    9 times out 10 times I prefer fan posters over the official ones. They feel so safe without taking bold stylistic risks. Have this design by committee rather than an artist using it to entice the audience. I walk by a wall of them at the cinema and pretty rare that ones catches my eye.

    It’s hilarious that Bohemian Rhapsody was panned by critics but loved by audiences because the band themselves were the same. Most people now probably don’t know because Queen is so beloved now, but back in the day the British press used to always diss on Queen. Critics just don’t seem to get it. Maybe they never will.

    • @samloveslfc
      @samloveslfc 5 років тому +2

      Queen and the critics never did see eye to eye, so not surprised that the movie is the same. It was always more about the fans/band synergy and the critics never got that. Personally I think most critics (not all) need the stick up their arses removed and to have someone beat some sense into them with it.

    • @brianjones8432
      @brianjones8432 5 років тому +9

      The main reason it's being panned is because it's a fluff piece. Which I guess is fine, I didn't hate the film, but it was loaded with historical inaccuracies and outright omissions. It's like a larger budgeted VH1 movie of the week that doesn't get the story right for the sake of a contrived feelgood narrative and story convenience....... Most of the critics have very valid complaints about it. It's still worth seeing, just don't go thinking it's an accurate telling of the story.

    • @kevinschultz6091
      @kevinschultz6091 5 років тому +4

      @@brianjones8432 - the other (big, IMO) reason for critics giving it a "meh" is that it's a fantastic music video interspersed by a mediocre, cookie-cutter music histography that doesn't really fit into the reality of either the band or of Freddy Mercury as a person. (which plays into your point about historical accuracy).
      Also, many critics pointed out that there seemed to be a meta-compromise going on behind the scene with the living members of the band, who have the rights to the music - that they would be given screentime and have their side of the story told, even if the Freddy Mercury side of things was (agruably) WAY more interesting.

      they had to move the events around to keep the movie going since it was only 2 hours long. brian and roger approved of this change and it was considered a creative decision. they can't exactly fit 20 years of success into a 2 hour film. if they approved of this change then it's good for me!

    Maybe it’s just me but I don’t find there’s much artistry put into movie posters anymore. Big studios need to get creative with their posters again. I can’t imagine people will want to frame these posters and show them off 10/20 years down the line the same that people do of posters from the 80s and earlier. Not that that is their goal but still, it’s unfortunate they can’t really be looked at as their own separate art form anymore.

    Bohemian Rhapsody will crush A Star is Born in the International box office. The international music scene is somewhat different to the US, and many British bands are way bigger internationally than Americans may realize. In US sales, people ranging from Tim McGraw to Kenny Rogers to Barbara Streisand have all sold more units than Queen - this is _not_ the case internationally. (Lady Gaga has not though). Practically everyone in Asia knows Queen, while I seriously doubt that more than a few hundred listen to Garth Brooks (the biggest selling American artist of all time in the US). BR is going to do well worldwide.

    Some of those posters actually really stand out though. Ant-Man and the Wasp, Last Jedi, Thor Ragnarok and probably also A Wrinkle In Time posters all stand out. The rest really don't.
    The problem isn't with the overall direction of any of those posters, but with the execution of the specifics. I just said the Ant-Man poster stands out. It does. It also looks fantastic. But it does a terrible job of conveying what the movie is. The only great poster there is really the Last Jedi one, which looks amazing and actually hints at the movie you're getting.
    Black Panther and Guardians 2 posters both capture the feel of the films (as does Ragnarok), despite (IMO) not being all that nice to look at or necessarily standing out at all. Beauty and the Beast also does a pretty good job of selling the movie. The only real poster that has an easy job is Infinity War - you can never make a poster with all those people on it look good, so just cram 'em all in there and have Thanos loom over them. Perfect.
    Damn that Last Jedi poster is good tho.

Anyone who's a Queen fan should just go in knowing it's far from a true telling of the tale. That said, Malek was good as well as the rest of the cast. I tolerated the Jim Carrey Grinch film: I've NO reason to see the animated nightmare, mostly as a) I grew up with the Karloff animated version, which follows its source material, and b) if you're gonna cast Benedict Cumberbatch as a Voice Over role, with a film known for a British accent voice (Karloff), LET HIM SPEAK NORMALLY. They may as well have just brought in Steve Carrell.

    The house of the impenetrable Disney seems to be finally starting to losing some of its bricks. I love Disney, always have, ever since I was a child.... I adore their animated features, I particularly love the Marvel offerings.... but this needed to happen. They’ve been monopolising the industry for far too long.... the industry was in danger of being swallowed up by them. Hopefully, we’ll get a breather now from the overload of milking franchises more than a jersey cow!!

      Not really. They're still on track to break the record for biggest year at the box office for a single studio, or if not they'll get very close, and they own the current record anyway. Disney will finish the year around $8billion worldwide, double what WB will finish with. As for monopolising, Disney only release 8-10 movies a year, around half what the other major studios release. Just because they focus on fewer movies that are all tentpoles and have turned that into a success does not mean they have a monopoly. WB still own more IP's than Disney, they just keep flopping (Tomb Raider, DCEU, Blade Runner 2049, Lego Ninjago etc). If other studios release more movies with IP's that are just as big but have less success because the movies simply aren't as good, then that's not Disney's fault.

      Pretty sure this will just make Disney more cautious and rely on there franchise films and there live action cash cows.
      Next year will offset any losses of this year. I mean Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, Aladdin, lion King, Dumbo.
      That is not even mentioning any of the Marvel/Star Wars films

      Andrew Murray true words indeed Andy! Marketing aside, their line up is incredibly impenetrable. I can’t wait to see what they do with the Lion King, I have an inkling it’s going to bury any worries people have of it tarnishing the beloved original.

    I saw The Miseducation of Cameron Post at Sundance and Boy Erased at the Austin Film Festival this year, and I have to completely disagree with Roth on this one. I found that Miseducation was way too on the nose and really a disappointingly generic telling of such an important story, where I found Boy Erased accomplished subtly and with love all the things Miseducation was trying to do. It's so interesting that two people can see the same movies and have completely different responses. Neither film is bad in my opinion, I just found Boy Erased on a completely higher level. That's just my thoughts. I hope everyone sees these films. And enjoys them. :)
    Also love the poster comparison. Could be a new segment. How every genre of film makes the same looking posters (Disney now being their own genre I suppose). All the rom-com leads standing back to back and so on.

    Wow...seeing Disney's posters together like that looked HORRIBLE. Their MCU posters especially looked lazy as hell next to one another, lots of recycled poses and colors. I find all of them ugly too, it's just a mass of faces in order for no stars to be left out, like god forbid someone isn't on it...I actually want to go back to a time where posters were their own form of art and you actually wanted to buy them to hang on your wall! Less faces and more concepts or themes, sell the MOVIE, not the damn star budget!

    The marketing problem with Nutcracker isn't the samey-ness of the poster, it's that they didn't actually do a damn thing. I saw the trailer in a theater only once, not a single TV commercial, and absolutely no buzz anywhere.
    Also, I think Mary Poppins isn't going to be anywhere near as successful as Dan & Roth et al are hyping it up to be. I'm sure it'll make bank but I'm highly doubtful it'll be something people go crazy over or even remember in 4 months after its release.
    Oh, and The Grinch will be a total shit pile.

You're clearly making a complaint and implying the release of so many superhero movies is impairing other films which is scarcely the case. Like you said in your OP, Disney released 4 this year. That's only 4 films in less than a 12 year span versus how many movies come out in a given month? You can go see other movies literally anytime you want.
