I find it so ironic that Jumanji was hated when the trailer came out and people were like "oh it's gonna suck" and today we are talking about how it beat Star Wars at the weekend box office....

Well Jumanji had a subpar trailer, while Star Wars had a pretty good trailer. And then the movies came out and they were the opposite of what people thought each was going to be. Now we are here.

I'm so happy Jumanji is doing so well. It could have turned out as another cynical cash grab with no effort but actually the film is really entertaining with a lot of heart. Who knew that this would easily outgross Justice League and Transformers 5?? Props to Sony for having a pretty good 2017 with Homecoming and Baby Driver too.
The Last Jedi well Disney will be disappointed in its performance but anyone saying its failure is just plain wrong. The question becomes whether TLJ will have a negative effect on Episode IX and the overall brand of Star Wars as was shown with BvS with JL's failure.

    • @lorenzoamato953
      @lorenzoamato953 6 років тому +3

Your last point is the real point about TLJ. Its numbers are insanely high, but in comparison with expectations, AND as an indication of the eps 7-8-9 (and further movies) trend, it is not good. BvS was also heralded as a financially succesful but overall underwhelming BO movie, with a very low audience approval. That was the real problem of that movie: not that it bombed, but it foreshadowed the future bombing of JL (which, admittingly, didn' "bomb", but had very bad BO finals). I don't think SW8 will "bomb" (c'mon), but I don't think it will do an "end of the trilogy" peak, as some are thinking.
      POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR TLJ
SW8 was divisive at best (if not overall hated by some of the core fans, which is always bad), with new characters that didn't click with the audience, and one of the real reasons people wanted to see the new movies was to meet Han, Leia and Luke again, which is a card that can't be played in SW9. So in SW9 you are left with a movie that conlcudes a story with no cliffhangers left from SW8, and no classic characters to meet again. Maybe they could play the Lando card. But I doubt it can balance the loss of Solo and Luke. So: yes, I think SW9 is going to show the same downwards trajectory, and if not made well it could be the final nail on the coffin for this franchise to be considered the "one almighty" of all franchises. Would a SW saga movie (e.g. episode 10) grossing around 6-800 millions a movie be considered great by Disney?

The word of mouth on Star Wars: The Las Jedi has definitely affected its box office performance and should be acknowledged. It's a divisive film and had it been better received, it would be doing better at the box office. Happy for Sony that it has a hit with Jumanji. So glad to have this show back! lex1247 RT audience rating?! Seriously?! As unreliable as IMBD which gave TLJ 7.5
CinemaScore is the only known reliable source for audience rating and it was A
No this film is not devisive, the simple fact is the minority who disliked this film is louder than others.
Got the 5th place for all time domestic, It is doing great BO wise don’t worry ;)

    • @blindtruth4614

Joseph Davidson the domestic box office might be high but it was mainly made on the first weekend this movie dropped off by close to 70% in its second weekend which even with the second weekend falling on the Christmas weekend is still awful. Now if you like the film then great but a lot of the traditional fan base did not enjoy it. Personally, I did not like the direction this movie took and the sheer stupidity of the movie was really off-putting and when you couple that with the pro-feminism of the movie really put me off. Still as I said if you enjoyed the move all the power too you but using box office takings as a defence of a movie has to be one of the weakest ones I can think off unless of course, you believe that Avatar is the greatest movie ever or Gone with the wind is if you adjust for inflation.

  • @spg7480

LAST JEDI is going to end up with around a 2.7 multiplayer from opening weekend. The opening weekend was based on the strength of FORCE AWAKENS. To not acknowledge that the word of mouth has affected this film very negatively is ridiculous. It's a huge earner no doubt, but its the next film that will truly feel it's effects.

ShandalfGreyhame I didn’t pay for ep8 I’m not paying for ep.9. Your underestimating how core fans felt burned from this movie. Unless jj pulls a miracle out of his ass. I’d expect a huge box office drop. We already know production for these movies have been shaky at best with no real vision or overarching story. Rian Johnson finished ep.8 before watching 7. If these movies are going to continue to be treated like individuals that don’t connect I’d expect them not to connect well with audiences.

I should watch Jumanji. I watched the review for The Greatest Showman, and honestly I am in the camp that loved it. I even bought the album. I also told my friends how much I enjoyed it. There are some problems, but overall, I enjoyed it. I think another reason Jumanji and The Greatest Showman are doing well is because it's fun. There's so much seriousness going on, and it's great to just go to the movies and forget about what's going on.

I love that you guys owned up to the fact that people are really enjoying The Greatest Showman despite your feelings towards it. It is cheesy and predictable and extravagant, and I and a lot of people are in love with it! I believe Dan knocked the music in the review and I think the Golden Globes showed how they still love a heartfelt and empowering message anthem like, This is Me. It isn't the greatest movie in the world, but what some critics missed the boat on is that people care more about a movie that will make them feel good, than a movie that is technically proficient and tells a deeply complex and layered story. As of this comment, the Rotten Tomatoes score has gone up to 56% after starting its release at about 48% and the audience score is 90%, making it one of the biggest divides between critical reception and audience reception I've seen since Boondock Saints.

    • @kcsupersonic1
      @kcsupersonic1 6 років тому

Nicky B I meant a critically panned movie that the audience loved. The Last Jedi is a different case which is a more common occurance of a critically praised film that audiences were not fans of.

Yep, big dumb family-friendly action-comedy with three huge, bankable stars.. It's being positively reviewed and word of mouth is good.. Not really surprised a 2.5hr character-driven space opera isn't dominating, especially when that space opera goes out of its way to challenge its fan base.

Raghu Seetharaman The Rock and Kevin Hart are the two biggest draws a movie can have right now, And it’s actually good so it’s not that outrageous. That on top of this being a divisive Star Wars that a lot of people have not liked so word of mouth isn’t helping Star Wars either. Any other Star Wars movie would be shocking but I’m not that surprised this one isn’t dominating the box office

I tried watching Jumanji a week after its release thinking, "There's no way it'll be a full room." And sure enough, it was full. Second time, full. Third time I made sure to get there extra early to get a seat and even that room pretty much filled up. I'm shocked, not even that great of a movie. I enjoyed Ferdinand way more.
Also, I think Jumanji would have made even more if Star Wars wasn't taking up all the rooms. There were so little showings of other movies because Star Wars would take up literally half of the showtimes.

To respond to a topic that I could not feel more directed at me and what I commented yesterday about smaller films not being shown in very many theaters in rural Nebraska- it's just bad luck for me. Living in the middle of Nebraska means small, independent films are not going to be shown at the theaters around me because the theaters have to get the wide audience type films and I can't fault them on that. I'm just complaining because it sucks. I realize that. I plan on moving when I can.

No one expected TLJ to do TFA numbers don't try to kid yourselves into thinking Disney would be happy with it's numbers. Yes, it's obviously going to make them a great profit, however it clearly didn't do as well as they'd hoped it would. It's going to makes about $700 million less that TFA, less than 20% more than Rogue One and was incredibly divisive among fans. If Solo is crap then Disney will be really worried for IX. Especially since there's not really a big hook to get people excited for it.

Update: As of 11:20AM EST on Tuesday, 1/9/2018, the average rating on RT for The Greatest Showman is 6/10 with a 56% Tomatometer. So the Tomatometer is rotten, but the average rating is fresh. So, yeah, RT isn't exactly helping with this movie. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm thinking about it because of the good word of mouth. Thanks, Dan and Roth!

Dan, you don't need to apologise for L.A. getting all of the limited release movies. It's not your fault that the Oscar's require a movie to appear on screen in L.A. to be nominated.

Poe Dameron is the only new character I have any interest in. If Finn was the force sensitive one, he’d have my interest as well. I mean, c’mon, why would you not have a character go from stormtrooper to a fucking Jedi. Huge opportunity missed.

Kevin Hart had a whole Instagram apocalypse now / heart of darkness breakdown while filming. The jungle was full of bugs and he hates bugs and the rock kept messing with him. Great behind the scenes footage

TFA and TLJ are more comparable to Avengers and Age of Ultron because they had movies in between. The movie in between is the one that benefits ie. Rogue One and Iron Man 3.

    • @cjwrench07

phlynx68 how? It seemed to go beyond the simple answer most of the time for me.
Like, why did Luke go looking for the first temple? Then they added in what would have been, a broken man’s reaction, to everything he made and loves being destroyed by a family member; and finally, how do you write out a major cast member who wants out of the franchise? as Hamill’s F&F have insinuated before&after TFA.
I found this whole movie didn’t take the easy answer; but still followed the SW:TESB guide of the good guys don’t get everything they want and essentially lose, but they get away in the end with renewed hope.

    • @phlynx68

quite a few things, leia suddenly becoming a super jedi flying through space, if ghosts can cast lightning why don't they fight the first order
:P, gravity in space.... I mean come on! he seemed to make force powers up(director) as he needed them for the plot. if you can use light speed as a weapon what the hell were they waiting for lol just turn one of the smaller ships around and let em have it. Admiral Holdo withholding information just for the hell of it ect ect over all it just wasn't a GOOD movie imo anyway :P it was ok at best
