In this video Mike Mentzer reveals the fundamental questions that philosophy seeks to answer. He further speaks of the “5 Branches of Philosophy,” what constitutes a man’s soul, and how one should not leave the development of one’s soul to chance. A fascinating snapshot of the importance of philosophy.

Not only a Great Bodybuilder but Mike Mentzer is a Great Philosopher.
I would’ve loved to witness a meeting between Mike and mrs Rand. Two great minds in proper philosophical discussions …
Hi Niklas. Mike would have loved that!
I wish I could “Love” your comment. A meeting between them would be epic.
As someone who gradutaed from the faculty of philosophy and interested in bodybuilding, Mike Mentzer is for me a role-model, amalgamation of intellectual and physical potentiality.
Thanks for your post.
Crazy that some of the things Mike said are still so relevant.
When he talks about the magazine’s I always think of social media. It’s the same in so many ways.
@@gunz9894 Good point, Gunz.
John…Thank you for your posts. I really enjoy hearing Mike in his own voice/words. I’m currently reading “High-Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way” and really enjoying his philosophical explanations in his program. I’m also just recently beginning what I would call my “philosophical journey” and Mike’s logical thought process is helping me in areas outside of bodybuilding.
Thank you again for your work and posts!

Thanks for your post, Chris! I’m glad you are finding value in certain of Mike’s thoughts.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE Yes…very much so. I went to his website only to find that it was no longer an active site. Attempted to reach out to Mrs. Joanne Sharkey only to find out about her recent passing and then connected with her daughter who told me they are still determining how to move forward. If there’s anything I can do to help continue Mike’s legacy, please let me know.
FYI, Mike is paraphrasing Ayn Rand here. I hope her work is part of your philosophical journey. I highly recommend starting with her fiction, especially The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Incredible stuff. (And sorry if I’m stating the obvious!)
I love this man
Reading Mike Mentzer’s articles in bodybuilding magazines when I was a teen was my gateway to Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism, whose books I would start to read a number of years later. He would quote from her novel The Fountainhead. That book remains my favorite novel. The title of this video (sans the question mark) is the title of one of her nonfiction books.
Thanks for your post, Joseph.
This is basically his retelling of Ayn Rand’s “Philosophy, Who Needs It” speech which she gave at a few venues and which appears in that book.
@@franklabate1921 It's more an overview of Objectivism, so those elements are certainly present here.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
Keep these videos coming. As an Objectivists, I love these!!!
Will do my best, Aporia.
holy shit. this man was it.
I am proud he suggested a book I already read. it's an amazing book.
Thanks John for this video of philosophy side of Mike. I'm huge fan of Mike and Ray and their intellectual work in proving without doubt scientific training and body mechanics and follow their principles. On the philosophy side i find a lot of his views a bit harder while i agree with some i find it difficult to grasp others. I'm so use to how he scientifically explains exercise science but find philosophy very subjective, maybe i need to read Ayn Rand but it will never change how i feel about Mike and Ray who were true gentlemen and was lucky enough to meet Ray in Australia 😊
Cheers John! 👍🏻
THANKYOU John, these are always a highlight!
Thanks, warrior3214!
Much appreciated ThankQ
Brilliant.
My favorite YT channel. Great content. God bless 🙂
Thanks, Thomas Jefferson!
Im suprised. Mike talk about conscciousness which is my interset sinse childhood. Thanks.
Hello John, I dont know if you read comments on old videos but it would be cool if you did! Damn, I didnt even know Mike and im listening to his clips, while im doing his workout, and when im drunk and just absorbing everything he says, he is almost Jesus like, he probably would hate the term and those around him, like a father figure that spoke his mind and always strived to better his mind, damn it makes me angry that he died, and happy that he lived, great, great man.
He was most certainly a fascinating guy. Thanks for your post.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE You replied! Yes, even tho im hidden away in the far northern woods of sweden, thanks to your videos I feel like i've known him, and miss him. Thank you John.
@@Vallhalia You're welcome. I'm glad you've gotten to know him and are enjoying the content.
Good morning world 🌎 from the Emerald Isle of Ireland. I personally want to thank John for the ongoing focus 🧘♀️ mike had always said. Carrying the torch of truth. I myself and my son have been working hard to build our home gym with all the current troubles in the world 🌎 coronavirus in the last few years created and completed our gym a few months ago
And working from all of mikes books 📚 and just briefly want to personally thank you John for continuing your journey going forward. And keeping focused on mikes advice all the way to eventually succeeding in high interest the correct way to train. Especially those current videos of mike expressing and explaining in logic the correct way of training method.
Thank you 🙏 again from myself and my son
Thanks for the kind words, Gerald. All the best to you and your son.
Philosophical meanderings are better with a glass of wine. Unfortunately, I had to give up drinking. Who needs physics? I do. That's what I do. Along with its philosophical underpinnings. And a mug of root beer.
John, as u know Mike is my favorite BBer but I have not looked into his philosophy teachings. I'm curious, did u get into it and if so, did u enjoy it?
Hi Bobby. I did (even more than talking bodybuilding since its application was broader). Philosophy was my major in university so I was predisposed to enjoy discussing it with Mike.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
Oh okay, I've been thinking about looking into it. I didnt realize it was your major, Very Cool
@@bobbyhunt3009 No worries. You will find that you agree with certain philosophers and disagree with others. What's intriguing was how they approach a subject and their use of logic. You don't have to embrace en toto any philosopher's beliefs -- as your life experience counts for something too. Mike found himself in accord with different philosophies and philosophers throughout his life, depending upon what intellectual nourishment he was seeking. He read Sartre, Camus, Whitman, Nietzsche, Suzuki and Mishima during his twenties. He came to Objectivism later in life when ethics and epistemology became a strong interest. Don't lose yourself in the journey among the great minds of the past. Your ideas count.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
I Thank You Very Much for all your help on this subject and for the list of people to check out also for being so nice.

@@bobbyhunt3009 No worries, sir.
Do you know John Heart “Mr. America Heart”?
i did not agree with mike on his belief that god did not exists, or beinf an atheist. but those last few lines couldnt be more true
John was Mike a Christian, I noticed him mentioning religion?
Hi Bobby. No, as long as I knew Mike he was an atheist.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE
Oh, okay, I have never heard about his religious beliefs. Seems the smarter people dont believe in religion. I try to be a Christian but I do not judge anybody as many many times I too have doubts.
Sounds like he’s a humanist, or enlightened thinker.
@@user-xe5fz6se9j Je definitely was an atheist. At least, in his last interview before his death. He was that he didn't believe in God, or Hell or Heaven.
@@bobbyhunt3009 Your comment is pretty harmful to yourself. Seems like you thinks that, by being a Christian, you aren't going to be smart or that other people, by not being Christians, will be by definition smarter than you. If you still thinks that way, you need to check yourself.
Is this AI or an actual recording
Actual recording (in studio) from 1996.
Ok
Funny how Mike uses the word soul, but was a atheist. Seems like in this, Mike wasn’t 100% sure there wasn’t a God. There actually is a higher power, but not in the same way religion have us believe. Check out the work of Tom Campbell MBT theory on you tube. I’m sure Mike would have found his theory very interesting if not realised he was speaking the truth!
Mike uses the word "soul" in the Objectivist sense; that is, your consciousness (thoughts, ideas and emotions).
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE well in fact that is what we are consciousness. I infinite Mind.. but the brain 🧠 and mind are not the same things. consciousness is outside of the body. There for when the body dies, consciousness lives on.. Did Mike believe the mind and brain were the same thing John?
@@Lonewolf__666 Yes, like Bertrand Russell, he believed that mind was a product of the brain and that when the brain rots after death, that which it produced during life (i.e., thought/s) was no longer produced. I think he would have viewed concepts such as "eternal mind" as akin to a spirit realm, which he definitely did not believe in. He may have been more receptive to such an idea when he was in his twenties; when reading about such concepts as the "collective unconscious" and Zen (the illusion of self, the oneness of entities with the uni (i.e., "one")-verse, etc. But he would not have entertained such thoughts during the final twenty years of his life (in my opinion, at least).
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE thanks for that John. Well, I was basically a atheist, till I found the works of Tom Campbell. He explains things in a very logical way.
the fool says in his heart, "there is no God".
started lifting in high school ,the 80’s and 90’s came around . 1 dude changed the way bodybuilding was to become. I knew he had the same access to the drugs as all the others but he was just more massive. That dude was Dorian Yates who adapted some of Mentzers ideas . He felt 1 set to maximum failure was enough but did 2 to make sure
