The thing is in the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back the ion bolts actually did far more damage to the Tyrant than just disabling her power systems and sending the ship spinning out of control from a combination of the kinetic force of the bolts and misfiring engines. In the novel the attack caused heavy physical damage to the ship with multiple large explosions breaching the hull. But then that was before they decided that ion weapons in SW only disabled and didn't outright destroy like they do elsewhere.
That's because an ion bolt is basically plasma encasing heavy ionic energy based on the speed, of the bolt, the size of the bolt, and the max distance the bolt can reach the bolt should not only deactivate on board systems but RIP through the hull of most ships.

When it comes to super-weapons, this one is an under-appreciated great. Pound for pound and credit for credit, probably the best investment of any of them too, seeing how well it did against Vader's personal fleet.
What's funny is an ion cannon like this one is impressive not only for its anti electronic warfare but based speed size and max distance of the bolt this thing should be tearing through hulls and giving out insta super cancer. Based on size of the bolt it has a impressive plasma payload and the speed at which it travels indicates I would have a heavy impact on the hull the plasma would then warp the hull and then the heavy ionized energy would wipe out the ships electronics while also delivering a very very large amount of ionized radiation to the ship probably more than the ships hull can normally handle and with multiple hits to the ship the second bolt would do more damage as the shield wouldn't weaken it like it did the first bolt
The Ion Cannon is left intact in the Star Wars Marvel comic storyline. Wedge Antellies winds up MIA in the Ion Cannon fighting off Wampas. It was a cool Star Wars comic.

The Ion cannon is also in the old, but great game Star Wars:Rebellion. It is used mainly to allow you to get people off a blockaded planet from what I read. I guess it allows personel to leave without doing a skill check to see if they get captured.

Guess it cannot be pointed that low thanks to its enormous construction. They have to decide, It will be always low, or pointing into the sky... You got it.
I never understood why instead of one massive ion cannon for fleet defense they didnt have smaller versions to repel ground attacks. I mean what General got fired for that one? The planetary shield was able to defend against any planetary bombardment so why not employ better ground defense instead of this behemoth which is good for one thing only and that is protecting evacuation ships. Smaller ion cannons used for both planetary and ground defense would have been smarter. The rebels knew what types of ground attack they would face but had shit ground defenses. One smaller ion cannon would have wreaked havoc with AT-AT and AT-ST attackers considering the longer range of the ion cannons. By building multiple smaller versions their combined firepower would still be a large deterrent to fleets and would have been deadly to ground attacks. Such shortsightedness was almost the end of the rebels.
In Empire at War, there is a hidden stat bonus to the V-150 ion cannon. If you have at least one on the surface during a land battle, and you retreat, it automatically lowers the amount of units one would lose during said retreat.
Rebels: yo we got a planet defender Palpy: which one of my three planet destroy weapons should I use or shall I just use my entire fleet of world destroying ships?
I always loved this cannon. It is basically a giant F U to any ship trying to blockade. But a quick question though. Are you planning on doing other things beside Star Wars? Like continue the Halo vids, or things like Thunderbirds? if not, are projects like the major city on Manaan, or Tantooine a project for future videos?
One giant problem with the geosynchronous orbit idea is that at a range of 4000km this would only shoot to about one tenth the altitude of a geosynchronous orbit around an earth equivalent planet.
Be easy enough to get out of their range of fire to the left or right. So ya, it was pretty much a very, very expensive "one off" ground based weapon. It would be a great orbital platform possibly but still. Come from the far side of the moon or planet then land shock troops so once again- one off. It would be ideal if it could be a network set up globally with no holes in the blockade. Then they have a shield that was similar to the death star to back it up. This planet or moon would basically be impenetrable. Yet, once again the invading force could merely wait you out because a frozen planet like Hoth wouldn't survive long without logistics from off world sources.
an awesome weapon, It might not have done a lot of direct damage to a star destroyer. but it left it powerless in orbit and likely on crash course unless they could resort power quickly
I don't understand why an ion cannon would be ineffective against the Vong. Biological systems depend on electrical impulses to operate, and a massive ion burst should at least disrupt these signals for a while.
hoths diameter is about half that of Earth, so id say the distance is no more than 2x. although in saying that i would expect the shots to travel close to the speed of light (i know that blaster travel slower for many contradicting reasons), and at this speed an observer on the rebellion ship would see the shot travelling slower (than that of an observer on the shot) due to relativity
The Ion Cannon played a starring role in one of Marvel's Star Wars comics in a storyline in which Wedge Antilles and his gunner Jansen end up stranded on Hoth for several months. They shacked up in the Ion Cannon which the Empire never bothered to destroy, dismantle, or even deactivate.
having 2 of these cannon mount on 1 big capital flagship may be heavily modified Starhawk-class. I am sure these cannon can knock out the ship with the planet killer cannon, and send in all the commando and druid to take over the ship would not seem impossible now.
Hadnt thought about this before, but it should have still been effective against the vong. It scrambles electricals. That should also still apply to organics. Unless intercepted, it really should be like gods taser to organic craft/beings/systems....
Hold up, planetary shields are only 6M credits?! Elon, make it happen! Generation Tech calculated that 1 credit is about $1 so let’s make this happen!!
The thing only cost 1.5m at max but it could easily disable multiple ships that costs 150m each. I'd say that's one impressive return on investment. If it's paired with a similar system that does regular dmg like a sized up turbo laser cannon then you have a pretty good defense system for the cost involved.
5:52 17 out of 30 were destroyed??!!! Smh. They should have just had the rebel escort pilots destroyed that ISD's [5:53] bridge with their X-wing's proton torpedoes... The bridge of the ISD is the only place that controls (I think) all of the guns on the ISD so destroying the bridge would have helped. And, there's no secondary command bridge on the ISDs either.
Your math on the speed of those ion shots could've probably been easier. If you have the size of that canon, you can just use the footage of it firing to measure the distance it covers in that short period of time and get the velocity. guessing the distance to the destroyer seems really iffy. Hoth is much smaller than earth, so comparing an image the way you did is going to make it horribly inacurrate.
In the radio drama leia told the pilots she was telling the plan to was that for the last transport they would set the cannon to fire on auto and run -which was the one she was getting out on, so i think its possible both that and the one you mention are true that the gun crew couldn't get to the transport so kept firing till the last moment when they set it to overload.
The thing is in the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back the ion bolts actually did far more damage to the Tyrant than just disabling her power systems and sending the ship spinning out of control from a combination of the kinetic force of the bolts and misfiring engines.
Geostationary orbit for Earth-sized planets is about 36,000 kilometers above the equator, putting it well beyond the optimal range for that thing.
So was it worth the credits?
Well we didn't exactly buy it...
This thing is powered by gonk droids. I love it.
*Guy who designed it back in 1980* : I just made it look like a boob, but this is cool, I guess...
*Ion cannon: exists?*
*Death Star: hold my blaster*
Prediction: Maybe it was already there?
How convenient
My favorite Star Wars heavy artillery.
Rebels: yo we got a planet defender
Palpy: which one of my three planet destroy weapons should I use or shall I just use my entire fleet of world destroying ships?
I always loved this cannon. It is basically a giant F U to any ship trying to blockade.
But a quick question though. Are you planning on doing other things beside Star Wars? Like continue the Halo vids, or things like Thunderbirds?
if not, are projects like the major city on Manaan, or Tantooine a project for future videos?
One giant problem with the geosynchronous orbit idea is that at a range of 4000km this would only shoot to about one tenth the altitude of a geosynchronous orbit around an earth equivalent planet.
Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever been THIS early. It’s like that time I screamed It’s a trap!! before the quote was coined.
500K to 1.5 mil credits for an Ion Cannon?
That would be pretty useful for disabling warships so that they are much easier to capture.
The cannon is 1.5 mil and a star destroyer is 150 mil wouldn't just making 100 of those be cheaper than one star destroyer?
Yeah that is really silly to me especially when you consider how powerful it would be on a star destroyer
How it compares to turbolasers?
The universe sandbox part was a chef kiss
an awesome weapon, It might not have done a lot of direct damage to a star destroyer. but it left it powerless in orbit and likely on crash course unless they could resort power quickly
I don't understand why an ion cannon would be ineffective against the Vong. Biological systems depend on electrical impulses to operate, and a massive ion burst should at least disrupt these signals for a while.
Ion cannons are so op and cool
Not enough to defend Hoth tho
I love your video keep up good work
Thanks I'll keep em coming
OK :)
If only school were this cool
Further proof the Gonk Droid is the real hero of star wars.
So the Ion Cannon had an exterior made from " Permacite " the galaxies toughest material....was the Shield Generator made of Permacite ?
hoths diameter is about half that of Earth, so id say the distance is no more than 2x.
although in saying that i would expect the shots to travel close to the speed of light (i know that blaster travel slower for many contradicting reasons), and at this speed an observer on the rebellion ship would see the shot travelling slower (than that of an observer on the shot) due to relativity
that "bungeecord it" just killed me!!! xD, great video!!!!!
a super transport? what type of ship would something like that be? maybe something around the size of an acclamator or something.

"Rebellions take guts, resourcefulness, and alarmingly powerful surface-to-orbit defense systems."
In cannon the one in echo base was left intact but when they when back to get it the internals were destroyed. The source is The Rebel Files.
having 2 of these cannon mount on 1 big capital flagship may be heavily modified Starhawk-class. I am sure these cannon can knock out the ship with the planet killer cannon, and send in all the commando and druid to take over the ship would not seem impossible now.
Its also in “Star Wars: Rebellion” (PC). LNR maybe?
Hadnt thought about this before, but it should have still been effective against the vong. It scrambles electricals. That should also still apply to organics. Unless intercepted, it really should be like gods taser to organic craft/beings/systems....
I was listening to this while building my lego tie, and i hear double tap and get confused for a second
Two taps and Honey will save you hundreds of dollars...
Hold up, planetary shields are only 6M credits?! Elon, make it happen! Generation Tech calculated that 1 credit is about $1 so let’s make this happen!!
I was wondering why the Ion Cannon in Rebel Strike was mounted on such a tall base. I had no idea it was based off the concept art
Do a video on the droids that jar jar and mace fought to save the queen
There are a ton of ion cannons in star wars Elite squadron
And in renegade squadron it has a cameo during the evacuation of hoth
I love the SpaceX reference! 😎
When swollen, it fires a quantum lacto-ion blast or a steady stream...
Another great video as always!!!
Another Awesome video!!
The snow boob! lol
👍☯️👍
Holy Cow! What have I just stumbled on to?
The nerdiest part of the internet. Welcome lol
Meta is so modest. You stumbled onto the *BEST channel for all things Star Wars* As Yoda never said _"Happy you'll be if, Subscribe you Do."_
They ordered it on amazon.
Once again the Gonk droids have proven to be one of the best characters in Star Wars.
V-150: *costs 1.5 million credits*
You (paraphrased): that’s expensive
SWTOR player: hold my beer
