      @PRO GAMER I agree in a general but honestly the M1 air range laptops are CHEAPER than many competitors, yet offer better performance/ergonomics on a machine that isn't even intended for pros. I think they really disrupted the industry by going in-home with the chip production. For the higher end macs, I was surprised (idk why) to find out that similarly spec-ed windows laptops pretty much cost the same.

    Looks like Macs make more sense as well-rounded laptops and Windows PCs as brute power desktops. Regardless of size/weight, the performance drop without wall-power makes gaming laptops essentially desktop replacements that you can easily move from one power outlet to another. That’s been my experience owning everything from MacBook Pros to portable gaming laptops to beefy thiccboi gaming laptops.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  2 роки тому +221

      Yep, although there is the issue of pricing. Windows laptops are still much cheaper, and I left that out in this video on purpose to really focus on the performance differences. For me the gaming is and will always be the deal-breaker for moving 100% to Macs. I have the 16" M1 Max for 95% of my daily work/usage, but will always need my RTX 3080 desktop PC for gaming (or a gaming laptop). If you don't game though...the M1 Max is an easy choice.

    Thank You! You are legitimately one of the first channels to properly compare the 3D rendering capabilities of Apple Silicon and Nvidia's GPUs. There are so many times when I see other UA-camrs use an older version of blender or CUDA instead of OptiX for Nvidia...there can be massive differences. A slight correction: at 7:12 you state that OptiX uses artificial intelligence to accelerate the rendering process but it is actually the ray tracing cores (something that Apple doesn't have) that do the bulk of the job. I also liked the comparison on battery as not many other channels do that. I hope you get more recognition for the work you put into your videos!

I saw this video a long time ago, so I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure the Mac ended up being able to do that on battery for 3x as long as the Windows laptop it was being compared to.

    As someone who has never owned a Mac, I recently found myself needing a laptop computer to complement my school and work-workflow (video and photo editing) that I typically do on my Windows desktop that is pretty beefy (3700x and 1080Ti w/ 32GB RAM). After much deliberation I decided on the Razer blade 14" with an RTX 3070. After severe disappointment since I felt like I was always forced to be plugged in to properly use it, I returned it. I recently received my Macbook Pro 14" with 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU and while I haven't had time to extensively test it (or just have heavier workloads on it), I am already much more happy with the general use experience and the battery life compared to the Razer Blade.

    I'm a big Apple person from way back.
    Working in IT my job is much easier if I'm using a Unix based OS which can emulate and seamlessly interoperate with Linux machines, while also having the ability to run Windows in a VM or as dual boot.
    That said, the big drawback to current Mac offerings is that for the most part they have taken away the ability to upgrade and troubleshoot.
    Everything like ram, CPU and SSD is soldered to the mainboard. This eliminates the possibility of mechanical stresses introducing a connection issue. But then you must buy the machine with the maximum configuration you will need down the road. You cannot buy a 16gb 512gb laptop and upgrade to 32gb and 1tb down the road.
    This also screws the pooch in terms of troubleshooting and in house support.
    When I was IT at a fully Mac ad agency we would quite often frankenstein several broken macs together to keep a user working. For example we would pull the ram from one and the boot drive from the users original computer and place them in a third while we sent their broken Mac to an Apple certified repair place to get the screen fixed.
    I've also done a lot of system troubleshooting on the cheese grater towers by swapping components back and forth to narrow down which subsystem was bottlenecking. On those you could replace CPUs, ram, disks and more.
    These days the Mac Pro tower has the system drives hardware encrypted to the mainboard they shipped with.
    If you are in a production environment and your Mac Pro craps the bed, you won't be able to yank those drives and put them in an adjacent machine and keep working.
    For this reason it behooves professionals using those machines to keep their work stored on a NAS or external RAID volume.

  • @MrPhange
    @MrPhange 2 роки тому +2

    The problem here is that you're comparing the highest-wattage laptop 3080 presumably to compare gaming frame rates, but then you're comparing power draw. That's not a fair comparison; GPU performance-per-watt is not linear. An 80w laptop 3080 is not half the performance of a 165w 3080. It's more like ~75% the performance - which is definitely significant when it comes to enjoying games, but would still outperform the FPS of the Macbook Pro's GPU at 4K by a noticeable margin. Likewise, Ryzen 5000-series CPUs are extremely power efficient as well, and you could throttle it downward with minimal gaming performance. You could almost certainly shave off at least 100w from the Lenovo's power draw and still significantly outperform the MBP's gaming frame rates.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  2 роки тому

      It is a fair comparison. Look at the GFX Bench gaming benchmark. They each achieve around the same results when using optimized APIs like Metal/Directx 12 etc, but the MacBook draws vastly less wattage.
      Besides, gaming is not a fair comparison for your comment. Macs and macOS are poorly optimized for gaming for many different reasons, some of which I showed in the video. Consider all the other areas e.g. video editing, After Effects, coding etc. All can be done at typically the same level of performance as the RTX laptop, but at significantly less wattage.

    Great video! I use a Windows laptop (Aero Gigabyte) for my 3D workflow, I do 3D animation. I used my laptop for commute and Zoom classes at home during college. I graduated recently and loved my laptop. Only frustrating thing with my laptop recently is that the fans sounded like grinding noises, despite me cleaning out dust from the fans. I had to do fan replacement and paid a repair but it's happening again (5 months apart) even though I got a laptop cooler to help get out any excess heat on my desk and hopefully makes my computer work less harder. One thing I loved about Apple is the battery as well as being able to keep working with the charger unplugged. I own an older Apple laptop (Macbook Air) back in high school (2017 model) and it still works great, I still use it for research, browsing the web, etc. plus I liked the fans weren't so loud, and build quality feels great with Apple. I wear noise canceling headphones but the grinding fans from my Windows laptop while rendering out a 3D animation can be annoying sometimes. I also love to do gaming on Windows laptop but I may have to bring my laptop in for repair again due to fan issues. It sucks especially since I have gotten into VR gaming and want to get a few games on Steam, plus I have been making more videos recently. I had to activate noise cancelling in backgrounds to reduce any fan noise but sometimes my microphone still picks it up. When the fans work properly on Windows laptop it does a great job, but recently the fans would halt to a stop or spin really fast which concerns me. It sometimes makes me wish the fans are more durable for my Windows laptop.
    I loved both Apple and Windows for either pros and cons. I've been considering building a home Windows computer so I can take advantage of more raw performance with bigger 3D scenes as I work (plus hopefully the heat will release more easily along with better fans). I always wanted to get a Macbook Pro laptop for portability and battery performance. I hope that Apple laptop will get more 3D support like Maya, Blender, etc. for faster 3D rendering. For now I've just been focused on saving up money.
    Great video! I loved seeing the comparison, everything is well organized. 👍

      Among the spectrum of proprietary systems it has a clear security focus however given they back port things from systems like HardenedBSD like mandatory access control and w^x. On privacy, being that you can disable SIP and go pretty deep in the OS since it is still just another UNIX system, it is actually possible to look at all base traffic unencrypted and if you disable iCloud the OS is actually quiet, even the iCloud traffic however is rather anonymised with your location queries for example split to a point where even mitm is a rather tedious endeavour.

If you want to do just about anything else and also be able to take your laptop into a meeting room and have the battery last longer than 30 mins and not sound like a jet engine the whole time, get the M1 Macbook Pro. Support for M1 GPU will increase quickly though but will never be like Xbox, PS or AMD/NVidia in terms of gaming, that's the reality, but it's not a problem for the M1/M2 Macs because that's not what they were made to do. One other note I will make is that the M series Macbook Pros are easily the best software development machines that money can buy. As a dev, nothing on the planet will beat these machines if your development workloads are support on M series silicon. Despite trying to be unbiased, I feel this review is very biased. For example if you are comparing power consumption during tomb raider, you should run both laptops at the same fps. The 3080 is working alot harder to create many more fps so naturally will use more power. The Mac being unable to reach the same fps, will use less power.

PC laptops will never catch up to Apple due to multiple different hardware vendors, amd, nvidia, intel, microsoft as the OS they dont work as good as Apple that makes from software to their very own silicon now.

Everyone has different needs, thus, apple and windows laptops serve different needs primarily. Apple offers a better unplugged experience (battery life, performance when unplugged, weight), while most windows gaming laptops offer more raw power for gaming at the expense of the unplugged experience while still having considerably more mobility than desktops, obviously. So your argument that "PC laptops" (which is a stupid term honestly since all laptops are PCs or Personal Computers) will never catch up to Apple is very ignorant and wrong. Would love to see software fully optimized for the exact hardware configuration of the windows laptop vs the fully optimized software for the mac. Understood the memory plays a massive role in these numbers, so get a laptop with fast memory for this task. But you can see that until someone specifically releases software that is written to work specifically with a MAC, it is slower. I am not saying it still isn't impressive. But I will never replace my main PC with a Mac with how restrictive and conditional they are.

    Thanks for the review!! As a Mac lover, I have some inherent bias, but you cannot discount the amazing power saving capacity of the new Apple chips. That shot with the voltmeter was very eyeopening. As a side note, I keep seeing in your vids (and many others) references to the fact that "software x" isn't yet optimized for Apple silicon. These kinds of statements suggest that the software will eventually be updated, but I cannot find any definitive answers on that. I'd love to see a video covering this - finding out if and when the major productivity software and game makers will make their products available to run natively on Apple silicon, but I know it would be extremely difficult to make such a video b/c I doubt many companies would share this information freely.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  2 роки тому +5

      It's impossible to say if and when certain software will be optimized. We've seen the beginnings of it though - DaVinci Resolve is now 100% optimized for Apple silicon, and Blender soon will be too, as Apple have sent their own engineers over to help. Remember that Apple silicon is, still, only just over 12 months old at this stage. I think in the next 2-3 years we will see massive changes, but for now the process is painfully slow.

OS X itself is a Unix-like system with fully-featured terminal, POSIX and so on. Just install your favorite toolchain and you're good to go.
      Of course, there's WSL2 on Windows that make such things easer, but it will never be as smooth as having it all in the host OS already.

    One thing though, when you showed Total Power Draw from Wall with Tomb Raider 4K Benchmark, M1 Max is not 3x more efficient, it's just consuming less but giving you half the performance. If you want to compare efficiency you would have to cap somehow the fps in the Legion at what the M1 Max was getting and see how it was consuming then :)

      This is a very good point and honestly it makes the Macbook look better than it really is.
      Generally speaking, GPU performance per wattage is never linear - an 80w 3080 isn't 50% the performance of a 165w 3080. More like 75%-ish.
      In other words, you could probably shave ~100w off the Lenovo's power draw for CPU and GPU and still perform at least on par with the MBP in games, if not better.
