Planning a trip to halfmoon bay in July. Do you have any idea what species are there and what rigs should I use? I’m trying to catch as many species as possible so I don’t care about the size of the fish as long as it’s a new species
The small wooden pier at the harbor is probably your best bet for most species. Fish a dropper loop rig with small hooks tipped with shrimp around the rocks and pilings. You'll likely get a bunch of species of rockfish and perch. You could also try the beaches around there with a carolina rig with gulp sandworms or sandcrabs for barred, calico, or redtail perch
Should work well, I've used size 14 with no issues. You may catch a lot of the small shiner perch, but that's a gold-plated problem if you are targeting perch anyways! (Shiners are prime live bait for halibut too)
Thanks for watching my video! The great thing about perch fishing is that you can catch them at any pier. If you don't know where to start, torpedo wharf is a popular spot in SF.
Thanks for watching! "In San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, the aggregate limit is five surfperch, not including shiner surfperch. For all other areas, the aggregate limit is 20 surfperch, not including shiner surfperch. Not more than 10 surfperch may be of any one species." Striped perch do not have a size limit
But we be catching the monsters perch from the surf if you ever in SoCal don't miss out and fish the beach is always better and there is not always just monster perch we also be catching always something big and interesting not Just shark or rays lately I've been pulling up halibut to calicos Crockers and they haven't been small at all giant version of everything it's so weird to me because it was so rare back then
I’ve been using this technique for quite a while, this vid is super informational and well explained. 👍
Just found a school of perch today and took your advice with the shrimp and sabiki rig, nonstop bites! So fun
That's awesome, I'm glad the video was useful! So much fun when you can get on a good school
Great video! I'm constantly impressed by how knowledgeable you are on this topic.
For sure

Never fished there myself - there might still be some striper hanging around, otherwise there should be good perch fishing at the docks
Any recommendations for bringing my boys for a good spot

@@sf_angler awesome thank you! Do you have any suggestions for night fishing as well?
I have some sabikis but the hooks are pretty small. Do you think they will still work? I think they are meant for like anchovies etc.

Can you do this in san Francisco if so which pier? Thank You
You can catch perch at every pier in San Francisco! The Municipal Pier is one of my favorites.
Is Redtail surfperch fishing still easy to you recently? Subbed +1!
Thank you for watching and subscribing! Redtails don't usually live around piers but they are commonly caught in the surf year-round 👍

Thank you for subscribing! I hope to fish SoCal one day, seems like everything gets bigger down there!
Halibut bait???
Live shiner perch are some of the best halibut baits! Small walleye surfperch work well for big halibut too.

The best perch bait is grass shrimp
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the tip! I've heard grass shrimp work well - haven't had the chance to use them yet but I'll have to try them out!
Also they work the best for delta striper that is a secret no joke I caught two 20 inch striped bass in 5 minutes at the delta.
@@ihavenoname7983 No way! I gotta try them now. Thanks for the info!
