I think she could've been the female version of Prince with better promotion. Her label gave up on her and that was still important around this time. She did everything herself and did it brilliantly.

Y'all young bucks making me feel real old right now, sleepin' on Jane Child! This woman was PHENOMENAL, from the moment the debut album dropped in `89, and watching her blow up in `90/`91 with Don't Wanna Fall in Love and Welcome to the Real World. IDWTFIL capitalized on the New Jack Swing beat that was popular of the time. She wrote, produced, and played EVERYTHING you hear, and was once likened as the "female Prince". I really loved the entire self-titled debut album and the esoteric 1993 followup, Here Not There - despite the fact critics gave her NO LOVE for the latter. She was way ahead of her time, and badly missed these days...

Redneck Mullet - "I was a huge part of 80s style."
Jane Child Mullet - "Hold my beer."
Gotta hand it to Jane Child. Every other person in 2022 has their nose pierced. But in 1989, Jane was one of the trailblazers. Plus, bonus points for the chain connected to her earring. Just, Jane, don't play basketball or stand too close to the subway with that in.

I can kind of see where you You might think this is 190s song but music from 90 to like 93 especially pop and hip hop still had a very new swing80s style to ITIT really did not change other than grunge until About 1994 or 1995 (And of course the 80s style pop and R&B and hip hop music did not change it's production style or sound until about 92 or 93 with more obscure artist still going into the midnight 90s even though most sounded modern you could still find a lot of hair bands until around 1994 and even into 1995) But as far as pop music new jack swing had been around since 1986 or 87 and that kind of Electro Hip hop style new Jack swing Really didn't fall out of popularity until the mid 90Really didn't fall out of popularity until the mid 90s when we had more of the smooth RB from people like R. Kelly Mario And Later boys to men I can't think of any of the others I can't think about any of the othersothers, So for the most part most pop and hip hop from 8788 and 89 sounded like music from 1,990-1,993 scene production style Similar vocal styles and heavy on the keyboards and electric guitars.

The 12" (extended version) had a lot of the beats and riffs that were left on the cutting room floor when she edited the single. It has surprised me that a lot of the bass and percussion solos haven't been sampled by other artists, they are that good.

I think this came out in 1990 but its definitely got the 1987-1989 sound, ie synthy, crisp pop, cool melodies, she has a great voice and love her originality. She had 1 more really good hit from the same era.

Love this song! Another female artist I’m hoping you’ll check out is Joss Stone. She’s into Soul and R&B and has an insanely good voice with Janice Joplin vibes. Her songs/covers of Son of a Preacher Man, It’s a Man’s World and Piece of my Heart are great ones to start with.

I'm not being malicious about it when I do this and I'm glad you understood that I was just being helpful. Some people take it the wrong way. That's why I always try to put a smiley face with my post to let the person know I'm being friendly about it and not rude. Yeah, if you'd like for Jay and Amber to play some Joss Stone on Female Friday, I believe they're more likely to see your requests if you post them on their instagram or twitter account. This is a great song. It came out in the spring of 1990. Another great female artist that was popular around this time was Lisa Stansfield. She had an amazing voice and her biggest hit "All Around The World" would be great to react to.

Glad to see y'all do a reaction for this. She wrote, performed, produced, and played most of the instruments on this little ditty. Too bad she was a one-hit wonder. When released in January 1990, it spent 3 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. A remix of the song was produced by Teddy Riley and reached #6 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart.
