Blows my mind that you can replace the head/pistons for less than the pulse generator+parts if its missing. Really if people looked after these motors better they would never die, just like the honda commercial motors
i learned this trick with old chev halfton differentials..if ya turn off your stick welder hook up the ground of course and slide a rod down into the middle of the broken off bolt ..have a buddie or reach and flip your power on and off really quick.the rod will quickly tack itself to the bolt ..usually a 7018 will stick right to the bolt and it will turn right out ...not if its tight but it works really awesome sometimes in a pinch ...love these old wheelers i got a 250es myself ...most fun i've had
I know the cylinder looks bad but that one looks usable. I guess my motto is try it if it works great if not your going to have to rebuild it anyways. I have unstuck probably a half dozen engines all the same way. Most of the time you dont have to dive into it and take it apart. The guy had a some what idea of what to do but ask any car guy about unseizing an engine it all starts with Marvs Mystery Oil. Ive even heard of Jay Leno using this trick. Ive only had one that I had to take apart but I was going to upgrade the heads anyways and that was on an 4.3 v6. I really didnt even try to get it unstuck I just took the heads off and poured the Oil right in. And trust me The cylinders looked Awful one was full of water. Way worst then that cylinder. I used a scotch brite pad dipped in mystery oil on the bad cylinders to kind of etch and clean the bad rust spots. The funny thing is the one with the worst rust has the highest compression 160 all the rest are around 150. Ok so this is what you do you pour the mystery oil down the cylinder through the spark plug and let it sit. may be over night. then you get a breaker bar with a socket or even by hand Ive done it and and you wiggle the crank back and forth. even if it doesnt budge it wil eventually free you might have to pour more in or even heat the cylinder a little and the oil but it will free up. after its unseized drain oil and all the fluids and replace spark plug etc. Know its time to start and when it first does its going to smoke like an S.O.B. it has to burn of that oil but it should go away eventually. Break it in slowly and when you feel comfortable run the piss out of it to clean out that carbon. Lastly I know this works I had an old Motorcycle I parked outside during the winter got moisture in the cylinders. I tried everything on it even brought it to the dealer thinking that it was the starter. They where like nope its seized you have to rebuild it. My buddy taught me this trick. It took one knight and I hit the starter and it unseized bingo bango. Saved me thousands and I have driven that bike probable 10,000 miles since no problems no smoking etc. runs great hope this helps!
I saw your reply on this video, do you have any advice for a siezed 400 cc Honda rancher four wheelers engine. Please contact me, my email is dad1012928@yahoo.com, or by phone! text if you prefer. 423-618-6605, my name is Michael. Thank you and God bless
Cool idea to remove the broken bolt, im going to have to try that on a lawn mower i broke a bolt off in. Our 200es had a flooding out carb and along with some nice yellow puke looking oil. The PO also put the timing chain on wrong and it would try and rip your arm off if you pulled it over. When I took the engine apart they must have recently rebuilt it, and it runs amazing in comparison to our worn out 200e. Gotta love getting stuff cheap it was assembled incorrectly, or taken care of poorly.
Take the two 24mm hex valve lifter adjustment covers off valve cover out watch for oil to top end if none replace the oil pump like I said ealier or it goes screech and seized up quick bye bye new piston and cam
If that bolt was not broke could you have removed that left cover without removing the bolt. Is that bolt reverse thread. I have a small oil leak and want to pull that cover and replace the gasket but it will not come off . I have not removed the bolt.
hi, love your vids, I have a atc200 with the return springs broken, on the spark advance.... whats the easyiest way to get that off so i can put a new one in. the bike usually starts first time, but always fouling plugs.
pulse coil is still hooked in the harness, dont really wanna be unhooking and fooling around with that, if i dont have too. Ive marked the coil with marker lines on the base, to try to put it back in the exact same spot. but the screws are starting to strip. I stopped b4 actually stripping them. can i just take whole base off ( which everything still hooked up) ?
Just seized mine today after running on no oil. Just put some mystery oil in the spark plug hole and filled the oil. Good to go after a handful of turns. CANT KILL A THREE WHEELER
Know anything about the older 350s? Might buy up one that's seized but buddy says it was probably a bent valve from jumping timing, apparently a common issue?
Cool ! Now you ya know ,lucky no bent valves . Piston, rings, pin&bearing , & boar out to next size,& engine flush ....that thig should be smok'n again ...well not really smoking ,should be good to go. Thumbs up Louie!
I wonder if those clutch plates are going to be ok after soaking in gas. I've seen gas flooded engines where the cutch is shot after soaking for a while.
the bike moves freely in gear . i put oil in it while it was hot and every since then it will not go in gear or move after i kick start it and try to take off it just free roll... its 1983 honda 200x three wheeler
how come you didnt say what year /size of engine? was it the 200 cc chain drive non reverse big red or the 2oocc with shaft /reverse or the venerable 250 shaft /reverse model?
Darrren Betker you can tell by the sub trans that this is a 200es big red. They are shaft drive with reverse. Most likely it is an 84 model because that seems to be the most common year for 200es and the year most 200es's were made.
Thank you sooooooo much for posting these videos! After watching this, I have such a better understanding on what to expect when I dig into my 82. I have a question though, my big red never came with a high/low range lever to switch between the two. So to make due, I screwed in a screw with a nail welded on the top as acting as the lever. It switches smoothly into each range, but the problem I'm having is that it doesn't lock in, it's free to move in and out as it pleases. Do you have any advice as to what to do?
I think you did good on video and work I don't see any of these other guys talking shit about what you did wrong have a shop and filming videos. So keep it up I learned something cause I'm honest I don't shit about ATC engines
Hey I bought a 200 big red that starts first pull everytime, I can drive it ver slow or let it idle until I have no gas left in the tank. it is leaking oil from the head. But if I drive it fast it overheats it only a matter of minutes. any idea of what the issue could be?
I always find it hilarious when people comment on how shotty of job someone's doing and that there masters of the trade yet they watch how to videos and regurgitate b.s. if you don't like how one guy gets the job done go watch the other guy or make your own video...sometimes yah need a hammer and sometimes yah need a beer.....
I had to pound out the piston on xl200 today Sam issue as the video only I did not try to force, in the process of slammin that little bastard out I ended up cracking the bottom of the barrel. She was in there good, so my 30 dollar question is can I replace the cylinder wall or should I bite the bullet and get a new bored out top end (300 bucks)
Hey Louis, I was wondering how to fix an out of time 340 arctic cat ( sled) the valves are not where they're supposed to be when the piston comes up. How can I fix this?
in order to do that to a cat motor you need a. muffler stretcher. and a bearing stretcher. also a left handed screwdriver. but sorry i can't tell you how to use those tools lol :) ps you got to watch those cats the valve timing seems to change by itself seems to be more around mid November just a tip
I have never seen mechanics that know what they're doing throw everything inside a pile. Everything's usually laid out in order Even all the bolts. Why would anyone Want to figure out where each bolt goes. Just lay them out in order. With each part you take off. Gee, whiz!
Exactly, as a professional tech I lay parts in order and put in separate containers, packages etc.. I also shake my head when everything tossed on floor or in a pile.
How this motor advance spark because it have cdi unit or governer advance Nowadays cdi motorcycle doesn't have governer only they have cdi unit wich advance the spark so how xl or xr 185 or 200 advance the spark
you think? it comes out pretty easy this way - and it's what the manual recommends for changing the cam. i'll have it looked at, the pitting seems deep but hopefully it can be done.
Dont jump on me for this suggestion, but why couldnt he just clean up the piston with some gasoline, using a toothbrush and clean up the cylinder walls with some emery cloth and or some steel wool?
For the time it takes do and valve stem seals and check your oil pump before you put it all together thing will last another 50 years if you don't swAmp it in a lake again or river and leave it full of water
This engine has never had an oil change in its life and they get hot where it air cooled and oil will get sludge after a month of riding hard in hills where no air flow is as much but don’t work on them if you don’t know how I am going on 20 years building different engines cars and atv and water cooled atvs
2:55 made me cringe.. that is NOT how you seperate a case! Us3 a rubber mallot and tap around the caseing. Wedging an aluminum case normally will crack it or gouge the mating surface. 😮

Hone the cylinder oil it take rings put in oil clean piston clean the rings put her back toghter old Honda engines are the best I have a 91 model 300 four Trax just change oil and spark plug regular can’t kill those engines but keep timing chain with in spec don’t want to hear it to loose

did this motor get fixed ? can't find a video on it,,or a part 2....

Hey Louie! You need to put together a playlist of all things 3 wheeler! Thanks ahead of time!!
El fin te rrv
never hammer a screwdriver between gasket faces 😲😲😲🤤🤤
This dude is rough
The body was so clean on that thing, too bad the engine was seized up.
Great vid Louie, keep 'em coming !!

Sucks sinking money into a project like that. But you're bringing an artifact back to life
I would love if you guys did a front sprocket change video on the Atc200e ! Seems like alot to take apart
Cool idea to remove the broken bolt, im going to have to try that on a lawn mower i broke a bolt off in.

You got lucky as hell with that bolt!

Link to follow up completion video?? Also, your table wobbling was making me nervous.
Do you need to get a new cylinder and piston to get it unseize or just clean all the parts you did?
Do you have a link for putting this engine back together?
hi, love your vids, I have a atc200 with the return springs broken, on the spark advance.... whats the easyiest way to get that off so i can put a new one in. the bike usually starts first time, but always fouling plugs.

I think you might able to hone the cylinder at just bore it over by a little bit and then get new piston and rings
Anyone notice him say drink a beer around 7:01-7:03 lol
Lol. I just went to that time and listened to it, that had me laughing hard, need to drink a beer lol
Subliminal messaging I was wondering why I felt like I wanted one
Know anything about the older 350s? Might buy up one that's seized but buddy says it was probably a bent valve from jumping timing, apparently a common issue?
Cool ! Now you ya know ,lucky no bent valves . Piston, rings, pin&bearing , & boar out to next size,& engine flush ....that thig should be smok'n again ...well not really smoking ,should be good to go. Thumbs up Louie!
Can you show how to fix the neutral light inside theengine
Why the hell would you use a screwdriver and a hammer to pull the side cover first? WTF dude.
My exact thoughts. Dude is gonna fuck up the case by doing that. Alla you need is a mallet some love taps around and Voilà
Mason Wengeler he hasn’t mastered engines
can you please tell me how to adjust a 1984 HONDA ATC 200S air and fuel mix on a carburetor thanks
Samuel Chirilenco there’s a video on how to do that you just have to look for it
New crank/bearings, new piston/cylinder
I wonder if those clutch plates are going to be ok after soaking in gas. I've seen gas flooded engines where the cutch is shot after soaking for a while.
Good question -I guess I'll find out!
How did you get good at motors? childhood experience?
the bike moves freely in gear . i put oil in it while it was hot and every since then it will not go in gear or move after i kick start it and try to take off it just free roll... its 1983 honda 200x three wheeler
Can you repair the engine of my 1985 250ES?....I will be happy to mail it you...thanks...it turns, but only 180 degrees each way
how come you didnt say what year /size of engine? was it the 200 cc chain drive non reverse big red or the 2oocc with shaft /reverse or the venerable 250 shaft /reverse model?

Did you not put this motor together again
Thanks alot bud this really help my issue ..
Does the big red and the 200m share the same engine ?
Did you ever do q video on rebuilding it
How do I remove the sub transmission cover on a 200 es
....I like he is on some type of stimulant or something....way to fired up.
Thank you sooooooo much for posting these videos! After watching this, I have such a better understanding on what to expect when I dig into my 82. There should be a screw with a spring and detent try checking that
I think you did good on video and work I don't see any of these other guys talking shit about what you did wrong have a shop and filming videos. So keep it up I learned something cause I'm honest I don't shit about ATC engines
Hey I bought a 200 big red that starts first pull everytime, I can drive it ver slow or let it idle until I have no gas left in the tank. it is leaking oil from the head. But if I drive it fast it overheats it only a matter of minutes. any idea of what the issue could be?
i had that happen too. not the overheat, but the head leaks oil, and all mine drained out. so i think it leaks out, and overheats

Ball bearings, some gauze and some forty weight oil - just ask geometry fletch.
is it possible to have a bike that is seized and still kicks over?
no
Will a 300fw topend work on that 200e?
Awesome video thanks
Louis try muriatic acid! It will remove the rust but ! The rust would have probably damage the cyl wall!
Great job.
Thanks!
I have never seen mechanics that know what they're doing throw everything inside a pile. Everything's usually laid out in order Even all the bolts. Why would anyone Want to figure out where each bolt goes. Just lay them out in order. With each part you take off. Gee, whiz!

lol ya, im a piler.
How this motor advance spark because it have cdi unit or governer advance Nowadays cdi motorcycle doesn't have governer only they have cdi unit wich advance the spark so how xl or xr 185 or 200 advance the spark
It's easier to get the cam out if you take the rocker cover off lol, and I'd just overbore it, just .010 or .020 over, just the minimum needed.
you think? it comes out pretty easy this way - and it's what the manual recommends for changing the cam. i'll have it looked at, the pitting seems deep but hopefully it can be done.
Guess I never tried that way, just assumed it was harder haha.
Gearheadtom nope pretty darn easy - and you don't need to replace the gasket:) unless the whole thing gets torn down I guess.
PowerModz That's not a big issue anyway, the rocker cover doesn't use a gasket, just sealer, but I'll try that next 185/200 I'm into.
Gearheadtom oh ya - i forgot that - just did it last week:) Tired here.
You're a maniac and i love it. Keep up the good work
I need help with my 1986 230 Suzuki quad sport
im guessing the 250 head wont fit on there? or just find the newer 250 motor...
its a 200, ill bring it in to get bored - see if it can take it.
PowerModz
right, it would be cool if the newer 250 head from the '85 big red would just slide on but probly not
Pro tip: Quit using your palm for a hammer.
Thanks for another good 1
bet someone left the spark plug out
"not a big fan of over boring".....credibility gone.
Did these early Big Reds Have reverse? I cant remember. She will run again!!! I wanna know where your finding these.lol
not this one, hi and low only, gotta look hard!
PowerModz Theres been a few of the 250 Big Heads on the Vt craigslist recently not to bad a ride from the Ottawa area.
Thanks for making video
Dont jump on me for this suggestion, but why couldnt he just clean up the piston with some gasoline, using a toothbrush and clean up the cylinder walls with some emery cloth and or some steel wool?
Quick question. Why aren't you a fan of boring? Thanks and nice video
3:20 dat face tho lol Louis was mad....
Anyone know where the best place engine parts for a Honda atc 1982 200s?
Best parts will always be OEM replacement parts. Look up the part numbers and search them on Ebay.
Just bought my first 3 wheeler would be fun to ride together sometime
For the time it takes do and valve stem seals and check your oil pump before you put it all together thing will last another 50 years if you don't swAmp it in a lake again or river and leave it full of water
Dude, you dont see the tabs on the case to break the seal? My man, easy! What is this your first rodeo?
This guy's rough and in a hurry!
You said you're not a big fan of overboring...please elaborate...I'd bore it over..
I bet some EVAPO RUST and a quick hone would bring that cylinder back.
This engine has never had an oil change in its life and they get hot where it air cooled and oil will get sludge after a month of riding hard in hills where no air flow is as much but don’t work on them if you don’t know how I am going on 20 years building different engines cars and atv and water cooled atvs
hi sir, could you check my 18 sec video and tell me if my engine is seize or else plz i am soo lost and only use my quad 1 time.
Is that a slight irish accent i hear?

Jarret Quarles what you need to rebuild a 350x is a lot of money
Dude wears gloves and shaves his arms 😂😂😂😂
Hone the cylinder oil it take rings put in oil clean piston clean the rings put her back toghter old Honda engines are the best I have a 91 model 300 four Trax just change oil and spark plug regular can’t kill those engines but keep timing chain with in spec don’t want to hear it to loose
