Dealer's tend to get a bad reputation for always having top dollar prices. While that is true in many situations - it is still worth checking out what other stores are selling because sometimes there can be good deals out there waiting!
Today, we shopped around Norm's Rare Guitars on their website and I was alble to find at least 2 deals and a few other reasonable priced items! Check out Norm's Rare Guitars on Reverb.com

Where Should I Hunt at Next?
The best deal I found: reverb.com/item/31221828-1976-gibson-l5s-custom?_aid=growsumo&gs_partner=Trogly
The Trogly's Guitar Show I enjoyed the ride-along.
The Trogly's Guitar Show shop at Ed and Moe’s pawn & guitar in Kennewick WA
Music go round
Hey trogly not sure if this would be worth you perusing there are 2 Les Paul supremes listed for sale in Ontario on Kijiji currently at 5000 (Cad) one in rootbeer with a tight curl and the other in a cherry sunburst with a more loose quiltyish top.
I own neither of these guitars by the way.
Try TrueTone Music in Santa Monica.... All good stuff, lots of Gibsons!
Didn’t know about your consultation service. I don’t know if I’d ever be in a position to use it but I’m even more of a fan knowing you offer that to the community at such great rates. Thank you!
You can find it here - troglysguitarshow.com/help-appraisals/
Quick advice. If you want to make a deal at Norman's, you have to call them on the phone. They don't even respond to email or messages. They figure that if you won't call, or visit, you're not that interested in their goods.
Really digging this new format , it’s like hanging out . Good stuff 👍
The Carvin you looked at has the "Lawsuit" headstock. Carvin was sued by Jackson claiming the headstock was too similar. Carvin had to discontinue that feature.
Hearing that Austin didn't get any kind of response on his offer is not a good look for Norm's.
@@joebryant8500 ..ha! Well that's business I guess,right?
...I don't like it either
@@joebryant8500 ,yeah..I see
@@joebryant8500 Norm doesn't own the warehouse. He rents space in it.
It’s possible that I might have sent it on their day off and they didn’t see it when it expired

I’m pretty sure George Gruhn has a stash hoarded away, too. The two of them do/did control the vintage guitar market. I think George started the vintage guitar market about 50 years ago. I’ve never been to Norm’s shop or had any contact with them online, but I get the same impression that a lot people seem to have about him and it isn’t a very good one. I live near Nashville and I CAN confirm from personal experience that George Gruhn and his staff are the same way. Well, unless you happen to be a celebrity. I got treated poorly in Gruhn’s when I had the cash to make $2,000+ purchase. I went back down the street and found something better at Carter Vintage, and I have since made multiple purchases from them including a 1957 Fender Mandocaster.
mosrite: the guitar used by johnny ramone. you have to get to know them. seriously. they were meant for surfy tones, but johnny ramone took one, created a frankenmosrite out of it, gave it some fast downstrokes, and there you have the ramones guitart tone.
The Ventures used and edorsed Mosrites for decades. Definitely where the Ramones got the influence.
Glen Campbell had a custom Mosrite guitar that was available for a bit apparently...
Many pickers of the time loved them Mosrites - arguably the highest output, hottest pickups ever on the face of the planet...
They look like Beetle Bailey after getting beaten by Sarge.
I went to Norm's for my first time when I was visiting LA back in November , and I tried that same SGII (mini-humbuckers?). It was very clean and played really well . I was not familiar with that model, so I passed and bought another guitar. The comments below seem to throw a lot of shade at Norms, but they were really great and me and my 2 buddies were allowed to grab and play anything we wanted....even the backroom stuff if we wished...which is why I don't buy guitars on-line. I need to hear them and feel them since I play them (not a collector). Aside: I bumped into Tim Pierce while I was there, so was a really cool crossing of the real world and the UA-cam world.
I agree w/ you about buying guitars w/o playing them. I sprung for a vintage Gibson on-line last year and got ripped-off by a shady Guitar Center rep from Hollywood. I swore I would never do it, got antsy and paid for it. On Norm- he can justify jacking his prices a tad by having such a wide selection. He has a very large market in the Orange County area alone. For a 'hands-on' shop, he does very well.
Trogly: "Ahh, A White Supreme"
YT: "dangit!! we almost had him... almost"

Super episode! Yours is my #1 channel even though I play bass. Thanks for all that you do for the world of guitars!
Tell Norm that you are close personal friends with Carlos Guitarlos. 👍
LOL
I enjoy watching you hunt. I can vicariously live through you. :)
Love ya austin! Been watching the channel for years.
Same
@@otavio048 Same for me too.
@@hkguitar1984 Hey it's the boys
I would love to see you get into PRS guitars. I recently purchased my first one, a Custom 24, and it plays, sounds, and looks amazing. I too enjoy their story and the history of how Paul started and grew the company. They just released their ninth edition of the dragon guitar. Amazing detail in the fretboard dragon inlay! I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!
What an episode! Loved the live consultation on the R9!
I love watching your mannerisms and gesticulations when you do this, especially when you spot a really good or really bad deal! Keep up the good work as it shows to me that you really care about what you are doing.
You love watching him gesticulate? That's pretty weird..even if gesticulating isn't something sexual...
@@mboyer68 Maybe enthusiasm instead of gesticulation would have been a better word.
@@Edward1312 Well I wouldn't have learned a new word if you had used enthusiasm, so it was perfect:)
Thank you
Hey Trogly. Thanks for doing this. Wife is going through medical stuff and in the office you’re helping me stay calm. That’s worth it’s weight in gold
New lefty Gibson Les Paul 1959 Custom Shops are available and, like you said, at similar prices to the second hand one you featured. The 60th anniversary models are a particularly good guitar.
I always love to check shops for good deals. Especially if they consign instruments. Found a beautiful, stock 1981 Gibson ES-369 on consignment at a local shop in Indiana. Picked it up for $1200 plus tax, had the original case too! Good deals are always lurking in unlikely places.
Quickly becoming my favorite channel!
Yes, Gibson did once make a thinline ES-175D, although I don't think it lasted too long. When one thinks about it, it was just a fancier version of an ES-125TDC, except with humbuckers, instead of P90s.
I've been in Norman's shop. Fantastic store! Well worth the trip even if you live out of state. Its about an hour's drive from my house. FYI: I started my reverb shop. Tobin Guitar Works.
Waiting for more of those lawsuit era guitars. Really wanna see you review a high end Greco from the late 70s!! Happy Hunting!!!
Wesson Colt Gross, fake guitars
Wyatt G Hey I remember this conversation from the last time! Good to see you! Glad you still are holding your opinion. I don’t consider these guitars fake as they are their own brands and not being passed off as Gibson’s. They are unique and a part of history. But hey, you wanna believe that you go for it buddy!! More power to you!!
Wesson Colt refreshing respectful reply to a different opinion.
Thanks for you videos you allow guitar players such as I who can't afford a guitar to dream thanks again Bill from Johnstown Pa
You have become a ACE of the history and worth of thhhe Gibson. brand! ❤️ Amazing talent for a young guy. Your pretty fair with prices too!
Love this channel. Was a bit on the fence since it’s Gibson heavy but heck I’m learning a lot more than I knew before. Btw I love Fender Friday’s!!!
Cheers from Brazil. Try and find a good deal in São Paulo! Impossible... Happy new year to you and family!
You should go to Winter Namm Trogly, it's really fun; everyone is so friendly... it's a great time to network too! You outta visit Normans too....Michael is the best! That late 60's SG is pretty awesome looking! Norms is worth checking often ... they always have some deals and so many guitars, all quality stuff and they'll work with you! Thanks for the Vid.
I'd like to see more of Trogly's anwsering more questions in the future. I especially loved that one since I'm also a left handed player and the price range for LH guitars are really sketchy sometimes.
Thing about the Mosrite you should know is a quote from it's most famous player, Johnny Ramone, "They're kind of made of cardboard and some of them are made from better cardboard than others"
I’ve bought 3 guitars from Norms super friendly and we always negotiated a deal. They even gave me a decent price on a trade. I always look forward to stopping buy when I am in town.
I can’t believe I’ve been watching you for over two years!
Times Fun when You're Having Flies................
@@hkguitar1984 ..hahha,im gonna have to steel that one from ya!
Good stuff man, always super informative !! First time ive ever seen your face too !!! HAHA Thanks again
I've got a Jackson from the 2000s with the same headstock as the Carvin. The two little differences are 1) mine is reverse 2) the little swoop under the tuner on mine is more pronounced
Hi Trogly, nice video, really entertaining and you've got an incredible knowledge, but I think that the overall volume is quite low. There's a difference of 5/6 lufs between the video and the ads. I've checked some other of your latest videos and noticed that the lack of volume is really common. I hope you'll find the info useful and it helps to improve your videos and grow your channel. Have a great day and a happy new year!
I've got the volume on 50% and its plenty loud enough. Maybe it's your speakers
@@Christopher-bw9ny or maybe you've got quieter ads 😆
@@JulianDoe I don't get ads 😉
@@Christopher-bw9ny lucky you!
Ah Norman’s rare guitars, my other go to UA-cam channel. Really enjoyed your visit to there website, as you say a great collection of guitars, but at a price.
Lemmo shreds!
Norm always has a good selection of Epiphone Coronets. Love those.
I just noticed you’re at 85k I remembered when you were in the 2 thousands max!congratulations keep up the good work! I see that you’re getting so confident on camera and it makes me happy to see you doing well
I hope he can hit 100K in 2020.
I had a Gibson SG Custom, 3xHB and Bigsby in 1975/6 (I think), all gold hardware, walnut body. The neck was stable on it but not on the SG Standards at the time which were quite whippy. Was fun to play as I recall, with no tuning issues. I ended up trading it in on an Ibanez Musician - MC300, through neck, Mahogany body - that thing rocked the house down. Wish I still had them both LOL.
Definitely curious to hear the Snakepit story if you feel like getting into it some day
I went there in November of 2019 and it is an amazing store. I’m a bluegrass guitarist and they had some amazing acoustics. Pre war Martins and pre war Gibson acoustics etc etc. If you’re ever in the area I recommend going there.
Love these videos when you go online shopping.TY
The pickup is flipped on the Tal Farlow because Wes Montgomery did that to get more treble response. With the inlays it is definitely eye catching lol. Black is actually a rare custom color for a Ventures Moserite. I’d love to have that Super 400, same model Scotty owned and Elvis played on the ‘68 Comeback Special. I used to want one of those 70’s L-5’s bad! You’re making it start over again!
I love my SG Deluxe, all the bling and NO trapazoid inlays. I upgraded to a roller bridge and sealed bearing bar on the Bigsby. It really sings. Got it from MF for $1600.00 a few years ago. The neck angle is shallow so there is little picking area. The toggle pot went intermittent so I switched to a std toggle switch.
I was actually thinking of purchasing that 70s Gibson SG. It looks so cool even with the butterfly on the headstock
That Carvin is nowaday Kiesel guitar, the brand is renamed, and having beautiful tops on guitars :0
Love your show! Hello to all my fellow guitar geeks here!
A buddy of mine had the bass version of the Guild and it was a great guitar.
Yes, I do agree Todd does not always respond to the Reverb store but when he does he is always helpfull an personal. He told me he gets crazy busy..
Try Dave's guitar shop in LaCrosse, Wisc. He has rooms with different brands in each, new, used, vintage, you name it. Every time I go there,it impresses the snot out of me. At least take a look trogly. Love your show!!
Hey, I just wanted to say I think your videos are fantastic. I came across you a month ago or so and I've gone back and watched several of them. I learn a lot from you - just you checking stuff out. It's hard to find gear videos with actual useful information I can use.
Thank you, I really enjoy your shows. You have given me a lot of insight on Gibson guitars. I have always wanted one but as life would have it its just not in the cards right now. One of these days.....
I would recommend a epiphone les Paul custom Koa 808 that is with tax
You should make a little series where you hit the road in search of awesome guitars. I live in Boston been thinking about visiting my sister in Vermont and hunting some old guitars.
What's funny is even after the Gibson Tal Farlow model came out, he mostly still used his ES-350 (25.50" scale length archtop).
John Scofield does that too, he has his Ibanez signature model but he uses the original guitar that the sig model was based off of rather than using off the shelf signature guitar
what's also funny is *I believe that same guitar is now $15k on norms website lol
What did you think of the 225-t on the screen? How does the tailpiece/bridge even work? Thanks for the daily videos.
Would you consider doing a beginners guide to finding guitar deals?
Kind of what to look for in local deals and how to tell if the guitar is not a scam.
And maybe an introduction to guitar parts?
Bit of a big request but it is something I haven't really seen anyone else do.
I have a great idea Trogly!
You should buy the Vintera 70's Strat and compare it to the 76' Strat you documented, that'll tell us how accurate the Vintera guitars really are :)
Love Norm's channel.
Like anyone else I do have preferences when it comes to which guitars I like and dislike.
That said I could imagine myself playing every guitar you looked at today!
I think I have that G.A.S. sickness everyone has warned me about.........................
Great video, thank you.
Yeah, ts a real thing, and it'll get ya. Its okay too have some G.A.S. and bloating AS LONG as you can play. Don't allow it to hold you back. Some people get it so bad...especially in the gear age we are in...that it becomes a handicap. They start thinking that they would play more if they only had this guitar, or that they would have good tone if they had this amp, or an Axe FX.
This is why I always tell people to get a good guitar as soon as they know guitar is for them. I know a couple young kids who enjoyed shopping for gear more than using the gear they bought. Neither one can play a D chord or a major scale...or even play a note. Day 1 bad, but they love the new Sweetwater catalog. Maybe they love the idea of playing? But to actually do it is daunting?
thats a perfect strap button spot for a pre- broken headstock SG
I dig the SG style Meldy Makers. I passed on one in burgundy mist for $125 when I was shopping for my first guitar in the early 80's, and I still regret it. I only like then about $1200 worth, though.
The All American 2 and SGX are the guitars that got away from me. Both have beefy necks, and the AA2 is a surfy fun guitar. I need to pick one up eventually lol.
Also, are you ever going to tell the story of what happened with the snakepit?
cheers! love the channel!
Ohh wow Carlos Santana played a Gibson L5S Custom Beautiful guitar ))
I noticed the sg jr that is a sg 1. Sg 1's I believe we're in the red finish and black. My drummer has a black one with sgx truss cover too. I also have a yellow sgx as well.
Your vids rule.
Watchout for the Solid L5. I worked in a shop back in the 70's and we had one come in with the bridge placed about a 1/ 4 inch off it could never be intonated. Pretty bad for the top of the line guitar!
Great and good guitars are so much cheaper in the US than in the UK, we pay a premium here, which is a shame , you have a superb market to work from, another great video
Loving these hunting vids!
Maybe you have already done a video on it, but have you ever made a demo of a The Heritage.
I know the funny looking headstock is a turn off for most, but the quality and history is amazing on them
I really like this new Guitar Search format, I think it’s more friendly for youtube users as well as guitarists
These get pretty good views and crazy good watch time metics so they are here to stay!
Have you done a history of the head stock logo? I was always kinda weirded out by my 89 standards logo, its kinda skinny looking, but I have seen other like it.
That International Series Strat's finish is called Sahara Taupe
Good to see your face finally
Will you test any of the Dean guitars for 2020?
Awesome episode
Great show.
have you ever had a blueshawk to review? would love to hear your take on them. yeah norms would be a great place to spend an inheritance
Chris Williams
He mentioned in a recent video or maybe in the comments of a recent video that he is looking for a particular color.
My only comment is that I miss guitar of the day with MA...I think there was a lot of mileage in the brand cultivation that was untapped but the cool think is it's also my opinion that people wouldn't bang on him too hard if he popped up with another similarly formatted or included segment with whatever he's doing now.
I subscribed to Wildwood demos because Greg Koch and others...when I can afford one, then I'm more likely to go to where the demos are solid, and I think MA kind of self-set some standards that didn't yet exist in an entertaining way that lent itself to discerning as much of a true nature of an instrument as you possibly could from an internet video...
You're going to have to get out of Ohio at some point buddy. You hate traveling, but traveling would love you. Get out into the world.
You love traveling but traveling hates you. You need to stay home more. Sounds weird when flipped right? He gets out he just doesn’t prefer it. I can see that. You clearly can’t.
@jarodreddig63 damn dude calm down lol you don't have to be a knight in shining armor and defend his honor 😂 it sounds weird when you flip what he said bc nobody would ever say "you need to stay home more" to somebody, unless they were sick or something lmao. There's a lot of culture in the world to take in. Try it sometime.
Ha! That greedy ol bastard good luck! Lol
SAID THE UNKNOWING ONE
You should do videos on questions regularly. Would be cool
The finish on that Knaggs guitar just makes me think of a Monster Energy Drink.
The power of Trogly strikes again...while watching this video and scrolling through Facebook Marketplace I came across an ad for a Squier Standard Strat for $100...same guy was selling a like new US made Fender Princeton Chorus amp for $175...a few kind messages later and we worked out a trade for the Strat and amp for my Jay Turser rosewood Telecaster and $50...
Old carvings are great, you would freak out on the cases
Do a video on the new acoustasonic strat when it comes out
Was that pot leaves scratched into those tuners on the first guitar?!?
that headstock looks bigger on the L5, i had a late 60s early 70s SG in 1976 i got on trade, and it had no serial number on the headstock.. Joe Walsh is a big Carvin fan.
Awesome show. Tanx Troggly. I'm a Teamster Driver at WB in Burbank I get a lot of Down Time & that was verry Informative & Enjoyable to watch (On a Union Pay $cale) I'd Much Prefer Buying a Fender from U than Norm. ♥🇺🇸😁
Les Paul Smartwood in the background?
What is that music at the very end of the video ? I love it !!!
Do a full episode with an SG Junior please. Vintage or modern.
I wonder if that is the same Tele Antigua that’s been hanging on the wall for a while while Lemmo is playing the guitar of the day?
kinda surprised that that Craig Chaquico touring guitar is still up for sale, think I saw it one or two years ago on their website, but when I see the pricing I might understand why. I think it even went up.
You're kindda stressing me out when you keep skipping over that Epiphone Coronet. Great guitars! You really need to document one, I'd bet you'd really like 'em!

Joe Knaggs guitar is nice. Lovely well made instruments. I would put them alongside: Tom Anderson and Don Grosh, instruments.
Knaggs was originally working for PRS too, so yeah I felt weird that Austin talked about PRS and Knaggs back to back, funny coincidence
They look so nice, but all the ones in the store here where really underwhelming playing..especially for the price
Commenting is always weird when you don't know what to write.
But, well, your videos are pretty cool and very helpful, so keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!
Cool stuff my man,... yeah the early white LPCs are going through the roof (& blk beauties.) I paid an embarrassing price for a stock 74. Much less than the 76 in your video but it was rough. The upshot is I still need to get a stock 75 or earlier blk beauty to round out my collection. Btw have you ever seen the LPC tuxedo? Cool guitar.
