I know, right? Finally something other than “ooga booga Apple bad 😡” or “but unga bunga Apple best 😖”. Just a friendly comment section, instead of one that’s full of people just calling Apple products trash when half of them’ve never even used a Mac.

    • @Joel11111

Isn't the idea of "fanboyism" or "antifanboyism" sort of strange when you think about it? All these companies making computers make billions of dollars each year. Why should we invest our time and energy defending them relentlessly and trashing their competitors on their behalf? And why should we trash what brings other people enjoyment? These companies don't need it and it doesn't do us any good.

    • @gutzbin
      @gutzbin 2 роки тому +93

@@Joel11111 It’s definitely not defending the company as much as it is defending your own personal bias and opinion. You chose an Apple product, you like what Apple does. Someone insulting the company insults your personal taste, choice and bias, so the natural impulse is to defend the company in a dire attempt to defend your opinion. This becomes even worse when you buy one of their products, then someone goes and gives factual evidence as to why other products are much stronger and better at the same price. You, trying to convince yourself that the product you bought is the best and that there is no way you made a mistake or overlooked a detail, defend the product you bought to the grave.
However, people mistake “being a human being with an opinion” for fanboyism, and also mistake “giving actual evidence that something is better than another” as fanboysim
For example, I saw a comment talking about how the new Macbook Pro is overpriced, pretending that the price of the 8TB model (7000 dollars) is the base price (the base price is 3500 dollars by the way), which is quite literally just lying to prove their own personal bias that Apple is Evil incorporated. Then, when people A- Called them out on it, or B- explained how the Macbook Pro is quite literally better than most notebooks/ultrabooks in their class with perfect explanations and reasoning as to why, they were completely ignored and called Apple fanboys.
      The internet sucks ass.

@@svpracer98 it’s a bit worrying that Apple is becoming more and more hyper-focused on shipping products that are catered towards “creative professionals”. They even built in parts of the chip dedicated to accelerating certain media-production workloads on the M1 pro and max. These are entire blocks of the chip that are forever going to sit idle for anyone who doesn’t do media production. It used to be that they focused mainly on this market just on the software side of things, but now you can see this focus hard-coded into their silicon. Which makes me wonder, “okay, but what about everyone else who just prefers MacOS over Windows, apple”? Not everyone is a photographer, video editor, or music producer. It’s a shame they don’t make an effort to branch out into more markets.

When it comes to the notch thing, I think it's pretty dumb overall but I do think it's better than the iPhone one. It should have had FaceID but what they've done here is extend the display up a little bit on either side of a notch - so you actually GAIN screen real estate by pushing the menu bar up, even if cutting chunks out of displays is kind of a clunky solution to shrinking bezels.
The Iphone, however, has the notching cutting INTO the rest of the screen with the status bar being stretched to take up the space. Other phones have the display right to the edge, so it's much more of a negative impact than this (although more useful).
Also, I'm pretty sure Apple has the system treat the display as though there is no notch for similar reasons Windows ignores the rounded corners - first, it means they don't need to do any software work and, particularly, there's no risk of needed multiple versions for displays with/without a notch (avoiding it would look super weird if your MacBook doesn't have one).
Second, I feel like compatibility could be a factor, I don't know for sure but I suspect some apps wouldn't adapt to rounded corners or the notch properly - either they'd leave a gap across that whole top piece, shrink themselves to fit into the smaller rectangle of the rounded screen or maybe send important elements off the useable space - and again could mean needing extra code to handle the changing screens.
It's dumb, but I can't really see a better implementation. But it NEEDS FaceID to justify its existence

I thought a watt hour was the watts the battery could deliver in 1 hour at full speed energy delivery.
So a 100 Wh battery could deliver 100 watts for the entirety of 1 hour.
That battery would be able to power a 100 watt incandescent light bulb for 1 hour.
Of course the laptop wouldn't suck 100 watts during 1 hour and that is why it is able to last for more than 1 hour.

If there was demand I could see them working with game developers like they do with pro apps so that on launch many apps are already optimized for M1. However, almost nobody buys a Mac specially to game. This is like the chicken and egg problem.
Game developers need gamers on the platform to justify optimizing games for Mac like they do with other platforms. But gamers need games to switch too MacOS. The Mac community, Apple, & game developers have all given up on the idea. Most of the community will even say things "if you want to game buy a PC, we do really work here" and Apple doesn't really care about "gamers" because the gaming community doesn't align with Apples values and decisions and game developers dont see a big enough incentive to spend time and money on the MacOS platform.
Honestly, I use to be big into gaming, got a Mac for development. Hardly game anymore and I see myself falling into that attitude. If you want to game just buy a PC, dont bring the gaming community to Mac because their demands with just push Apple to ruin a great product. What gamers want hardly line up with what professionals want, performance is the only place they over lap & even then when professionals talk about performance they mean like the dedicated encoder and decoder on the chip for pro-res.
Windows and gamers fit well together and I think it should stay that way.

Basically all laptops use Magnesium which is incredibly brittle. I've only seen a couple of laptops in my entire career do it a different way and that means they don't break. Either way I'm more concerned about how little the screen is able to extend downward, it just causes them to break a lot. Probably the 2nd most common repair on Macbooks are the hinges. First would be a tie between the Magsafe connector and the charger fraying. I’d say if more developers jumped on this bandwagon and made properly optimized native M1 versions that squeeze every last bit of performance, like they do for Xbox or PlayStation, then these new Macs could make decent or even excellent gaming computers.

If you're plugging things in all the time though, that's a solid usecase, and those have been mentioned here - embedded hardware devs, people with video drones and stuff. Even people who 3D print, though that's kind of a temporary thing for most i guess before putting a Pi-based wireless spooler on their printer.
Like for sure more connectivity is always better, but the space is limited, so if you aren't using the port a lot, wouldn't you rather instead have a port that you do use a lot or can't replace with a simple USB device?

@@piobu5357 Most people will find an SD-Card reader or 3 or 5 if they just rummage in their stuff. Most USB-C hub manufacturers just chuck one into the end of the hub, that's nice as well, and not quite as easy to lose. I think having an SD-Card port on the machine is nice, but to be kept in mind that these computers specifically in this video are somewhat minituarised and slimmed down and densely packed, space actually is an issue.
What ports one may wish for instead? Maybe more USB. I don't think you can combine alt modes, once a USB port is dedicated as a display output (displayport alt mode via USB-C socket), you can't have actual USB connectivity on it, can you? So if you max out the display connections on this one, you cannot connect any more peripherals, if that's the case.

@@SianaGearz see, I don't have a USB SD card reader lying around, and I don't know anyone that does - maybe someone like a pro photographer would have a bunch of them (or someone that's been living in Apple's port-less ecosystem for years), but an average Joe probably won't. I do have some old USB 1.0 pendrive-like MicroSD reader, but that wouldn't help me with the full size SD card I needed to access recently.
A 'Pro' designation, or Pro Max even, should indicate that a professional can use it out-of-the-box, and that would be hard to do with the last year's 2-thunderbolt Mbooks - you can't even plug in a normal USB-A pendrive to them, and that's a common real world use case (something I do a few times a week at work). This year's models are a definite improvement in that regard, and everyone's been raving about the reintroduction of ports in the reviews. Finally a product I can recommend.
