The Torpedo Sphere itches the "giant geometric death machine that looks silly but works perfectly" scratch the Borg imparted on me so I immediately loved it on sight
“Oh no! It’s the Death Macaroon!”
Man you should see Battletech warships. Eggs, eggs everywhere!
I want a Borg assimilated torpedo sphere under my direct control.
@@louisbabycos106 Lmao yes, imagine just rocking someones world with borg munitions
@@starsilverinfinity
I was thinking of the durability enhancement but also Borg munitions would be cool as well .
I kind of like the general idea. It has a dedicated role. It has reasonable limitations given its role (though I don't see why it couldn't carry some fighters). It's strong, but not OP. It's not stupidly big. A few dozen of these make a lot more sense than a Death Star, and would cost a lot less also.
Physical munitions would still be astronomically expensive compared to energy weapons. It is obvious why so few were produced.
If a planetary ion cannon can disable a Star Destroyer with a single salvo, it can probably do the same to a torpedo sphere.
@@MightyGalvatron If the rebels had weaponry that powerful, why were they running all the time?
@@Mark-in8ju Because they were little more than guerillas, not a fully-equipped planetary defense force. Like Dornea, for example. Look it up on the wiki. The Legends version.
i'm not 100% sure but wasn't the Death Stars beam near infinitely reusable since it uses kybers? also the Death Star's sheer scale made it a really good propaganda tool which debatably is better then actual offensive ability
In theory, torpedoes could be shot down before they even have a chance to weaken a shield. That's probably why bombers have to close the distance before they can unleash their payloads against big warships.
In other words, torpedo spheres are not without drawbacks. They're certainly no substitute for a Death Star. And I can't imagine they're much better armored or shielded than anything else in the fleet.
But you need to have a dedicated weapon to shoot down the torpedoes and a barrage of torpedoes is hard to shoot down
I mean sure in theory the torps could be shot down - but a Torpedo Sphere doesnt work alone, so while its sending like 500 proton torpedoes at your shield you'll probably be having to simultaneously deal with an Imperial warfleet and its own munitions and fighters, which would suitably tie up any defenders tbh
@@starsilverinfinity Shields don't have to work alone either. They can be supplemented by warships, fighters and artillery as well.
@@Elipsyclips We have those today. Just look at the Phalanx CIWS.
ua-cam.com/video/dKrpEfNaQO8/v-deo.html
Or the Patriot missile system:
ua-cam.com/video/MzpTmYvLDdM/v-deo.html
@@MightyGalvatron Of course, but when you're fighting simultaneously against your enemies own warships, fighters, and (space) artillery aswell its probably hard to over focus on one or the other lest they overrun you - focus on the missiles and suddenly their fighters have an easier time harassing and cutting yours down, etc etc
Looks like something from Dune, it's such a weird and cool design!
Also, as an aside, it's Canon according to the Rebel Handbook and Wookieepedia, which is awesome! Also loved seeing it in the Rebel Handbook, but was disappointed when I found out the artwork might've been traced, back when all that was going on.
It's a very op ship. The immense firepower is just insane.
This is one of the things I love about Star Wars. So many weapons that are so OP and yet no one cares because it’s fun and cool.
"40K has entered the chat"
@@tootiredtostop1606 "...using a warp drive that sails ships literally through hell. Some demons came too."
In the Expanded Universe there was a weapon which could automatically cause a star to go supernova, there was even one which could theoretically blow up the entire universe if I'm not mistaken
@@MariOmor1 Not familiar with the latter one, but the former is (or at least includes) the infamous Sun Crusher, which is the epitome of OP nonsense with it being an essentially indestructable ship the size of the Falcon that can just fly THROUGH star destroyers, and has torpedoes that make stars go supernova.
That said, in canon Starkiller base did in fact do its name justice by essentially killing its own star by sucking it in as a power source, even if it didn't blow the star up.
@@MariOmor1 late but you're thinking of the shawken device
When West End Games first came up with the Torpedo Sphere for the RPG, our GM's immediate reaction was "they made this up so players could blow up something other than the Death Star".
I thought the good idea would be to retarget the torpedoes to attack the shield generator as soon as the shield was penetrated and torpedoes slipped through. Even if a hole was in the shield, it's very unlikely it would be between the Torpedo Sphere and the shield generator. A torpedo can make a turn after slipping through the shield, though. That's why I am a bit disappointed in this design's practicality.
the thing also has Turbolaser batteries to exploit the openings
T kinda doubt there would be enough time for re-targeting. As said in the video the holes poked by the torpedo sphere lasts for mere seconds, other than shooting straight through that hole you practically don't have enough time to do much else. And holes are usually be poked at it's weaker points, which would highly unlikely be anywhere near it's generator
@@slimetank394 The torpedo sphere shoots a constant stream of torpedoes. As soon as the hole is made, more torpedoes are going to penetrate. That is MUCH faster than starting to shoot lasers right then. Lasers which given how the Torpedo Sphere works, cannot logically hit the generator.
@@arandomperson7713 All three objects would have to be in line for that to work. Given how it scans and finds the weakest point of a shield, the odds of that are like a billion to one. Besides, the torpedoes will get through the shield much faster than turbolasers.
In order for this strategy to work, the torpedoes must have some kind of guidance like the Cruise Missiles. You need them to be able to home in for shield generators on the surface of the planet and self-guide them under the planetary shield, once they poked in through the hole. Otherwise, as you said, there's little chance for it to be effective enough since there are very high probability chances these shield weak points are present somewhere in the middle of nowhere, like a desert, ocean etc.
In the Empire at War: Remake it's the best response to any Golan station(they are really good in this mod, Golan III tears 3 Allegiances to pieces) from outside of its range. Fun ship, awfully vulnerable to any form of concentrated fire.
I sent in 4 allegiance against it and they all got destroyed
@@Alex-ov5th My Allegiances(yes, I've modded the mod) had their reloads cut in half so effectively there were 6 of them
@@Firefocus-fz2we even with modding some of the files they still get destroyed even with 6 coming at it
@@Firefocus-fz2we I sent in like 8 isd2 bit faster I had there barbet turbolaser shoot a little bit faster and it kinds worked for me until the emey brought in there own fleet of bombers then I lost
@@Alex-ov5th You need to destroy their torps using bombers and then you are usually good to go. Or just go standard Siege approach Broadsides or TSSP
3:54 I see a few issues with your issues:
- planetary shields are not just one emitter. They are several emitters. You can not place sufficient Ground/Space weapons at _every_ generator to challenge a torpedo sphere. There will be a weak spot.
- if you as the defender shoot to early at the opening hole, you end up hitting your own shield. Just weakening it more. If you shoot to late, your weapons have probably already been hit as well
- I doubt that you can have a area shield protect a planetary shield generator while in operation. Put a area dome over a planetary generator, you just took out that planetary generator as surely as enemy actions. Remember Corouscants double shield? They had to have holes in the lower level, just to generate the upper level.
- If you drop the area shield to re-engage the planetary generator, that is a window. Just have a lowly ISD take over supressing that planetary shield generator and go for some other plantery generator with the Sphere
And that assumes the enemy can not just overpower your much weaker area shield
- Storytelling wise, a Torpedo Sphere is a Siege Tower. Or maybe ramps. It will give the enemy much easier access to beyond your walls (the planetary shield).
It is a highly specialized siege warfare tool. Something you sally out to destroy. Something the regular army has to protect.
I think we only have 3 examples of these ships dying in Legends. All three of them to ramming. Twice BY SSDs like Grunger's Aggressor at Tralus and another during the Imperial Mutiny. And another by the Black Ice from the WEG sources referenced in your last book.
Kind of a prime example of "Cool, but Impractical." With an upgrade to their sensors, I don't see why a handful of star destroyers couldn't replicate the requisite firepower needed to collapse a shield's weak point, and you could have multiple battlegroups target different points of the shield to up you chances of collapsing a single section. And it wouldn't require a purpose built vessel that gobbles up valuable resources - resources that, once spent, are completely unavailable if you're not in the specific situation where one of these things is required.
Probably because having one ship that can do all of that in your pocket is more convenient than diverting all the requisit fire power from your heaviest hitters in the fleet - proton torpedoes have insane damage values which is why you can penetrate shields using them by targetting a single point, something we arent shown turbolasers doing the same. Even if the turbolasers on the star destroyers could replicate the effect, thats several star destroyers that would be busy shooting at a shield instead of destroying enemy defenses since planetary shields are usually paired with powerful defenses rather than sitting on their own.
Its totally possible that you cant even replicate this effect with turbolasers - a turbolaser splash isnt the same as a proton warhead detonation
It’s much better to have a few specialized ships to preform specific roles, than upgrading one ship in a hole fleet to beable to handle every situation, it allows for greater flexibility at a cheaper cost. You’re never going to be able to upgrade a few star destroyers to replace the role of this ship it’d be a new class so either you’d practically upgrade all star destroyers with this ability which is overkill or build a new ship like the imperials did(you could argue for making closer to a star destroyers but I’d counter by saying typically the more niche a ship the better it serves a role)
If memory serves me right. The torpedo would explode and push the shield in just a bit....then another. And another till it was pushed way back so the turbolaser could knock out the generator
Honestly I think it needs to be said that the Empire's biggest weakness is actually their overreliance on the ISD. They wanted a ship that could do anything and weren't willing to utilize specialized craft all that much. The ISD is basically the textbook Star Wars example of the saying "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." It's extremely good at capital ship combat if you know how to properly utilize it, but it's abysmal at most other tasks and it generally feels like the Empire doesn't utilize it properly for its main purpose. The Torpedo Sphere, on the other hand, is designed for one purpose in mind and is *very* capable of that one role to the point of likely being a deadly anti-fleet weapon if the need arises. It's a single ship able to destabilize a planetary shield faster than an entire battle group of ISDs, which makes it more efficient overall and "safer" than risking the ISDs that are likely carrying your invasion force.

"You're here for the tasty noodles" Child of the Gentle West I am here for you to man up and do a video about how the Mon Calamari cruisers have no weapons! At both Endor and Scarif they do not fire a single shot, the Profundity embarrasses itself at Scarif, eating fire from Vader's flagship without popping off a single blaster bolt from its supposed "armaments".
THANK YOU
Mon calamari cruisers are repurposed pleasure/leisure cruisers, iirc so they don’t have weapons bc they weren’t built for that purpose
Edit: mom to mon
I think the in universe explanation might be something about range, as ISDs had higher quality gas and weapons, possibly allowing for longer ranges than the mon cals, who with their lower quality gas might not be able to reach them
At Endor you actually see them fire in a couple of scenes, best example is the scene where Ackbar says "Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer"

also to add to insult and injury thise ships didn't even have force fields and aftfacl gravity genrators on them. but the amor they had made the derrasteel and plasteel armor on those star disortyers look very prermitive. also sensor reading of the armor incated of a increadable form of foamed aulmulium ferrous alloy and diamond strength woven carbon nanotubes abrasive armor so durable and strong! its no wonder the star disroyers ion cannons and turbo laster didn't have barely a effect and in fact the 5000 ton drop ship that got blew up only just had barly borken apart in very large chncks from losing comtol after the torpido shprers full volley hit it. but it is still most in two large peaces and not only that the drop ship had allready been stripped down with only just its armor and non combat systems still left and all of its escape pods where already been fired. also theres just no cargo and anything in it bays. plus there just only a three days worth of fuel in its tanks. but sensor readings says it was acatly giong like 700+ kmh or 900+ mph at the time it was hit with those torpidos. also those drop ships are already docked into those warships and they soundly at a simear low graitvy aera in the sistem just sudden diapear in a glow by the time the rebel ships get there. then more gacltic empire fleet hyperwave trasmtion distress sigles from a empire strong hold 30 light years away signaled a distress message. then there was two week of slilase before yet more empire distress sigles stared agin. this keep repating off and on every two weeks.

I’ve always liked the torpedo sphere. As much as I like the triangle ships there’s just something about this thing that’s cool looking.

This doesn't make sense. The shield will be weakest furthest from the generator. If it can only open a hole for a few seconds, what good is it? Can a ship enter atmosphere in that time?

Torpedo sphere my favorite spherical ship be cause torpedoes are pretty amazing and this ship is based around them
It's evening where I'm at but new videos from you are always enjoyable.
The pocket death star aka the torpedo sphere would have been a better investment than the death star, as well as the tie defender, and the interdictor-class star destroyer.
Those torpedo spheres would have been more lethal if they were equipped with mass drivers (also known as MACs in Halo lore) alongside the torpedoes. Those MDs would've allowed more versatility in siege busting and serve as long distance sniping ships in fleet engagements.

Interesting tidbit… At the 7:22 mark, the literature states that each torpedo storage room was manned by 25 B-1 Worker Droids. Could these be reprogrammed, Clone Wars era Separatist battle droids? Would be a very uncharacteristically efficient use of resources by the Empire.
Says they were modified to handle torpedos, wouldn't surprise me
@josephmontanaro2350 That's basically the ideal role for B1s too. Menial work that would be dangerous to organics, and in a location where the crew may be called to fight. B1s aren't great at shooting, but they are better than an R2 unit or a forklift is. Theyd at least have a prayer of being useful if it was boarded

Thank you for this! I always read offhand references to the Torpedo Sphere growing up and was intrigued/curious about it, but I never knew the actual details or what source it came from.
What is it with Imperial factions and building giant balls of death?
Not sure we can thank George for that lol
The Last Command Sourcebook mentions about the Empire having an orbital siege platform above Qat Chrystac. It sent platoons of radiation troopers and fighters to the planet. Made me wonder if it was a modified Torpedo Sphere.
I know it's not star wars, but one concept for a ship i thought was pretty unique was from the Expeditionary Force saga. One of the top tier alien races, the Rindhalu assault a system owned by their peer species. they use a few automated ships to initiate the assault, but one of them stuck in my head.
a dedicated missile platform ship. Frigate sized, but it's only got a small space engine and a jump engine... and a whackton of missle tubes. It jumps in just ahead of the assault force, splits in half, and fires off 500 missiles all at once. 250 per side facing inwards, so when it jumps, it just opens like a book and saturates the battle space with missiles.
It made me realize we almost never see the "dumb box full of missiles" in scifi. This ship made me happy, but it's got the achilies heel of the empire. just 50% larger than it needed to be. if this ship was smaller, it could partake in fleet ops and actually have helped the empire a lot. being able to saturate a battle space with more missiles than enemy fighters would send a clear message
On a related note, what about the grudge match between Grand Admirals Gunger and Pitta. SSD vs Torpedo Sphere.
I always call those things "space JBLs"
Didn't Vader spec the Executor to break through planetary shields? We certainly know the Lusankya could force through a double shield from the inside - it did exactly that in its breakout from Coruscant.
I remember this ship... great video!
Such awesome videos on this channel! Big fan here!
your content and production quality are incredible!
If these are SO VERY ridiculously powerful wonder WHY the Empire worried an took steps against Rebel forces taking over even a small or Average Star Destroyer... Any small Rebel Force elite an Trained enough to take on the Crew and Legion of an Imperial Star Destroyer shoulda been sicked on one of THESE instead an have a HUGE game changer if they can succeed in capturing it.. as opposed as to successfully adding another battleship to your fleet even if you need one an it happens to be a Dreadnought...
UNLESS of course like about the majority of SDs the Emperor or Empire was so paranoid of such a thing ever happening these got them remote an manual self destructs built in too to keep any such scenario, in theory, from ever happening
Torpedo Spheres exist for one reason. They exist so players of the table top RPG from West End Games can blow up a doomsday weapon, but not break canon. They're Death Star stand-ins.
you should do a video about the EU Star Tours lore, both the company and things they introduced (3rd death star, etc) and how it changed over time with new canon.

The blockade runner in the background at the end is an example of one of the only super weapons the rebels had.
I can Imagine Grand Admiral Thrawn would’ve liked this ship a lot over the SSDs and Death Stars. Though crew intensive, Torpedo Spheres were quite powerful and small and always had a fleet for backup.
Nice to see some Gladiator-class star destroyers escorting a torpedo sphere in a few spots. I'm guessing those were mods in Galaxy At War?

Dr. Robotnik approves.
Very borg-ish in design, no noticeable bridge and a scattering of weapons, would really like more breakdowns of coreys in game models and stats, allways a good topic to let play in the background while gaming.
Those big-ass torpedo launchers kinda look like a shield deflectors you find on Federation starships in Star Trek.
Probably only 6 of these things in existence because it feels like proton torpedos became a pretty scarce resource where just getting 500 proton torpedos could give any logistics and supply chain officer an aneurism.

Idea that plays off many sci fi platforms. What if you put a shield around another ship. So that if they fired they would destroy the shield but they would have to suffer the damage. In essence, a ship would have two shields, one for the ship and one to surround another ship.
Grand Admiral literally annihilated the armada of Grand Admiral Grunger, thirty star destroyers, 60 strike cruisers and 100 carracks led by an Executor with a Torpedo sphere, the only thing that stopped his slaughter was Grunger ramming his torpedo sphere with the executor, killing them both.
The Torpedo sphere was meant to deal with planetary shields, but they could melt fleets like butter in the right hands.
Why don’t you cover the battle of Corellia where 2 grand admirals died.
Wouldn’t it make sense to dock several squadrons of fighters in the sphere, and launch them when hole was made in the shield? They they could fly into the atmosphere and take out the shield generator, or at least sever an easily reparable component to temporarily bring down the shield.
The New Canon successors, of a sort, to the Torpedo sphere were actually introduced in Star Wars Armada- a table-too fleet tactics game. It's called the Onager class Star Destroyer, and while it's not nearly as Death Star Superweapon as these monstrosities, it has a similar role, combined with being one of those long-range, main-weapon focused ships I know you wish Star Wars had more of.
first off I love the work you do, but can I ask about the video game video shots you show in your videos? what game / mod / expansion is it? it looks like empire at war gold expansion but I have seen so much more in your videos that I have not seen from those old games. can you tell me what they are please?
Seems like it would be a pretty easy weapon to defeat. Just redirect the intensity of the planetary shield to all regions within line of sight of the torpedo sphere.
Hmmm. Aside from my Beloved Eclipse Super Star Destroyer have you done a video on the Hapan Battle Dragons?
What do you use for the battles explained and fixed fleets videos?
3:30 question, if the opening only last a few seconds, and the weak points are usually away from the generator, how can it target the generator within those few seconds? Especially with turbolasers. Is the hole created large enough somehow for that?
Me:looks at title. Also me: yeah it’s called the Death Star.
Does anyone else think it looks suspiciously like a Yuuzhan Vong Slave Ship?
Could you take a look at the blue shadow virus from the first season of the clone wars? It was scene and told to be very deadly and at the time had no known cure
You should break down the 2nd battle of fondor
The torpedo sphere is more creative than the Xyston-class Star Destroyer.
Ironically it sounds like an Exegol Xyston is apparently the one sorta ship... Next to the Death Star or similar WMD... That can actually defeat one that doesn't involve a suicide team tactic
Hey Eck. You should do a video on wether or not the imperial fleet at endor could invade earth during horizon forbidden west
Which Imperial sourcebook are you referencing?
Do yo really need more than six torpedo spheres?
Me: Ummm yes???
Very cool!
What game is the footage? Thrawns revenge? Or homeworld 2 mod?
A Torpedo Sphere Vs A Vengance-Class Star Dreadnought. Which will win?
Answer: Neither, because the Vengance-class rams into the Torpedo Sphere, destroying both.
What about landos asteroid tug and the other stuff from that manufacturer?
The torpedo sphere seems to be more of a jobs program than a weapons platform due to how inefficiently the torpedoes were commanded.
