    Hey everyone - Roth and I realized right after we finished recording that we didn't mention or take into account repeat viewing as a factor in some of the franchise ticket sales we mention. Just wanted to point it out here and save all of you some work in the comments section! We''ll make sure to loop back around and address it when we revisit the data. Thanks for watching! - Dan

    Although I love hearing you guys speculate on how confused Avengers only viewers are while watching these movies, you have to consider that some people are watching the other movies at home and only showing up to the theaters for the big Avengers book ends. This charting was awesome, can't wait for next week

    • @jermhoosierfan
      @jermhoosierfan 5 років тому +7

      Marvel movies are usually broadcast on TBS or TNT or the like before a Marvel movie is released, and that is not including renting it or watching it on a streaming service. They aren't hard to find, and you don't really need to go to the theater to see them although I have.

    • @dravenuk
      @dravenuk 5 років тому +4

      Exactly. It isn't much of a mystery. I know quuite a few people who don't bother theatrically with most Marvel films but will go see an Avengers flick, watching the rest on streaming or bluray etc. Lots of ways to watch movies nowadays.

    • @djsundowner
      @djsundowner 5 років тому +3

      Plus the Avengers movies (at least the first and third) lent themselves to repeat viewings, so while 60 million+ tickets were sold, it wasn't to 60 million+ different people.

      My thoughts as well but there are instances where it's not possible.. for example I saw Infinity War and I didn't watch Black Panther because it wasn't out on dvd.. the same goes with Captain Marvel and Avangers Part 2

      It's a Bollywood movie. India is the second most populous country in the world. If you factor in Australians of Indian origin, Indians working there on a visa, students studying there and just tourists visiting Australia, it a to make sense. Plus apparently it is a sequel to another movie with the same lead which itself was a phenomenon. It's starts making sense.
      Plus just the people who just have to watch a superhero movie after venom yet before Spider-verse and aquaman.

    Here’s my take on why the Avengers averaged so high despite the lower performance of the other franchises: people can still rent movies from Amazon, or stream them, Netflix has even had every phase 3 film on the service at one point. Avengers however, are treated as events that everyone has to see, with more advertising and hype. Especially with phase 1, Marvel wasn’t an established brand yet, and relied a lot on word of mouth, which for a lot of people means renting, borrowing, or waiting to watch it on TV, for people to see them. It doesn’t matter if you don’t see Doctor Strange or the Thor movies in theaters because they come out on DVD long before Avengers, the ones that people see in theaters.
    As such if you ever want to return to this idea on another slow week at the box office I suggest seeing what the franchise with the greatest DVD/Blu-ray sales are. I know that this will skew towards newer franchises and that these numbers are mostly a mystery, and also isn’t BoxOffice related but I think it would be an interesting measure of what franchises people choose to own and bring into their home
    Great episode as always Roth and Dan. I loved it!

    With me, the Avengers films got much more repeat viewings than any of the other Marvel movies, so if that's true for a lot of people, that might help to explain the discrepancy in ticket sales. Just a thought.

    My roommate is one of those 'Avengers only' people. My excitement for Infinity war was soo infectious that my roommate wanted to watch it as well. It wasn't until we were walking to the Theatre that I realized the ONLY other MCU movie she had seen was Black Panther (which I had also taken her to). I had ~25 minutes to give her a crash course in all the important characters and where the most recent movies - like Thor Ragnarok- had ended.

    About the Avengers thing, I feel like there are a couple factors you might have not considered- while I’m sure there ARE lots of people who only watch those, it might also be that the Avengers movies are so much more of an event than the individual ones that more tickets are sold as 1) way more people watch them more than once in theaters than the solo films, and 2) a lot of people (including me a lot of the time) don’t see the solo films as being as urgent to watch as the team ups so they can wait to watch those until they’re on DVD or even Netflix to catch up on them because going to the theater is expensive and time consuming so many people reserve that specialty for the huge event that is the team up films

    Dan, I will watch you talk about as many charts in as many videos as you want to make. Franchises, genres, directors, "movie star" actors. I think this is a great idea for the slow box office weeks and I love how much you enjoy sifting through the numbers.

    Mr. Dan Murrel: that was the most fascinating look at franchises. Even with the success of the MCU, I would have guessed 007 would be number one on total tickets sold, but now you have the numbers stating my guess was wrong. Amazing work, sir!

    Please continue with these numbers, they are interesting and can be split in so many different ways

    I am one of the people that confuses Roth. I saw Iron Man, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and the last Avengers in the theater. I have seen more streaming, but not the two Iron Man's, first two Thors, etc.
    I did watch Cram It before watching Infinity War. I am just not a big enough superhero fan to slog my way through them all.

    I'd love to hear you comment on Crazy Rich Asians' flop debut in China. Interesting lack of overlap.

    Was the Adam West Batman movie counted in the franchise? I didn't see it in the posters screen and just curious.
