I'm in a very unfortunate situation and have to use a windows machine at work eight hours a day and therefore have witnessed everything. That's what I think anyway, but then new shenanigans start presenting themselves. My M1 mac is older and cheaper than the Lenovo at work, but feels like witchcraft compared to any windows laptop I've touched.

I totally respect his opinion about MacOS vs Windows but I don't know what he used to do with Windows to have these bugs, I have been using Windows 11 ever since it officially came out and never had a single one of those bugs, and my Windows laptop is like 3 years old with no dedicated GPU, I still like how MAC OS integrated into Apple eco system though but I like Windows more.

I absolutely hate that thing. I figured out how to make the animation basically zero but even so, I like to jump between virtual desktops and it takes a noticeable amount of time for the software to transition to a new desktop. Like if I pause a youtube video in one desktop and then jump to the adjacent desktop and type something, the computer thinks I am still on the previous desktop for half a second or so and it will unpause the youtube video.
It would be nice to also have an option for the full screen to open on the next desktop not the LAST desktop

This is proven by the fact that UA-camrs still celebrate the Dell XPS line, which is absolute trash through and trough. They might feel good for a week and they might work well for a month and they might not overheat every 30 mins, but the reviewers simply dont care. Its all about the exterior now. OOOH glas trackpad, OOOH CNC Aluminimum, OOOH speakers sound good.....
Like the fact that UA-camrs still blame the CPUs for power consumption, when its the damn Laptop manufacturers terrible motherboard design and troglodite programming with their software. The only one where the motherboard and the software worked perfectly was when I had a razer notebook. The Intel 12th gen CPU would draw 10W under general load and under 3W at idle. This is possible with higher power Intel CPUs too. But then comes the motherboard. the razer one was using 1-2W, I had an Asus notebook where the motherboard alone used 30W+.
Since the Laptop manufacturers have a say in how the CPU behaves, I have no hope. Apple can actually manage the CPUs they know better than some HP fool ever would.

I'm a massive PC and Android guy who, like you, tinkered with every setting and customized almost everything. As I aged (32 now), I began to appreciate the minimalistic and simplistic way Apple do things (iOS and MacOS). The integration and quality is just stunning. Resale value is top-notch. Yes, in my experience tho, MacOS and iOS sometimes can't do all the things tech-savvy guys do (we have Windows and Android for that) but for the everyday things that we actually do - Apple excels. Finally, I get it after using Apple gadgets for 4 years now, it is the polished experience. Note: the transition did take a bit of time (and third-party apps lol) even for a self-proclaimed Windows/Android power user like me. All the little differences and nuances of MacOS from Windows but it was fun. I like the consistency in design language and quality. The simplistic magical integration of iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and Airpods is not just an overstatement like the old Apple hater argue all the time in past. It's actually nice. PS - I've been in the Android vs iOS and Windows vs MacOS debate scene for more than a decade (I almost always laughed at these overpriced Apple products) and believe me, most hate content is just out there for clicks and views. Actually experiencing the "Apple way" has its weight. I still use my Android phones and beefy PC mostly for the hacky things and mostly gaming now. Ciao.

I have basically the same M1 laptop for a little over 2.5 years now and I mostly agree with the review. I actually game on it almost daily without issues. Stuff like Minecraft, Terraria, Factorio, Path of Exile (on Wine) or even more demanding games such as Anno 1800 run very well. It's always a matter of tinkering with it a little to get everything going properly but it's surprisingly powerful. WIsh more games would natively support it though.
My experience with Finder was... not as great as yours. Network mounts on Finder are sooo incredibly slow and I really prefer the way File Explorer works. Maybe it's more buggy in Windows 11, never tried it.
Since you're worried about durability: one tip to prolong the life of the Macbook's SSD is to keep a good portion of it empty. The more space you're using, the more that wear is distributed across fewer flash cells.

      @MrAljosav 2 місяці тому +1

Apart from the full screen issue, the only other issue with Apple’s window management is window snapping half screen, quarter screen etc. This is probably the most frustrating and most common complaint all macOS users have.
The reason why Apple couldn’t implement it until macOS 15 Sequoia is because Microsoft patented window snapping for 10-15 years which recently expired. So Apple was hamstrung by Microsoft in not being able to provide it earlier.
Now, you may be asking then why did Linux have it before macOS? Well that’s to do with the fact there’s so many distros and the open source nature of Linux makes it unlikely Microsoft would be able to get much for patent infringement, so it’s not worth the cost of going to court to chase the many Linux distros for the little money they already make from users.
If however Apple introduced it earlier, you can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft would be suing Apple for every penny they can

it could be one of those things when you are used to something and stop noticing until it is suddenly not there (Windows -> MacOS), for touchpad use there's an app called MiddleClick, for when on mouse - can't recall, I use Logitech MX Master 3S and middle click just works there (probably via native Logi Options+ app). External mice - downside is I couldn't get the scrolling be as good as when scrolling on a touchpad. So touchpad - best scrolling on 120Hz display, then Apple Magic Trackpad (smoothness is very close to touchpad) and the rest of what I've tried is meh. Noticeable if the same mouse is used on Windows with 144Hz display.

The slowest way to switch desktops with the longest delay is swiping with the trackpad, a slightly faster way is using Ctrl + Arrow Keys, but the fastest way with the least amount of animation lag is picking the desktop you want and switching to it directly. So if you're on desktop 1 and want to go to desktop 3 use Ctrl + 3. This has the quickest transition and shortest delay

I love Macs. During my exchange year at a high school in the US, I was able to use an M1 MacBook Air. Although I really enjoyed using it, Apple has unfortunately broken their accessibility for blind people like me.
macOS, like any other Apple product, has an accessibility feature called VoiceOver, which allows totally blind people to use the computer. It has many features, and it is incredibly fast. However, it has one major flaw: issues with web navigation. Screen readers on Windows, like NVDA, JAWS, or even Narrator, provide a much better experience. I'm a tech guy and have used Linux, Windows, and macOS. Windows seems to be the best option for people like me.
Another problem with any operating system besides Windows is the lack of alternative screen reader solutions for the blind. On Windows, we have three or more screen readers to choose from.
But if I were sighted, there’s no way I would use Windows again. I hate Microsoft.

I hate the downgrade in productivity mac os is bringing to the table. I work with it and I cannot switch to a windows laptop. I dont understand why when you swipe with 3 fingers the windows are always at a different place. I hate this thing with two instances of same app. So many small things that are so 180 degrees than what you would want it to be, and then you go on reddit and ask stuff and people who spent $2600 on this machine getting all sad that they did, and tell you how wrong you are. If I am wrong, why are there so, so so so many 3rd party apps, only a handful are free, to fix the issues mac os has? Gee, I wonder why. Well, maybe I am wrong like reddit fanboys claim.
    EDIT:
The MX Master is perfect. but on a Mac? I have tried every post and solution to it. and I mean EVERY. still has lag and horrible refresh rate (both visually and tracking). Hook it up to a 15 year old thinkpad? PERFECT. putting it again on my M3 machine? Like I am using a rock table. Hate mac.

Yeah, the thing with the MX Master and other mice is so dumb, and is a good example of how Apple kneecaps anything not made by them or in partnership with them by not doing anything to support standards or like intentionally disabling smooth scrolling for any non apple mouse. I really like their hardware and the M series chips have been really cool, but their software is most of the time so backwards and frustrating compared to Linux or Windows, and their overall behavior toward anything non-Apple just feels childish.

Only reason I might upgrade it at this point is whenever the M5 Pros or something roll around and I can get a significant performance upgrade in supported games and when I use Unreal on it.

This is not a fair comparison as you are comparing a Macbook to a self-assembled Windows PC. Why? Because a Macbook is designed from the ground up with components that are made for each other and tested throughly before being released in the market w.r.t compatibility of their internal components as well as software. None of that is the case with a randomly assembled Windows PC. I have assembled several PCs and issues like the ones you mentioned are typical in systems put together without enough research on compatibility of the parts. A fair comparison would have been a Thinkpad with a Macbook. I have been using Thinkpads with Windows since the last 17 or so years and I have never had any of the 'Windows bugs and issues' that you talk about. Thinkpads are rock solid, smooth, fast, extremely reliable and just go on and on.
I use both Windows and Mac (have an M3 Macbook Pro bought in 2024 and a Thinkpad P70 bought in 2015) and I like Macbooks M3 processor but do not like the MacOS at all for it's terrible and archaic Window management, its WYSIWYG font rendering (as opposed to Window's Cleartype) and horrendous GUI user experience. Everything takes way more clicks and key presses on the MacOS (ex. see this - www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/12g0p6y/comment/lp653k0/?).
I also have Fedora 40 with KDE Plasma running on another Thinkpad and it's just amazing in terms of GUI, Windows Management and navigation.

Windows uncontrollable updates once ruined a huge contract because the director wasn’t able to print a contract which he saved on his desktop and his computer suddenly felt like installing an update.
He is using a mac ever since and I’m also switched the next day after the accident.

    • @philipppuchner1115

I NEVER had an uncontrollable Windows Update my entire life.
But I also don't let Windows run over night.
Right now on Windows 11 I do.
      NEVER had a restart.
Also, If you have some sort of patch management within a program in your company, this program does this and Windows Updates don't start on themself.
The "forced" updates and "forced" restarts happen to those who NEVER patch their systems and NEVER restart their systems, no matter how often ask because of a pending update.
And to avoid having unpatched and therefore more infected systems, larger botnets etc, MS decided to force ppl to Update and restart. And if you don't want to, you can pause Windows Updates for up to 3 weeks. And when having a managed software (like it should be in companies), the admins decide when to roll out Windows Updates and when not to.
And also THEN, YOU decide when to restart your Windows Computer. but after some time (DAYS) have passed, maybe Microsoft forces the restart because of pensing updates - i don't know. But then it is because of those morons who ignore every warning, message etc and never install updates or restart and just click "x" whenever anything pops up.

Like you’re stupid child and you can’t decide for yourself and take the responsibility for your actions.
Yeah, if I delay the updates too long, MY computer will probably get infected or something. So what? This is my property, not microsoft’s. They act like they own your computer.
On Mac updates are displayed as a notification and you decide when to install it. Security updates can be configured to install automatically.

@@epicmap Oh, that's unfortunate. Then it was badly managed and not individualised.
For the following statement: I'am with you.
But look at MS: Why do you think they did it? Fore people into installing Updates and making disabling Updates impossible?
Too many unpatched systems. Too many botnets. Too many by criminals controlled systems for a lot of different reasons (despite spam, spyware, phishing etc servers).
That had to get better, otherwise it would have made Windows the unsafest OS in the world.
Or maybe also national security agencies have an interest in not loosing the cyberwar against too many highjacked devices?
I mean, the more remote controlled devices, the more raw power there is for exampe DDOS attacks. And those super simple attacks are very effective in making servers and the services on those inaccessible to the whole world!
When did it happen that for ca 2 weeks a whole country was dead? Also the bank servers, so people didn't get any money, couldn't pay anything, making no transaction?
Something like this could have catastrophic effects.
Windows is the most used OS on any devices connected to the internet by far. And there are also the oldest and unsafest versions online (compared to smartphones, which get replaced more often as the old windows computer or laptop - but it may change).
Just hating MS for their decision to force people a little bit to update and restart regularly is generally for >99% or the time and people a good time.
If a company policy makes the laptop shutdown and restart during a presentation, well, if the device is managed, then the fault is with the management of that software.
If the other OS is also managed, then what difference does the OS make?
Or is it just, that the way that this windows laptop was managed is not possible in the same exact way in macOS, and therefore, the boss said well IT guys, fk it, you don't get me here.
      ...
So, if no group policy would have triggered, if the Laptop would have been unmanaged like any other device, it wouldn't have happened.
That is what i get out of this.
