The Volume of Bass from 1966 going Forward on Beatles Albums part of the reason why I learned Bass first then Guitar / lead , Bass is my Comfort Place with how much a good bass part can change a song !
I would LOVE to own a Les Paul RECORDING Bass , but cost no way with disability pay . Have had various basses but never a Flying V or L.P. body with or without F holes .

I suspect most of those are projects that were finished (or far enough along to call it a failure) and then cannibalized for parts for other projects.
He accomplished more than many! Research multi track recording.
Least he got to play weekly at the Iridium in NYC until he died. Gigging in your 90's has to be the ultimate.
I have a friend like him. He has 100 projects on the go at the same time. Instead of doing job #1, finishing it, do job #2, finish it, etc he does a little on each project each week. (Its been years and only 1 thing got finished so far) Presumably he plans to finish everything at the same time 😂 yet nothing ever actually gets done. I'm a one job at a time guy. I actually get stuff FINISHED though.....
Less known than Les is founding Chicago guitarist Terry Kath. In 1970 and 71, Terry played a Les Paul Recording model. It's most audible on *Chicago III* and portions of *Chicago at Carnegie Hall.* Shortly after Chicago appeared at Carnegie Hall, Terry was the featured cover artist in Guitar Player Magazine, photographed in monochrome with the Les Paul Recording. In his interview, he stated that he liked rhe lo-impedence pickups.
My first actual Gibson was an ES-320 with the low impedance PUs, and I love it still. Such a nice tone.
I bought a set of checks Les Paul had signed back in the 40's from the juliens auction. i have them all framed with a picture of les and mary ford along with the juliens paperwork.

that white SG is really cool looking. the guitar body itself seems a little rounder than a standard SG and the pickguard design is quite rather groovy. i'd have loved to have known more about that one.

The Les Paul recording bass was played by Donnie Purnell (1977 - 1996) of the band KIX

I see these LP recording models actually sell for around £1900 -£2000 on Reverb (june- Sept 23) but are listed around the £3K to £4K price and the dealer sites are priced the same, even the 2014 re-issues are priced the same as a '70s vintage.

From the Railroad Track and The Log to these rare unique mods, Les Paul was forever seeking the ultimate guitar for his personal use... I had no idea that he continued this quest throughout his entire lifetime.... And he was working with the finest materials available.... Now I don't feel so bad when I hack up My 150 Dollar pawn shop guitars to make them my own..... I am once again educated, amused, and inspired by YOU , Trogman.... You're the best. Rock on....-Corky

This Les Paul Estate Auction series has been great fun, and very interesting to see all the various prototypes, especially the Recording variants in this episode. As a teen in the 1970s I wanted very much to buy an LP Recording and my teacher talked me out of it as not very practical. Great to see in detail Lester's lifelong talent and enjoyment for tinkering.
Alot of these recording models look like a mad scientist got to em humm Edward Van Halen must have got some ideas from Les basically just go for it 👍🤘
Yep, EVH needed the right tool for the job. Warts and all.
As for the refrets. I read a long time ago in an interview with Les that he did NOT like nibs and preferred his frets to span the entire fretboard, so it makes sense. As for the buggered stuff, these things were just tools for him to accomplish a final product for what he needed them to do or at least find out. Same with Chet Atkins, Zappa, Garcia and many others.

I remember seeing a video of him while in his 70's with his MOTHER and they were drinking a beer together! Good genes.
His guitars were tools to make his music, for sure. He cared more about how they functioned and sounded than how they looked.

the low impedance "line" were some of the best sounding guitars Gibson has ever made
and they'll never make a proper reissue beacuse people just dont want good sounding guitars anymore
Refretted by Danny Gatton best of this lot.
Perhaps the only guy that could take a Gibson home and hack it up, and not lose any value.

As a Django fan, that is definitely an interesting question to ponder. Assuming he were to ever get interested in changing from a full sized acoustic to electric or something for both, my first thought was a Godin. I have an excellent copy/replica of his Maccaferri style guitar with the zero fret, slotted headstock, same body shape with the small oval sound hole and it's remarkable how close it sounds to his tone, even with my feeble attempts at noodling on his works.

Had a V in an original case
I ripped the neck brace out of the case and used a travel pillow under the neck .Because when I would take the guitar out
It was bent to be sharp tuned (back warped) while stored in the case

That one's been on my bucket list for a long time. Came close to snagging a new one just a couple months ago for about the same as a Demo/Mod shop Les Paul. There are a couple dealers that have them on ebay who occasionally discount them briefly from $3299 down to $2540. I'd just gotten a Les Paul when they did it last time and kicked myself for the bad timing. I may hit the button and nab one when they do it again.

so many parallels betwen Les Paul and Eddie Van Halen.
I much prefer no binding.
Had to send two Flying V's back to Gibson because the E string would catch between those crappy raised nibs and the frets, all up the neck.
No use at all to a lead guitarist.
Les didn't like neck binding and actually removed it from a few guitars
Or nibs, preferring a whole fret wire.
My first electric was a LP Recording...
At the time they were the 2nd worst Gibson you cd buy (the gold hollowbody was no1)...
I can't help but wonder if the "Junior" design for those prototypes was to make a no-frills less expensive version of the recording/personal. Slab body, simplified, less defined shape makes me think so.

From what I can gather from Les Paul's modification and his signature preference guitars. The man doesn't really appreciate Gibson Les Paul guitar standard of pretty maple top and powerful humbuckers. Les prefers the jangly sound of Fendersque single coil tone that's just my guess
so how heavy is the heavy bass?

He really liked the low impedance pickups. So never feel bad about putting a set of emgs or fishmans in a les paul, or hacking out chunks of it with whatever is around to accommodate extra controls. He would have wanted it that way. We can carve up our gibsons to honor the man.

well first of all, great video trogly. great history. Les Paul and his fantastic guitar design literally changed my music life when i bought my first one of 8 les pauls in 1976. thats a fact! but ill have to say the guitars Les Paul played are as mickey mouse abortions of guitars as ive ever seen. the wiring and low impedance and switches and knobs are just so mickey mouse and unusable in band live playing in anyway shape or form its almost rediculas. but my thanks to les Paul and his original design. gibson kinda screwed him with the SG design in 61. but that was over come in the 70s with the great bands and live concerts. nothing beats a les paul standard in a live environment on stage period. thanks for the video. sure got my mind churning
I remember reading that a very few of the semi hollow Signatures early production had the oblong pickups before they switched to the rectangular ones.

Interesting, with how DIY Les was, that he chose to work with Gibson over Leo. You hear the story that the Tele was too ugly for Les… but dang, those recording models are ugly as sin!
