    On the final Charting of 2018 you should do the top 5 opening weekend/overall grosses of every studio. That would be extremely interesting!

      And a run down of "Flops due to excessive budgets" i.e. films that legitimately made HUGE returns in ticket sales but had so much money spent on them, so....'it was a flop.'

    Dan is so knowledgeable on this subject. It makes me understand and appreciate more of what the studios are looking for and what can be considered a hit or flop. We usually only look domestically, but international is huge and is important.
    Very interesting.
    Also, I love watching Charting with Dan every week. There is always something interesting happening in Hollywood.

    ALL IN, WB SPENT CLOSE TO 300 MILLION ON THE MEG!?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?? What morons at WB greenlit that!??? I do not work in movies but I follow box office very closely and would have told them they're crazy to spend that money. You don't spend that kind of $ on a shark movie with B and C level cast. You shouldn't even spend on an A level cast. C'mon WB, you're smarter than this.

    Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't going anywhere. It's barely below the current #9, and will easily vault over in the coming week on strong returns off a recent UK release and another $5+mil domestic. After that, it finally gets its China release in a week and a half, which should easily rack up tens of millions more. If it has Chinese numbers as strong as the first Ant-Man, it could crack $600 million. Even if far weaker due to Tom Cruise competition, it still has a solid chance at slipping past Detective Chinatown 2 and Operation Red Sea.

    Alpha seems like such a mystery to me honestly. I remember at the beginning of the year seeing the trailer for it in theaters and the tone was super suspenseful and thrilling, like it was going to be a total nail-biter. Last week I went to see the teen titans movie and the re-cut trailer played before it and I was so shocked to see that they changed the tone from a thriller to a "heartwarming" story about a man and his dog lol it's crazy how different that scene where the guy is trapped under the ice plays out when an imagine dragons song plays over it instead of suspenseful music

    I wish it wouldve been crazier. But I had a fun time watching meg. Statham was really good. Unfortunately it didnt make me scared of going in water, which I think every shark movie should be able to do at least a little bit. It didnt go over the top but then it wasn't good scary either.

  • @carlrood4457

    Its box office opening doesn't really matter. Jaws is the best shark movie by far. The technical difficulties definitely help build the suspense, but it also was anchored by three great actors. It's funny despite all the shark stuff, my favorite scene is probably the one when Quint and Hooper are comparing scars and Quint goes on to tell his USS Indianapolis story.

    If you use Dan's logic - Rampage needed to make 700 million to break even, Ant Man 2 needed 850 million, Solo needed 1 billion dollars just to break even, Game Night needed 160 million. Are you suggesting that all these movies massively flopped?? I think.. I think, for once , Dan was wrong. According to other sourced and websites you need to make 2-2.5 times your budget to break even. According to Dan, you need to make 5 times your budget. If that was true, ppl would stop making films.

      I think what Dan was saying in a roundabout way was that The Meg is a unique case compared to the other films you mentioned because the studio spent money on the China deal. Essentially investing in the hopes of making a bigger profit down the road. He has stated before that the normal case is that 2-2.5x the budget is needed

      Heck, it only came out in the UK one and a half weeks ago, and we only have the numbers up to 8/5 for the UK thus far. Ant-Man and the Wasp easily has another $50 million to add, and could quite possibly pull in another $50 million or two beyond that before it's done.

    Not directors, but movie people who are literally *always* good or better:
    - John Williams (when we lose John, movies are just going to be worse)
    - Roger Deakins
    For directors, Dennis Villeneuve is, as you mention, on a serious hot streak (BR2049 and Sicario two my all-time favourite movies, true modern classics), but his track record doesn't stretch all that far. I would also say Tarantino hasn't made a bad film yet. He's got a couple of "meh" ones, but nothing worse than that? Edgar Wright also hasn't made a film that's less than good that I can think of. He's had commercial failures, but I've liked every one of his movies so far.

    • @limitedexperience492
      @limitedexperience492 6 років тому

      Definitely agree on Edgar Wright, but if they are demanding "bankably profitable" in their unspoken criteria, then Scott Pilgrim vs. The World wasn't profitable: Same with Tarantino, as you mention.
      In older directors, Kubrick is one I always love (again, though, some weren't money-makers).

    • @Cuuniyevo
      @Cuuniyevo 6 років тому

      In terms of keeping a high average quality, and limiting to directors I've seen at least 5 films from, I'd submit Brad Bird and James Cameron for your consideration.
      For composers, same parameters, I'd absolutely agree with John Williams, but also suggest Randy Newman, Michael Giacchino and Alan Menken. Each of them has at least 1 flop (critically and/or commercially), but then so does Williams.
      I would personally argue that Tarantino's made a couple outright bad films, but some of that's personal taste and I can acknowledge technical skill in their production.

The sequel wasn't even announced until after it's particularly strong Chinese opening weekend. If 'AM&TW' performs anywhere close to how the first one did, it will definitely jump over 'Dying to Survive' and probably 'Detective Chinatown 2' as well.

    In all honesty I wouldn't have known The Meg existed if it wasn't for Roth. The marketing for this film is interesting. Is this one of those LA/NY movie bubble situations?

    I tried reading the first Meg novel--just to help get excited about the movie--and it's so bad that I couldn't get through it. I had to stop after like 50 pages or something.

    Just saw the china market for old mcu films and its really low. Like many have just 10 million gross. Which made me think, when did china start becoming a top market for movies?

    people actually love Sharktale? That was one of the worst movies i have ever seen. I wish i had gotten the time in my life back i had spent watching it, and i got to see it for free when i was working for Hollywood Video at the time.

    The Meg was good. I think Jurassic World should do a Mosasaurus solo movie. Then if it's successful, boom. The Meg vs Mosasaurus movie. Fingers crossed Universal Studios.

    Did anyone else notice that The Meg was the only movie available this weekend on Movie Pass? I wanted to see it anyway, but I also want to see others. I'm leaving Movie Pass, but maybe this helped The Meg's numbers?

      Alesia V The Meg only popped up for me on Sunday, the big push from Moviepass this week was Slender Man. Of the two movies they were allowing people to see, every day featured Slender Man.

      I wanted to check that out too, but it's not playing anywhere near me.

      Alesia V Slender Man was very bland and forgettable, only saw it because it was the only option avaliable the day I went to the theater and it wasn't on my dime. Wanted to see Meg but my moviepass bud is a monthly member (im annual) and was gonna have to pay an $8 surge so decided to skip it for now.

    Be curious what the long term rollout plan is for BlacKKKlansman. Even if it keeps the same number of theaters next weekend, I think the drop won't be by much.
    It feels like if a movie is going to expand it usually starts out in the hundreds of theaters at most and then expands from there. Is it usual for a movie that opened in 1500 theaters to expand dramatically?
