    The thing is in the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back the ion bolts actually did far more damage to the Tyrant than just disabling her power systems and sending the ship spinning out of control from a combination of the kinetic force of the bolts and misfiring engines. In the novel the attack caused heavy physical damage to the ship with multiple large explosions breaching the hull. But then that was before they decided that ion weapons in SW only disabled and didn't outright destroy like they do elsewhere.

    • @richardhicks5031
      @richardhicks5031 5 років тому +53

      That's because an ion bolt is basically plasma encasing heavy ionic energy based on the speed, of the bolt, the size of the bolt, and the max distance the bolt can reach the bolt should not only deactivate on board systems but RIP through the hull of most ships.

    • @VulpisFoxfire
      @VulpisFoxfire 5 років тому +23

      Well, it, was less damage from the ion bolt itself, as it was secondary effects on systems (and by malfuctioning systems) on a ship that size trying to maintain position in a gravity well to begin with.

    I only read like one of the books about the yuuzon vong, and I don't know exactly how ion the is suppose to work in the star wars universe, but it should still work on biological things. Maybe not as well, but also maybe better. Living things use electrical signals to do, well anything, and if ion the can disrupt electronics, it should be able to mess with a living things nervous system. But again, I know little about the yuuzon vong, and don't remember the specifics of ion tech, so could be very wrong.

      What's funny is an ion cannon like this one is impressive not only for its anti electronic warfare but based speed size and max distance of the bolt this thing should be tearing through hulls and giving out insta super cancer.
      Based on size of the bolt it has a impressive plasma payload and the speed at which it travels indicates I would have a heavy impact on the hull the plasma would then warp the hull and then the heavy ionized energy would wipe out the ships electronics while also delivering a very very large amount of ionized radiation to the ship probably more than the ships hull can normally handle and with multiple hits to the ship the second bolt would do more damage as the shield wouldn't weaken it like it did the first bolt

    Keep in mind that depending on the plantet size - one cannon will provide very small coverage - to cover a planet size of earth you would need at least 50 or so cannons - without including any co-firing coverage - and it would only get worse the bigger the planet is - there is also cost of not the guns alone - each gun would have to be protected from land attack - so each gun would have to be surrounded by a decent fortification + troops + their support = the cost grows exponentialy...

    I would like to point out that an ion cannon would indeed cause damage to bio-organic lifeforms. Our bodies have an electrical grid made up of neurons, so getting hit with a high enough charge from an ion cannon could potentially cripple a living creature for life. There may be other factors at play in specific situations, but it's an important factor not to forget about.

On that note, while time-consuming, it'd be nice if Lucasfilm/ Disney commissioned a new stats book that tries to reconcile a lot of the crazy numbers and figures we have in Star Wars with the actual lore (and logic in general lol). There's a lot of stuff to update or re-include for the new canon anyways.

    *Alliance Representative walks into KDY sales bureau
    KDY Sales Rep: Hello, how can I help you?
    RA Rep: Hi, We'd like to buy some counters to those Star Destroyers you sell to the Empire.
    KDY Sales Rep: Say no more, we got just the thing for you!
    THAT is how the Rebels got their V-150s. They just straight up bought them directly from KDY.

It would be a great orbital platform possibly but still. Come from the far side of the moon or planet then land shock troops so once again- one off.
    It would be ideal if it could be a network set up globally with no holes in the blockade. Then they have a shield that was similar to the death star to back it up. This planet or moon would basically be impenetrable. Yet, once again the invading force could merely wait you out because a frozen planet like Hoth wouldn't survive long without logistics from off world sources.

    I never understood why instead of one massive ion cannon for fleet defense they didnt have smaller versions to repel ground attacks. I mean what General got fired for that one? The planetary shield was able to defend against any planetary bombardment so why not employ better ground defense instead of this behemoth which is good for one thing only and that is protecting evacuation ships. Smaller ion cannons used for both planetary and ground defense would have been smarter. The rebels knew what types of ground attack they would face but had shit ground defenses. One smaller ion cannon would have wreaked havoc with AT-AT and AT-ST attackers considering the longer range of the ion cannons. By building multiple smaller versions their combined firepower would still be a large deterrent to fleets and would have been deadly to ground attacks. Such shortsightedness was almost the end of the rebels.

    • @SamCoulson

      I like this idea, if it can do precision targeting all the way into space, it ought to be able to hit a terrestrial target. There's just the issue of the ground topography. The film shows the ion cannon mounted in the base of a mountain so it has a limited field of fire.
      Older sources place the cannon in a different location than the shield generator, and didn't have a field of fire on it -- there's a map in the DK Locations book. The Empire would have been able to scan the base location from orbit and detect the energy signatures of the structures -- I think they had a good idea of what the base layout was and deployed their forces accordingly.
      Here's a good compilation of the different ground layouts of Echo Base:
      www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/158460-the-journey-back-to-echo-base/&do=findComment&comment=2916147
      However, newer sources place the ion cannon in a firing arc that could have attacked the advancing AT-ATs. While this is good for art & entertainment to place the iconic elements in the same shot, it changes the dynamics of the battle incredibly. If the shield is strong enough to hold off the orbiting fleet, and the ion cannon could have hit terrestrial targets advancing on the main power generator, then clearly the priority is to use the big cannon to blow up the big slow walkers advancing through an open field and keep that generator up. Once the ion cannon took out the ground forces then they can disable the space forces, and THEN safely evacuate. No casualties.
      If the ion cannon can protect the shield generator then the Empire should have used stealth and speed to their advantage. I'm imagining either a covert ops team placing explosives (which is exactly what the Rebels did at the shield generator on Endor) or a kamikaze swarm of speeders carrying warheads. We'll assume TIEs can't be used because they are too fast to fly through the shield and would have been easy pickings for the snowspeeders to be slowly moved through the shield perimeter and then launched.
      If the ion cannon could have hit the AT-ATs the battle would have gone completely different. I believe this is why the DK locations book puts the ion cannon on the other side of the mountain.

    I wonder if copious amounts proton torpedoes fired surface-to-air/space would be feasible and cheaper for planetary base defense? Can proton torpedoes be launched and guided to their target in such manner? From what we've seen they don't seem to be fully-autonomous, self-guided weapons capable of semi-independent operation like Star Trek's photon and quantum torpedoes. They can be launched from a ship, shuttle, space station, planetside or from defense satellites armed with them and once a target is acquired, relayed to the weapon, and launched, it will seek and home in on the target until it hits, destroyed, redirected by gravity, etc.
    Many real-life guided missile systems work similarly, most modern surface-to-air, anti-ship, air-to-air, air-to-surface, surface-to surface and underwater torpedoes all can or exclusively do work semi-independently of the launch platform once fired.

    is this intentional?: the optimal range of the gun is 4000 km but a geosynchronous orbit (at least on earth) is at roughly 36000 km height. Did Star Wars screw this up or did you forget a 0 for the range? Or is it normal to operate the gun with space stations outside its optimal range?
