No autotune ,no backing tracks, no nothing but 4 guys that know what they're doing and invented a genre of music. They are the architects of metal. The Godfathers of Metal.
It's also worth noting that when the first few Sabbath albums were released, they were pretty much the heaviest music anybody had ever heard at the time. And it still holds up today.
Hey Polo, man I saw Sabbath live in 1976, one of my best musical experiences of all time, Ozzy was an off the charts front man, Tony Iommi the riff master, Geezer Butler on bass and Bill Ward on drums. This band has influenced the masses for over 6 decades.Glad to see you appreciate their music!
1968 was the year that saw the formation of three bands: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Together, they are regarded as the fathers of heavy metal/hard rock. Fairies sounded just as good on vinyl. Time for some Deep Purple, Polo. 🔥🤘
Hand of Doom studio version is a Must. Deep lyrics, heavy bass , killer groove and multiple tempo changes that synchronize with the lyrics. The song is about the downward spiral of heroin addiction brought on by the horrors of the Vietnam war. It’s DEEP.
Every B/S song will be you favorite after you listen. Thanks for the reaction. glad you can listen to the birth of metal. Don't know what we would have done without them.😃
Many years ago I saw Ozzy at LaGuardia Airport I walked up to him said hi Ozzy I'm going to see at your concert in a few days. I asked him for an autograph he obliged and was very pleasant. He has always been one of my favorite old school rockers. He's a legend.
The studio version is almost exactly like this. Black Sabbath put on one hell of a show, I’ve heard the pleasure of seeing them 3 times. Best part is everyone in the crowd knows all the lyrics so the whole crowd sings along with Ozzy. War Pigs live is mind blowing.
Much like nearly all metal bands that followed in their footsteps, I got into metal after hearing Black Sabbath for the first time. I was in fifth grade, the song was Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and I have not looked back. Best thing that ever happened to my musical tastes. That jazz fusion rhythm of Ward and Butler is unlike anything else you will hear.
There were bands before and during sabbath that were underground that sounded like them. That laid the groundwork or footwork footsteps for “metal” and then eventually extreme metal and it’s genres, sub/genres and micro genres. Sabbath weren’t the first. These underground bands and Sabbath accidentally created metal by the way. They didn’t refer to the devil to be edgy or shocking or to piss people off especially Christians. It was metaphorical and symbolic. As well as how much paid to crossroads Robert Johnson which even him as a blues musician didn’t even mention the devil / “The devil at the crossroads” to be shocking and
I really was lucky enough to be born and bred in Birmingham (England)and a youngster when Sabbath started off.... they completely set the tone for metal bands for evermore.....there was nothing or nobody like them. I saw them loads of times and I swear I've never seen anyone hit the drums so hard as Bill did. Ozzy is quite a comic personality nowadays but back then he was a genuine rocker living the dream.......Great stuff. Real genuine Heavy Metal standard 👌 It was a great time to be a "brummie "
Also a Brummie, although a couple of years behind you, Birmingham and the West Midlands was the engine room of British music, such innovation and sometimes ignored in favour of London and Merseyside. I am just old enough to remember the noise from factories that inspired Sabbath's sound though.
@@markferrett700 I'm South Birmingham originally, now in rural Worcestershire, not far from the Bonham's farm, sometimes see Mr Plant out walking his dogs, when he's back in the Midlands.
Notice how the guitarists (Tony Iommi) finger tips looked strange? They're prosthetic. He lost some of his fingertips in a factory accident ...and still plays like that.
My husband and I had a horror themed wedding and used Black Sabbath' song Black Sabbath as our wedding March. I definitely recommend listening to that one. Ozzy is still kicking butt and taking names. His latest albums are just as good as the stuff done in his younger days.
Aww, baby Ozzy! He was so young here. I've never seen this live performance but I can tell you it's almost note for note like the studio version. Most impressive. Thanks Polo, I really enjoy your calm and considered reactions and you're picking great music 🎶.
One more note, did you notice Tony Iommi's bandaged fingers on his right hand? He had a factory accident a few years previous and lost those two fingertips. Made a few changes to his guitar tuning and strings, and changed the sound of heavy metal forever.
He worked in a factory and on the last day, when he quit to become a musician, caught his hand in the metal press and lost the ends, he initially made his own finger ends by melting a fairy liquid bottle and letting it form over his fingers!
And when we as an audience were watching live, we wanted them to do good. We would give them the love and energy to be great, and we all had so much fun. They loved their music as much as we did. It was a closeness that you do not see today.
Black Sabbath was my very first concert. Paranoid had recently been released. That was a lot to take in for a 16 year old in 1970. They rocked the place.
What makes this song so epic isn't just the music, but the story behind it. Ozzy & Co got jumped in an alley while on tour, calling Ozzy a whole bunch of names and mugging him, so Ozzy wrote this song as a form of revenge.
Probably the best bass player in rock ,and i just love the way Bill ward attacks those skins ,alng with the riff master Tony Iommi and those unique vocals by Ozzy .
Nice shot of the end caps on Toni Iommi's severed fingertips. Sabbath had a lot of bluesy songs - their original plan was to be a blues band called 'Earth'. They weren't drawing the crowds that they would have liked, and one day they saw a line of people strung around the block waiting to get into the Boris Karloff scary movie 'Black Sabbath'. They decided to make 'scary music', changed their name to 'Black Sabbath', invented heavy metal, and the rest is history.
You are thinning barriers between people whether you know it or not, and I will forever appreciate that about you and others who react to music they may be unfamiliar with. We don’t celebrate our similarities enough
the first 4 black sabbath albums are must listens and must haves. this is rock and roll at its peak. The only others to come close are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and a few others...but to me...early Sabbath is peak cool. Its a vibe.
Took me back to the day when bands would stack their gear up on a stage in a hall somewhere, and the guys would turn up in their most comfortable day clothes to perform.
The one thing that has ALWAYS amazed me after ALL the reactions and probably 40 years of listening to this song is the fact that NO ONE, NOT ONE PERSON has ever commented or questioned that he was walking home late one night and walked up to someone's house and peeped in the window. Hilarious. What ? That's what Ozzy does man. God bless the prince of darkness. Seen him 4 times live. Including Randy Rhodes last show I believe. I know he passed about 2 weeks after we saw him. Ozzy always leaves everything on the stage. Never takes anything home. He loves his fans as much as we love him.
ooh I haven't heard this in a long time, thanks for reminding me. Speaking of bass, you should see Cliff Burton play ride the lightning live (metallica) incredible. *actually I meant For whom the Bell tolls. Ride the lightning is great too though.
Polo. It is truly entertaining to see you respond to some of the favorite tunes from my life. Thank you for your honesty and heartfelt responses. Very enjoyable!
This is Black Sabbath! Yes! I’m a huge fan, the first heavy metal band I had ever heard. From the first listen I was hooked, that was around 1970 I believe.
There were some great shots of Iomi’s fake fingertips in this one. It’s what gave him his signature sound. Those pull-offs are uniquely him. Love this sone, one of my favorites of theirs…and yes, the studio version is 🔥 too.
Another powerful 3 man rock band, with an added lead singer (who can play harmonica). So well done and rockin your ass off. They changed rock and introduced metal to the world. Geezer Butler is a phenomenal bassist, inventive, solid and with strong bass lines. Sadly they are one of the bands back then I never got to see perform, and I was a big fan of their music. And yes, many of us were tripping and smoking and listening to Sabbath. LOL
Can see towards the end of the video, guitarist Tony Iommi had his 2 right hand middle finder tips smashed off in an industrial machining accident, he would melt plastic and tape his fingers since he essentially lost feeling in those finger tips, he started playing lighter gauge guitar strings and started tuning his guitar down from standard E tuning, that was kind of the nexus of metal guitarists de-tuning their guitars for a that heavier, doomier guitar tone
“If” you go down this rabbit hole pay attention to the fact that there is only 3 instruments. Bass lead guitar and drums. They created such a overwhelming sound you would think there was six or eight ppl playing.
Fantastic. This is music I grew up with (I'm 61). Sabbath was my favorite band for a while, there (Zeppelin is my all-time favorite, right up there with Tool). These guys have been accredited as the original metal band, you know? This is off their second album, the wildly popular Paranoid.
Black Sabbath recommendations: Planet Caravan and Changes. Definitely different from the "devil rock" that you would expect from Sabbath and is more like the Psychedelic British music like "The Pink Floyd" who is Pink Floyd but with its original singer.
I found black sabbath in my late teens, the music, then the sound of Ozzys voice and the power behind it, I was hooked, more like obsessed. I couldn't watch the Osbornes on TV. I felt like they were exploiting my dad ,making fun of my family. Lol I'm in my 40's went and seen ozzy in concert in Ohio like 2 years ago, still rocken. People of all ages were there. If you want to read a good book " I am Ozzy" it was my Bible for a bit. Lol glad I found this video, sorry for venting my obsession. Much love

I listen to everything I can get my hands on since 1980 and they are still the at the top for me.
Yeah, and I am a rarity: I REALLY like Tony Martin's songs/vocals.

Godfather of all heavy guitar mr T Iommi legend 👌👌
And missing the tips of 2 of his fretting fingers and using sewing thimbles to extend them. Just a radical player, man.
It just blows every damn thing away..period
