next day it is back to normal. I am 70 + years old.

I'm beginning to have doubts about my dr.
I've been on bp meds for 20 yrs ever since I had hyperthyroid. He has added a couple in recent yrs that I cant take along with a daily aspirin. He tried lisinopril (couldnt take) , lasortin (couldnt take) amlodipine no problem, still taking, along with atenolol chlor still taking. I think adding a third drug is just too much. Lasortin makes me dizzy no matter when I take it. He is going to be mad when I tell him I quit it but I feel much better without it. Im 70 and work on my feet 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week. Dont have time for dizzy.
