  • What is philosophy - and how is it relevant to my life? Ayn Rand answered these questions in her address to the senior class of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1974.
Rand challenges the idea that philosophy belongs only in the ivory tower. Instead she argues that, whether we realize it or not, we all hold and act on philosophic ideas - and philosophy is a crucial, practical need of human life.
This illustrated audio lecture is a great starting point for those new to philosophy or to Rand’s ideas. The talk became the lead essay in Rand’s book Philosophy: Who Needs It.

“As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation - or let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears, thrown together by chance, but integrated by your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy and fused into a single, solid weight: self-doubt, Like a ball and chain in the place where your mind's wings should have grown.” #ifthisisntniceidontknowwhatis

To the average person she is a genius, but to a philosopher she is average.

@@notthemashiach567 Given that many philosophers aren't as smart as they think, that sort of undermines your wisecrack.

26:30 specifically addresses the US Army; ignore the contemporary examples if you disagree, and focus on the essentials.
32:00 conclusion that may not make sense to those without knowledge of Objectivism and History. Focus on her principles, regardless of whether you think US lived up to it.

You have reaped the words off my mouth. Yes, we look at the american imperialism differently now, but the essence of her words, the principles, can lead us out of this mess

Whether it lived up to it in the future ('the future' relevant to 1974) is irrelevant to whether it lived up to it then.

At what point do I cease to exist, and at what point do I know that I am? Can there ever be answers to questions that falter? To be is to be that can never be altered. Empty your mind for clarity of view the absence of thought is not the absence of you. We come not out of the world, nor whither away. If all is oneself where does one stray?
