Story is that back in England the skinheads wore the boots, probably Doc Marten's, and it was the hippies, Ozzy types vs. the skinheads cliques. He's calling the skinheads "fairies".
The story is that they were walking back to their B&B after a gig in Workington, Cumbria, and the road they were walking on was a tad higher than the houses running alongside. Looking through the windows from that vantage point they could see a load of skinheads partying in one of the houses. Possibly apocryphal, but I like the idea

Butler stated the song was a reference to skinheads and LSD. Ozzy has also stated the song was about LSD and at other times saying he can't remember what it was supposed to be about. Iommi said it was about skinheads but the lyrics became more fanciful most likely due to the drugs they were using at the time.

The story behind the song is funny originally Ozzy came up with the idea after getting into a confrontation with skinheads who called him a fairy couldn’t figure out how to write a whole song about it so then just went off about An experience with LSD. Yes, I heard this, too. That might be a watered down PC version. I heard that the skin head appeared to be gay, hence "a fairy with boots on."
I think you are right, but i think the skinheads were the fairies rather than calling him a fairy, they wore doc marten boots back then.

@@daveminers3404 I don't know anything about drumming, but revisiting their music, I'm shocked that you don't hear his name mentioned among the greats often. Think his fills are awesome and fun to watch. Someone commented that Animal was probably patterned after him, which really cracked me up.
"Hand of Doom" is an underrated song of theirs you would LOVE. Dank grooves and a powerful message.

Was born in '71. Babysat by older cousins. I was turned onto Black Sabbath at a very early age. Been a metalhead my whole life because of it.
I was born a year after you but didn't discover Sabbath until I was about 12. LOL we were visiting relatives and I was thumbing through my aunt's record collection. All this "easy-listening" type music...Kenny G, Ann Murray...like that. Well, I get WAAAAY to the back of the box...and there, I found "Paranoid".

The song was actually inspired by Tony Iommi's Dislike of the skin head culture at the time. He used to refer to them as Fairies in boots.
I think the PunkRock scene in general and the SkinHead culture in particular that was heavy at the time in England. And yeh the DocMartin boots were an iconic part of the fashion.
@@troy78 This happened well before that era. The original skinhead movement started in England about 68. Punks and the skinhead revival happened almost a decade later. You are correct about the Do Martins though. Fairies was a derogatory term for effeminate guys at the time. Ozzy got attacked by some skinheads , so penned the lyrics as his response
This came out in 1970 and it still holds up today. Still sounds pretty modern unlike most other music at the time. It's crazy how innovative Black Sabbath was

People just need to face it. Drugs were a huge part of early rock and it influenced how people both created music and how people listened to it. If you didn't 'do' drugs, most of it sounded like noise. Eventually Bands became more proficient at creating that ole 'hippie' music. I don't expect people to 'get it' today - but that's alright.

Hardly anyone ever suggests it but since you're doing a lot of early Black Sabbath please consider doing the song "Warning". It's got some of the best guitar work you'll hear from them and it was done, I hear, in one take. It's from their debut album. Thanks.
Tony Iommi's solo in that song is f***in ridiculous. LOL I mean in a GOOD way. He used rock, blues, classical, and jazz styles in that solo. It travels from one style into another and back again and then somewhere else. It's frickin GENIUS.

In fact, listen to anything on the first two albums Ozzy put out once he left Black Sabbath. Those two albums, “Diary of a Madman” and “Blizzard of Ozz” are two of the realest ever!! “Believer”, “S.A.T.O”, “You Can’t Kill Rock and Roll, “Crazy Train”... CLASSICS!! Beleiver yes its fantastic i have those two amazing albums right behind sabbaths heaven and hell and mob rules all 4 albums came out bassicaly the same time i remember neing so upset bout the breakup but in hindsight look what happend as a result 4 of the greatest most influentual metal albu.s of all time so thank you tony iommi for havin the balls to fire the greatest frontman in rock history it was thr best thing for ozzy it was the best thing for the best vocalist in metal history DIO and the best thing us metal fans

Black Sabbath is a jazzy blues band with great riffs from Tony Iommeon guitar Geezer Butler on bass ,Bill Ward doing crazy drums,and Ozzy on vocals
The story is true, at a show in 1982 in Des Moines Iowa, Ozzy bit the head off a bat. Apparently he was unaware the bat was real. Believing it to be something thrown on stage by a fan, and thinking it would be funny rip up this rubber bat someone threw at him, so he bit the head off, turns out it was a real bat, whoops.
This was 1970 and the only place you heard Black Sabbath was on fm, dungeon, radio. No one listened to FM , it was all AM radio. Like WLS from Chicago who in 1970 was still playing the Archie's Sugar,Sugar. The songs on AM were upbeat and less than 3 minutes long. Music was changing, with Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin putting a twist on rock no one had heard. Zep more towards the bluesy mystical rock, while Black Sabbath towards a darker more metal sound.
You could only hear them on underground FM stations where the DJ's were half-stoned and would flip on and play a whole album side. (most record sales in 60's were 45 rpm single songs as opposed to 33 rpm full albums) This was totally different and with FM the quality vs AM was crystal clear.
College radio also. Which the FCC has worked hard to eliminate.
As far back as I can recall, there were two good FM rock stations, the Loop and WMET.
Around the same time I discovered 102.5 WDVE in Pittsburgh. They'd recently changed their call sign and format to AOR. Goodbye AM radio.
I bought first albums by Doors and Hendrix in 68. Definitely LPs were big by then in rock. Although you still had top 40 and lots of 45s, FM stereo was getting popular.

This song was actually talking about Ozzy's run in with skin heads. Who commonly wore army boots. He's essentially calling skin heads fairies.
Funny story about this song is back in the day before stardom Sabbath had some trouble with some local Skinheads that hated their long hippy hair styles. So skinhead dudes usually wear combat boots and that's the story. Fairies Wear Boots are the skinheads. Another funny story or joke is that Geezer Butler's mom called and asked them tell him to turn his bass guitar down because it's too loud. They were in New York and mom was in England. What I enjoy about this band is that their sound has a blues element with Tony Iommi on lead guitar

Bill Ward the drummer and Geezer Butler the bass player never get on any top 10 lists for drummers or bass players but both are so influential and creative!

First ever real Heavy Metal Band and a game changer in style of music for the times! Look up what was popular when these guys cranked out the raw, gritty first album Black Sabbath!
I think after a couple of listens, you come to appreciate the bass and drum work on this, can pass you by when you're first trying to get a handle on the overall song. My next few Sabbath choices for you guys would be Symptom of the Universe, Snowblind, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Symptom especially has one of those mellow outros you like so much Lex.
Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener on the other hand has a outro that gets wicked and is best played at full volume.

Brad nailed it with his comment, " try-hard darkness" describes so much of the newer metal that comes out. All these singers trying to sing like demons sound like what a 12 year old would find scary, it just comes across immature and put-on. You really want to hear some scary vocals, check out the album Houdini by the Melvins, Buzz Osborne scares the crap out of me sometimes.
Memories of driving from San Bernardino to Newport Beach in my cousins (RIP) 65 impala with Black Sabbath in the tape deck. We also had Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. They both died way too young. One in a fire the other of flesh eating bacteria. Thank You for this one.

Love Black Sabbath with Ozzie. They are very blues oriented. I love blues and jazz. Must be the southern boy in me. There are no bad Sabbath songs with Ozzie. No doubt it was some psychedelic influence here. Brad i love how stoic you are and Lex is always ready to JAM. Enjoy

Brad & Lex - I would imagine there is always some pressure to love a song as much as your fans - and this song is well loved by metal fans - but i'm glad that you are being honest in your reactions. I love this song and Black Dog as well - but i love your reactions because I believe they're sincere. And authentic. So i love that you are being honest. Not your favorite Black Sabbath song? That's ok. There's plenty more to choose from. Also - it's worth noting that this is the last song on their 2nd album 'Paranoid.' Listening to it as a stand-alone song is a very different experience than listening to the entire album and finishing with this song. I hope you are willing to do more Black Sabbath. I can't blame 'em either. I'm a HUGE Sabbath fan, and "Faeries Wear Boots" isn't my favorite Sabbath song, either. I'll listen to it, sure. But tell me to name my top ten favorite Sabbath songs, and watch it NOT be on the list LOL

Ozzy said that everybody thought that "the Bat" was a PR gag but he said people would throw things on stage alot back then and when somebody threw the "the Bat" on stage at him, he picked it up an bite it's head off, thinking it was a rubber toy bat. He had to go and get Rabbie shots from the whole deal also.
black sabbath originally started the whole changing of the music in their songs before anyone else...they will change 4 to 5 times in every thing they do..shows just how great their musical instrumental brilliance really is....best band ever...
The "faires wearing boots" are actually the skinheads who used to try and beat black sabbath up. They had a running battle with sabbath. So the song is actually about skinheads and drugs.
There's two stories about what the song was about. One is the lyrics were inspired by an incident after a Sabbath concert in 1970. The band was attacked by a bunch of Skinheads, wearing boots, after the show, injuring Tony Iommi and forcing them to cancel their next performance. He also said "We smoked a lot of dope, so that might be why some of the lyrics are a bit unusual." The other story is Geezer and Ozzy were smoking pot and saw fairies in boots running around a park. Most people believe the first of the two stories is the inspiration for the song.
This song is off from the 2nd album, Paranoid , the story behind the song is about kids trying to dress up like skinheads with those boots or something like that. But , the whole groove of the song is so freakin good and tight as a drummer, it’s really fun to play!
"I looked out a window..." Ozzy is talking about "window-pane acid" from back then (1970's).
While on acid, Ozzy saw some skin-heads ( shaved-head racists that usually wore big boots - possibly Doc Martins) thus FAIRIES wear boots.
It is a knock the on the racist skin-heads of the time.
BTW Ozzy was a true showman - thus the biting heads off bats was for show - all press is good press as they say - it made him famous.
Also - when ever you see any drawings of fairies, elves and the such, they always have boots on.....hmmm.

Geezer, the bassist, said they were walking along one night and passed by a house party, where a group of skin heads wearing combat boots were on the porch. They thought they looked and behaved like clowns, and that was the inspiration for Fairies Wear Boots.
Geezer Butler the bassist was the one that wrote must of the songs tho, Ozzy only sang it, also the bat incident was when Ozzy was very high and thought that the bat was a toy lol, He got into coke and hard drinking when Randy Rhodes died, there's when he got his nickname Prince of Darkness lol 🤘
Don't forget the faerie was dancing with a dwarf. Saw Sabbath twice in the late seventies.
This song is a combination. Yes, a bit psychedelic but it is also based on an experience the members had with a run-in with skinheads after a show, wearing of course, combat boots, which is being made light of here. Tony Iommi was actually injured in that run-in and the next show had to be cancelled. One of my favorite Sabbath tunes, so hopefully it will grow on you a bit!
Loved the eureka moment when Brads figured it out that this song was written by someone on psychedelic's. Gave me a good chuckle as I love this song for what it is, a good jam song where the words are funny as all heck. Thanks for the chuckle!!
NIB is the one classic Black Sabbath song you still need to react to. I´m not gonna give away what Ozzy is singing about, I´m just looking forward to see your faces when you figure it out, and you will, the lyrics are pretty much straightforward.
Also Geezer's noodling on the bass before the song really starts is cool.
I just get the feeling that during every instrumental part Brad is thinking "this is boring, get back to the words so I have something to read and not just stare at the screen like a zombie".

This song came out in 1970... 'Black dog' by Led Zeppelin came out in 1971. Late Zeppelin drummer John Bonham was a huge Sabbath fan, apparently. And yes, Geezer Butler (bass) was into weed and dope when he wrote the lyrics 😂

I remember seeing the northern lights while walking home as a teen in Seattle. I wasn't listening to this song but I always associate it with that experience. I Got home and pulled my parents/sister outside to see it.
I listened to Sabbath with my kids when they were pretty young, like before they were 10. And my youngest son at the time, he was probably 5 just loved this song. This one and Electric Funeral. They loved Sabbath. Their mom didn't like that very much but there's a reason we got divorced I suppose.

Apparently in the early days of Black Sabbath Ozzy was walking past a house of skin heads when they first came on to the scene having a party and he saw the way they were dressed and with there shaved heads thought they looked like fairy’s hence fairy’s wear boots
