High blood pressure-medically known as hypertension-affects about 30 percent of adults. Left neglected, it can severely damage your quality of life and set the stage for heart disease, kidney complications, or a stroke. Conventional medicine typically treats hypertension with medications that are generally effective in reducing the risk of these complications. These medications frequently come with unintended side effects, however. The good news is the right foods and nutrients can dramatically lower blood pressure without the high costs and side effects of medications.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss the driving forces of hypertension and the Functional Medicine approach to treating it.
This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens.

Low potassium is a major cause of high blood pressure. Since the vast majority of people (perhaps all of us) are deficient in this mineral, supplementing is the cheap and easy way to lower your blood pressure. I recently lowered my BP from 166/95 to 131/76 by taking 1000mg of potassium chloride twice a day, and continuing to eat a healthy diet. Yes, I am healthy otherwise, so this one change had a drastic effect of my own blood pressure.

    • @vek0vek0
      @vek0vek0 Місяць тому

Be careful with potassium chloride, it is proven to cause small intestine and stomach ulcers. There is a reason it is mandatory for supplements to have no more than 99mg P. Chloride per tablet. Do your research, especially if you notice any stomach /gut ache after you start taking it. Best way is to increaseyour potassium thru foods. Potatoes, bananas, tomatoes etc.

Stress is definitely a contributory factor. One way to overcome stress is to play a game in your mind of finding a positive in every situation and finding the positive things in your life. Each time your are worried, fretting, angry or depressed, play this game. Yes there is a positive in each and every situation and all negative things out there in the world that are NOT in your life are also thankfully your positives. So next time you feel low play this game.😃 Another surprising way to lessen stress is to help someone, yet another is to have a hobby

I have high blood pressure and the irritating thing is that I have NONE of the other markers - bloods are fine, not overweight, etc etc. So it has to be genetic, and.... age (am in my sixties). I try to keep it down by eating things high in potassium and other vitamins supposed to help so that I do not have to increase the medication. I know when things are bad though - I feel heady and then very tired. You need to get it lower as you age - things catch up with you!

Around 20% of people with Hypertension have a condition called primary Aldosteronism where the adrenals are inflamed and or have a aldosterone emitting tumour. Excess aldosterone means that the body holds onto salt and dumps potassium. If you are diagnosed then you need to restrict salt intake to 1500mg a day. It is a curable form of high blood pressure with medication and or removal of the affected adrenal. Many people are walking around with this condition - it is diagnosed using a blood test and more precise testing is used to figure out if it is one or both adrenals affected. It would be a good idea to look into this Mark - there needs to be more information on UA-cam and other platforms around this condition which used to be once thought of as rare. When this is diagnosed it can add 20 years to someones life. Millions are currently undiagnosed. Thanks

"Lifestyle" - 100% agreed. However, it isn't as easy as one might think. The suggestions made here about better foods to eat might be possible for someone who has the income to support better quality meals, but a person on a limited income is forced to buy what he can afford - which is usually the "bad" foods.
Based on the laws of physics, if you eliminate the cause of high blood pressure, there is no reason for it to exist. This is why the salt claims are wrong. If a doctor advises the patient to cut back on salt and then prescribes medication, then salt can't be the cause because by cutting back on the salt (the "cause"), medications shouldn't be needed.
The answer to properly treating high blood pressure is to find the cause and fix it. It shouldn't be too hard to do. If the medical profession understands the mechanics of how medications act on the body to get the desired effects, they should know what nutrients do the same thing. This would indicate a nutrient deficiency that is treatable by the patient.

I know that I have the alcohol to blame. Will totally cut it out now, my diet was always pretty good, but it can be improved, and I will do that, too. Thanks for confirming what my intuition told me straight away. I can't stand how some people tell me straight away, oh, just take the medication. And then they admit that they still eat crap. I totally agree with and appreciate this video so much. And I love the many excellent points you made, Doc. Most doctors don't know even half of what you said here. I always have an issue with the "Americans eat X number of pounds of sugar a year" statistics that are always part of articles everywhere wherever American diets are discussed. And if "nutrition" is discussed in the doctor's office at all, that's pretty much all you get: the sugar lecture and these "average American" numbers. Over the years I've done a bit of research into this and have found that the number wildly fluctuates depending on the source. You can basically find almost every outrageous number given. You can find sources that swear each American eats 57 lbs of sugar a year, no it's 87, no, it's 147, another says it's 150 - 170 lbs of sugar a year! Why don't we all just agree that each and every American eats an average of 500 pounds of sugar a year so that we cover all bases. Or, we can realize that these numbers are based on sales of sugar in the food industry and not accurate at all. It would be more accurate to say X amount of lbs of sugar are used in the food industry each year. But then the amount of food waste would have to be admitted and factored in. Because all we really know is how much sugar is sold, not really how much is consumed. Nor do we know what that "average American" is out there doing. Because I think we all know that there are people who eat terribly on a regular basis and drink soda all day long, but many eat quite good as a rule, as well as many who eat with intelligence daily. But the food industry, which is really where the blame lies here, cranks out the sugar, puts it everywhere, and then we're accused of eating it all. In truth, it's not all consumed. To be more correct "sugar" needs to be defined as everything that raises blood sugar, as well, which includes grains, a huge staple of the American diet.
I love that you included heavy metals in this discussion; most don't ever mention them. Mercury fillings needs to be looked into much more as a cause for hypertension, imo. I also love that you talked about magnesium deficiency, which is absolutely rampant and when was the last time anyone had their conventional doctor advise they focus on getting their daily magnesium and potassium? I would also like to add that food allergies or sensitivities are also a more common cause of hypertension than most realize. That ended up being my main cause and it took a functional/holistic doctor to help me figure that out. I was pretty fascinated by that.
There are so many causes that I feel it's victim blaming to say "the average American eats" whatever number of pounds of sugar or other garbage someone wants to blame on them (not you--this is a common stat thrown around by everyone). It's true that more education on the many underlying causes of hypertension needs to be given---to the doctors out there, primarily, and then to their patients who deserve answers.

At the 6-year mark, the investigators performed a statistical analysis to find out how blood pressure could affect a person’s mortality risk. They also adjusted for potential confounding factors, such as sex, lifestyle choices, body mass index (BMI), and how many drugs for high blood pressure each person took.
They saw that people aged 80 and over who had a lower blood pressure - of 140/90 mm Hg or under - actually had a 40 percent higher mortality risk than peers with blood pressure exceeding those thresholds.

Great question. I looked at my research on this subject and found this. The paper has links to articles specifically on cardiovascular effects:
Toxic Metals Cause Membrane and DNA Damage, and Disrupt Physiology (Protein and Enzyme Activity)
Heavy metals enter the human body through the gastrointestinal tract, skin, or via inhalation. Toxic metals have proven to be a major threat to human health, mostly because of their ability to cause membrane and DNA damage, and to perturb protein function and enzyme activity. These metals disturb native proteins’ functions by binding to free thiols or other functional groups, catalyzing the oxidation of amino acid side chains, perturbing protein folding, and/or displacing essential metal ions in enzymes… It is well known that exposure to xenobiotic [toxic] metals can cause gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, renal, hemopoietic, and neurological disorders [6,7]. Some heavy metals stimulate through different pathogenetic links the progression of cancers and reduce their sensitivity to treatment [8,9]. Oxidative stress (rising level of oxidative damage in a cell) caused by these metals destroys lipids, proteins and DNA molecules, and supports carcinogenesis. A wider discussion on this topic can be found in recent reviews [10,11,12]. - Danuta Witkowska et al, Molecules

Stopped starchie food like pasta rice and all but my body couldn't handle it so had to substitue protein in it's place which works but I still like the sweet treats. Maybe I can cut them completely but cutting down right now only eating some treats once or twice per week. Salt I cut a long time ago but difficult to cut it completely. Just to say it made a big difference right away. Walking up this steep hill I do it a few day sometime every day to go to the local supermarket to get sundries. My blood presure was very high even though I am taking meds for it. Taking this new diet does not make a big difference to belly fat but seems to be going down. I am 65 this month and have been experiencing high BP for 3 years and started experiencing some limited arthritis in my hands. My systolic ranges from 160 - 120 but my diastolic is only 80 - 65. I have had a balanced diet for many years and recently did a 30 day AIP detox diet and lost 9 lbs and am down to 172 lbs and am 5'9. I also increased my supplements to include magnesium, Vit K, D, C, Co Q10, multi and fish oil. I retired 2 years ago, I have little stress and have been exercising typically 2x per day including a 1 hour walk and strength exercises. I am now seeing a cardiologist and did an EndoPat test which had no alarms on it. I am frustrated because it seems like I am doing all the right things but my BP still fluctuates and seems too high. I wanted to avoid medication but seems like I may need to start.

Is it possible that your higher reasons are from anxiety? If you are worried about your blood pressure, and concerned that this time it will be higher, then they can raise it.
I'm not a doctor, this is just from personal experience, and what a doctor suggested to me in the E.R last summer.

A keto diet is the way to go in terms of a life long lifestyle to cut out the bad carbs and keep the good fats and proteins. Intermittent fasting daily is huge when implemented. B complex vitamins, magnesium, zinc, iodine, vitamin D3 (with K2), a teaspoon and a half of sea salt daily, 4700 mg of potassium daily. Daily electrolytes in water which contain magnesium, sodium, chloride, calcium and potassium and trace minerals is great hydration. I recommend Dr. Berg's electrolyte powder (grape flavor is tasty). Get your thyroid checked. Also, if you truly want to know what vitamins and minerals you're deficient in instead of taking supplements blindly, then get a HTMA test (hair, tissue, mineral analysis). It's the best test for accurate levels. A blood test is just a moment in time and doesn't reflect the last three months in the body. Sleep at least 7 hours if not 8 without interruption. HIIT exercises no more than 3 days a week recovering in between.

Thank you Dr. Hayman, I really appreciate what you had to say, and I implementing those now. I have increased those measures increasingly after they proved extremely efficacious. It is wonderful to be 69 years of age, and have a body that looks the way it did when I was 31-33 years of age. I just started exercising again after working long hours on a project, and I did 32 push ups easily. But being a health nut I will be getting back to doing 100 push ups a day very shortly. What is truly wonderful is that today the information on genetics, science, and medicine is so much more accurate, and efficacious than just 20 year ago, that there is literally no reason to allow ones self to turn into a dead skin, wrinkled, sun damaged blob wasting away on a couch eating ding dongs.

Thank you for this incredibly helpful video. Could you please do a video on fish and how we can take in fish without the industrial pollutants/metals that seem to have impacted fish products? I'd love to take in more fish in my diet but I'm afraid of the mercury and what kinds of farm-raised fish are unsafe. Can farm-raised fish ever be safe? I'm on a student budget and that is another factor with fish products. Thank you again.

    • @ebutuoyebutouy
      @ebutuoyebutouy Рік тому

Bad news. Farm raised fish only have a fraction of the nutrition that wild caught fish have. Avoid large fish because they are older and have accumulated more mercury. Mackerel is confusing because there are both large and small. Herring is difficult to find in the US because they grind it up for cattle feed. Sad. Only "fresh" wild caught salmon is usually spoiled. That leaves you w frozen wild caught salmon and an occasional tuna. Then canned anchovies, sardines, and herring in olive oil.
      Sad but true.

Hi... I've had high BP for at least forty years. 25 years ago my doctor sent me to a hypertension clinic (in Australia where I live) and they tested everything. Echo cardiogram, renal artery scan, etc etc. My cholesterol was the lowest the doctor had ever seen, and at 50 I was fit enough to ride my bicycle there over the biggest hills in town. They said that I had the heart of an ox...!
So I've been on tablets ever since.
Then seven months ago I went keto largely due to chronic urinary infections and even passing clots. Freaked me out!
To my astonishment within two days all my symptoms disappeared. No more night urination (I was getting up three or more times a night) and I felt great. Until I discovered that I must be fructose intolerant because fruit turns my urine to tea.
I've lost ten kilos. I've not eaten ANY wheat, sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes (night shades give me arthritis) in seven months. NONE.
I now mix Himalayan salt 50/50 with K Chloride and make my own electrolyte with potassium and Mg citrate and lemon juice with tiny amounts of Himalayan salt thrown in. The only veggies I eat are broccoli, cauliflower some cabbage and Brussels sprouts.
My BP refuses to go down. I've reluctantly gone back on my BP tablets. Bitterly disappointed....
    Mike

I have been a welder for about 6 years now and I started eating healthy and exercising at the start of this year and my blood pressure has gone through the roof. I was recently put on Lisinopril but there are so many dietary restrictions and supplements I can’t take. I felt all of my efforts to get healthy were counter productive. I’m definitely thinking the heavy metals are a factor for me.

Dr. Hyman, I hear you and maybe it is my sleep pattern that is causing my high blood pressure. I have been a vegetarian since birth and I have high bp. It's crazy because the doctors will always tell me to cut out fat, oils, salt, etc. Then when I tell them I am a vegetarian they look at me like I am lying. Whats crazy is that I don't like salt. So maybe my high bp comes from something else. I understand that I am the minority but I just can't understand why someone healthy like me have High BP.
