A very rare live performance of Jane Child and sadly she had a very sore throat as she explained in the previous interview segment. She can still wail with that voice. She did the Tina Turner cover of "We Don't Need Another Hero" after this was televised. She has a very powerful voice and her musicianship and compositional skills are just jaw dropping.
@@totigerus Yep. She was the anti-Pop star. She never wanted to play by the rules. She was a real artist in a time where cookie cutter was beginning to rule the day. Had she come out even five years earlier, she likely would have been a bigger deal.

***** You may be right. But l suspect that she and the band played the song in a lower register to allow him to harmonize with her. Then again, someone up there mentioned her sore throat. They played it here in the key of GM4. The original is in Fm5. I'm sure she still has no problem hitting the high notes and singing in that higher register when healthy.
There are many songs which stand the test of time & many of them comes from very talented artists & Jane, you are truly one of them, you play keyboards the way they are meant to be played & you look absolutely wonderful & greetings all the way from Australia.

@@valetastarks437 You definitely know your stuff, I couldn't have described it all better myself; Jane wrote an absolutely killer tune, but she is certainly NOT a polished vocalist - you can even hear it on the original studio version of Don't Wanna Fall in Love; her voice doesn't project that well and she sounds nasal and a bit flat at times.
Considering how produced the radio-play version was, I honestly didn't think this live version would be that recognizable. But when Jane started on the grand piano, pounding out those chords flawlessly, and the band joined in, I realized she's the real deal.
I'm a big fan of Jane both because of her talent compared to all the other artists who only sang words while Jane did everything, and because she is so good looking that I could accept all the unusual, ahead of her time fashion and hairstyles. It's amazing that I thought it was a good touch to put the nose chain on King Xerxes in the movie 300 but I hadn't seen it since she wore it like 20 years earlier. I got the pleasure of being her bus boy around 1992 in Monterey and could barely speak but I managed to stutter how much of a fan I was and she was probably scared but was smiling and nice. About 4 years later I got to be slightly famous myself and meeting her helped me get over my paralyzing shyness. So I'll always be grateful to her for not making me feel beneath her which could've kept me from having enough confidence become a model. Even if I hadn't met her I would've respected her more than all the other artists. I wish she had more success than them too because she deserved it.
My name is Joe Evett and I am from Boise, Idaho. I was wondering why Jane was not belting this out. I read she was recovering from a sore throat 😔. I only discovered that Jane did a couple of albums after her 1989 debut (which I have been rolling regularly since late 90's and am bananas about). Imagine my joy at listening to HERE NOT THERE for first time ever last night. Truly marvelous, amazing album, Jane! Thank you for keeping me company with your music for so long and making me a better person for it. Looking forward to spinning SURGE very soon.
No, she absolutely can't. This is down about two steps and she's all over the place vocally. She's a great writer, producer, and player but she isn't now and never has been a good singer. Her voice was always purely a studio creation - doubled and tripled to cloak the fact that she's not a singer. Had Autotune existed back then, she'd likely have used it. The tune is absolutely off the chain and she knew how to produce herself so that her voice would sound good.

But in my opinion Teena's voice wasn't as appealing because she had too much vibrato for my taste...kinda like Patty Labelle.
