    Have you thought about building a 47 sim? I'm going to retire this summer and looking at building one.

    • @flightsimguides
      @flightsimguides  7 місяців тому +1

      Yea definitely…. High levels of complexity would go into that build though, lol…. I feel like I would need an actual panel from an old D model, a cyclic and thrust, enunciator panel, just everything… the customization would be pretty epic, but it would be awesome!

      We’d need some MobiFlight level customizations and some 3d printing….

    Hi Matt, in regards to having to flash your G5 every time windows updates. I have most of my external hardware all connected through 3 Orico 10 port USB powered hubs, including my 2 G5 and both my RSG 750 and 650...I have never had an issue and they happily accept windows updates without the need to reflash. The hubs have a power switch on them which I only turn on once windows has loaded and ensure I turn them off before closing down. I do record what usb I have plugged them into in case I need to remove them.

      Hey thanks, Dave, glad to hear things work normally for you. It’s always my G5’s from RSG and the propwash xpndr…. Just reassigns the com port every time windows does an update. They are plugged into a usb hub but the hub is under the desk in a cable runner so it’s not easy to get to to turn off and on as needed. Not sure why that would be the issue, but I could try just unplugging the hub from the pc next time it updates and see if it helps…. Would love to see your sim, tag me on fb with it if you get a chance!

    I think the garmin 430/530 support mainly had to do with screen repairs. They aren't going to make those screens anymore, understandably as they are pretty old. But most repairs should be fine, your avionics shop would know best and worst case scenario they can probably source an older unit to use for a repair. The new GTN 650/750s are nice but wait until you build your plane and make a sim to match that!

    • @flightsimguides
      @flightsimguides  7 місяців тому +1

      Awesome good to know. Not too worried about it since my 530/430 are simulator toys at best…. But yea my wallet thinks about that rv-10 cockpit all the time. Dual g3x touch’s with 750/650 and an autopilot….. the sim and the plane will be awesome!

    Touch panels, Air Manager and Knobster work great and give you a lot of flexibility.

      Fully agreed, this right here I built has all three. 15” touchscreen with air manager and a knobster.

    I just don't see how a home cockpit can be better than a top tier VR experience. I am running a HP Reverb G2 at 150% resolution and everything is crystal clear. To me the a game changing technology will be advanced hand tracking software that will allow you to interact with the virtual environment with a high degree of precision. 2D just can't compete with the 3D of VR.

    • @bobbyQQ
      @bobbyQQ 7 місяців тому

      yeah 100%. once I went VR, about 3yrs ago, I can never go back to 2d. Its just not the same, no matter what setup you have. And the cost saving is huge compared to all the peripherals you would need to even come close to what you get in VR. I just use a logitech throttle, a Microsoft FFB stick, and my sim racing pedals, and Im chillin in any cockpit fully immersed, surrounded by all the buttons, knobs, etc that is in the aircraft.

    • @Bellthorian
      @Bellthorian 7 місяців тому +1

      @@bobbyQQ I have the full Logitech yoke, 2 throttle quadrants, radio stack, switch panel, nav panel and honestly I almost never use them because I prefer VR. With pass through technology I might use them in a mixed reality but just using the mouse to click the actual buttons and knobs in vr feels more realistic.

    • @flightsimguides
      @flightsimguides  7 місяців тому

      I haven't taken the leap into the VR world, yet, but with the mixed reality concepts out there and Apple's new Vision Pro headset, i'd absolutely love to see what that headset would bring to a mixed reality or full VR flight sim experience. I like the full tactile experience of pushing buttons and knobs and throttles and stuff, though.

      @@Bellthorian I disagree. When in VR I want to reach out and turn the knobs that I see with my hand, but I can't because there's nothing there. Trying to tune a frequency or set the altimeter with the controller is an exercise in frustration. I want a real knob!

    • @Bellthorian
      @Bellthorian 7 місяців тому

      @@joelv4495 Have you seen the knobster? It is a knob that twists and clicks. It can be bound to every dial, it gives you that physical sensation of turning and clicking things in VR.

    Avidyne has the replacement over your old Garmin with all the new features. Its plug and play.

      For a simulator? From where?

    • @tibortefsen77
      @tibortefsen77 7 місяців тому +1

      No not the sim. For the airplanes out there. Anyway I don't understand why the sim builders or the vendors and the sim itself still use this type of Garmin. As there are a few brands out there like Avidyne that are now more updated and used..

    • @flightsimguides
      @flightsimguides  7 місяців тому

      @@tibortefsen77 ahh, gotcha. My guess is that it’s just a simple program and was easy to implement. but yea I don’t see many Avidyne systems on the market for flight simulators. I think RealSimGear might have something, but it looks like a g1000 competitor. Not a 530/430 competitor.

    I just bought a Mooney 201. I spent more than your whole sim just on some maintenance. I haven't even started on the avionics yet! Once I get my plane up to speed it will be time to get my Instrument Proficiency Check so it will be time to update my simulator.
    If you are going to get a real airplane and want to use it for more than flying around the pattern on weekends you must get your IFR rating! Scud running is a killer. I would use my simulator and fly cross country's over and over then wait for some real IMC and do it in the plane. The beauty of having your own plane is you can go up at a moments notice when there is good IMC training weather. I hate flying under the hood and actual is so much better. A good IFR pilot can fly IMC from take off to minimums and having a good simulator and your own plane is the best way to go.

      Your simulator will NOT be able to log instrument approaches. Those must be certified by the FAA, ie: Redbird, etc... But, it's nice to have a simulator to practice. But, you can't log the time. So, is it really worth it?

    • @libertine5606
      @libertine5606 7 місяців тому

      Who cares about logging approaches if you have your own plane? Flying a desktop simulator isn't even close to the real thing. Unless you have a completely immersive simulator all they are good for is procedures and they don't have to be certified to do that.@@azcharlie2009

    My x box FS2020 spends more time taking up desk space cause it's locked up than it gets used.

      I hear ya, my sim takes a back seat to work most times. Lot I could be using it for, like intentional instrument training. End up using it for the casual vfr flight after fixing the G5’s most times it does get used.
