- We explain planetary shielding on today's episode of Star Wars Legends Lore!
Check out my video with the Family Bovine: • High Skill Fortnite Mo...
Every faction in Star Wars Legends used planetary shields at some point, from the Galactic Empire and their Death Star, the Rebel Alliance and New Republic with Coruscant, and basically any one else who needed to protect an important world. Learn about how they work, how to beat them, and the tactics used by Grand Admiral Thrawn during his invasion.

EckhartsLadder Will you ever do the Covenant vs the Yuuzhan Vong?
EckhartsLadder hey do you think there could ever be a planetary shield that was strong enough to survive a super weapon like the death star

Director Kid I think I remember you from a live stream
I was just explaining Planetary Shielding to my friend right before you uploaded this, no joke. Great video

No love for my boy Sha’a Gi? My man.
Jay I felt like it'd be unfair to the competition, I mean name me a more iconic duo???
When in battle, don't ships divert power from the particle shields to the ray shields? Since majority of their offensive weapons are DEWs, they'd put as much power to the ray shields as they can, right?
Depends who they're fighting. Some factions in Star Wars still use projectile weapons. I don't know of any spacefaring factions that do, but on the ground, the Tusken Raiders use almost exclusively slugthrowers (traditional guns)
The Rebels also use a lot of projectile based stuff in space: lots of bombs and torpedoes. So does the Zann Consortium.
Apparently there is a planetary shield stoping you from doing more starship vs. Please do more starship vs. man. I love you content but starships are the best part of Star Wars and pitting them against each other is super fun.
We'll get one this week!
+EckhartsLadder how about VOYAGER VS BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ?.
Which Voyager?
And which Galactica?
+ThatRedGuy On Steam The Voyager Commanded by Janeway and the same Galactica he used before against I think A Second Class Star Destroyer.
So TOS galactica?
I would imagine most ships only have Ray shields, hence why asteroids could take out Star Destroyers in ESB. I would also imagine that this is due to cost.
In the ESB novelization it talks about the shields blocking asteroids. That one ISB dies after its shields are overloaded.
Well if that's the case then the rules really make no sense to me. In ESB we see the asteroid take out an ISD. In Rogue One we see the Y wings launch their Ion torpedos that ignore the ISD's shields and go straight to crippling the ship. In TLJ (as much as I think it was a bad film) we see Kylo Ren's wingmen launch missles/torpedos that ignore the Raddus' shields, destroying the bridge. In games like Empire at War, bombers are a massive threat because they launch torpedos which ignore shields allowing them to take out important hardpoints, hence why you need anti fighter/bomber ships - giving it the whole rock/paper/scissors mentality, which works really well for space combat in the game. Just in general it explains why bombers are such a massive threat, and necessary, in the Star Wars Galaxy. But if what you say is true, then why is it not more like Star Trek? - where you need to use phasers to drop the Shields - then use torpedos to finish the ship off? In which case bombers really arn't that big a threat because little ships arn't big enough to drop the shields of a large starship in the first place.
On a side note, any movie that needs other media like novels and comic books to explain what is happening in the movie is a sloppily written movie. That being said, I love your Channel Eckharts Ladder and I am now subscribed.
SSJCLIFF Ion weapons fire ionized particles that disrupt electronic systems so the generators on a Star destroyer were disrupted in rogue one, I imagine a planetary shield like the one at scarif is to powerful to be disrupted by torpedos.
As for the last Jedi in the film they route all power to the aft shield to protect themselves from the blaster fire from snokes ship.
More then the cost of losing the ship with crew to a stray piece of debris?
The Debris will grant them a merciful death instead of what Vader would do to them.
Ah, how times have changed. I was one of your first 500 subscribers.
I remember man!

I watched his videos around 10-15k. Now, I didn’t sub until like 75k, but we don’t talk about that.
Jrod ProductionStudios I was one of the 10,000. Hahaha, how our child has grown. XD
I believed the first video I saw on this channel was the 5 Strange Things in the Unknown Regions and unsub a few weeks after. Because of the lack of content but came soon after regretting about it and look at you now wow great job and this video was excellent.
I've always wondered about this. What a great video as usual!
I loved how that X-WING literally bounced across the shield like it was a solid wall.
Anti-planetary shielding faceoff; Torpedo Sphere vs. Mandator IV
Heh, you've used an image of an old version for planetary shielding from the last game I worked on, Novus AEterno at 1:22. Funny to see that randomly pop up.
Factions compare best frigate
An alliance between Zann Consortium, the Hutts, the Black Sun, the Smugglers Alliance and Death Watch as they were up to the Galactic Civil war and the Yuuzhan Vong war vs these factions:
1: The Galactic Republic.
2: The Separatist Alliance.
3: The Galactic Empire.
4: The Rebel Alliance.
5: The New Republic.
6: The First Order.
7: The Yuuzhan Vong.
I love your channel so much, been watching it almost everyday for the last year or two :3
5:05 if you pause it at the exact right time, you actually can see the Death Star's beam hit the shield
Revans Sith Empire vs Galactic Empire
Please do this video
Space Battleship Yamato vs Super Star Destroyer Eclipse
This really clarified a lot of questions about shields. Good stuff!
Congrats on the baby Eck and 100k-200k subs didnt last too long. Good for you. Heres to another 100k💪
Love these lore type videos.
Nice subject and video as always! :)
Great content couldn't be better keep it up 😊
Love vids Eck
X-83 Twintail vs. Tie Defender (the Legends version)
Twintail has the tech advantage, it is literally a century ahead of the TIE Defender in technology.
The E-Wing beat the TIE Defender in one of Eck’s videos. I really, really doubt that the TIE can win against an X-83 Twintail.
@eckhartsladder awesome video as always. One other tactic to consider was Thrawn's use of turbolasers to create tsunamis to get around localized shields in order to destroy planetary turbolasers and ion cannons. Brilliant . As should be expected from the Grand Admiral. (Source: the Trawn novel)
"which is why the millenium falcon has to come in via hyperspace"
neatly brings us back around to the old "why doesn't the empire have hyperspace-equipped planet-buster bombs?" question.
I have an idea for a star ship vs episode, what would it be like for a Kotir class Cruiser Carrier, went against an Allegiance Class Heavy Star Destroyer?
We know from the clone wars that shields have to cycle after being activated as well.
Nathan Redorange They have to cool and recharge. So basically the same thing when you thing about it .
Trench's shielding on his providence dreadnought? That was thermal shielding, not traditional deflector shields.
TheMatrixGamer Yeah, however I’m 95% sure that Deflector Shields, and probably all shields, have to recharge when heavily damaged or taken down. When shields go down due to enemy fire, the generator is overheated. So the generator would have to cool, and recharge the shields before they can be brought back online.
Star Destroyer So do they cycle or not?
All of the ships present at the battle of coruscant vs the byss fleet at the time of shadow hand
Master Mickman The coruscant fleet would destroy the byss fleet. There were atleast 3000 capital ships at the battle of coruscant.
But there were tons of ships that took part in shadow hand
What music do you use for your videos? Normally I ignore the background music on lore videos, but YOUR music actually has me wanting to always watch your videos. The soundtrack is so... captivating, almost as much as the lore itself.
Good work on this video! As usual. Do you think every major planet had shielding? From Rebels we saw that even a small outer rim world such as Lothal had strong enough city (perhaps planetary) shielding to withstand an orbital bombardment from at least 3 ISDs.
Krogan no genophage vs Brutes as a race, at the highest point of their "rule" in the covenant. Also a claw to claw fight?
Can i get a like
Biggest pet peeve about the force awakens is that when the falcon exits hyperspace in atmosphere it should have generated a massive shock wave due to the displaced air as it warps in.
But can they block an attack from the Swolo family?
Thunderbolt Starfury from Babylon 5 vs the Sabre from Halo Reach.
VF-1s from SDF Macross (not Robotech) vs the Union Overflag from Gundam 00.
Please EchartsLadder look into these machtups.
I really like your videos!
Have a nice day!

Could Starkiller base survive Godzilla Earth invasion please?
So I always thought that an M1 Abrams would wipe the floor with an AT-AT because energy shields wouldn't protect against shells, or that an ICBM could easily destroy a Star Destroyer in orbit. I guess this isn't that case?
Well an at at still has crazy as fuck strong metal armor but Abrams is faster and could run up and shoot it in the neck
AT-AT's have no shielding, only very thick armour. The armour is probably to thick for a Abrams to penetrate but the Abrams is faster and more agile then the AT-At and might hit the weakspots. It should be keeped in mind that AT-Ats are more transporters and artillery than a main battle force.
But forget hitting a Star Destroyer with an ICBM.
Depends on the setting of the particle shield.
Probably will stop a shell yeeted across a hill, but close enough it may push through.
Honestly, the best counter to AT-AT's would probably be oversized mines - when an attack is imminent, you transmit the arm codes, and the mines explode inside or right next to the particle shield.
Yeah, the "shield wall" over Scarif really impressed me!
even 20 minuets after upload there's more that 1'000'000 comments :)
The point you made about Blizzard Force landing outside the shields on Hoth is correct according to legends. Wedge mentions it in one of the X-wing books while planning an assault
This is awesome
Could u please do versus betwen the executor vs the supremacy?loved the vid btw😙
We need one of those .
Can you do a who would win 40k: Necrons Vs. Star Wars: CIS
I would love to see two mainly robotic armies fight it out. And plz keep up the videos, they're amazing!
Do every Sith empire compression next
Eckharts Ladder can you please do a ranking for the deadliest Assassin/Spec Ops droid? IG-88 vs Darktrooper vs HK-47 vs That human looking chick droid from Shadows of the Empire vs the Spec Ops droids from CIS
Hey Eck, my proposition for a future video is more of an idea is for a new series. The idea would be for an iconic "supercapital" ship like the eclipse or the executor, give it a small escort fleet and pin it against a fleet that would leave the playing field even. The fleet make up and size would be completely up to you; whatever you feel stands a chance against the super's. I think this could work with your current series, star ship verses, or as somewhat of a stand alone. Super Capital ships are one of my favorite aspects of the star wars universe and a combination of your knowledge, enthusiasm, voice, and story telling capabilities would make for an amazing few videos. Either or everything I've watched that you've made I've loved; keep up the amazing work.
P.S. I loved both episodes of the after endor series and would love to see them return. You are an amazing story teller!
Replicators vs a Unified Star Wars universe (172nd try now, *_I._** WILL NEEEEVER EEEVER GIVE UP!!!)*
please do a video about the unsc infinity.would love to see it
Viscount vs. Finalizer
RIP Finalizer IMO
Viscount wins
Here is a question that I have been itching to ask: when it comes capital ships, do shields have to be lowered to fire turbolasers or physical missiles? What about launching fighters? Thanks Eck, love the videos!
The Falcon bypassing Starkiller Base's energy shield like that bothered me somewhat. I mean, in Legends the reason ship couldn't get that close to a planet was because of the planet's, or other celestial body's, gravity well would pull the ship out of hyperspace before it got to close to the planet. I suppose the external gravity ruptures the hyperspace bubble or something like that.
Anyway that's how interdictor cruisers work, they manipulate gravity using gravity well generators to literally yank ship out of hyperspace. Fun side note, in the Tie Fighter short film you see an interesting extra use for the gravity well generators to deflect proton torpedoes launched by a flight of Y-wings, I thought that was neat.
Why don’t they just use mirrors? (Not for anything big of course) It’s cheap and can reflect lasers!
Edit: guys it’s a joke
Star Wars lasers aren't really lasers, they're just called that.
BXOTROT ___
Yeah TurboLasers fire ionized gas. Or what it is lazily know. Plasma.
Weren't they called lasers becouse they used lasers to heat up tibana gas and turn it into plasma?
Warwolf 300
That's in the process yes. But what is shot our of the batteries is a condense plasma bolt. A mirror wouldn't be melted to much as exploded as the energy in these bolts tend to explode after impact with the object.
I wasn't supporting the author of the comment.
About the falcon energy shield thing, this is how I understood it:
"The Shield has a fractional refresh rate...nothing slower than Lightspeed can get through it"
To me, this means that the shield is not continuously powered. Instead, it cycles on and off constantly. I'm just taking the "fractional" as oversight when they mean "really fast", so fast that the refresh rate is high enough that the gap between refreshes (when the shield is down) is a fraction of a millisecond, likely. So, if you want to get through the gap in the refresh cycle (since touching the shield would destroy your vessel), you have to make it through incredibly quickly, all in that short refresh window.
It's kinda hand-wavy, but it's the best way I could come up with for the statement to make sense.
When he was talking about thrawn's tactics all I could think of was illusion 100
You should do a battle between the keldabe and the nebula class battleships.
How many Death Star ones would it take to destroy our sun?
Colin Kerns How many star destroyers does it take to take out our sun?
What about my favorite starfighter, the Sun Crusher?
Colin Kerns It's a bit complex: the sun is a star so it can't really be destroyed like that because it is just plasma anyway. If ISDs attack it, the sun will just get brighter because they are adding mass.
Starkiller Base vs. 2x Death Star II's vs. 3x Death Star I's
itwontcomeout5678 It's a bit of a pointless battle: if Starkiller Base isn't destroyed first then it will win easily because it can destroy multiple targets at once.
A new idea for galactic versus:
STAR WARS 2M Saber tank
vs.
HALO Skorpion tank(whatever type you want)
vs.
COMMAND AND CONQUER GDI Mammoth MK III
I'd love to see which of theese tanks comes out on top.
You should do a legends lore video about world devastators
Cool vids
The mighty Bane congratulates you with your child and hopes that he/she will be strong with the force and born in good health!
If I may offer my humble opinion, you should consider adding the Metroid Universe to your analyses and multiverse videos.
Do a video on the raddus's shields. They seem to be pretty powerful to withstand all of that laser fire in TLJ. *Would the dreadnought's cannons have been able to one shot the raddus?*
Can you please do a video on ship classes like dreadnoughts and medical frigets because I never get the idea of having hundreds of super star destroyers as your fleet.
For the Falcon hyperspacing throw a shield is when the shield changes its phasing or frequency or even just drops for a second to renergize the shield capacitors/swaping over to new fully charged ones, is only a very brief micro second to fly throw and hyperspace would be one and only way to get throw if luck and timing was on your side... or the Force
Do Planetary Shield versus Plot Armor!
The Falcon got onto Starkiller Base because Hyperspace is basically a sub dimension. The ships never move faster than light, they just move at lightspeed over a shorter distance through and alternate dimension that overlaps with realspace, energy doesn't transfer over so shielding like that basically doesn't exist so you can pass though, but matter exists in the same relative position which is why you have to route around things like planets, stars, and black holes.
Can the UNSC and the Covenant survive and beat the Angel Zeruel from Evangelion on Earth when the Covenant first attacked? Zeruel appears out of nowhere in this and is laying waste to everything and everyone that it sees and gets in it's way while trying to look for Lilith on this version of Earth to start the next Impact
It's also kind of Interesting that planetary Shields were a big part of the second sith wars that was one reason why the Republic could hold it territory
nearly 200k subs i was here when u only have a thousand subs!
Do a all Canon TIE Variants and TIE Legends Variants.
Cool video! I think shields in most sci-fi franchises are a bit inconsistent and are really as strong as the writers need them to be. LOL
Can you make a video on planetary ground to space cannons?
fractional refresh rate, meaning that for a fraction of a second (1/1000th or some number) the shield is essentially between pulses and off, so the only way to get thru it is over lightspeed where that time interval is much longer. no one usually does this because it is almost certainly fatal to anyone who is not as crazy and lucky as han solo, as they would hit the planet in a nanosecond.
Star Wars has some of the biggest tech problems I've ever seen in a major sci-fi universe. If a planet has enough excess power that they can create a shield that covers the entire planet. That world should also have such massive defense batteries that it could one-shot nearly any space-craft.
do some sort of comparison with two ships first the Farragut class battle cruiser or the federal corvette (Ima just keep posting these till u do somethin with either of these ships)
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how strong the shield is, if you hit it with enough mass and speed, the energy disapated by the shield would become heat and that heat would melt the stuff inside the shield. Basic thermodynamics and laws of energy say screw your shields.
"Sheilding not only stops energy but phisical objects...like an X-Whing."
My main question is to do with sizes. The Hoth shield generator structure wasn't all that large. And yet, it is apparently strong enough to withstand an orbital bombardment from several star destroyers and a super star destroyer, whose mere reactors are likely much larger than that shield generator was. Even if we say that there is a larger reactor underneath the shield generator that is powering it, I can't imagine they have THAT large of a structure buried in the ice.
Which begs the question. Why not simply build a planetary shield generator onto a capital ship? Even if you yourself also can't fire through it, you could still use it as a half-sphere wall or something for ships to use as cover for when they need to recharge their conventional shields and let their weapons systems cool down.
There is no way that Hoth shield generator was too big to at least put on a calimari ship. And the ability to apparently tank everything a SSD can throw at you and any ship near you seems like it would be a great tactical benefit in a battle. And if all else fails and the enemy circumvents the shield, you could at least potentially zap an imperial star destroyer by ramming the shield into them.
I'm guessing these planet shields also have a system of projecting all it's radiation outward. Shield radiation was the reason that personal shields are rarely used. Radiation poisoning would just build up and nullify the point.
I don't know if tensor fields however generate radiation.
Is it plausible that a tensor field could argument an armor's defense? They were used to hold together the weight of landing ships in Episode one.
I love the way he talks about starkiller base almost saying I don't give a fuck
What about a planetary shield to stop hyperspace jumps? That could be interesting
The Millennium Falcon had to enter Starkiller Base via hyperspace obviously because shields don't extend hyperdimensionally. Hyperspace isn't just going really fast, it's moving through a different dimension. Which is why hyperspace rams make no sense.
Just an educated guess about Starkiller Base’s shields. But based on how Han left that barge, I’m going to assume that he entered the shield the same way that he left the ship that he used to reacquire the Falcon with the only ‘miscalculation’ of how fast Starkiller Base was actually moving.
do a Viper mk II ( bsg) vs a TIE interceptor
I put my money on the Viper.
Good video, but I think the whole of how the Millennium Falcon was able to get through the shield had to do with the fact that Hyperspace travel is outside the universe... therefore if you pop back into real-space at the right moment, you can end up inside the shield barrier. The problem is.. it is insanely risky.. the window you have is incredibly small.. probably due to the amount of distance you cover in small amounts of time while in hyperspace. A large ship like a star destroyer probably has no chance of surviving such an attempt, just due to its sheer size and terrifyingly small margin for error. Just look at how the Millennium Falcon nearly crashed and burned from its attempt.
Recusant Class Light Destroyer vs Assault Frigate Mark II.
[The Last Jedi SPOILERS ahead]
So something I realized is that TFA explains, through that bit about being able to pass through the shield at lightspeed, why Admiral Holdo's move in TLJ works. Instead of smashing into the Supremacy's shield, like you'd expect, she's able to pass through it freely in Hyperspace and strike the Supremacy directly. We're shown that shipboard shields can stop massive asteroids quite happily, and could probably resist the energy of a lightspeed impact, so being able to bypass the shields is how the Hyperspace ram is even able to work at all.
2:10 - that was the reason WHY Coruscand had TWO shields...
Eckharts whats your favorite star wars faction E.U. and Disney
How about for your next versus match you put the gdi mammoth mk2 from command and conquer vs the AT-AT. Both would be a good match against each other. Just watch how the mammoth mk2 shrugs off a hit from a nod defense tower called the obelisk of light a laser based defensive structure and then proceeded to destroy the base. Or where the AT-AT gets taken down from a mass driver cannon in rebels.
The supremacy vs 2 executors or 4
Why not just use the Holdo Maneuver and fly expendable old capital ships with hyperdrives into the planetary shields. That tactic is basically unstoppable according to The Last Jedi. In fact, in Legends Admiral Daala planned to sacrifice a star destroyer specifically to take out Coruscant.
(Attempt 5)
Do you a video on the Greater Maldrood
Hey EckhartsLadder, do the blacklight virus and or the flood vs the necromorphs, like if all 3 galaxies were to collide and the flood would encounter both blacklight and necromorphs and would see the necromorphs as a bigger threat to them and would make an alliance with the blacklight virus, in this scenario the flood would have just created a gravemind and the blacklight virus would have completely taken over planet earth and the sea would be ruled by Alex Mercer and all landmass would belong to some other super being
attempt 16
Suggestion sword fleet mass effect 3 vs galaxy alliance fleet at yuzhan tar or systems alliance fleet at earth mass effect 3 vs unsc fleet defense earth (yuzhan tar suggested 14 times earth defense fleets suggested 3 times)
I wonder if you could use kyber crystals as an power multiplier to enhance shield strength on a planetary shield?
For a vehicle vs: AT-AA vs the AA Wraith
For a person vs: Obi wan vs Thel ‘Vadam (AKA the arbiter from Halo’s 2, 3 and 5) in melee combat
1. Funny idea, but kinda useless to let them fight each other would be better to show which one is better as AA-vehicle.
2. My points for Obi wan, Thel'Vadam could not overcome the Jedi Powers of a Jedi Master. In melee there is (nearly) no chance he could win.
Providence class Carrier vs Harrower class Dreadnought. Attempt 9. I care not for the technology gap. It must be done!
Can you do factions compared heavy blasters?
