This song was released in January 1990. But it definitely has an 80s feel to it.

You can NEVER listen to it once. On repeat! Daaaaaamn

Jane Child, released in 1989, was fully written, produced, and performed on the synthesizer (except for the guitar parts) by Child herself, a rarity for a debut artist signed to a major label. Due to her musical style and her emphasis on control over her music, she was at the time labeled by the press as "the female Prince". Best known for the hit single "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990.
The song was also a big hit on the R&B chart, peaking at No. 6, a rarity for a white artist.
thanks for this info
GOOD shit!
This song crossed over and how!
I heard that Teddy Riley produced this song. Makes sense because it definitely has a New Jack Swing type of feel.

I first came to live in NYC 3 years after this came out. The city was pretty much the same as it was in this video. Times Square was seedy, the Meatpacking district had a lively underground, and the Twin Towers stood tall. Can't help but feel nostalgic listening to these beats and watching the cityscape of that era. 🌆🎶🗽
It’s weird how you can hear a song 10 times a day everyday for months and then not hear that song again for almost 30 years. I had almost forgotten about this song.

Back then when you went for a look...you committed fully. Definitely an artist 😎✌️
And this was how actually she looked. This wasn’t some pre-fabricated thing.
Truth
I saw her some years later with a more mainstream “normal” hairstyle and without the chained piercings and realized what a good looking woman she was.
She was actually very beautiful.
Daughter
She really was. At the time, Jane Child was considered hugely avant-garde. Her nose ring is-it-real-or-clip-on was a big debate in high school! But being considered avant-garde myself then (big time!) I admired her. I wonder why she did not become a bigger star. Perhaps she was ahead of her time.
the eraser head haircut was a bit funny even for the time

There was something truly magical about the 80's music scene....

Three glorious weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1990, two of those weeks under another alternative singer, Sinéad O'Connor. Even if the style of "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" seemed to be in line with the moment, Jane Child herself was unknown. The entire eponymous album this comes from has bangers on it ("I Got News for You" is especially good), all so fervently controlled by Child herself. She understood funk, rock, melody, and rhythm. Such a great moment not just for Jane Child, but for those of us enjoying this on the radio. Ain't no personal thing, boy.
This music is still one of the most satisfactory things to my ears. If we aren't blaring a bass and drums like that with that sexy af synth & guitar performance, I don't want it.

Happy 50th Birthday Jane Child 🎂
Ok
Jane Child. Most UNDERRATED GENIUS back then. She was wayyyy ahead of her time! Inspiring.
Dirk Devin lmao she only had a couple songs ....
Darren Davenport His point is she was ahead of her time, hence why she only had a few. Her looks, style and voice weren't the "popular mainstream" cookie cutter music even back then.
Dirk Devin Dirk something I learned a long time ago in reference to artist like Jimi Hendrix Bob Marley and Jim Morrison.no one is ahead of their time there right where they're supposed to be it's the people around them that don't understand or accept but they were here and did what they were supposed to do keep loving the music brother
Dirk Devin yes
she didn't make it because she didn't, just didn't have it together past this song. one of the most energetic, most pure soul with the right mix of pop added and she came up with this. she was truly a one hit wonder...

Great voice i think being Canadian had a lot to do with it. Still enjoy hearing this song something about it just grabs me and she was rocking a leaf jersey.
She was very anti mainstream. Refused to do massive shows like top of the pops and just rebelled. Of course the industry doesn't like that. Agreed tho she's a huge talent
So much Canadian talent ends up not seeing the light of day... it sucks!
The 80s music was awesome.
Magical 🎉
Her vibe is immaculate

Sid Brown that was real music back down in the day today's music ain't worth a crap and I wouldn't even waste my time listening to it
she didn't make it because she didn't, just didn't have it together past this song. one of the most energetic, most pure soul with the right mix of pop added and she came up with this. she was truly a one hit wonder...
I remember hearing this song as a kid back in the early 90s. Around 5 years ago I heard it again on Spotify. Remind me of going into New York City with family during this era. Good times.
Being a music producer in the late 80s and exactly the same age as Jane, I can recall certain technical aspects of this really great song.
I cannot be sure of everything, but I'll give my best guess here, and I also will base my assertions on a article I found on Jane Child's website.
The keyboard used in the video is a Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) v3, a very well-known Australian sampler that defined the sound of the era (Peter Gabriel, Trevor Horn, Kate Bush, etc.). Very pricey back then (over $100,000 inflation-adjusted), the technology it used can now easily be emulated with any mid-range smartphone!
The drums are sampled and sequenced by the Fairlight, and may be from original sounds produced by Jane herself, which sets her apart from contemporary productions that often used the Linn Drum machine LM1 or 2 at that time. "Gated" reverb (popularized by Phil Collins) was heavily used both on the kick and snare drums, which makes the sound "bigger" but also makes it sound "typically" from the 80's.
For the marvelous synth bass line, I can't be sure, but at least 2 sounds are stacked, possibly a Casio (!) or maybe a DX7 and an analog synth (Moog?).
The drums and bass are doing 90% of the work in these amazing tracks. The bass is very melodic, very funk-oriented, and the syncopation makes you want to dance.
The "brassy" sound is typical of an analog poly synth: a sawtooth waveform with a cut-off filter fully opened, similar to "Jump" (Van Halen), but maybe stacked with several synths to obtain that very rich sound that supports the song.
The high-pitched "bell" sound played on each beat might be a Fairlight sample or a DX7 (which was really good for this type of metallic sound).
A funky guitar is present but not always easily heard; it perfectly blends in and adds a great groove to the entire edifice.
Finally, the solo lead relies on a "sync lead" sound (Synchronized oscillators) which was easily recognizable and found on high-end analog synths. The sync lead is great when it is played with pitch-bend and modulation (played by Jane's left hand, which cannot be seen in the video) and is essentially a synth equivalent of a distorted guitar solo sound.
Jane's voice is very distinguishable and blends perfectly.
The mix itself is just great; while the song is really "full", the usage of stereo space as well as the overall dynamic is perfect. You can focus on each instrument while hearing the whole "package". Limiters & compressors might have also been cleverly used to achieve that 'big sound' that fills the entire available dynamic range!
This song reminds me of Scritti Politti's "Perfect Way"; these songs were really the benchmark to which "serious" 80's producers would refer in terms of musicality, technicality, rhythm, etc. This was the state of the art of (synth) pop music!
A phenomenal analysis and a delight to read. Thank you.
Wow that was amazing man! I hope you're still in music production on some level if for nothing else than to pass on your knowledge!
According to an interview, she used a Casio CZ-1000 for bass parts (somewhat surprising!), Prophet 2000 & VS, Minimoog, and Roland D-50 on the record in addition to the stuff you listed. I'd guess there's some Juno in there too. She plays a Fairlight in the video but that's not what she used for the solo.
I view this 89 song (in my own personal opinion) as the last "hurrah" of the iconic 80s synth sound. Many people dismiss this song as just a wacky pop one hit wonder song but The synth work on this song and other songs like Pebbles, "Mercedes Boy", are done so well that I never get tired of listening to any of them. In fact, Jane Child's 1st album where this song is a part of has amazing synth playing and sounds that were iconic 80s sounds. She was a very talented and underated artist. 👍
this song reminds me of phil collins- easy lover
@@7.0SLO Interestimg. Cool that you brought up the song, Easy Lover. That was one hell of a song from the 80's. Can't go wrong with Phil Collins fron Genius, and Phil Bailey from Earth, Wind and Fire. Takes me back to the days of Miami Vice. 🤓👍
Miss the 80's :(
So true.
Well, since there is no year 0 in the Gregorian calendar... Okay, I'll shut up now.
