📚 Description: Sometimes surfing Reverb all-day everyday pays off. After 3 years, I found my stolen Flying V - one of many guitars that have been missing/stolen by the hands of someone claiming to be a Luthier and doing restoration/repair work.
When I first started getting into he guitar business - I got burnt back to back and had to go back to square one just shortly after getting a mortgage on my first house. Luckily, I've never been afraid of hardwork so by working between 3-6 jobs at a time, I was able to rebuild and get to where I am today.
This is the story of how I lost a whole collection of project guitars including this flying V.

I would be telling the "Luthier" you WILL be meeting the guy from your state to give him my guitars.People are lucky there are people like you because he would be having more health problems over that kind of money.I'm no tuff guy but that's alot of money.Love your show.

I’ve been too blue to check it out, but I guess I’ll pore over your site (after I find it) and see whether you offer a service to keep an eye open for other people’s stolen guitars? The problem being I haven’t found a single photo of my boosted SG, and it was stolen over a decade ago… if it hasn’t been re-fitted by now to look like it’d never been modified in the first place, if the pickup covers haven’t been replaced and so on, I’d be shocked. I guess it’d also be awesome if someone could help me ID, from a written description, what year my stolen SG may’ve been from… and maybe even help me find an affordable player-grade replacement? You seem so busy, though: probably UA-cam alone is a full-time gig. 😕

Stop. Giving. This. Guy. Any. More. Chances. Typical scammer behavior, just ask for all your guitars back or threaten lawsuits and police action. It's insane that he still has them. And now with the flying v being sold, if he has anymore of yours left time is of the essence to get them back before they're sold too.

@@ryans9029 Just doing this video worked against him by showing the guy that is stealing his guitars that he is weak and does not understand how to act and get his stuff back or have that asshole arrested. He seems to dismiss his guitars in this video like the guy who stole them already won. I don't get it considering he has all the guys info and all those emails for proof. He shoulda made this video as a scare tactic and spoke harsh against this guy to scare him into giving back his guitars!
Not everyone is comfortable with conflict. He’s handling it in his own way. Hopefully some local subs can steer this guy in the right direction. I’d get 3 or 4 buddies and show up heavy for him if I lived close by, but that’s obviously not his style. Sounds like this luthier is a punk.

Simple as that. He doesn't have to be the conflict or tough type to stand up and get his thousands of dollars in guitars back from a thief or scam artist.

I work on fraud cases and with victims. My business recovers property for victims that have their property in possession of someone who does not own it. Possession is not ownership.
We do not use violence, we press charges and take actions under court ordered judgments. This includes all costs: legal, investigative, and, if cash, interest... we are not a collection agency, we are victims advocates who believe each time a con walks successfully away from a PLANNED/DELIBERATE criminal action, everyone suffers... and BTW, why aren't you insured?
If you continue to give this con time, hoping there is some honesty here, you will run out of time with statutes that allow you to press charges in civil courts. If you have passed statute limits, you can plead equitable tolling: that you did not perceive any crime until recently, especially if you can prove some level of diligence... SUE HIM NOW!!! Press charges asap in civil court, let law enforcement know what is happening, especially if this is crossing state lines... the size of this crime warrants action, how many other victims do you think this guy has screwed? Time for answers... its up to each of us to keep the sandbox clean.
If you look at the comment Megaman X made, further up the page, it seems this "luthier" is involved with smuggling of endangered species from Belize. And Trogly is aware of that. That's why he's not getting the law involved.

This is what happens when you have more money than sense.
Except you have to have some sense to get “more money” in the first place. Often there are calculated risks to get money, you have to be prepared to take losses and learn from them. As they say success is often achieved at the cost of many failures. In the process you also gain resilience and objectivity, that’s make you a happier more balanced individual. A life lived!
@@michaeldahm214 A calculated risk would be to send 1 guitar to said stranger, then evaluate the quality of work upon return. If the work is good and the person is reliable, send over the other guitars.

Jordan I don’t disagree. It is a mistake to send a bunch of guitars to some “random guy”. The “living your life” bit referred to the willingness to accept your mistake without losing it and becoming overwhelmed with negativity and making your self totally miserable. That is a good way to get ventilated. Better to retain a lawyer, prove to the county court that said individual is in obsessional of your personal property and allow the sheriff or police to recover that property with a warrant. Unless the guy is insane, everything will be settled out of court and in a decent fashion.

@@devilsoffspring5519 Yeah, it's unfortunate but the police probably won't get involved unless you know someone, and they would probably advise you to sue the guy since you have contracts for the work and proof. So then the guy will just ignore the resulting civil suit and you're out the lawyers fee and time spend pursuing a civil case that the police will also then decline to enforce.

There is no excuse for that guy to go ***months*** without contacting you while possessing tens of thousands of dollars worth of your property. Period. Just disgusting that he'd do that and then try to play this sickness card. If he truly has some bizarre illness that apparently he isn't allowed to let you in on then that might prevent work on the guitars, but there's no way it would make him unable to type a quick text message. I would have gotten police involved already at this point, as he clearly (to me) hoped you wouldn't notice this little stunt.

There isn't even any consistency in the lies he is being told. I'm unclear why his friend had the guitars and if he was or was not trying to sell them on his behalf. It doesn't make sense anyway you don't sell someones property to try to recoup some of the money, surely you just return their property and apologise?

I know everyone's been saying this already, but definitely get police involved and try to get your guitars back NOW. This whole hospital story just sounds like BS to buy him time to cover his tracks as he sells your guitars.
Something doesn't add up here. You have $16,000 in merchandise probably stolen from you and you don't seem interested in calling the police. Yet you're all goofy and giddy about finding one of your stolen guitars for sale online. That's a very curious attitude. One is left to wonder why you don't want the police involved. I had my home broken into and lost some of my gear. Good thing I made a three-ring binder that had pictures, serial numbers and receipts of all my guitars, amps, multitrack recorder, stompboxes, mics, etc. The police called me back a few days later after I gave them my notebook from reporting the break-in. They located most of my gear and wanted to pick me up to identify it.
You should have seen the manager of the pawnshop face as he turned over my property. Oh, he was clearly upset that he lost money. Probably because either he or one of his employees were incompetent for buying my gear from the thief. They didn't 'have' a copy of the thief's I.D/Licences when the bought my gear. So they ended up being the ones out of money and no gear.
The kicker is the pawnshop was right in my neighborhood, only a quarter-mile from my house. I've gone in that pawnshop from time to time to see if they have any gear worth buying. So imagine what my surprise would have been if I never kept a record of my gear, walked in the shop and saw my guitars hanging on the walls, and couldn't do a damn thing to get them back without proof of ownership.
@123645445 I believe it is a federal law for pawn shops to take I.D.s. They are definitely fences of stolen property and the A.G. / District Attorney should be coming down on them.
@Comrade Kong We are both strangers to one another therefore, not entitled to believe what a stranger has posted. But I'll say this, just because businesses share the same common laws to operate from state to state, doesn't mean best practices is always 'practiced'. People will always find ways to circumvent laws. Perhaps the thieves had a fake ID, I don't know, I wasn't there when the shop purchased my gear from the thieves. Back in 2005 pawnshops in Maryland did not require fingerprints (and still don't). Also, I never got all of my stolen property back, what I got back I was extremely grateful for and wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth by wondering why the detective didn't take my property to the police station. Perhaps he didn't need to do it since he had my notebook. He allowed me to keep my property after I identified it right there in the shop, and he had all the proof that the gear was mine in my notebook. I have no idea if the police ever caught the burglars, I moved not too long after that once I found out that the community was going through a spike in crime. But if you will take one word of truth from me? Log serial numbers and take pictures of your property.
@@darbywing2 I am a licensed Texas Pawnbroker. Pawn Shops are licensed at the state level, not the federal level. The only thing we do that's federally sanctioned is firearm transactions and we do get DL/ID information on those along with photocopies. However, on just regular pawns/sales, there is no requirement to collect a copy of the ID, though we are required to record the ID number on the pawn/sales ticket. Some pawnshops have begun to utilize point of sale photo capture but those are usually the higher end pawnshops. It sounds like this may be a mom and pop pawnshop.

I'm going to take an educated guess re: luthier. This sounds like the actions of an functioning addict, specifically a chronic relapser. So whatever he uses, he's not always using. Probably goes on a run for several months, then he goes to detox, gets out and is clean for a period of time before he inevitably relapses.
Id say that early on in your relationship with him you managed to catch him between relapses. While he's clean, he's able to focus on things, he clearly knows what he's doing when he's able to focus on the work.
Unfortunately it's always just a matter of time. If you only sent him 1 or 2 guitar at a time it's possible you may have never had a problem with him, but when you get past the dozen mark, well.....
If this is the case luckily the "functioning" part of functioning addict is that he has the resources so that he's not selling other people's things to pay for it. If I'm right this may actually be a good thing. So some point as long as he still has your things, you'll probably get them back.
The red flag is the constantly changing cell phone number. They keep changing because he doesn't pay the bill and his service is cut off. If more than a month or so goes by, when he is able to turn it back on the number he had has been given to someone else. The periods between hearing from him it's likely he may be selling or pawning his tools. Ive been repairing guitars for 15 years, and building and servicing amps for a few years less. I don't really consider myself a luthier though. I have built some over the years, but I only the limits of my skills and talent. If I were to have so sell my oscilloscope for example, when I would have to buy a new one, the cheapest, and I mean CHEAPEST as in it doesn't look like much more then a multi reader, is $600. The one that I use I bought used for close to 3 times that. I can imagine trying to dig myself out of a situation where I wasn't even able to keep my phone on, that there are probably many things that would have to be paid.

Definite possibility but not everyone who does drugs, even hard drugs, do such things. I've known all sorts of addicts, people you would never ever suspect, who are quite successful through their own hardwork.
I was an addict in my youth, along with my husband who I've been with 20 years. We had addictions to all sorts of drugs, we liked everything really. We had been told that we were some of the most functioning addicts people had ever seen but we didn't ever do anything illegal to get anything and always worked. We've never been fired ever and held down the same job for years on end.
When I was ready to quit, it was hard, but I did it completely on my own. Some people can't do that but some can. I've never been arrested. I don't and never looked like a crackhead. I did my best to take care of myself.
Now if I was ever up for 2 days straight, yeah I probably looked a but rough, but overall I've always been told by people that they were shocked at how old I was. Even when I was 35 people really believed I was early 20s. I've been asked out by young college guys and their jaw literally dropped to find out I was basically old enough to be their mother.
Now that I'm basically 40 I have aged the most in one year than I did in several but still not badly. I still don't even use makeup beyond lip gloss so obviously it's not that bad.
I haven't used any drugs, except shrooms in many years. I won't ever give up those, and it's a rare occurrence anyway. But we are successful and well off enough now with a family despite all the things we had trouble with once.
I can turn down any opiate, even right in front of me. I had my wisdom teeth pulled several years ago and I accepted the norcos out of fear of dry socket, but only took 1 the first night and threw the other 14 away once healed and on the last 2 wisdom teeth I just turned down the painkillers. I'm that much beyond it at this point.
I'm also around alchohol constantly but haven't drank in many many years. Uppers could be difficult but I avoid those and any talk about them.
Watching movies like Goodfellas still twists my stomach up and I usually have to run to the toilet. That's just seeing use on tv.
But I haven't touched any in a decade now.
I haven't had mdma since a good 10 yrs so I also avoid that but mostly because the last few times it wasn't real mdma. They are like shrooms for me. Not an addiction. If someone gave me one as good as back in the day, I'd accept sure, but would take responsibly, saving it for a weekend and kids at a friend's house.
But I don't expect to ever see the real stuff again, not like it was in the 90s. I think they make it different now and I was done trying it again many years ago.
Sorry to ramble, I just wanted to really make the point that crappy people do crappy things. I hate when people blame terrible behavior on drug usage and not themselves.
Something like PCP(the one drug I've never tried), might make someone do something truly out of their control, but most drugs the person is still in enough control to know right from wrong, especially when talking about something particularly heinous.

@@beccak1932 i was speaking from personal experience myself, it's the reason I'm willing to wager that it's drugs. Booze doesn't manifest itself like this. Any long term such addict, especially for are amor l able to remain "functioning," indefinitely; it's just no possible unless for some reason you're independently wealthy (though i know quite a few people that come from money, and even they can't maintain for too long).
It seems this story could be used as a hypothetical story used in those "how to tell if a friend or family member is an addict," it literally contains almost every red flag there is. If there's one thing that all junkies share, it's that when things get desperate (which can main anything from not being able to cop, to robbing liqueur stores) they'll take advantage of any opportunity they can.
With this story, i can completely believe that the guy at least intended to act in good faith, it most likely wasn't a case of him fully intending on ripping Trogly's off. He probably fully intended to do what he said he was going, unfortunately for the Trogly's, it was a matter of bad timing.
Everything about this story I've heard and seem many times before. Inconsistent and irregular productivity: at first everything went down as it should have. Then the ghosting, where he just falls off the face of the earth. The constantly changing phone number is a BIG sign, it's something that places like potential employers, companies, skip tracing, background checks, etc. If someone has changed their phone number more than 2 or 3 times in a decade, it's a concern because with the exception of maybe being stalked, there's not a lot of reasons to change your number unless you have no choice.
The "medical issues" is another ubiquitous story addict give. Lastly the way he disappears only to pop his head out every once in a while is why im confident that not only is the idea that he has a drug problem, but it's one that is in q constant cycle of being clean then relapsing.
If this story had 1 or 2 of these things alone, while it's still likely to be drugs, it's possible there's another cause. ALL of them though? Id have to hear a really convincing story as to how it could be anything else.
It's possible he actually has the guitars, with the exception of the Flying V. He might be selling or putting his tools in hawk to support his habits, and he can't actually do the work until he gets them back.
I agree 100%. Probably why only some guitars have been sold once he gets desperate. I'm sure he convinces himself once he gets clean he will make it all right. I've been there.
When I was 18 someone broke in my house and stole my guitar. I couple weeks later I spotted it in the back seat of a car outside a coffee shop. I broke the window out and took it back and also stole his laptop and gold clubs. He burned the serial number off the guitar with a lighter.

Things you unfortunately cannot do anymore in these times, though with the whole virus confusion out I was finally able to get my dirtbike back from a guy who stole it about 8 months ago, there were cameras on some houses but I went out during the night and took back my bike, it had been spray painted over my beautiful cover and I had to slowly peel off the ugly metallic blue paint. Still haven't found my stolen Ibanez SR800 bass though

That's a same man, him doing that to you, if he truly was having all these medical issues he should have contacted you to at least send the guitars back to you. If it does not work out with the guy coming up this weekend, you know I only live about 2 hours from Nashville, if there is anything I can do to help you, message me and let me know. I am glad you at least found the V but here is something that you should suggest to Reverb, Reverb should REQUIRE that the serial number be put in the title of the listing. This way people who have had stolen equipment could just type in the serial number and do a search and if it pops up and is the missing instrument, well then you take the next steps to getting it back! There is nothing for Reverb to have to do aside from updating their listings term of service so why wouldn't they do it?

I treasure my wife, I wouldn't beat her up and tell the cops it's good for her appearance and character. The older my guitars get, the more I take of them. Sickening as "allegedly" it went through a guitar shop for a pittance. Pretending to be a buyer, looked at a few Strats, mentioned Hendrix had a "sunburst" and "do you stock any?" Now you would probably answer "No but can try order one" or something but the dramatic change of attitude was a dead giveaway. Two thieves as it turned out. Sorry for rant 😧🙁

Dude, I totally feel your pain. When I was 10-11 yrs old I bought a super rare card in a pack of baseball cards that was worth $500. I wanted to keep it safe so I put it inside of one of my speakers to my stereo. The only one who knew where I put it was my brother, only because he walked in & saw me putting it back together. 1 week later it was gone. He denies it to this day. It sucks when someone steals from you.

I had a similar thing happen with my brother because he stole a family heirloom from our families house, so I haven't spoken to him since and probably never will. Some people might think that's harsh, but think about it -- would you do that to YOUR sibling, and if so, then what would that say how you feel about them? It's basically like telling someone that you don't give a shit about them. It's funny too because he had done various smaller irritating and/or hurtful things all my life such as hitting on my girlfriend and shit like that, and my mother always said to me "Oh, he loves you, these feelings are just your imagination" , and then he pulled that stunt of stealing the family er-loom from our house and that was like the BIG last straw, and just confirmed what I'd been feeling all my life. He's been fairly successful in business, but he's crapped on people and most who work with him seem to not work with him again, and I think it's because he always screws people even if it's just for a bit, like as an example, we co-wrote a song long ago which did get used on TV (which is the only reason I found out about this), but it turns out when he registered it with ASCAP,, he put the songwriting credits as 75% in his name and 25% in mine even though it was a 50/50% endeavor. So that's the kind of shit he's done to people all his life. He's also been married three times and it's of course it's always the woman's fault. Yeah right -- whatever... brother.

I see them all the time (I make instruments, not guitars though, they're too common and worthless, a good quality hand made custom guitar can't compete with big brands made in China and 'finished' in not-China). The dude had no photos of him making anything, just buying parts.

I once had my Washburn Harvest acoustic guitar stolen from a gig. By a HUGE stroke of luck, my bass player was talking about it at work and one of his workmates happened to overhear him. He told him that he knew who had it because he heard two guys talking about it at a party the previous weekend. This workmate (who just happened to be a hardcore bikie) paid the people a 'visit' and hey presto! Guitar back!
This is unrelated to the video but I have 1 question. Is music zoo a good place to buy a guitar from as far as doing a sweetwater type inspection? Sweetwater is out of the Epiphone inspired by Gibson Les Paul special but I'd like to buy off of some place that gives an inspection other than straight from the factory. Thanks for your help. P.s. I'm currently repairing/rebuilding my Fender Starcaster... It had some body damage and I was able to fix that with wood filler and putty. My main obstacle is the neck... Too many gauges on it. Any pointers? Preferably ones where I Don't have to buy a new neck...?

I had a 1989 Gibson les Paul custom cherry sunburst stollen back in 2008. It was beautiful. Even had the flip up string winding tuning knobs. Haven’t seen it since.

While I was lived overseas in Japan for 12 years, thieves stole from my storage unit (in the United States) one of my Marshall amps, my '83 Start, my Heritage Gold Top Les Paul, my Antares V (one of the lawsuit Vs), my Zoom MRS-802 (unit, they didn't take the software or power supply) and some other things that had sentimental value. A few moths later some people broke into my house & stole my classical guitar & my Martin Backpacker.
I hate thieves! My feeling is: death to thieves! The fewer thieves we have in the world the better societies will be. (That applies to thieves of all economic classes, such as white collar/Wall Street thieves.)

Like others have said - and what I have found personally - the most typical scammer stories are family emergencies and hospital stays, and stringing along these stories until you give up.
I ordered a $3,300 Jackson USA from a seller in Korea who delayed the shipping because his son was in the hospital. Also, he kept saying he would send more pictures, but never did. Fortunately, the guitar came through! SMH Scared, shitless...

When I first started watching your show, I never saw your face, but every now and again I would think you showed it by accident. But after watching many more of your videos, I realized you chose to minimize your facial exposure in order the accentuate the guitars. Love the channel.
