Great video, thanks. I'm rebuilding a 1981 XR200 and this has been the most informative and useful video I've found for the XR200. You've done a great job describing and showing the process and from what I can tell have left no details out. Again, thank you.
Thanks man I really appreciate that. Hope you get yours up and running again.
Hey there, I have a random question. I can't seem to find the right setup for my 1981 xr 200s front sprocket. When I got the bike it can walk on the shaft back and forth and I can see that something is missing there but I'm finding all kinds of mixed diagrams online. Could you send me a Pic of what's in between the case and the sprocket if you can?
@@2ndgenlifeyour sprocket should have bolts that hold it in place with a spin washer that locks into the gaps in the counter shaft then bolts go through it to hold the sprocket, there should be a gap between it and the casing as stock fitting.
That was brave he put that woodruff key in without covering that hole in the case I did that once before and let’s just say I never will ever again
Yea I have had to fish one or two out with a magnet before.
I was showing people on xr’s only how i pulled the lower gear off with a puller and some sick f was like “your doing it wrong “ he was like all you have to do i slide a chiesel down the timing chain alley and wedge it behind the sprocket Nd tap off!! Def food for thought my lower sprocket was so seized on im glad i got it off! Thanks for the vids!
Excellent video you make what for most of us is a complex process very understandable thanks
Appreciate the comment!
Wow thanks for the video I was trying to do it with the chain on cam then valve cover but will definitely try it they way you did looks easier
Just make sure you push the cam chain tensioner all the way down and it will slide right on.
Thank you so much sir this video helped me rebuild my xr and get back in the woods
Awesome. Glad you got it running again.
Great video, thanks 👍
Thanks for watching.
Awesome job. Sub'd!
Thanks, well done
compression release on case install can be tricky....
Great video.
Putting an xr200 together atm.
Quick question. Is there only one bushing on the cam? The inner side behind the sprocket seems to spin in the alloy. Is this correct?
Yes that is correct. Only one bearing on the cam. The inner side spins directly on the journal of the head.
Do I have to pull motor out of frame to replace piston rings on 1986 xr200? Your videos are great with good details
No you can do everything in the frame. I mostly choose to take them out for video purposes.
Hi..thanx for sharing...do you know how much voltage this bike macks out of the magneto alternator?
Me bike is1982 model
Thanks for the video. I have 1 question, when installing the head there is a little rubber O ring that slides on one of the dowels. From what I've heard it helps with oiling the upper half. Did you install one ?
Honda went from a three dowel, one O-ring set up to a two dowel, no O-ring system around 1993. If you have a fiber gasket you need the o ring. I have the newer style gasket and 2 dowels since it’s a 2000.
@@MarleyJaxGarage along with which dowel does the o-ring go...my 1983 XR200R only had two dowels and what looks to be a fiber gasket and I don't see any o-ring. I don't want to close it up if the O-ring is absolutely required and onto which dowel. Great video!
I bought tensioners for my xr200r off ebey but they are 1/2" shorter than originals is this normal? Thank you
thanks, good information good video.
Thanks for watching
did i miss the cleaning of the valve grinding clean up? can you use water and Dawn ?
I usually don’t show any cleaning in my videos, people stop watching. You can use soapy water, I used my parts cleaner but anything would be fine.
Great videos. I just completed this part and went to turn the flywheel by hand... I can only move it a little on each side of TDC. Is it supposed to be this tight when fully assembled? I haven't tried to turn it with any tools yet, just by hand.
Do you have the spark plug in? It will be harder to turn with compression. You will have to turn hard enough for the rockers to press the valves down. It’s not too hard, should be easy with a ratchet and make sure you are turning the engine the correct direction.
@@MarleyJaxGarage Yeah, spark plug was in and all became smooth when I took it out. Thanks.
what valves did ya buy?
Idk if i just didn’t catch it or it was hard to see but where is the timing mark on the plate and cover ? did rings on my 88 xr200r today and it’s running a little weird think it might have to do with the timing.
Yea there is a timing mark on the plate that I install starting at 28:30.
Hello sir, do you know where to buy online parts for Honda XR200 just like yours ?
I bought a 1995 xr200r it had a 66mm piston in it and the cylinder was bad so it smoked I put a new cylinder on and a new piston factory oem size cylinder and piston had it running it was making a loud clicking noice later the timing chain stretched and broke and both cam bolts came out do I need to adjust my valves?
It’s sounds like something got bent or messed up. Timings chains stretch over time but they rarely brake unless really loose or the engine locks up. I would check the lower end out really well, make sure the gear on the crankshaft is not worn. You could do a leak down to check the valves.
Did your head have the funny looking rubber plug for the machining hole? It's the oil gally for the cam journal/bushing?
Yes it did. You need that to make sure the cam is being oiled properly. It will lose oil pressure through the machining hole without it.
@@MarleyJaxGarage yea I was looking on how it goes in. I bought 2 of these bikes pretty cheap and one was gone and the cam journals was ruined because of it. I got another head because of it. I really liked your videos. I sent my cranks and cylinders off two years ago and have never received them back yet. I gotta go get my parts and find another machine shop to rebuild the cranks and bore the cylinders. I've live in Eastern ky.
@@skoal022 There is really only one way to put it in, small side goes in the hole. I have heard of people not knowing what it is or losing them and killing the heads. I just bought my first boring bar, lathe and stuff to rebuild crankshafts. Hopefully one day in the future I will be good enough to do it for other people.
@@MarleyJaxGarage heck yea.
Awesome video man I have a 1990 xr200r whenever I put the head on and tighten the acorn nuts my cam won't spin freely it gets locked up for some reason any ideas?
Can you spin it backwards or does the whole thing just lock up? Almost sounds like the valves are really tight or the piston is hitting the valve. The cam shouldn’t be an issue since it’s inside of a bearing unless the other end is all scored up. Also make sure your spark plug is out so there is no compression.
@@MarleyJaxGarage as soon as I get the acorn nuts torqued the cam locks up and won't budge either way, I replaced the cam bushing which fits snugly in the journal and the journal that the front of the cam sits on by the sproket is definitely scored. The spark plug wasn't out so that could be it, but the valves being tight wouldn't matter I still should be able to turn the cam about 90° Till the lobes touch the rocker arms no? I could be wrong.
The camshaft goes into a camshaft bushing that has a nipple on it that goes into the head if you don’t line that up and get that nipple in the head correctly it will bind on you you can try that hopefully that’s the only problem you have good luck
28:18 whats that part called with the springs
For the timing sprocket on the crank was there a certain tooth you had to line up with the keyway 13:02
No the tooth doesn’t matter.
@@MarleyJaxGarage thanks
getting the clutch cover on , on these things is so hard! any tips??
Take your time and turn the engine on the side so everything stays in place.
@@MarleyJaxGarage I ended up getting it/mastering it… it’s really not that hard tbh. you have to make sure everything is in place like you you were saying. for example my gear shifter was in the way pushing on it so it wouldn’t allow the case to properly seat. thank you!!
so I'm having a hard time getting my bottom end timing sprocket off on my 2001 XR, I bought a puller but it sucks and slips. were did you get yours?
Mine wasn’t the best either. I had to modify mine. If I had to do it over again I would probably just split the case and use my press. I used this I think Performance Tool W80653 Pulley Puller a.co/d/9L9vfDf
@@MarleyJaxGarage thanks
about how much to do this rebuild?
okay but where can i find that dowel pin that holds the rotor in place ive looked everywhere
I usually buy my stuff from Rocky Mountain ATV. The Pin on the camshaft is Part 30905-216-000 PIN, CAMSHAFT (3X5.2). The woodruff key that holds the flywheel on is Part 90741-KFB-000 KEY, WOODRUFF (4MM)
@@MarleyJaxGarage Thank you very much you are my savior
Where can I find parts for these bikes I'm rebuilding the head on one but cant find any parts
I usually use partzilla, Rocky Mountain atv and eBay to source all my parts.
Muy bueno amigo saludos desde argentina! Yo por armar mi xr 200 92 una restauración completa . Saludos genio
Little bit .. puts as much as he can 😂 That's way too much gasket maker .. also little bolts do not need so much loctite , will be a struggle to get them loose again.
what did the total of the parts cost?
I think with parts, gaskets and oil it was less than 200 dollars.
@@MarleyJaxGarage ok. I’m sure I’ll be using this video as a reference eventually. Appreciate the content
Your cam bearing surfaces are toast!
That head is junk!
Yea it wasn’t the best but it’s still running great. I rebuild these for fun and try to make the best with what I have. It’s not like people are paying customers.
Where did you order your parts from
I usually get all my parts from partzilla or Rocky Mountain Atv.
I'm trying to redo the timing on my 98 xr200
What type chain do I need
@@twystidjuic885 on both of those sites you can select year/make/model and it will give you all the oem parts. Then just find the timing chain and order it. You will probably want to order the timing chain guides as well.
Nice, ggz-👽👍🚲💥💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
Thanks for watching!
Please make a video restoration honda CT200 auto 1992 for enggine full reatoration.... Thanks🇹🇱🇹🇱🇹🇱
I will keep an eye out for one.
New rings but no honing the cylinder?
Useless
I’m pretty sure I hit it with a ball hone when I was cleaning it up. Probably just forgot to mention it since I did it before assembly.
@@MarleyJaxGarage forsure.
