You know you hit it big when McDonald's sponsors your channel.
Chronos Havok Well, Thanos does look like Grimace.
Nah not mcdonalds just that one soecific burger
Too bad it sucks now
Another Monday which means another day closer to the meg.
Dread it. Run from it. The Meg still arrives.
The Meg--it started as a joke, but after all of the talk on SJU, I'm actually gonna go see it.
Stephen H. Howes I'm weirdly excited about The Meg, too. I want The Meg to rake in all the money on opening weekend. And while the mainstream media is scratching their heads, we'll know it's all because of SJU.
JCIce007 😂
Stephen H. Howes I’m ready for this.
Dan gets so excited about numbers and Roth is super knowledgeable. You’re both a great team
Thanks to Mcdonalds for the sponsership here. Please help keep this channel alive.
If Disney does buy Warner, we need a "Finding Meg" movie.
Warner Bros made The Meg, not Fox.
Steven Vo fixed
Nachiket Naik funny
Steven Vo the Meg-an Fox
Charting with Dan has become a staple of my week :) And Roth's enthusiasm for the Meg is contagious XD Now I am excited to see it too..!
Antman and the Meg is the greatest thing I have heard all year. That is amazing.
He's Brolin in the dough
canderia Brolin in the deep
Ayyyyyy
I LOVED game night! Me and my dad decided to check it out at the theater and we both really enjoyed it. Glad to see that it was more successful than I thought it was.
roth there are never enough puns in this show
Your guys' reaction to 50 Shades dropping out was hilarious! And I'm totally on the same page with Roth when it comes to sports vs sports movies, I love me a damn football movie LOL I'm a huge freakin' sucker for Friday Night Lights.
LOVE Friday Night Lights! -- Roth
I can’t believe that Solo still hasn’t been able to pass 50 shades in the top 10 worldwide chart.
You Were Never Really Here needs to get more attention. Another superb performance by Joaquin Phoenix, and tremendous directing/screenplay by Lynne Ramsay.
rhythmoriented it's my favourite movie of this year
Ps Paddington 2 if you count it this year
Leo MGTOW DiCaprio yea. The film was NOT created for mass consumption. The narrative was visual (think Refn, Malick or even Sofia Coppola), heavy on symbolism and with a generous use of flashbacks. All of these visually-driven directors have masterworks, and I think we might welcome Lynne Ramsay to the club.
the biggest surprise of the summer would be if the meg turned out to be an incredibly heartfelt action drama about the importance of animal rights. regardless, i can't wait for the meg!
mus7c ❤️😂
Animal rights? You know its a giant shark eating people right? I dont think Any normal person would feel bad if they kill the shark...
Game night is one of my favorite comedies. That hit status is well deserved
charting with dan is the best screen junkies show.
In other words superhero movie genre is single-handedly saving Hollywood.
Give me all the Dan, all day long. He is why I got into the Schmodown. Collider plug ftw. lol
Howard Clarke Dan the Man Murrel
There are a number of great crossover possibilities.
Meg and Prejudice. At a ball, Elizabeth Bennet (Jason Statham) forms an immediate dislike for a wealthy, massive prehistoric shark. While Bennett forms an immediate dislike of the gigantic sea predator, over time the kindness of the truly colossal sea beast wins over Bennett's heart and the two are engaged.
Citizen Meg. Immediately off the coast of a massive Florida estate, we find the last of a nearly extinct species of giant shark left over from the Pliocene, seemingly with anything and everything a giant killer animal might have wanted out of life. As he holds an artificial heart in his fin, the shark quietly whispered "Chev Chelios" and dies. On shore a newsreel tells the story of how the shark terrorized beaches and islands and ships for decades. A reporter on the newsreel gives a reporter the assignment to discover the secret of Chev Chelios. That reporter: Jason Statham.
This is my favourite comment.
I didn't even need to finish reading this to know that I love this comment! You had me at Meg and Prejudice, lol!
16:55 - Love that you guys addressed the overlooked successes.
A half a year ago it would have been considered crazy to think that a small horror movie will almost outgross a star wars movie. And yet, here we are.
The Meg came out of nothin to undo all of Marvel’s hard work. This film is just... I have no words
The Leg Award should be the Leg Lamp from Christmas Story.
Year of the Brolin
Jarrett Phillips year of Baustista too. Avengers: Infinity War, Hotel Artemis and Escape Plan 2: Hades.
Dan and Roth's excitement for The Meg makes me happy lol
Been waiting all day for this!
Y'all, The Meg still hasn't arrived, that will take all the box office! (Fight me)
The Summer Movies for 2018 really was the best unless 2019 tops 2018. Majority of the success is to the Superhero genre film.
Ikr The 3 biggest movies of this year were all Disney superhero movies and the 2 biggest flops this year were 2 non-superhero Disney films.
The most profitable studio this year released 3 superhero films this year, which were Disney's 3 most profitable movies.
The second most profitable studio released 1 superhero movie this year which was their most profitable movie.
The third most profitable studio this year released a movie with a Batman and Batgirl cameo(Ready Player 1) and 2 Superman mentions which was WB's most profitable movie this year.
The fourth, fifth and sixth most profitable studios this year released 0 superhero films.
@ Raghu Best in terms of the domestic gross or quality?
Hackman it's crazy to think Disney has a chance to have *3* 600m domestic grossers in one year. That's insane. They are really saving the cinema ticket sales wise.
@ David Ruddle Same question as before: Best in terms of what?
My love for you two and your puns and your stats is truly endless. Love love love the concept of the leggies and the sneaky hits and sneaky flops! Please bring that back at your end of year roundup
Holy crap....dan isn’t wearing a Florida State hat!
Yeah! And it's a Winchester Mystery House hat instead! I think he gave a bad review to that movie but got a nice hat out of the screening
I loved the second Ant-Man more, than the first one. And one shouldn't know the entire MCU to enjoy it.
How come I just I noticed that Dan is wearing a slightly different hat than normal yet didn't notice it in today's SJU
Although that's how you know you watch too much SJU. No regrets.
onequartercanadian yeah im just so used to the FSU hat I automatically assume hes wearing it... didnt notice it wasnt till I saw ur comment
I also detected the different hat. There’s a disturbance in the force.
I enjoyed Fallen Kingdom more than I thought I would. Low expectations ftw.
Genuine feels when they sailed away from that long neck.
Chronos Havok Long neck is my favorite one, that scene was sadder than infinity war.
BryanXD09 True. They dragged it on a bit too long though.
Long neck? It’s either an apatosaurus or a brachiosaurus guys lol. Don’t tell me you’ve still been calling them that all these years since Land before time lol.
Really...because I almost laughed at the attempt to get me to feel for the death of a completely CGI creature to a CGI volcano with the Pratt and Howard stares.
As a die-hard JP fan, my eyes watered at that scene both times I saw the film. It hit me harder the second time for some reason and I just read today that J.A. Bayona confirmed that the Brachiosaurus on the dock was the same one that Alan and Ellie first came across in the first film. Jesus, J.A., add some more salt to the wound, why don't you? lol
Game night!
The meg was going to be one of the movies that just passes by the theatre for me. But I'm going to watch it now because of all this megtalk 😂.
Anyone else in the same boat?
Did you just...?
Y'may need a bigger boat...
If you like the idea of The Meg vs Gigantic Jason Statham, you should watch Batman Ninja!
Awesome charting video!!! Charting with Dan and Roth makes my Mondays!!! Thank you!!!
I thought this Jurassic World was the best in the franchise since the original Jurassic Park. I would have been in favor of this getting the box office the last one enjoyed. I didn't really care for the last one.
mjamitche5 I agree with you.
Great reporting as always, keep it up!
You guys could do with a ScreenJunkies Pun Jar - think of all the money you could garner for good (or evil) purposes
But great video as always making what could be dull number crunching into fun and interesting content
Nice arrested development reference at the end dan
I just saw the documentary Whitney. Very good. Recommended.
You should do a Screenies style award show at the end of the year for the best/worst etc grossing movies. You can call it the Grossies.
Love the chemistry between Dan and Roth. Also, there’s never enough puns in the show. No worries, Roth.
if the meg doesn't have jason statham punch the shark, you guys should crowd fund and make a version of that movie that is written by the fans.
YES i loved Game Night! The Leggies is a great awards name and excellent puns this show
'in the running' is genius
Damn it Dan I’m hook on charting with ya lol!! I never knew I needed this in my life 🎬⭐️🤩
I actually just saw Isle of Dogs on saturday (it's playing at a local, small-ish town theater where it's $3 per seat and there's literally only one screen with kinda shitty sound) with a friend who is also half Japanese, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I really enjoyed it. My friend had already seen it a few times (it's why we went lol), and it was like a warm hug as dog lovers and mixed Japanese people (the kid who voiced the main human character Atari is also half Japanese so that was nice as well). I'm glad it did well in the per-screen average on it's opening weekend.
Great show guys! Very interesting number breakdowns indeed. Do you feel like the gigantic superhero openings inflating the box office is kind of a cheat? This is a good year so far for sure, but it's mostly because of the gigantic superhero openings and one dinosaur movie. Where as 15 to 20 years ago, the box office was much more evenly distributed between all types of films. Has this been the best year yet for all film or just the best year for five movies?
The Meg has to be enjoying these free promos
In a slow weekend PLZ do a statistic analysis about how many people go to the same movie multiple times!!!!
my over simplified opinion (for example) is that the same people watched SOLO and Black Panther, but the second one had MULTIPLE viewing
keep up the good job
Watching this a day late but I just wanted to say that for the 3rd week in a row, my cousin and I were going to go see Oceans 8 on $5 Tuesdays with AMC and it's been sold out all three weeks. This week we did manage to get seats but there were only 3 to choose from. I feel like this is a great example of how people will go see more movies if the tickets cost less. I have no problem seeing big blockbuster movies at full price like Infinity War but without $5 Tuesdays or Moviepass I probably wouldn't have gone to see Oceans 8. Not cause it looked bad or anything but I just don't have the extra money to watch every movie I want to see.
i love these videos!
I could listen to Dan and Roth riff for hours...
Love the shout-out to Hard Rain. Love that movie.
I had fun with Hurricane Heist. It was like what if they made an entire movie out of the end of Twister.
People actually turn up to Solo quite a lot. We’ve had more busy screens at my cinema than we had when it was released. They are our medium-size screens, but they’re about 2/3 of the bigger ones, so it’s still pretty shocking for us, we were almost ready to kick it out of the programme and now we added a couple of shows.
It wasn't such a bad movie after all. Much better than expected and definitely better than one particular overhyped movie this year.
I went to go see Solo in mid June, and my theater was almost full.
Haven't thought of Hard Rain since i saw it in the theatre 🤔😂
Roth, I'm confident Jason punched that giant shark because their was a megalodon jaw at my local aquarium this weekend. Had to have gotten there somehow! ;) Thanks as always, Dan and Roth!
By the by, I'm glad "Solo" got at least one sold out theatre. It's really not that bad a picture. I liked it. Many friends and family of mine liked it, too. Sure, Disney needs to break out their toolbox on this franchise, but I've seen worse movies.
Maybe that Solo screening was at a second-run theater?
Having read The Meg novel back in the day, it had an insane ending that, if they keep it, will be as ridiculous as Roth and Dan are hoping
Nitpick: "Mano a mano" means hand to hand... so perhaps "Mano a 'fin-o'" would have been a better pun when discussing a shark-sized Jason Statham fighting the Meg...
Going back to my corn flakes now
Movie Pass is increasing box office for sure, people are seeing movies they wouldn't normally go to.
You could easily argue the complete opposite of that as well. Good movies that don't have the viewers get more views, resulting in better movies being seen.
I....I want to watch The Meg but......but I don't want to give them money...
:internally freaks out:
What do I do?!
M. peraza Buy a ticket for another movie and sneak into The Meg.
M. peraza why don't you want to give them money? Jw
M. peraza just pirate it
Pirate it
@16:05 ! Dan coins it ‘sweep-the-leg’!! 🙏
Best UA-cam channel
Great recap.
That ad was jarring, I can already see the benefits of your being purchased by fandom still love the show still can't wait to see what you guys have to say.
The combined market share of 47.8% scares me.
I don't know if Dan could do that, and if it's interesting but a chart that links the social buzz and the grossing. Or something similar but with the number of views in trailer. And with that to expand and predict some hits in the other half of the year.
Fun fact. The Meg started prouduktion at disney in 1997 but nothing happened to the project so disney sold it to time warner in 2006. There eli roth tried to make a meg movie but the studio didnt want a meg movie with an R rating so the project fall apart.
Disney has the hits and flops
I'm so psyched that killing eve is getting some press lately!!! I loved it so much, I can't wait until it's available to stream in aus,,,,
Best show on youtube.
Lot of comic book movies, including Death of Stalin, which is based on a French comic book.
So far, the only discernible difference since the Fandom acquisition seems to be the addition of hamburgers...
...and I'm ok with that.
In the UK hurricane heist came out as a straight to sky cinema original (sky is the tv in the UK) so it’s like a Netflix original also going into cinema
Yes! Giant Jason VS Meg!
I need a giant Jason Statham fighting a shark. The Meg will solve the world's problems without question!
All I remember from The Hurricane Heist was after the trailer everyone in the theater laughed at it. Not with it. . . AT it. That's how I knew it would bomb.
Hurricane Heist was straight to TV in the UK.
Ladies and Gentlemen- the Legs Award! Awesome
Josh Brolin was great in Inherent Vice and I feel like no one has seen that movie.
the super hero phase is just like the monster movie phase
Hurricane heist, Hard Rain meets Twister, i liked it, nothing fantastic but fun and interesting enough :)
I didn’t see it but wasn’t Geostorm a hurricane heist?
The charties!
I absolutely loved peter rabbit
Also. I'm so mad that Paddington 2 didn't do better. It was so ernestly amazing.
Peter Rabbit is STILL in Cinemas here in NZ!
Carl Wells and DVD too lol saw it at the movies then bought the DVD a week later from the warehouse
Can you folks comment on the marketing budgets for these movies? Or is that already included in your budget numbers? I ask because I thought the marketing costs are a non-trivial percentage of the cost of the film.
The MEG should be Awesome/dumb like Pacific Rim, pure popcorn brain shut down and enjoy Jason vs giant Shark. Its on my top 10 summer list (at #10).
Roth: solo was sold out
Dan: where!?!?!?
Poor solo
How do these "top per screen averages" compare to last year's top "per screens"? 60k seems low... I remember some really high ones last year
Sadie Holloway agree. I remember clearly that The Big Sick per screen at one point was 87,000
Sadie Holloway I think towards awards season, they'll get much higher
I loved Game Night
Dan, you need to modify your shirt and change "Jaws" to "The Meg" - keep all else the same. Pin, tape, do something. Wear as you usually do, don't bring any attention to it, so it's sort of an ester egg.
Can't wait to see Sicario 2!
Technically and factually, Avengers: Infinity War can't be included in the summer release films. Doesn't matter if it's original release date was in May.
I know me and my sister will be going to see Ant-Man and The Wasp and I would think many people would see it just to see how it connects to Infinity War and Avengers 4. Although, people may just wait till home release or Netflix release to see it.
My favorite sports movie is 1977 filmed called slap shot its really great sport/violent comedy film
