Pronouncing it as "Vib-ro-mate" instead od "Vibe-ro-mate" sounds better. "Vibe-ro-mate" sounds like a 1950's marital aid... 🤣

You got to be careful here man you don't want to give your secret to everybody you might hurt your own personal business. It could be like a firecracker going off in your hand. It's nice to tell people about it, but people might start snatching them up before even you can get to them?

I have a 2003 Les Paul Classic, so I was excited at first when I thought you would cover this guitar, but then it was short lived when I saw it was the Classic “rock” version. I’d like to know the value and your opinion of these guitars.

I ran into an old elementary school friend about 20 years ago. He was and is a hell of a nice guy, following rant will explain. We are hanging out, havent seen each other in years, having a beer or 2 and catching up. When I tell him I play guitar he says, " check this out. Give it a spin". His father had died and left him a Gibson es semi hollow, with a vintage fender amp. As I lit up playing it, and kept telling him how awesome his gear is he says " geeze man, I would really like to give this to you, but my dad left it to me..." What!? Stop! Do not give this to anyone, you have an absolute special find with the guitar and amp. Some people have no idea the nature of their items . That old Gibson was not only expensive and collectible, but had huge sentimental value. And the guy still wanted to give it to me. I hope he still has it.

I had the pickguard on a '97 Limited Edition Les Paul Jr TVDC do the off-gassing thing about three years after I bought it.
A what? They were a Japanese market special run with historic specs and a faux tortoiseshell pickguard. The guard on mine went weird and oily in a "I don't remember it looking like that a few months ago" way. I changed the strings on it and put it on a stand, then went on vacation for a week. When I got back the off-gassing had corroded the strings so much that the E & B had snapped.
Suffice it to say that the guitar has had a back guard made by a local repair guy on it for the last fifteen years.
My other off-gassing horror story concerns a mid 90's CIJ Jazzmaster in Fotoflame. I case queened it for about a year and "something" off-gassed, resulting in the pickup covers and whammy bar tip getting very yellowed, and all the finish on the guitar had started to crack up and peel off. The thing has looked like it has a nasty skin disease ever since, and like my other 90's Fotoflame Fender is in serious need of a re-finish.

My cousins have a band and their lead guitarist had one of the Rock Les Paul's, and you were right, it looks just like a kitchen counter top. His was the white/light grey/dark grey swirl, like it's supposed to be quartz granite or something. I had never heard of them and at first I thought it was some Chibson import fake. Nope. He turned it for about $3k and I was stunned. He ended up buying a Helix with it and some cash left over. The build quality was very poor and he was the first/original owner, so nothing had been done to it.

These videos are interesting to me cause I have never been a Gibson fan and never understood peoples obsession for Gibson. After watching many of Trogly's videos I still don't get it. The Norlin era, they seem to try anything they could to build the guitars cheap and in the last 30 years the only thing to justify the high prices is the name Gibson. They also have the worst aging finishes of any guitar company. Don't get me wrong. they do make good guitars but no better than any other top tier guitar brands and in my opinion not as good as some. I guess it just comes down to tradition why people love the old brands like Gibson and Fender.

You are 100% correct sir. It pains me that they do some awesome paint jobs like the swirl les paul in this video, or any really nice burst with a flame top and cover it all with a crappy nitro finnish. It should not be used in anything ever if you want it to stay pristine. I get it if someone wants their guitar to relic faster then sure yeah. You don't see the finnish crapping out on even the cheapest guitars like they do on Gibsons.

I just had a good week on Reverb... Thursday night I picked up a beautiful 2011 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded with active EMG 81/85 for less than $600 + shipping. And tonight snagged a vintage Marshall Valvestate VS100RH head for $200 shipped offer, and it only needs an input jack replaced (supposedly...We'll see once it gets here).
I know, I know... Folks hate on the Valvestates because they're hybrid amps, but for an iconic 90's heavy metal/hard rock sound, the Marshall 8100/VS100RH heads are right up there with the Peavey 5150 tube heads. Wayne Static (Static-X) almost exclusively used the Marshall 8100/VS100 heads. So did TONS of other famous bands of the 90's. Plus, for nostalgia, my first "real" amp was a new in '95 Valvestate VS100R 1x12 combo. Still have it. Still sounds amazing. And I bet this new VS100RH will sound amazing through my Blackstar S1 412 Pro cab w/ custom-voiced Celestion V30's. 👍🏻

@@12south31 Yeah, I got my first Valvestate VS100R 1x12 combo back in '97 or so, when I was a kid. Still got that amp, and it's in mint condition. So, I have a bit of a sentimental connection to the Valvestate amps. Plus, most haters are people who have never used one, or have no idea how to dial one in. Once you get it dialed in, it's probably the nicest sounding solid-state amp you've ever heard, thanks to that single 12ax7 preamp tube. Swapping out the original Marshall tube for a high-quality Tung-Sol, Genelax, or Mullard makes a difference, too. 🤘🏻

I owned a dot neck Les Paul back in the 80s when I could hardly play. It was a beautiful red kind of a sparkly finish. There was no designated name on it and it came in a Chain saw case. I traded it for something else. It was I think earlier then 85.

The ABR-1 on the '50s Black Beauty is a no-wire one ... easily worth over $1,000 by itself in even in okay condition (not bent!) BUT the saddles were very likely replaced (you can tell because of the beveled screws, on '50s ones the screws didn't have bevels but by the early '60s they added them to prevent strings from contacting them. Plus the saddles were sharp as knives, I once found one that was new old stock and the saddles weren't any sharper than that so for a guitar with as much playwear as this, that seems "off". That's what's tricky about these really old guitars, I only know this tiny detail because I researched it heavily (because I owned one) and every part on a guitar of this vintage guitar also can be dated by minute detail that most people won't know about. And it does effect value if parts are not right, even parts of parts, so be careful.

Just a little side note regarding the LP Gothic with a chip in the finish, as Austin said it can indeed be fixed, a mate of mine has a Fender that its neck finish cracked all along the skunk stripe from the truss rod being over tightened. Structural issues aside, it was VERY uncomfortable to play. He took it to my luthier of trust and it was all glued up and sanded smooth, even without having to refill the crack with finish, it became imperceptible - the key here is leaving something as delicate as the finish to someone who knows their craft.

Austin: Thanks for discussing the ES Artist pickguard. I have a 1980 model and love the thing but that guard had to go; all was good until about two years ago when I found the pups turning green. I took the guard off, removed it's metal parts and stored them separately in baggies and fortunately the guitar finish polished up ok. Do you have any idea why this specific pickguard is so bad? It's such a fancy thing compared to the ones on my other Gibsons; beautiful to look at and with binding too, but useless.
One more watch-out for these guitars is that the black foam rubber, used to protect the circuit board from the 9V battery, disintegrates at around 35 years +/-. Mine was just fine one year and then when I changed the battery the following year, the cavity was full of black powder. I just carefully vacuumed it out and there is now a piece of soft cloth doing the job. The guitar is exceptionally well made and plays really well. The Moog electronics are a little odd and really superfluous but do produce some really interesting tones.
