In the mid 2000s they asked him what the song is about in an interview he said honestly I don’t remember at all. God bless ozzy. Also a gnome in tactical boots? Lmao lex
I also heard the story that they were walking back to their B&B after a gig in Workington, Cumbria, and the road they were walking on was a tad higher than the houses running alongside. Like WLS from Chicago who in 1970 was still playing the Archie's Sugar,Sugar. The songs on AM were upbeat and less than 3 minutes long. Music was changing, with Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin putting a twist on rock no one had heard. Zep more towards the bluesy mystical rock, while Black Sabbath towards a darker more metal sound. You could only hear them on underground FM stations where the DJ's were half-stoned and would flip on and play a whole album side. I think after a couple of listens, you come to appreciate the bass and drum work on this, can pass you by when you're first trying to get a handle on the overall song. My next few Sabbath choices for you guys would be Symptom of the Universe, Snowblind, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Symptom especially has one of those mellow outros you like so much Lex.
Geezer Butler the bassist was the one that wrote must of the songs tho, Ozzy only sang it, also the bat incident was when Ozzy was very high and thought that the bat was a toy lol, He got into coke and hard drinking when Randy Rhodes died, there's when he got his nickname Prince of Darkness lol 🤘
Funny story about this song is back in the day before stardom Sabbath had some trouble with some local Skinheads that hated their long hippy hair styles. So skinhead dudes usually wear combat boots and that's the story. Fairies Wear Boots are the skinheads. Another funny story or joke is that Geezer Butler's mom called and asked them tell him to turn his bass guitar down because it's too loud. They were in New York and mom was in England. What I enjoy about this band is that their sound has a blues element with Tony Iommi on lead guitar
Love Black Sabbath with Ozzie. They are very blues oriented. I love blues and jazz. Must be the southern boy in me. There are no bad Sabbath songs with Ozzie. No doubt it was some psychedelic influence here. Brad i love how stoic you are and Lex is always ready to JAM. Enjoy
The story is true, at a show in 1982 in Des Moines Iowa, Ozzy bit the head off a bat. Apparently he was unaware the bat was real. Believing it to be something thrown on stage by a fan, and thinking it would be funny rip up this rubber bat someone threw at him, so he bit the head off, turns out it was a real bat, whoops.
This song is a combination. Yes, a bit psychedelic but it is also based on an experience the members had with a run-in with skinheads after a show, wearing of course, combat boots, which is being made light of here. Tony Iommi was actually injured in that run-in and the next show had to be cancelled. One of my favorite Sabbath tunes, so hopefully it will grow on you a bit!
I just get the feeling that during every instrumental part Brad is thinking "this is boring, get back to the words so I have something to read and not just stare at the screen like a zombie".
This is my favorite song of allllll time. So glad to see POC getting into Black Sabbath. They take a lot their inspiration from blues artists and other genres and I love it

The "faires wearing boots" are actually the skinheads who used to try and beat black sabbath up. They had a running battle with sabbath. So the song is actually about skinheads and drugs.
I remember seeing the northern lights while walking home as a teen in Seattle. I wasn't listening to this song but I always associate it with that experience. I Got home and pulled my parents/sister outside to see it.
"I looked out a window..." Ozzy is talking about "window-pane acid" from back then (1970's). While on acid, Ozzy saw some skin-heads ( shaved-head racists that usually wore big boots - possibly Doc Martins) thus FAIRIES wear boots. It is a knock the on the racist skin-heads of the time. BTW Ozzy was a true showman - thus the biting heads off bats was for show - all press is good press as they say - it made him famous. Also - when ever you see any drawings of fairies, elves and the such, they always have boots on.....hmmm.

I'm aging myself here. First piece of music I owned was paranoid the album this song is from on 8 track tape. I currently now own it in vinyl and cd. This song is my favorite Black Sabbath song.
Ozzy said that everybody thought that "the Bat" was a PR gag but he said people would throw things on stage alot back then and when somebody threw the "the Bat" on stage at him, he picked it up an bite it's head off, thinking it was a rubber toy bat. He had to go and get Rabbie shots from the whole deal also.
This song is off from the 2nd album, Paranoid , the story behind the song is about kids trying to dress up like skinheads with those boots or something like that. But , the whole groove of the song is so freakin good and tight as a drummer, it’s really fun to play!
Geezer, the bassist, said they were walking along one night and passed by a house party, where a group of skin heads wearing combat boots were on the porch. They thought they looked and behaved like clowns, and that was the inspiration for Fairies Wear Boots.
One of my favorite bands of all time. They round out my top five with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Judas Priest, Clutch, and Metallica being the other 4. Can never go wrong reacting to any of them. Peace and love.

Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener on the other hand has a outro that gets wicked and is best played at full volume.
General rule you NEVER mess with the fae, boots or not.
Black Sabbath is a jazzy blues band with great riffs from Tony Iommeon guitar Geezer Butler on bass ,Bill Ward doing crazy drums, and Ozzy on vocals
This is proof that sabbath can sing about anything and it will still sound great
Geezer Butler the bassist was the one that wrote must of the songs tho, Ozzy only sang it, also the bat incident was when Ozzy was very high and thought that the bat was a toy lol, He got into coke and hard drinking when Randy Rhodes died, there's when he got his nickname Prince of Darkness lol 🤘
"It's a little bit dark" (Lex). Well, they are called BLACK SABBATH! If you're expecting flowers and kittens you've come to the wrong place.
I watch Sabbath Live, since the 70ès and Ozzy Was There! This Has Always been My Favorite Sabbath Tune......BY FAR!
Even Better Live!
This song was actually talking about Ozzy's run in with skin heads. Who commonly wore army boots. He's essentially calling skin heads fairies.
I just get the feeling that during every instrumental part Brad is thinking "this is boring, get back to the words so I have something to read and not just stare at the screen like a zombie".
This is my favorite song of allllll time. So glad to see POC getting into Black Sabbath. They take a lot their inspiration from blues artists and other genres and I love it
Jesus Murphy Brad nails one!
And Bill Ward is unf'nbelievable here.
This whole album is Ward's finest hour.
If Master of Reality is the textbook "Riff" album then this is where Metal "Swings".
Bill Ward is the most underrated drummer in rock. What a great band
Your reviews are fantastic! You both have an excellent ear for music. Love your take on these classics.
lol, this is going to rock your socks! Going to watch now and hope you love it!
Brad: it could be a barefoot fairy!
It could be a Barefoot fairy..🤣😂😂
Great reaction & review you two!...👍👍
The name "Black Sabbath: says it all! In other words its the Dark Rest! They are the original deep, dark, heavy, Heavt metal band. Guys if you like this you should also explore the band Deep Purple!
jazz influence on this track- bill ward s drums were known for that
The groove of this tune is rather infectious...
1970... When Metal Started... The godfathers, Black Sabbath!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
First ever real Heavy Metal Band and a game changer in style of music for the times! Look up what was popular when these guys cranked out the raw, gritty first album Black Sabbath!
Smoking and Tripping is all that you do. IT's the 70' s so yea man, its a vibe. The music was new and so was life. 427 69 SS Chevelle, 525 solid lift cam, Edle Brock High Rise intake manifold, 850 Holly carb, 11.5 to 1 TRW pistons, 4 on the floor.
The bat thing is true but he didn't know it was a real bat someone threw it on stage he thought it was a toy and he bit into it
The "faires wearing boots" are actually the skinheads who used to try and beat black sabbath up. They had a running battle with sabbath. So the song is actually about skinheads and drugs.
I remember seeing the northern lights while walking home as a teen in Seattle. I wasn't listening to this song but I always associate it with that experience. I Got home and pulled my parents/sister outside to see it.
5 decades rocking. The original rockers of 70s the most authentic band of rock n roll
"It could be a barefoot fairy, don't matter, how else could you see that"
😂🤣😂🤣❤️👍
🍄🍄
a lot of their first albums has songs leading into eachother, picking & choosing songs you can miss out
"I looked out a window..." Ozzy is talking about "window-pane acid" from back then (1970's).
Brads tell, looking confused & reaching for the pause 🤣 when the answer to his question is usually coming right up 😄 The impatience of the instant gratification culture✌☮
this was one of my favorite albums of the time. every song on it was great. another of my favorites from the period was Mountain - Flowers of Evil. some great songs to check out on there, including the title song, Flowers of Evil
Birmingham Boys.
Pioneers of Metal.
The Mic placements and Production on the Drums for 1970 was ground breaking.
Early Sabbath is great , way before their time , this was VARY heavy in the 70's , takes me to my musical roots in my early teens . . . the 70's rocked . . .
Memories of driving from San Bernardino to Newport Beach in my cousins (RIP) 65 impala with Black Sabbath in the tape deck. We also had Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. They both died way too young. One in a fire the other of flesh eating bacteria. Thank You for this one.
Probably my favorite Sabbath song
yeah agreed
I'm aging myself here. First piece of music I owned was paranoid the album this song is from on 8 track tape. I currently now own it in vinyl and cd.
This song is my favorite Black Sabbath song.
Ozzy-Flying High Again and Bark at the Moon. You will love the solos.
My favorite Black Sabbath song. You’ve got to dip into Ozzy’s solo career, too. Crazy Train is a must.
Thankfully they've already gotten started and reacted to Mr Crowley this past Halloween
@@mikethemotormouth Not by Ozzy, though.
@@SigRho1429 say what now?
@@mikethemotormouth Ozzy basically covered himself when he went solo. So, there are Black Sabbath versions and Ozzy versions.
@@TheRealMirCat Ozzy wrote Mr Crowley for Blizzard of Ozz post-Sabbath. How did Ozzy record it with Sabbath before then?
Ozzy said that everybody thought that "the Bat" was a PR gag but he said people would throw things on stage alot back then and when somebody threw the "the Bat" on stage at him, he picked it up an bite it's head off, thinking it was a rubber toy bat. He had to go and get Rabbie shots from the whole deal also.
You can never go wrong with Black Sabbath. That’s all I have to say.
This song is off from the 2nd album, Paranoid , the story behind the song is about kids trying to dress up like skinheads with those boots or something like that. But , the whole groove of the song is so freakin good and tight as a drummer, it’s really fun to play!
The perfect blend of blues & heavy ❤️
Geezer, the bassist, said they were walking along one night and passed by a house party, where a group of skin heads wearing combat boots were on the porch. They thought they looked and behaved like clowns, and that was the inspiration for Fairies Wear Boots.
Don't forget the faerie was dancing with a dwarf. Saw Sabbath twice in the late seventies.
I love when Ozzy just runs out of lyrics, and fills the last line with "yeah".
Paranoid live 1970 in Paris.
One of my favorite bands of all time. They round out my top five with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Judas Priest, Clutch, and Metallica being the other 4. Can never go wrong reacting to any of them. Peace and love.
The whole Vol.4 is magical. Supernaut and Snowblind for starters.🎸
Lex when she said "well yeah I was just thinking he saw a gnome with tactical boots..."
Brad "Yeah where do you see gnomes?"
Hand of Doom has the music Lex loves and tells a dark story that Brad would totally understand. Best of both worlds. And it’s my all time favorite….
"After Forever" is one of my favorite Sabbath songs.
Lex should be in a rock band..love that BLALALALALA thing she did while 'singing' 😁
Smoked a lot of weed in the 70's listening to Sabbath, Floyd and Zeppelin. This bring back good memories.
black sabbath originally started the whole changing of the music in their songs before anyone else...they will change 4 to 5 times in every thing they do..shows just how great their musical instrumental brilliance really is....best band ever...
More Sabbath!🤘🤘 Electric funeral, into the void, children of the grave, under the sun, supernaut, planet caravan, sweet leaf, hand of doom, NIB, snowblind
"Smokin' and trippin is all you do", Yeah!
