And some of them were already there when the game was still in the prototype phase. I wouldnt be surprised if they outright replace some of them entirely. But you feel the wip in a lot of areas, this would propably be their last concern.
I honestly love Dynamos' design because of how nerdy he looks. I mean, he's a science professor, and his voice lines fit that goofy teacher outfit to me
Thanks for this wonderful review! FYI tho, Valve stated that ALL of the hero models and designs in this pre-alpha build are NOT FINAL. They are just placeholders for now. Valve is currently prioritizing on the gameplay, movement, and mechanics of the game (that's why players are liking this game because it FEELS great to play) and then once they perfected those things they can finally focus on fixing the designs, models, and textures. Valve is actually sharing concept arts in the official Discord of multiple potential redesigns of the heroes and asking the community which ones they think are the best.
Yeah you can see that they already have VERY different designs for characters in the works, even the ones that seem finished. If you look at the leaked Lady Geist visual novel, you can see that Dynamo has a similar but much more detailed design than what he currently has in game.
The biggest thing I dislike about the characters right now is how non-distinct characters are when they come around a corner and bullets start flying. Everyone is just too grey compared to the already very grey cityscape, and this even applies to minions. There needs to be some more colors and contract to make things better on the eyes or at least better outlining on enemies.
On the whole microtransaction thing, I'm pretty faithful that this won't be predatory, at least not as much as riot's or blizzard's systems. Even though valve's games have a lot of really exorbitantly priced items, those prices are placed by the community, not the company. and for every 1000$+ item, there's a dozen 50cent or cheaper items. In dota2, tf2 and cs, someone with a budget of 5$ can easily get a skin for every character/weapon, some really cool ones too (very cheap immortals in dota for example, some of the best looking skins and also some of the cheapest). Plus, in dota tf2 and cs you can freely trade with friends and other players, allowing you to give old skins you don't use to friends who are new to the game and allows for a more free market. I'd much rather a system like that than what riot and blizzard does, with their virtual currency that always gives you just slightly under what you need to buy what you want so that you go for the bigger package, leaving you with a small amount of currency left over that you can't do anything with. It's extremely predatory. I just hope Valve tones down on the gambling with this game, but even if they don't I don't think it'd be that big of an issue.
Yeah the fact that Valve just cuts the bullshit and lets you pay directly with money makes the whole thing a lot more honest and transparent. I'm not scared about the monetization, Valve has so far proven to focus on cosmetics only, so all heroes should be free for everyone. What I am scared of are crazy skins that will change the silhouette or the ability fx of heroes. Dota used to be kinda good about that sort of thing, but since at least 5 years, they have gone way overboard with that shit. In a game as quick as Deadlock, it's sooo important to understand which hero you're looking at and whether the effect on the ground is friendly or not

Yamato looks like that because it's a holdover character from when this was a sci-fi game. Whoever made the call to redesign the game entirely to be early 1900s style instead of sci-fi made the right call honestly.
Hard agree, not just sci-fi but particularly "cyberpunk" is way ridiculously overused rn. There's a lot more that can be done with science fiction than most companies seem to think right now. The use of color in the map and character design is crazy good. All the map elements are a muted grey/beige so the abilities, lane colors, and characters can pop
I fucking love the theme of deadlock, it looks like an industrial era thingy, the whole concept of patron is very interesting and each character is so unique to the point where I feel like there is no limit to what they could come up with
Something I kinda wish there was more mention of the movement mechanics. Though pretty basic, those three stamina pips can be crucial for engaging a fight, chasing down enemies to ensure their deaths, and helping your chances of survival while retreating. Doing something like the roll + jump, landing on a big staircase, and sliding down, all while being chased at 80 hp mid to late game, that can matter. Even early it feels great being able to dodge a bit of gun poke, or especially those stupidly high damaging abilities like Lady's grenade or Pocket's barrage. The movement mechanics are great because they are not character based, they don't have a 20 million year cooldown, and everyone has access to them.
Yeah having a dash is such a massive change from the classic MOBA mentality because in stuff like League, poking too far into enemy territory can just kill you if the enemy catches you, with basically nothing you can do about it. Being able to dash around in a firefight and avoid enemy abilities is a massive change and one I definitely enjoy (especially since I love watching Seven do full goddamn cartwheels when he dodges to the side).

"lose 1 or 2 games to learn the game" oh boy, that's a feverdream learning curve! I'm gonna be learning 10 to 20 per character before I'm familiar with how to build them per match, I feel like 8))))
If you don't look up a quick guide or build video for a new character, you're gonna need like 100 matches to learn how to build them well. 0 point not using other people for that, the real challenge SHOULD be in the gameplay, not the planning.
for sure they are gonna keep the characters free, as someone who has been unfortunate enough to play dota all the characters there have always been free and unlocked. My main gripe with league was that there over a 100 characters and they are locked arbitrarily. Overwatch 2 had locked characters on launch, but in a recent update they made all current and future characters free and unlocked.
I've never played MOBAs before. The gameplay didn't click for me. But I've played shooters for years and this just sunk its teeth in. I put like 24 hours in over a weekend and I really feel that this is going to be a game I can play for a LONG time (as long as they don't kill it with balancing issues)
fwiw, the game is being headed by IceFrog, the guy who was in charge of balancing Dota since 2005. In turn, Dota has consistently been one of the most balanced hero based pvp games over the past 10 or so years. Doesn't necessarily mean it will carry over to Deadlock, but a level of confidence is deserved.
I think that the designs need more polish and the issues with them are likely because it was originally going to be scifi themed but they changed it to supernatural 1930s fantasy and it's still in early development. They've confirmed that they're going to be redesigning Yamato and shown concept art, so they'll definitely be redesigning some of the other characters like Bebop, Dynamo, and Grey Talon to better fit the new aesthetic. There's also concept art of what they want the finished environments to look like and it looks really cool.
The game is more alike to dota 2 with its deny mechanics, items, build guides and also towers. Also im pretty sure they wont add a surrender function as comeback would make the game more entertaining to players and viewers. I hope the game is F2P but i would still buy to play it regardless and valve games microtransaction are pretty decent and could buy them cheaper in the steam market
it definitely wouldn't have surrender options, maybe except for public lobbies. Valve encourages players to not give up, especially since they already give players a lot of opportunities to make a comeback, like a lot of items that can counter enemies' abilities and items or support your allies' abilities and items, or items that could support your backdoor engagement (Though I don't know if there will be an anti-backdoor protection item), where even in late game, changing your items is recommendable if needed. So I don't think surrender is an option. So it will definitely happen where a Dota player in Deadlock will have to explain why the game has "it's still not safe to leave" condition in matches and why the game will never have surrender option. It'd be funny though because most MOBA have that option and will experience some kind of culture shock.
Shiv is my favorite design in the game. It's a very simple, understandable color palette with a distinct silhouette and the jaded greaser theme just works for me. He's also headbobbing in his idle stance.
Hey sport, great video. 3k TF2 hours, 4k Dota 2 hours, and Deadlock has captivated me. I got a MOBA-Hater to play Deadlock and they love it too.Third Person Shooter mechanics make it extra accessable to more people because Fortnite's popularity demands it... food for thought? Wraith needs more Made Men Mobster flair, purple rose accents maybe? Bebop silhouette needs to be more emphasized, bigger shoulders and legs, bigger hyper beam with awesome Eastern videogame GFX Excited for Yamato rework... going to miss the conehead... Warden needs more flair during his 2nd and 4th abilities, then he is S tier. For Gray Talon its Nerf or Nothing right now but he needs to GROW UP and get new colours and more bird motif. Thanks
Really entertaining video! I know it’s a month old so you probably won’t see this comment, but I wanted you to know that it gave me a good laugh during a stressful day at work. You and your friend play off of each other really well with humor. Nice job man!! I’m definitely gonna check out your other vids now A couple things: 1) Dynamo is S tier and the fact that you guys put him in D tier is a war crime 2) A lot of the characters’s designs make more sense when you read the little backstory blurb. Pocket is the best example of this I think. They’re a rich kid who survived an assassination attempt, and has gone into hiding. They stole the rare artifacts that their father owned to keep them out of his hands. Looking at Pocket, “rich kid who has a bunch of magical artifacts and doesn’t know how to use them” comes across pretty well imo. And the suitcase is actually corrupting Pocket, you can see the green stuff on their hand and the glyph on the back of their palm 3) Pocket is nonbinary, all in-game materials refer to them with they/them pronouns. It’s not super obvious, but I felt like you should know if you make more Deadlock stuff
I love the occult theme this game has going for it, I'm sure the lore will be fun. I just hope they improve the readability, fights are really chaotic.
deadlock character designs are highly stylized, clean, clearly readable and made with a consideration for the game to be able to run on a calculator, that being said one can only imagine how would it be with a cosmetics
"I wanna see his blindingly white teeth as he kills me" I sure hope they add the facial animation framework they had in tf2 to this one. I just love how the expressions of the mercs change on the situation. So good.
6:38 Concord ain't eating sand. Its eating grey slop that forgot what sauce or taste even is. At least sand DOES have a taste. I really like Deadlocks occult Prohibition Era aesthetic, we don't get enough urban fantasy like this
some changes i would like to see in the near future is quick cast, character specific binds, and a more detailed resources tab in the main menu. so basically more dota stuff
My barrier of entry has always been the perspective; I don‘t like playing Top Down when there‘s action going on. Seven makes me feel things. The fact that it also takes heavily from shooters when its Valve in Charge is just the cherry on top, they know their stuff
8:06 the robot stuff is cause the game used to be cyberpunk style, so some characters still have that style as they havent been redesigned as a character. (Yamato and grey talon for example)
they should make the characters free, even if it's the class of game or not, paying for characters is just a thing they put in to make your experience more frustrating and grindy
I wish I could play it. It looks so cool and pretty good gameplay wise. I’ve been playing League since I got into it last year. I have had a lot of fun with it even it can be infuriating. Deadlock could be right up my alley and hopefully convince my friends to play it too whenever it comes out
Dota 2 has all heroes unlocked from the start, CS has all weapons unlocked to select and put into your loadout, and TF2s weapons are easy to earn over a few hours of gameplay, I highly doubt Valve would lock characters in play to earn schemes unlike other developers.
I didn't even realize that Wraith had robot arms and she just has her hands in her pockets.... why are there so many things in this game that I can't say anything to other than "fuck that's cool"

Bro im going insane VINDICTA HAS OPEN HAIR IN HER PORTRAIT! i cant unsee it now. Why her hair different
Most character models will be getting redesigns.
League player discovers DotA game design, immediately sings praise
bro please don't forget that it doesn't say "he" anywhere on Pocket's bio cmon man
bro is mental it hasnt been announced yet
Imma be in there when it is
Yo put some respect on my man dynamo, I love his goofy ass spectral professor look
I will not take Dynamo slander lightly
I think that the designs need more polish and the issues with them are likely because it was originally going to be scifi themed but they changed it to supernatural 1930s fantasy and it's still in early development. They've confirmed that they're going to be redesigning Yamato and shown concept art, so they'll definitely be redesigning some of the other characters like Bebop, Dynamo, and Grey Talon to better fit the new aesthetic. There's also concept art of what they want the finished environments to look like and it looks really cool.
All models are placeholders and will be changed in time
Reminder, this is not even a beta. These designs were not meant to be seen by public even, this is literally just a gameplay test
Dynamo on D is criminal
I played league for 8 years with some friends that still keep playing, they don't want to play anything else, but they loved deadlock
9:20 Looking at all the Ivy fan art. Yeah your not far off.
"I'll stand against many-" My ass, you fly bro
I think my favorite part of Shiv's design is his shotgun flipping open to be a switchblade during his ult.
Shiv is my favorite design in the game. It's a very simple, understandable color palette with a distinct silhouette and the jaded greaser theme just works for me. He's also headbobbing in his idle stance.
I honestly couldnt care less about cometic microtransactions, because like, you can just not pay and its whatever
Bebop silhouette needs to be more emphasized, bigger shoulders and legs, bigger hyper beam with awesome Eastern videogame GFX
Excited for Yamato rework... going to miss the conehead...
Warden needs more flair during his 2nd and 4th abilities, then he is S tier.
For Gray Talon its Nerf or Nothing right now but he needs to GROW UP and get new colours and more bird motif.
Thanks
Just hearing about this game but Shiv looks so cool
I did not think I would like this game as much as I ended up doing
Really entertaining video! I know it’s a month old so you probably won’t see this comment, but I wanted you to know that it gave me a good laugh during a stressful day at work. You and your friend play off of each other really well with humor. Nice job man!! I’m definitely gonna check out your other vids now
A couple things:
1) Dynamo is S tier and the fact that you guys put him in D tier is a war crime
2) A lot of the characters’s designs make more sense when you read the little backstory blurb. And the suitcase is actually corrupting Pocket, you can see the green stuff on their hand and the glyph on the back of their palm
3) Pocket is nonbinary, all in-game materials refer to them with they/them pronouns. It’s not super obvious, but I felt like you should know if you make more Deadlock stuff
I love the occult theme this game has going for it, I'm sure the lore will be fun. I just hope they improve the readability, fights are really chaotic.
This was pretty funny 6/10 swag
When I first played the game it became immediately clear to me this one is going to become huge upon release, like next to Dota, LoL and CS.
deadlock character designs are highly stylized, clean, clearly readable and made with a consideration for the game to be able to run on a calculator, that being said one can only imagine how would it be with a cosmetics
"I wanna see his blindingly white teeth as he kills me"
I sure hope they add the facial animation framework they had in tf2 to this one. I just love how the expressions of the mercs change on the situation. So good.
6:38 Concord ain't eating sand. Its eating grey slop that forgot what sauce or taste even is. At least sand DOES have a taste.
I really like Deadlocks occult Prohibition Era aesthetic, we don't get enough urban fantasy like this
Kelvin not a freak he looks like a cop, c tier
some changes i would like to see in the near future is quick cast, character specific binds, and a more detailed resources tab in the main menu. so basically more dota stuff
After 6 long years, I have a game to call home. oh so relaxing.
My barrier of entry has always been the perspective; I don‘t like playing Top Down when there‘s action going on. Seven makes me feel things. The fact that it also takes heavily from shooters when its Valve in Charge is just the cherry on top, they know their stuff
damn... this does look kind of sick
UR MINO, I LOVE UR VIDS
@@bigfreakinfrog Always nice to meet a fan
It really does. Without any characters in the game the map somehow looks like a TF2 map
8:06 the robot stuff is cause the game used to be cyberpunk style, so some characters still have that style as they havent been redesigned as a character. (Yamato and grey talon for example)
Mcginnis as well, her character portrait has a different welding mask and shirt than the current design
I am disappointed, I expected at least 10 comments about Vindicta's feet
Favourite character is fuck it we ball. The changes to scaling on ball damage be very funny lol.
Ivy has become my new favorite skrunkly. She's such a skrungo. A skringus. A skronkle. A genuine goobergunkle.
Damn what you got against dynamo, i love him
This guy literally sound like a yes man to his friend
2:30 IS THAT GOING UNDER SOUNDTRACK???
Bro is playing at 35fps mad respect.
they should make the characters free, even if it's the class of game or not, paying for characters is just a thing they put in to make your experience more frustrating and grindy
prolly will tho cuz dota 2 is like that
I wish I could play it. It looks so cool and pretty good gameplay wise. I’ve been playing League since I got into it last year. I have had a lot of fun with it even it can be infuriating. Deadlock could be right up my alley and hopefully convince my friends to play it too whenever it comes out
Getting an invite aint that hard. Just ask around
@@addmen96 who do I ask? Steam themselves or someone else
@@Blu_Moon_Owl if anyone on your friends list has the game (including new friends that you add), they can invite you to the game
@@Genoh_ ok 👍
Hey been a few days but if you ain't got it yet I can hook you up lol
I'm down for getting more people playin
Dota 2 has all heroes unlocked from the start, CS has all weapons unlocked to select and put into your loadout, and TF2s weapons are easy to earn over a few hours of gameplay, I highly doubt Valve would lock characters in play to earn schemes unlike other developers.
Vindicta doesn’t have enough indication she’s like undead, she just looks like a blue lady
Abrams does say something like "Sorry I killed you...again"
i like valves aproach to live services, no battle pass, all characters unlocked and usually get crates and keys with trading i am in
Shiv looks like wukong if he was a greaser
I didn't even realize that Wraith had robot arms and she just has her hands in her pockets.... why are there so many things in this game that I can't say anything to other than "fuck that's cool"
Your Honor, Defense of the ancients 3
8:35 he draws faster than normal human? Eh?
Going Under OST? On a Deadlock video? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one :D
1:03 that still happens in deadlock which is hella pathetic
Dynamo in D tier is a crime. So is is the Elvis monkey at S tier
MY BOY DYNAMO DID NOT DESERVE THAT BRO
I liked the character tier list except for the part where you were objectively wrong about my GOAT Dynamo.
Also Viscous is a placeholder design from what I heard. His real design is going to be about 100% more goo focused.
banger vid bro
Ty 🙏
Good review broseph
going under ost is peak
First chesh appearance where he doesnt do a hispanic joke. Ask him. Its true.
Can't break those cuffs! 🤣
