It’s always entertaining watching a couple of amateurs putting a top end on an engine. Didn’t check piston to bore clearance, honed the cylinder with engine oil instead of an abrasive fluid such as WD40, CRC 5-56, penetrating oil etc, Hone speed was too fast and plunge was too slow, didn’t bother checking ring end gap in cylinder, didn’t bother washing the cylinder with hot soapy water.😬 Arguing about the cam position in the head, that was hilarious! Didn’t bother oiliing the cam bearings or lobes, didn’t fill the oil reservoir under the cam lobes. 🫣 Fitting the socket to the gun with his teeth was crazy!! 😳 How bout ol Pap coughing all over the boy and he was diving for cover lol 🤣 Didn’t bother using Loctite on the cam sprocket bolts. 🥹 Didn’t bother using sealant on the tappet cover 🙄 Tappet clearance check done by feel… 😅 “We’ve done this a million times” 😆 Wow… I really enjoyed the vid guys, thanks a lot 😎
I enjoyed watching this video and it has given me the confidence to tear down my bike (an '86 XL185). Thank you. I just want to know if the rocker cover has a gasket - i missed that on the video. Thanks again for taking your time to record and share.
Hello, glad you have some more confidence after seeing our video that makes us feel good. There’s no gasket for the rocker cover on top. I would recommend using a small bit of Honda gasket seal at the very top of the engine, but be careful to not get it anywhere near the oil port where the Cam sits in. You can also use high heat gasket sealer.
This was great. I love the XR's but have always been hesitant to try anything like this. Your video has given me an inside look at the engine and the process and my confidence is growing. A few more of your videos and I might have a go at the XR 80 engine in the barn. Please enter me to win the bike giveaway. I loved to have yours as the keystone to my budding mechanical inspirations. Thanks. subscribed.
Lisa thank you for the kind words. You have been entered into the drawing!!! If you need any assistance with the xr80 please feel free to ask. The 80 motor is less difficult to work on so I think you’ll have no problem getting it back on the road.
Just wondering, how much does a 650cc engine rebuild go for nowadays. i have an 88 honda nx that smokes and has a crack on the cylinder. Its my first bike and will never sell it.
The auto decomp is located on the right side of the engine if standing behind it. It is a cable and pulley system located on the outside of the motor. One side attaches at the bottom by the kick starter and the other at the top of the head by the exhaust valve. When you kick the starter it will press down the decomp and release pressure on the valve to help you start the bike

Supposed to check ring gap with a feeler gauge in the cylinder before you put them on the piston .
That part didn’t make it into the video but your are correct. We checked the gaps they were in spec
Yeah thoose pistons have that added black coating on the side which is supposed to lower temps and reduce friction
For sure!
love the 4k quality!
Go pro hero 8 black is what we film with
think about doing a maintenance/repair video on a 230cc trail bike their very common - at least were I live.
Hello thanks for joining in! We are in the process of rebuilding a crf230f. The motor rebuild is live more to come

The cylinder on eBay was 445 the piston was 159.
What are you talking about for the auto decompress? and how do I know if my bike has one?

NORTHERN WISCONSIN HELLO > NEW SUB ...
Thank you!
Didn't lubrication the piston and rings and cylinder??
We always use a paint brush and oil to lightly lubricate the cylinder prior to installing the piston.
