  • Apple’s new MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 are a triumphant success - they have excellent performance, stunning battery life, useful ports, and incredible displays. The only knock against them is you’re going to pay a lot for all that good stuff.

      The difference in battery life between the M1 Max and M1 Pros tested in this Verge video is marginal (just 30 minutes). Indeed, most other credible video reviews to date suggest the difference is minor.
      Yet, Nilay seizes on this minor discrepancy to argue that the Max chips are power-hungry compared to the Pro chips (even when not being used for graphics).
      This distortion of the relative battery performances will turn many buyers away from the Max - even though they may be better off with it.

    I feel like the gaming portion is very misleading. I agree with the statement that these are not gaming laptops and other laptops hit much higher frames. HOWEVER Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p highest settings and hitting 80+ fps is very playable and is even more impressive as it’s not running natively on Apple Silicon. This is a good sign and we should be encouraging game devs to start taking developing for Macs seriously.
    Do not buy these laptops for gaming, but if you do buy them, they’ll be far from a bad gaming experience. I think the displaying of comfortable frames in games should be a sign of what’s to come.

    • @jayg339
      @jayg339 2 роки тому +29

      Yeah that is what I was thinking. It’s not the sole reason to buy the laptop, but the fact that you are receiving a machine that has a great display, a high refresh rate and a capable GPU for medium to high gaming is actually really appealing for a lot of users.
      Most serious gamers don’t really use their laptop as their main gaming device, so having a Macbook that can reasonably game is a nice touch for someone who wanted MacOS, but also wanted to be able to game from time to time without having to buy a separate dedicated gaming laptop.

      The biggest issue with gaming is lack of compatibility compared to Windows, but all Macs suffer from that unfortunately. MacOS being such a small percentage of the gaming market combined with Apple’s tendency to deprecate software compatibility means that Macs are always going to be second class citizens in this area, sadly.
      Outside of live games, most video games are developed in a manner closer to film where the studio moves on to the next thing soon after release, so Apple basically forcing developers to continually update their software simply to keep it running on the latest MacOS release simply isn’t viable for most games, compared to productivity software with continuous revenue due to subscription fees.
      I can’t see that changing unless Apple starts spending big on Apple Arcade, like paying AAA studios to port over their games or just outright acquiring game studios like Microsoft.

      2. I have a big screen and can use that with my m1 no prob.. so really the only advantage I'm getting is when I'm using it in bed.

      5. Battery life was great on my m1 too.. don't have any high impedance headphones.

Your Senior Editor did a great job explaining her experience while using these new M1 chips and laptops. I was ready to sell my maxed out MBP 16 i9, but the prices went way downhill with the hype, so maybe I'll wait for the next gen before switching to Apple silicon. Yeah this review was spot on, and I appreciate how thorough it was. The conclusion on the M1 Max seems to be settling on: If you need to ask if you need it, you don't need it. That aside, I'm really glad to finally see a MacBook Pro lineup where getting the smaller one doesn't relegate you to lesser internals. Now you can get a total beast in a 14" or a 16" form-factor. The 14" with the M1 Pro is pretty much my dream laptop. I've always found the 13" disappointingly under-powered and the screen just a bit too small, but found the 15" and 16" way too big. I can't justify upgrading from my 2020 Intel 13" anytime soon, but damn I know what I have to look forward to.

    Thanks for a great review. Identifying the battery life difference between M1 Pro and Max was particularly insightful.
    @Nilay / @ Monica - I'm surprised the extra 16 GPU cores could drive a ~6 hour (40%!) battery life difference. How confident are you that this difference is mostly attributable to the power draw of the (presumably often idling) extra GPU cores, rather than reflecting differences in how you each used your assigned laptops? Is there any chance of you swapping models for another couple days of typical workload to confirm?
    Reviewing battery life is obviously as much an art as science, so don't want to nitpick. But would be good to sense check this somehow, given it's both a really important insight, and (at least to me) surprising in magnitude.

    The Verge has put so many people off the Max version and it has annoyed me a lot because they put me off too. I was going to cancel my Max order but then I did some research and found that they had TWO different people running the Pro and Max Models, which completely stuffs up the battery test because one person could be doing light internet browsing on the Pro model and the other doing massive edits on the Max Model with Premiere Pro. It pissed me off so much. They need to provide consistency between their battery tests or else you end up with mixed messages, the Max model has more GPU cores but when not in use (idle) they use up a marginal amount of power, this should have been stated more clearly.
