Lol, I love all yall who have been doing this for so long. I made it to 6 stitches by the time you had 53. Thank goodness for paus end rewind🤣. Thanks for this great tutorial.
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! I have limited crochet experience, but was able to adjust it to make a perfect tiny knit-look beanie for my stuffed turtle, exactly as I envisioned. Your generosity, and clarity in the video as well as the pattern are very much appreciated. Thank you!🥰
I’ve been crocheting since I was 13 years old. I’ve always hated making any hat unless it’s in the round, now at 65, I think I’ve found the perfect crocheted hat that’s not in the round! Yes, I like love this pattern and the method you used. I’ve made a few for Christmas, this morning after finishing another, husband asked when I was going to make him one because it was exactly what he wanted. 😮(yeah, that’s strange, he doesn’t usually wear any crocheted items I’ve made, but he said “I just like that style and it looks warm”. So…this hat is a huge win! 😊
It’d be nice to see a photo of the hat being worn on a head so we can see the fit. Be awesome to see it even as just a still photo of each hat in all videos. What do you think folks? Would you like to see it too? 😊
It would be nice to see the hat on a person's head but she has so many beautiful hat tutorials and I think people know how a hat look on a person's head, with or without a brim and with or without a pom pom on top.
I have never seen anyone crochet a hat like how you did the ends of the rows. It makes the hat sooooo much better at the top. You have me wanting to crochet every single one of your beanie hats. They are ALL very good looking and very well explained. Thank you for all your time that you put into these crochet tutorials you do.
This is the first hat I've crocheted. Thank you for the written and video instructions. It made it very easy. The hat is so nice and stretchy it fits everyone in my house - myself, husband and 14 yo son. Made it with worsted weight wool and its so cozy. Higly recommend!!
Hello and thank you for sharing this womderful pattern. Over the years, I have crocheted Irish lace, huge filet crochet projects, baby sweaters, loads of complicated afghans, doilies, oven mitts, beanies ----- you name it. But I couldn't figure out why you were dropping stitches at one end. Duh. Hahaha. I do love learning new things. This Christmas (2024) I bought camel hair wool from Snow Leopard Trust, so I could make my beloved a nice warm hat. I sure hope 6 oz of wool is going to be enough. We'll find out. Thank you for teaching me this great looking "knit" look stitch.
I am finishing my first beanie using this pattern. Next one I will be using a thinner 4# weight like Caron. Important to count stitches every row as I did a lot of frogging. I found this a very simple pattern, but a time consuming one. Not for fast hat donations.
That is a great looking hat! My guys are soooo picky about their hats. Love it! Also can I say I really like that you still put photos of what your making in the box that pops up when I get notification. I dislike the new trend of just a ball of yarn with a hook stuck in it.
I just finished the project :) I had to redo it a couple times, because my stitches were too tight at first. The second time I just stopped counting because it annoyed me - big mistake! I was halfway trough and noticed the pattern doesn't work because I lost stitches. The third time I counted stitches and made sure my stitches are loose. Though my yarn was way thinner than yours...I had to use a 3mm hook. So I made 16 sets instead of 10 and I had a 73-stitches foundation chain. But it was totally worth it. It fits really well. It's super stretchy
I just made this hat. I love it. I did add 5 extra stitches so I could fold it up more. And I weaved the yarn around the top and pulled it in to close. It looks great. Thank you. 😁
Excellent tutorial! Though I crochet a lot of baby hats, I tend to always knit adult sized hats, preferring the knit look. The downside of that is the time involved, as knitting takes so much longer than crocheting. This pattern appears to be a great alternative. It looks knit, but is much faster to produce, yay! Thank you!
I bought your pattern, but the video was so helpful, too! In the beginning I had some trouble with the slip stitch but then I relaxed my crocheting to get a little looser stitches, and it worked out beautifully! Thank you
I do appreciate that you feature this pattern. I have been looking for this pattern forever. My son had this beanie and it needed to be replaced. I now have this pattern it works great for me. Your video is so much appreciated
this was my first attempt at crochet and you made it so easy to follow along! still ended up a bit lopsided because i’m such a beginner but i got some more yarn and i’m back to try again😂 update: i did it!! it turned out so much better on my second try. i also used a heavier yarn & a 6mm hook and i really like how chunky it came out
im arab/french native so the english explanations confused me a bit, so i didn’t repeat the steps for maybe like 5-6 rows but then i repeated the pattern, it still worked !! so pretty. next time i will do it the right way since i understand now - took me 11 hrs to finish a extra large adulte beanie
What an excellent teaching video. Thankyou. My husband wants one for Christmas and at least I can crochet fast as if I knit it I’m to new at the magic ring. This will be warm with my worsted yarn
great pattern and video, thank you so much! the stitch choice leaves a super clean and stretchy result (i'll be wearing this every day for sure), but i underestimated the pain of making a whole project solely out of slip stitches in the back loop. it took me SO long to finish (to be fair, only about a week and a half), and i had to take several breaks for my sanity and hands... if i make it again i'm *definitely* using a thicker yarn!!
I came to say thank you very much for sharing with us your technique to reduce bulk at the top of the hat which I’ve never seen anywhere else on UA-cam. It’s so simple and customizable based on the size of the hat/yarn. I’ve made several beanies for my loved ones already and they are in love!
Thanks for a simple Main ( men's type ) beanie , I'm always looking for a good pattern that is stretchable for men's head. I like this one with Reg yarn.
The hat here is quite cute looking. I love the curve at the top. I have made some that were basically pulled up and had a pom pom perched . I think this will be a welcomed gift for the family , as well as friends who work in the outside.Thank you.

I love this tutorial thank you so much. It looks just like knitting. Since I don't know how to knit this is going to be a fun project for me. Thank you again for sharing your talent and knowledge! 🙂
Phenomenal! 😍 When I made a hat like this I did not about this technique to reduce this bulk at the top. I think I will frog my hat and re-do it using this ingenious technique. Thank you so much, Sarah, for sharing. ❤
These are beautiful..I know how to knit but I'm slow & making beanie christmas gifts for the menin my family I'd be finished by new year..this pattern is just what I need looks like knit..it s ❤quick like crochet
Wow! My first time of seeing this type of hat tutorial, I had seen this pattern on people but kept on wondering how it’s being made. Thank you for your well explained technique, I will definitely try it too, it’s very unique, I love it ✅
I've tried making this 2x, but I must be doing my stitches too tight. I can't get my hook through as easily as seen in the video. Maybe I could try the exact yarn. I will do that next. I refuse to give up on making this because I want to gift one to my dad for Christmas!!
Love this knit look beanie and the way you made it at the top. I also love all the yarns and colors you use in ur tutorials….these colors are gorgeous!! My nephews are gonna LOVE this style once I make them new ones with this pattern. 😊🙌🧶 Thank you so much for another great pattern & tutorial! 🧶🙌💜
Sarah, you have created the PERFECT pattern!! I need to make a ribbed watchman's cap. Is it possible to alternate between slip stitch and single crochet? I've seen patterns that are (3 sl st, 1 sc) repeated, but the tops are so bulky. Your method is fantastic at the top.
Just had to rip it out and start again realised I'd lost 5 stitches some how. Gonna be counting ever row this time. Not sure how I missed stitches maybe when I was jumping down the stepped rows. I love the design thou been looking for a way to not have bulk at the top of the hat. Thanks Sarah 😊
I loved making this beanie but I had an issue and I’m not sure how to fix it so any help would be great. My stitch count was the same but when I started to seam it up, one side was longer than the other. I was so disappointed because I loved the way it looked and I had spent SO much time making it. Thank you!
Maybe your tension on the yarn changed. It can happen. I remember when my kids were young they would have an issue, maybe a disagreement , or I had to make dinner . I'd go deal with whatever was going on and come back to crochet. I used to notice that depending on my mood or stress level I would accidentally crochet tighter or looser. So now 24 yrs later I am able to always watch my tension and crochet the same when I go back to a project. How far off is your one side from the other? If it's definitely the same stitch count you probably could just stitch it up and the hat may even itself out. If it's a big difference you will probably need to redo the last 9 rows and check your tension as you go with the other side. If that doesn't work maybe check again to see if your count is in fact off somewhere.
I love the short rows on the top of the hat such a great look. Here in Nevada it's been a hat wearing winter I've been obsessed with making hats this one is next on my list
Love this pattern. Made one for me - now my son-in-law wants one. I want to make a few rows of 'horizontal' stripes. Should not be hard, right. I could carry the yarn colors at the back. Would this work? I also plan to line hat with fleece so yarn carried should not catch on anything. Any comments welcomed. Thank you. You also are very thorough in pattern instructions.
love this hat, just finished making it. It fits so nice whether I fold up the rim or wear it more slouchie : ) It's making it's maiden voyage this week at my friends place for a fire and drinks!
HI all and thanks in advance to the gurus who share wisdom(!) - I'm a newbie and have gotten pretty good at this stich, though I somehow keep dropping/missing stitches and can't figure out where/how it's happening... any ideas?
Heya! I personally try to put a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each row I make! So like make ur first stitch, put a marker in, work the row, then put another marker in the very last stitch u make. It makes it much easier to count how many stitches u have after every row to make sure it stays the same every time! U can use something like old hoop earrings, safety pins, or anything you feel won’t fall out to mark ur stitches if u don’t have actual markers lol (I don’t have any either, I just use some cheap hoop earrings I got from Walmart as a kid haha)
This was so informative and beautiful and I made a beautiful cap. Please did you do a scarf with this same pattern?if yes, kindly send the link, I'm planning on doing one. Thank you so much
Wow 🤩 it’s beautiful but seems to be hard to make a a beginner. I have to watch this a few times before I will try to crochet alongside with you. Thank you so much 🙏😊
12:23 This pattern seems so easy but I am struggling. Somehow my 13th row goes in the direction of the “straight” end and not the stepped end. I’ve pulled it out and even used a row and stitch counter and still have the same problem. What am I doing wrong?
You would do it exactly the same. The only difference is thinner yarns would require more chain stitches to reach the desired length. And more rows for the desired width. Just make a chain row long enough to go from the crown of your head to just above your eyebrows, and add add an *extra* inch or so, because the length of the chain shrinks up a little once the first two or three rows are crocheted into it. Oh and if you want to fold up a brim, then add an additional 3 inches for that, as well. And for the width (which will be the circumference) you don’t need to know the number of rows in advance. Just keep repeating the sequence of rows done in this video until it’s wide enough to fit around your head. PS: same goes for bulkier yarns, but opposite. Same stitch pattern, same process, just LESS chains to achieve the length, and LESS rows to achieve circumference.
I wonder if you could make the hat using a chunky wool? And what moderations would be needed. Love the look of it. But the wool I wanted to use requires a 6.5 mm hook.
If you look around on the internet, you should be able to find a chart guiding you in the length and width of the size you want to create. Then, adjust your starting chain to the length of the height indicated, and work your rows until it’s the width indicated for the size you want to make. I hope this helps. 😊
I've always avoided making beanies/ hats because I'm no good at making circles. Then I saw this video & was sold. It's so neat & so easy. Thankyou so much for this tutorial. I just have one silly question & would appreciate if anyone could help me out. So at the top, how many times are we supposed to reduce the stitches to make that neat tapering top? Sorry, but I couldn't understand that part & only did it once. 🫣
I have such a hard time with slip stitch single crochet when I try to make them looser the stitches are horrible all uneven I tend to make them away too tight! I have trouble finding the back loop as the slip stitch lays the strict more to the front of the row? I loath slip stitching! I did learn how to half double slip stitch anyway.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was very curious at the beginning how you prevented the bulk at the crown of this hat....... genius!!! I’m going to try this if my arthritis clears up. Crocheting is one of my passions. Prayers please.🙏🧶🙏🧶
Can you please explain a little more how I should do it from min of 15:25 to become a bit piece hat. Should I just repeat doing crochet only one side? I mean the side with the curb.
Well! The easiest way is to repeat the pattern 9 more time. Same pattern. Slip stich in each row and keep minimising 2 stitches till 42; at that, go back and slip stitch all till 52 counts
Hi Sarah, I love this tutorial and can’t wait to make this beanie. Question for you, if I wanna make this into a messy bun beanie, is there a way to crochet a hair tie into the top instead of sewing it closed?
Laurie -> 14:36 Notice the lump I was referring to. It’s a loop from the CH1 of the previous row. Slipping your hook through that loop before going into the next row, prevents that.
I love the look of knit stitches but crochet is so much quicker than knit so this is a win win. Many thanks for this video. I am now a new subscriber.
pls NEVER delete this video! It was so informative! Thank you!!

Danke für den Tutorial. Sehr fein.
How to do it if i want to make it with thinner yarn? It is sooo lovely.
Great tutorial. Thank you!
Great tutorial for an awesome beanie!! Thank you so much. 🤩🤩
It's really a very beautiful beanie❤I love it 😍
Can you please tell me how can I make it for 0 to 6 months baby size?
Love this beanie! Making one now in LSU colors. 💜💛💜
It's very very neat,thank you.
Expertly done! Bravo.
Very-nice-tutorial.
Thank-you.
I love this tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m sure it will fit right as long as I follow your tutorial Thank you again ❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was very curious at the beginning how you prevented the bulk at the crown of this hat....... genius!!! I’m going to try this if my arthritis clears up. Crocheting is one of my passions. Prayers please.🙏🧶🙏🧶
I can’t crochet too fast and I have a week to get a beanie so I’ll be following this but using the HDC slip stitch method. 😂
Hello, please send the link for the yarn you used....
And beautiful work👌
Hi Sarah, I love this tutorial and can’t wait to make this beanie. Question for you, if I wanna make this into a messy bun beanie, is there a way to crochet a hair tie into the top instead of sewing it closed?
Laurie -> 14:36
Notice the lump I was referring to. It’s a loop from the CH1 of the previous row. Slipping your hook through that loop before going into the next row, prevents that.
Beautiful, thank you, I will try it!
I am enjoying your work 😍 great video you explain very well, I'm going to make a few hats ,thank you .I'm a new subscriber.
