Here is another video, excerpted from my telephone interview with Mike Mentzer in 1990, in which Mike explains why he became interested in philosophy, and its practical use in daily life. He also touches on his greatest intellectual influences.

A sincere Thanks to You, Mr. Little. I've followed you for years and have continually been impressed by your work. I'm a 77 year old Traditional Martial Arts Instructor (Shotokan Karate-Do). I've taught for 51 years and have authored five martial art magazine articles on karate technique and biomechanics as well as martial arts history, and a comparison study on various Kata. In writing these pieces I came to admire your work all the more. It's not an easy the thing to do well. lol! I read your volume on Bruce Lee and was very impressed. I was an aquintence of Bruce when I taught in LA. Actually, I knew Bruce's wife, Linda, a little better. Wonderful supportive Lady. I lost contact once I returned to New York City. (I'm a native New Yorker). Again, I have read quite a few of your volumes and I have never been disappointed. Excellent clear and concise writing, with a dab of good humor. I remember one of your volumes that taught how a resistance trainer could use Time in place of numbers of Sets and Reps during a workout. It was outstanding in it's clarity and precision. And, I found that type of workout format to be very productive. Thank You for that, and all your other works in the field of Physical Training and Martial Arts. I look forward to your next book. Kudos to You.
Can you believe i just finished Ayn Rand The Fountainhead and now stsrted Atlas Shrugged audio book because i came across Mike's videos through this channel, wow Ayn Rand was great, great characters and greatly written, thank you, I'm on my 2nd round of Mikes workout routine, love it, thank you and of course i will listen to Ayn Rand Objectivism audio book

I read Ayn Rands material after Mike talked about it in the muscle mags in the mid 90's.. I never thought I could read We The Living, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. Rational Self Interest...doing what you want to do without feeling the need for altruism. Maybe queue up Rush's "The Trees". I suffer from a not so rare case of Mentzermania in my blood.

John, thanks again. Do you have any actual footage of Mike training?
No, unfortunately. I wish I did. When I went to visit Mike in California in 1986 I didn’t have a video camera. I did take some still photos of him working out that were used in a bodybuilding publication in England, but I would’ve loved to have had video.
John did you ever work out with mike doing his heavy duty training?

@@davideterminator75 Yes. I remember on the day I took the photo that Mike told me that Ray was on dialysis.

Cults are too demanding.
If so, it is the only cult that encourages members to think for themselves. All of its literature is freely available for people to read; there is no mystical gatekeeper who is the guardian of secret or esoteric knowledge. Consequently, people are free to read what the philosophic principles are and accept or reject whatever elements they wish. If they accept all of Objectivism’s principles, then they tend to define themselves as being Objectivists, much like if you accept all of principles of a certain strain of Existentialism, you can consider yourself to be an Existentialist, or a Postmodernist, a Kantian, or a Logical Positivist. @@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE As a physics professor and friend of Mike Mentzer from long ago, I understand why Mike would be drawn to Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum (Ayn Rand) as she was a philosophical pit-bull who never backed down against her detractors. Similarly, Mike had his detractors yet he stayed the course. Mike like Ayn Rand was a refreshingly intelligent spokesperson for his thoughts. Being in science, I can both admire and appreciate that fact - whether or not I’m in agreement on a particular point of discussion. His views were his own, Rand's views were her own and my views are my own. By contrast, America and the world for that matter has become an overflowing toilet of one-mind (i.e., ideas, notions, opinions etc.) fits all mental turds.

@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE Right or wrong, correct or incorrect, fair or unfair the name Ayn Rand and the word cult are connected in the minds of many on-and-off the internet as you can find out for yourself if you choose. Personally, I'm more concerned about ideas, notions and opinions in-and-of themselves than all else. In other words, exclusive of other influences or extraneous factors; including the people involved (along with those who approve or disapprove).

I think that's what's confusing me. You also said (perhaps as a means of supporting premises) that "in the minds of many" Objectivism is a cult. I'm not sure your two positions go together; i.e., not caring about extraneous factors only ideas and the fact that in "the minds of many" a certain (right or wrong, correct or incorrect, etc.) viewpoint exists. I'm presuming your view is that Objectivism is a cult (which was why you felt compelled to post the term). If so, you're certainly entitled to hold that opinion. That you would post that comment not knowing if it was right or wrong, correct or incorrect, is odd (to me at least) but whatever floats your boat.
