Dear Ms Sirin, my 9 year old son has been crocheting for about 8 months now. He has done 4 of your patterns for himself. He has decided to spend the rest of the time we are in quarantine knitting some of your simpler patterns for premie babies in the local hospitals. We managed to buy yarn before the lock down in California. He takes 2-3 days to do one hat so has set a target of three hats a fortnight.

He will be designing rocket projects before you know it. I too am crocheting and knitting and enjoy the excuse that Covid19 has allowed me to use. At close to 69 yo I have been crocheting and knitting for 65 years. If you don’t do anything in those two methods you end up sewing, quilting, macrame etc so he will be making so many useful garments for himself as well as beanies for new borns who arrive with very little and those precious babies deserve so much more. God bless you both and get those needles out soon.

@@SirinsCrochet Thanks, He has now donated 36 hats. School is restarting so I expect the rate to drop off drastically. But he has produced a lot of other things, a couple of scarves and a tea cosy, Hoping this becomes a life time hobby. I am sure your daughter will enjoy learning, you explain so well!

@@gratnam9455 Thank you ♥ You are so kind. My daughter loves to make embroidery and she likes knitting. Crocheting is still a little hard for her :) I'm so happy to be a little part of your son's beautiful donation project. I hope he could always make a handwork like crocheting which can take all of his stress. And he can also keep helping people with this way ♥♥

Your pattern is amazing and I learned how to do the front post double crochet and back post double crochet and how to start a magic circle. Thank you so much!! I have just made this hat using stylecraft aran and a 5mm hook, it worked out great. After the increase rounds I was sure that I had done something wrong as my hat looked like a flat circle! However I kept on going with the repeat round and slowly but surely the hat took shape and I obtained a hat shape. This I my new favourite beanie pattern. Thank you Sirin 😊

I love this hat! It was very easy, once I got past the increase rounds. I had to frog those FIVE times before I finally got it right. Sirin, you are one of my favorites for crochet videos. I have to agree with Nadine below on this one, though. Not quite as clear as others of yours, and I would also have found it helpful to have the stitch counts for each row. Now that I've figured it out, though, I'll be making more of these!

TRUST THE PROCESS TRUST THE PROCESS TRUST THE PROCESS!! Like some other comments I was also concerned about the outcome especially cause of the strange folding, but decided to keep going since I already started. It ends up good! I did use a thicker yarn so it is smaller, meant to be a men's hat but it fit me instead, so be warned if you are using a thicker yarn! Good tutorial!

***Tip: Add stitch marker to the third chain of your beginning Ch3 stitch in each row to clearly mark the beginning stitch of the row.
    Row 1: 12 stitches (Ch 3 + 11 DC)
Row 2: 24 stitches (Ch 3 and DCs)
Row 3: 36 stitches (Ch 3 and DCs)
    Row 4: 72 stitches (Ch3 and DCs)
72 stitches for remainder of rows
Pattern suggests to make enough rows until you reach 22 cm/8.5 inches. Or as many rows as you like depending on the length that you want.

I am just putting a few final rows on the beanie and once again must compliment you on your design. I love this fpdc / bpdc stitch because it does two things...it is dense, thereby ensuring warmth for the wearer and it does have plenty of stretch to it so that one size truly should fit all. I have thumbed through a lot of men's stocking cap patterns trying to find something that looked manly and this surely did, although i could see myself wearing one as well with a pom pom. I will be making several of this for Christmas presents this year. I think they will be well received. Thanks again Sirin for your wonderful patterns and video tutorials. You make crocheting fun!

I did the "prototype" for a friend (who likes to hunt) in camouflage worsted yarn and made a "coordinating" scarf. He absolutely loved it, so did our youngest son. For the coordinating scarf I made 4hdc, 6 alternating front and back post dc, just like the hat, 4 hdc, 6 fpdc/bpdc, 4hdc , 6 fpdc/bpdc and 4 hdc. I tried making a scarf exactly with the same fpdc/bpdc like the hat but it ate up yarn like crazy and the store was out of more camo, so that is why I had to modify the scarf, but in the end, I think I like the modification better. Anyway, yet another wonderful design. You really are an extremely talented designer.

I’m having the same issue. Sad I haven’t found an explanation. What’s even stranger is that the tightness/smallness only happens with certain yarns. I have two that stretch properly and no need to edit the pattern, and three that were too tight and had to be unraveled to add to make it wider circumference. I’m not very experienced so I wish I knew what was going on with that 😕

Well, this is the most frustrating beanie pattern, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I'm gonna share my journey and hopefully help some people out.
Take 1- I started with a 5 weight yarn and a K hook, wanting to use this yarn I already had. The K hook was giving me a circle bigger than hers, so I unraveled it by the 4th or 5th row.
If you're looking at the bit in your hand and the bit in her hand and there's a noticeable size difference, change your hook size!
Take 2- I used the same 5 weight yarn and a slightly smaller J hook, which gave a perfect size... but I ended up with the same "curly Lay's potato chip" that everyone is describing. I have some experience making beanies and I quickly identified the problem.
If you fold your circle in half like an upside down taco (with the seams facing the way they should be. You don't want it inside-out for this!), it needs to literally look like an upside down taco- with a flat line on the top and a half-circle on the bottom. Geometry. Mine was curving up and had the shape of a gyoza. Or like a pie chart with 66% filled in. When I pinched off the extra fabric (to use my imagination and create that straight line) and traced it down to the base, it was 2 stitches too many.... which kindof made me face-palm because I've NEVER made a beanie with 12 in the ring. Never. Usually 8 is the start for a women's beanie. And she did recommend that 10 was for women's sizing option? So I gave that a try just to see...
I can't comment in general on how many to put in your ring... because with different yarn sizes and hooks, it's hard to tell. But FOLD YOUR CIRCLE and it should be a taco. If it's greater than a taco, remove stitches. If it's less than, you're probably gonna end up with a kid-sized beanie, try adding a stitch.
Take 3- Still the 5 weight yarn, J hook, and 10 stitches in my magic ring. I followed all her other instructions to a T, which was easy because she doesn't give stitch counts anyway... Sarcasm aside, I finally got a nice men's beanie! Mine is the chunky version, but it works. 👍 I just wanted to use up this particular yarn and this did the trick.
As a guide, I found a men's beanie that I could lay mine on top of as I was working with it, and compare/ make sure the size aligned. It helped me to make intuitive decisions.
I really hope this helps y'all. Good luck and don't stab yourself in the eyes with your crochet hooks today. You got this. 😺❤

It didn’t come out too wide for you?? Mine never narrowed. I had to decrease rows and I feel like it changed the shape of my hat. 😔

A really nice pattern and well instructed. My only comment, count stitches so that each row is the same, at first, it is really easy to begin to increase

I'm beginner, I'd preferred if you had mentioned how many stitches were made at the end of every row specially thise at the beginning. Are they multiple of 12? Thank you

Think I will give this a try. My husband has seen me working on a scarf and is wanting me to make him a beanie. I was going to try some color changes, but I think for my first one I will do a solid color.
