📚 Description: I really like Norlin Era limited edition guitars that have fancy headstock overlays. There is one in particular that I've always liked the look of that belongs to an acoustic guitar - Imagine my surprise when I found it on this strange looking 1979 335-S ! Is it a prototype... a factory left overs, employee build or a fake? I guess we will just have to look at all the clues!

I cant afford that guitar but I am going on a 3 month guitar building course with Crimson next year and a double cut LP was going to be my second guitar after a set neck Tele but this is just ripe for copying!
I’m envious of the guitar building course! Enjoy!🖖🏼
Very cool Andrew, all of your build ideas sound great.
I love Crimson’s work! So cool to be going on one of their courses ❤️
Big fan of Crimson Guitars. Have a great time on the course.
Man, im jealous, i have been watching Ben for almost 4 years now, and i hope that in the future i cand go do a course there too.
Good luck
I think this is one of the best sounding guitars you've reviewed in a while. Very versatile tones.
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!

Hk guitar is in the house
@@christianengleman2704 Now we are all here!

Dude. Respect. Even though I find it weird that someone owns a ridiculous amount of guitars and seems to buy a new one almost every day, you do your work perfectly organized. Your eye for detail is astonishing!
He buys them to sell, you can find most in his Reverb shop eventually.
@@pigxstix okay
@@pbague People are willing to pay a premium for the documentation and the research he does on them and of course the guitar from a youtube vid. For example if you buy this guitar you get a good insight into it's history. You typically dont get that on ebay or reverb. And if you want to sell it later...you can always point to this video and that will help resale value a lot. And he is honest too. The vid says its likely a parts guitar. You can be sure that someone on ebay or reverb would at some point try to sell it as a prototype. They might even still do that but this video protects against that too.
@@pigxstix he keeps a lot of them for his museum.
The best players in the world probably know a fraction of what Trogly knows about Gibsons.
I bought one of these in college in 1988. $100 (the headstock had been broken off but well repaired). Owned it for about 25 years (rarely played it) before giving it away. Gibson Dirty Fingers sounded pretty cool, but the odd backward angle of the neck relative to the body was weird - seemed more extreme than a LP or SG.
I'd buy that guitar today if it was in my budget. Looks great, sounds awesome! Paired with that Marshall BB it sounds incredible to my ears.
That last lick/tone combo sounded really good, especially on the neck pickup.
😮 this guitar really looks similar to my Les Paul Special Double Cut 2015! WOW I didn't know that Gibson made solid body 335s
I still think its supper cool to have a 335-S with that headstock and the Block inlays Austin. Its a one of a kind. You Should keep it for the museum for sure. Guitar playing is still progressing. That mute strum thing your doing is not as easy to learn as some might think. Thanks again, enjoyed the video
When I bought my first very serious expensive professional guitar. The lowest priced Gibson was the Paul. they wanted like 1200 for an SG in 1979. So I took a different path and bought a Hamer Sunburst in 1980 brand new from the back street music store. I think I won. In my older age I have considered buying a les paul just because. It left my bucket list when I bought my first Hamer.I traded that guitar in for a Hamer Standard the following year when he had one in. Still have it and it's worth 5 digits to the right person. It's the most collectible model Hamer hand crafted. I have been considering buying a Les Paul lately. Certainly not on my bucket list. I have never owned a Gibson. I played quite a few. that guitar looks like a Hamer which was obviously part of their target but head stock has no comparison. The Hamer Special and Standards sported Shaler mini tuners and likened a les paul jr but the Sunburst had a carved maple top. They were and still are Les Paul killers but rare as USA hand made production went out a few decades ago and license was sold.
That neck is virtually the exact spec as the maple neck on my 83 Gib Heritage Custom acoustic. Same headstock inlay, blocks, back burst of serial area. Best neck I've ever played, on any guitar.
Love it. Those DFs sound great trough the Marshall. Well done Austin! The dirt is on point & from a truly unique guitar
I like the case...lol
Didn't Gibson used three pieces for their maple necks in that time period?
I also think the seller would've mentioned any writing in control cavity...lol
I never knew Gibson made some solidly body 335s!? Whoa! Austin I would not consider this guitar or a loss but a cool and rare find. If it is indeed a parts guitar at least it was put together at the factory and done with care buy a skilled worker. And those cool inlays on the headstock as well. I would say you definitely have a very unique piece there and one that is practically a one of one guitar!
I've owned a Hamer Sunburst Archtop XT Series for a couple of decades now, and that 335-S reminds me of that guitar rather a lot. A long time ago, I had a GK-55 that I gigged with for a few years. I remember not being really knocked out by the sound of its Dirty Fingers pickups, although I did use the coil split sound a lot. (We played a bunch of Prince songs!). You might say my Hamer splits the difference between the 335-S - being a symmetrical double cutaway mahogany body - and the regular semi hollow ES-335 because the Hamer has Alnico magnet equipped humbuckers instead of the Dirty Fingers.
About 10 years ago I made one of these guitars out of black walnut with a book-matched black walnut veneer which gave it some visual character. It is possibly one of my worst built guitars but she plays and sounds like a demon. What I really wanted was a "The SG" in walnut and now I have one of those which I bought off you! The walnut is so different on the SG, do you have any idea what type of walnut Gibson used on those guitars?
that middle sound is pretty nice in all configurations.
It looks like an early PRS. I am VERY impressed with this one despite the ebony cracks. It looks fun to play. It sounds VERY good.
The last 4 digits on the number are the last four from an old phone number we had in the 70's and 80's. a push-button wall phone with a 20 ft coiled cord..so my sister can take it into the bathroom for an hour.
Looks like the nut was replaced. Probably has a brass one originally. The brass ones were slightly thinner. That may explain the truss Rod cover being flattened on the bottom screw hole. Very cool guitar. 🤘🏻
Literally just had my new guitar delivered. It's an ES 175 copy with 2 vintage style humbuckers, gold hardware, full binding and a Florentine cutaway in Arctic White. Absolutely stunning guitar. This is my dream guitar. Always wanted one since I started playing 25 years ago. Blown away.
@David Wang Yes. As I was watching this video my guitar was delivered. I found that surprising.... literally.
Hi Austin, good evening, I hope your day went well. I'm logging in a little later tonight to see your latest video. Take care, always enjoyable. 😊 Okay, just finished watching, what a cool rare beast, I do hope you keep this rare beauty for your collection, well, maybe not so rare but definitely unique. I'd love it if you were to someday showcase your entire collection, now that would be a great video! One last thing, you're playing has definitely improved from when I first started listening to you, sounds great!
There is such a thing as coil tap which is different from coul split .tap tap's into so much of the winding where as split takes a coil out of the pickup .
Wow the clean split tones were very 70s funk.
Love this guitar and love the finish and super love the head stock!
Only issue with using the Bluesbreaker is that now I find it hrd to tell what these guitars sound like compared to other guitars in other videos. Always using the same amp is maybe a bit boring for you, but it's great when you watch lots of your videos back to back like I do.
I dunno I kinda value the story of "Some Gibson employee that always wanted to build his own Gibson from scratch finally did and it's not only one of a kind it's pretty awesome!"
Probably means it's built to higher quality and care too
A very melodic tonality. A beautiful sounding example
Yup this 335S is a beauty, well done! BTW, what's with the neck pickup wire rout going up under the fretboard/neck?
I wonder if you black lighted the pickup cavity if you'd see anything. That Marshall amp sounds great.
Man I used to not really like your demo tone but that bluesbreaker is great!
My 2nd guitar in the early 90s was the paul. I think I got it for $300 or so. Put in some dimarzios and coil split switch. Was one of my favorite guitars
I love the sound of this gitfiddle, very rich and full of depth.
If you finger pick the guitar you may get softer warmer tones (you want to use this method when you demo the tones on your guitars); I find when I use a pick and dig in, it gives a clicky sharp sound.
It's strange to look at because its a solid body you'd think DC but the way its setup it's got the look mostly of a 335. And I'm sure the neck kind of throws that all off. It does have somewhat of a different tone. Don't think it's all the dirty fingers pickups but do like the coil split option and the tones are good in that setting too.
There's a -one-of-a-kind Gibson ES-359 on Craig's list in the Seattle/Tacoma Area. A prototype that wasn't picked up. Lots of provenance.
Sound pretty good for a non alnico magnet in the end i love those df pup ! Hard to stop playing axe , ain't that a good signe ? Look cool with blocs inlays & make me want to play my 81 custom lol .thx.
reminded me a little bit of a double cut melody maker at first
Having that image on the headstock is cool
That 335s is really sweet, I’d love to have that guitar !!!
I really like the way those coil splits sound!
Very nice, not a loss at all. One of a kind Gibson 335-s, heck yes.
Could the Gibson build ledger's provide any info? That's a nice one Austin, I'd keep it if I were you!
Nice, finish definitely looks old and misty. What's the fretboard radius compared to a reg 335s and that heritage acoustic??😃
For hard to read writing, I suggest taking a photo of the writing, upload it to your computer and then manipulate the contrast, saturation, brightness and color. Sometimes it'll just pop out. I do this with artworks and signatures.
I'd want that if only for it's clean neck tones. Holy cow, that sounds good!
Man do I love all the geeky knowledge you put out on GIbson.
These are cool guitars it be cool if gibson did a modern one with 24 fret
An "ES-240" is a very rare Gibson, Three are only know from 1977-78
Okay, this is probably a model that I would want if I wanted a vintage class guitar again. That's saying a lot, considering I would be loyal to the traditional thinline rendition.
IMO, this thing sounds awesome. Something about it catches my ear more so than any I've heard from Gibson. Granted, they all sound good, but this sounds better than just good. Of course, that's all up to personal preference.
Peace ✌️
I agree, it has a full and balanced tone profile.
That $6,000 made in England bluesbreaker doesn't hurt
Oh wait only $4,000
Totally agree sounds great
Nice pickin today!
Love that 335 S!
Oh man I love it, this looks like my ideal guitar. I love double cuts, I love contoured bodies and I love SG necks.
reminds me of Dan Armstrong guitars of lucite in the 70s. your friend in tone, Norman Mozley
Very versatile. Not wowed by the dark sunburst. The natural standard color was cool. I guess they were going for uniqueness, but I would prefer one of Gibson's reds.
Lovely looking guitar. Gotta say Austin dude, your demos are sounding better & better since you got the Marshall imo.
You gotta be loving how the cost of guitars has gone way up. Even though you do get the more rare and unique ones
Damn, I saw this and passed it over thinking it was fake/modified. Shoulda picked it up!! Nice snag
Could be the guitar and or amp but that sounds much better
I like that very different was fun Trogly I've never seen it listed what distortion pedal do you use? I know it's not just distortion from the amp I'd really like to know as you get great distortion sounds
This is my dream guitar! But I think it looks better in silverburst.
1979 was the best year I was born on Earth
Same here bud. Time keeps rollin away, I cant get it under control...
'79 was a pretty good year, no offence though, I really think 1962 was the best year to be born!
LOL
Lol.. it was the only year you were born on earth…. Still a good year though..
I was already done with my time as a KISS fan by the time you were born.
@@bryantwalley Oh I forgot the period after year.
Nice guitar...and that neck looks like maple to my eye!!!!
Not sure if it was the Marshall or the 335S but the sound was cutting through quite nicely....Well, maybe that's why Gibson and Marshall are a sweet marriage.
Fairly certain it’s not an acoustic neck, the neck blanks are drastically different, I suppose you could Frankenstein one but what’s the point, more likely they just used the inlays
REALLY enjoy your channel! Thanks for the great content!
That's a beautiful finish in my humble opinion.
Trogly please please do a new documentation on the 79 walnut The SG. I have one that I’ve had for 9 years and I adore it but it has been modified slightly (refin, pots, nut, abr1) and it’s impossible to find good photos and info about them. I know you did it in the past but it was your old review style.
I have the “prototype” to document soon. Sadly someone ruined it with a kahler though!
@@Trog omg thanks for replying and I cannot wait. I’m specifically interested in the control cavity shots and history about it. My example is super clean but as stated it’s not perfectly original. I’ll send you a dm with a picture of it.
@@Trog I dmd you some photos on instagram of my 79.
Reminds me of a Travis Bean of that era....sort of.
I own one of these, a 1981, in Silverburst and mint condition. Paid $500 for it new back then at a small retail shop going out of business and it's worth over $3,600 now. :)
That is a gorgeous guitar
That's basically what the Yamaha Image Standard was. Only mine has a flame maple top.
Why don't they put those pickups in all their guitars,I think they sound amazing, nice guitar trog.
Always wanted a Peavy Delta Blues or the Peavy Classic 30, heard them a few times, WOWZA!!!.......💘🤍💙🎸💮✍🏼
Disappointed that it's not a prototype? Well Trogly, I can fix that for you! I have a particular set of skills. Take that back plate off and leave me and my Sharpie alone with it and when you come back, voila, it will now say "ES 335 Prototype". Of course, I charge quite a bit for my services...
Neat guitar, but the pickups sound weak, particularly on the clean tones. Maybe they need to be raised so they're closer to strings.
Very nice one off 335S just a beautiful find. Nicer than the production ones in my opinion. 👍
❗️❗️❗️RREEEED THISSSSS ❗️❗️❗️ TROGLY ❗️I liked it when you used the Reverb the other day ❗️ that sounded real nice, go for a low mid and high bass and medium treble ….Or try everything @ 12:00 and go from there 💪🏼😀🎸
2:30 With walnut going at 12$-14$ per board feet these days, and that today's crappy walnut, not the old growth that Gibson probably used, Right off the bat, just in lumber cost is enough to make those unique guitars sell at huge primium.
That is one CRAZY COOL guitar. Just gorgeous!
Are you using an impulse response in your daw? Or just miking the Marshall straight into your daw?
An impulse response usually helps for a better recorded live amp tone.
Great content as per usual👊🏼🎸
yeah it also helps to practice your guitar more than breaking them down to look at the insides
@@toemasmeemswhat's your point? The guy owns a guitar shop.
So that's a Gibson Easter egg then 🤔
I looks more like a studio model or intermediate level one, as no brass nut, neck binding etc.
Watched till the end and I agree that looks like an employee built and with some extra love too.
What a guitar.
It doesn't matter what that is, someone actually spent time and effort making that 👍
That neck, from where I'm sitting & as a collector of, both, guitars AND wood-blanks and as an amateur woodworker, 100% looks like mahogany to me.
Huh, i have a Ibanez double cut and i always thought it was their version of a SG, but it looks exactly like this body shape…interesting
The wood looks like maple but you said it was mahogany. Or did I misunderstand?? A beautiful guitar.
That is amazing !! I would never let that one go !!
I think this is my favorite Gibson guitar, I love the sound the look I'm sure when you said an expensive test or what ever the reference is my point wish I could drop the money to acquire this beauty. Who knows maybe by the first week of May I can, that would be great if it's ment to be I won't forget for sure, hope if the universe is on my side we shall see. Thrn get rid if my Mrcican strat and Roland crap cube I can't stand these 2 pieces I have.. ukk can't get any tone I like, that had it right on man... cool
Then a late 70's Fender something amp
I want a 335 s so much. This makes me want one even more.
Demo sounded great! The new amp is a keeper
Great episode, I hope you keep taking chances, makes excellent content
B a hell of a blues machine! Was hoping you found a random prototype though.
I kinda liked the split tones when I normally don't!
Kinda like Johnny Cash's song about working in the Cadillac factory and building a parts car from different years. "One Piece At A Time."
The sound in this review is pretty awesome.
That ... is a Killer Guitar! (I would probably lower that neck pickup...just a little)
that is the most beautiful, juiciest neck pickup i've ever heard, thanks for this vid, trogly!
You need to break in the speakers of your amp, it got construction paper sound to it.
Yeah, fresh stiff speakers.
IMHO, I think the only way to get a Marshall to sound like a Marshall is to crank it up to about 3/4 volume.
Most people are unable to crank up a 20W amp to full power in a home type setting, especially if you have children and a wife.
Sounds great coil split!
Now you have to redo ALL your videos with the Bluesbreaker!! Go go go!!
Great sounding guitar.
I love it! Reminds me of a Travis Bean.
