- Pier/Wharf fishing is not nearly as popular among avid fishermen. However, it can be quite fun! It is crazy how much diversity there is in such a small area! How many species have you caught in a single spot?

Aquarium hobby: This is a $30 fish.
Fishermen: This is free bait.
I have a stressful job. I like to watch one (or more commonly part of one) of your videos while I quickly gulp down a microwave meal before getting back to work - they are all relaxing. Keep it up.
This is completely, thoroughly, angler-enjoyment-watching happy.
Thanks!
Since pier fishing is more accessible to new fishers, maybe you can do a series focusing on the fundamentals of pier fishing. How to set a hook, types of baits and hooks, line weight, rigs, etc
I just started fishing, and I'm always looking for some tips on Cali fishing, especially from piers. Maybe one day I'll get a kayak, but pier is more practical. Watching the vets bringing in huge catches on the pier is a mystery to me on how they do it.
If you keep doing pier fishing, I'll definitely watch and share with my fishing buds
Yes he needs to because it’s different than other type of states like florida it’s more active there than California
Thanks for sharing info about the different characteristics of those fish you catch, both in this video and your other surf & kayaking fun.
Also, like the close-ups & explanations you add regarding the way you set up your gear for different approaches. This channel is my #1 choice.
That's cool Adam, looked relaxing... Digging the angles with the background tunes. Look foward to the next one. Cheers man!🤙🍻
Thanks 👍
I enjoy all your videos! I would like to see more of these pier fishing ones, I love how you explain your gear setup and especially how you explain each species of fish you catch. Great video! Bonus that it’s easy for you bcuz it’s much appreciated how hard it must be to get videos out to us like you do! 😉👍
Piers have such a rich history in California. So glad that they still exist. Crystal pier was my old stomping ground. 😎
Thanks for the tips. The youtubes is the only teacher I have and you fish the coastal areas I visit so I look forward to fishing them with new found knowledge.
Tight lines and safe times! Nothin better than relaxing fishing! Thank you!
More pier videos please. This one was great. Thanks 😊 for your videos they've been very helpful!!
Great Video and I enjoyed seeing what you caught. Been thinking of going fishing myself out here in southern California. Just not sure where to go. Keep up the good work!
A change in fishing methods is sometimes relaxing and enjoyable, nice video 🎣🐟🐟🐟
Nice educational video, Adam! Good job!
Fantastic video buddy! I’m headed down to catch some Spanish and sheepshead next week 👍👍👍🎣
You bring back so many childhood memories for me. I grew up 6 miles from Belmont Pier in Longbeach CA. Back in the '70's we would catch monster sargo Perch around the pier. I'm glad to have found your channel. We always seem to catch monster barred Perch in the dead of winter surf fishing. Be safe always
I would be into some more kick back on a pier vids because its all good!
That little thumping sound is him dying while you talk and talk and talk...LOL
Fish drumming is a reflex action out of the water . No hook is actually beneficial but they survive just fine after released and their stocks numbers are also quite high. No big worries doing catch and release on these.
Great video man that was cool that you did A pier video. Alot of people don't know about that.
Legit vid Adam. Congrats on going full time with UA-cam. I am a new content creator at UA-cam and you and other west coast UA-camrs have inspired me to start my channel. Very new but I am having a blast. Love what you guys are doing with The Shelter Show.! 💯
Appreciate the kind words. Good luck with your channel!
Love the west coast educational videos thank you
Pier fishing is fun too. Enjoyed your relaxing video. And, no kayak gear to clean today.
Nice vid. I caught a small bat ray in the surf today. This makes me want to go back to the pier to fish.
Absolutely, that would be great love the wharf fishing. Low key. Awesome!
Thank you for that.
IF YOU DON'T CATCH ANYTHING JUST GO TO THE STORE AND BUY SOME FISH.
You and me both!
@@DieHardFishing OR A RESTAURANT IF THINGS EVER GET BACK TO NORMAL😍🥰😘🤗
Capitola pier is the best! glad you enjoyed yourself in our little paradise! might i suggest some Mr. Toots coffee from the village next time you visit? best coffee in all of Santa Cruz!
Don't forget to check the cave for bats! Lol great video, keep up the good work!
Another new thing learned 👍
Good video thank you
Nice video. Relax fishing is the best.
I got to capitola peir all the time! My favorite spot to chill on the dock. They do live music on the weekends at the end restaurant. Soooooo relaxing
Chilliest video, Adam is so zen
Yes to more pier fishing!! ;)
Nice relaxing video👍 it’s like fishing from the bank but obviously on a pier. Where you using only sand crabs for bait? Have you tried to catch any different species of fish using bait from the shore other than what we are known to seeing?
The pier you're at reminds me of a dream I once had.
you cant hide from me squidward....lol
Nice day in Capitola! I liked the change of pace.
Nice change of pace 😁
Thanks for naming the species. I had no idea we had that many different kinds of surf perch.
Very educational
Cool video....Pier fishing is the best and you can bring people without licenses....Cheers Jeff
Any form of fishing is relaxing 👍
Cool video, wharf fishing can be under rated, used to fish San Luis Obispo back in the day, super relaxing.
Couldn't agree more!
Great fishing Master fish on
That surf perch hit so hard 🤣
Excellent handling it would seem so very well done!
Had friend hook into sturgeon off the pier
Hello, gotta ask where you got your Shimano convergence rod? Can’t seem to find it anywhere I look.
I know exactly which pier you are on 😀 I love fishing on the pier. Don’t really catch anything but a lot of bullheads 🙄 lol but it’s still super relaxing. It’s nice to people watch and just chill out! I would love to see more pier videos. Maybe a challenge? Using different baits and lures would be cool. I saw someone catch a huge striper on a pier before with a lucky craft! I’m totally for the pier videos! Great content! Thanks Adam!
Hey do you know any piers open for crabbinga round the Bay Area my wife and I love going grabbing I got a couple of nets and would love to drive out try to get back to crabbing let me know.
@@eatwithamay4280 PACIFICA PIER OR MUNI PIER?
Hey which pier is this it looks awesome!
May I suggest....when looking back at the camera....look at the lens more and not the LCD screen off to the side. When you look at the lens you’re looking at us and that makes it more personal. I’m sure it’s hard looking at a round piece of glass but it’s just a suggestion
Hey Mark, totally agree! Its always tough to avoid looking at the screen and I am guilty of it. Anyway, I'll keep working at it!
I never say where your fishing, California is a big place.
I love fishing off the pier. I live in socal and usually fish the surf from the pier
Nice release method..👍👍😂😂😂
Just a quick FYI you had a bat in the cave during the intro other than that, keep up the AMAZING work !!
I have never tried fishing from a pier but I enjoy crab snaring. I have asked state sites and not found out. Any idea when they will unlock the piers??
DID YOU GET YOUR CRABS FROM FISHERMAN'S WHARF? ITCHY! ITCHY!!!!!
Is this capitola pier??? Those colorful houses look like houses next to capitola pier.
Wish i live on the coast 😓 I’m in the East bay so its an hour drive for me... don’t got time during weekdays because of traffic and work, weekend stomper! But honestly DHF your videos are always top notch! Keep it up bro! 👌💯💯
Need to get me a kayak but my apartment is small 😂🔨
Where is this? I love pier fishing but the ones near me are all closed.
Great video man. You should add an arrow to show where you're trying to cast.
That's a good idea!
Am I the only one who could not stop staring at the bugger in his nose @24-28 ?
That's a nice fishing pier Aptos
The thornbacks suck to step on. I have stepped on a few surfing. No poison just lots of little cuts that hurt. You can always tell when you step on them
Awesome videos thank you for sharing I am subscribed now will you possibly do a video on how to actually set up a Carolina rig for surf perch please thank you
You were like two miles from my house!
You should do another pier fishing video!!
Wow that is interesting about the the one with those horns on the side of his head.
Fav spot of all time
My first and only time i went to pacifica pier i caught a 19 inch lingcod with some live bait i caught
HOW MANY DECADES AGO WAS T HAT?
@@microminiskirt it was like 2 years ago
@@angeldom6898 THAT'S GREAT. AS YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW FISHING WAS GREAT BACK IN THE DAY. EVEN IN SF BAY WE HAD STRIPPERS GALORE YOU COULD CATCH FROM THE PIERS ON EMBARCADERO LIKE PIER 7, PIER 48, 54 AND MISSION ROCK. NOW YOU CANT GET ANY BITES OR EVEN CATCH A CRAB OR BULLHEAD. ONE USED TO BE ABLE TO CATCH THEIR OWN BAIT USING GOLD HOOKS FOR LIVE ANCHOVIES. THERE WERE TONS OF BAIT FISH AND SHINERS ON THOSE PIERS. YOU DIDN'T NEED A BOAT LIKE TODAY. POLLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT TOOK A TOLL ON ECO SYSTEM. SO NOW THAT'S WHAT WE ARE LEFT WITH TODAY. BY THE WAY BULLHEADS MADE GREAT STRIPPER BAIT. NOW THERE ARE NO MORE BAIT FISHES LIKE SHINERS AND ANCHOVIES. THERE USED TO BE TONS OF THEM YOU COULD SEE ON TOP OF WATER AS WELL AS PERCH, RUBBER LIP PERCH HANGING AROUND TOP OF WATER NEXT TO BARNACLES ON PIER PILINGS.
Thats awesome man! Congrats on the lingcod!
Issa nice specimen
Saturday during the memorial day weekend was the day sardines showed up and the bite went off . water got chewed up a bit post the wild bite but should be good again once the weather clears.
Great video!! I like how you caught 4 different types of fish, all by sitting down and not getting wet.. or losing equipment 🥺 That hurt me.. I would have been tempted to jump in the water..
Question, is the weather still chilly? I'm in Los Angeles.. we've been in the HIGH 90's all week 🥵🥵🥵
It is starting to cool back down now, a few days ago we were also in the 90s
Definitely a change up, but that ray was cool..
Fish on..
Thanks 👍
9:47 Ouch 😅
Caught my all time pb on this pier 👍
Hey man I like your videos a lot. I’m originally from Santa Barbara county. Where was that pier you were fishing at? I started fishing at 3 years old on a pier at a beach called gaviota.
LUV THESE PIER VIDEOS. CAN YOU DO ONE ON SF MUNI PIER?😋😘🥰🤩
People can frown on wharf/pier fishing all they want, but some of us just don't have different options and that is a fact. Thank you for sharing a fun, accessible fishing episode. As much as I want a kayak or boat and to fish deeper in the Puget Sound, I just don't have the endurance for it with an old military injury. Nor can I afford a boat. There was an old fisherman around here in Seattle that used to be an ex-boat owner, but then only pier/shore fished and he'd say, "Do you know what BOAT stands for? Break Out Another Thousand!" I thought that was funny. :) What isn't funny is that we only have 8 piers left in King County/Seattle, WA and the disrepair and closures are not okay. :(
I feel it! Redondo, Elliot bay, other Seattle piers, and closest to me is dash point which really hurts, there’s not too much near Tacoma that’s really that great, there’s les Davis but it isn’t as good there as it used to be 😪
Like how detailed you are with tips on fishing. I recently moved to Southern California and miss the Bay Area, fishing here sucks unless you are on a boat.
Hook Set and Reel ...fishing is WAY better in So.Cal....what pier are you close to,
Suggest Huntington Beach pier...get a couple buckets one with a rope to get salt water and hold live bait ..with a Sabaki rig....get some small mussells off the Pier ...cut them up put tiny pieces on your Sabaki rig and jig up and down for sardines. . Make sure you keep your sardines alive with dripping salt water... With s simple Carolina rig ( egg weight above Barrell swivel three foot leader ...put a live sardine on and about half way out on the Pier throw the sardine UNDER THE PIER!!!!! . I'm from Southern California I Know all the spots! Hit me up if you wanna know. ..fresh water spots too! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California
@@ericunderwood1482 man buddy I went to Huntington beach pier last night and tried cut up anchovies , whole anchovies wrapped with magic string and thread them through. I tried calamari , worms, ghost shrimp and only got sting rays. I have also gone to seal beach and new port and same thing other than catching a shark which I do like but I will tell you this in the bay area you catch surf perch , striped bass , halibut and can also catch shark from the bank. River fishing is great too like striped bass sturgeon, large and small mouth bass and salmon. I think it is easier catching them up North. Any other tips please let me know I may be doing something wrong or trying all the wrong spots.Going to Balboa next weekend and try my luck there.
@@ericunderwood1482 thanks for the tips buddy I will try the live bait next time for sure
@@chalo186ga There's nice halibut UNDER THE PIER! Gotta do a swing under cast....it's still a little early....June thru September is best...also check this out...when your up in the Pier look down the coastline right where the waves break...you'll see brown shallow water and green trenches where the water is like 3-4 ft deep....when you're on HB Pier look south towards Seal .... Huntington Beach Cliffs... Spot Fin Croaker feed in them trenches....same rig smaller weight like half of ounce....catch yourself some small sandcrabs ...some people call them sand fleas....this is important they have to be small ones...no bigger than the tip of your pinky...dime size...Nickle size is almost too big...I Wade around and throw sand crabs in those trenches....Those fish are delicious! ...Sand bass under the Pier too....make sure you drip water into your live bait bucket....it's keeps oxygen in the water...So Cal bait is all about size and being alive.... Blood worms in the breaking surf will produce all the perch you want....and razor clams....you can buy those at Norms Tackle in PCH in Seal Beach...it used to be Norms ...It changed ... My Favorite pier down there to fish is Oceanside...and HB....kind slow now but will pick up soon....Live bait and knowing where to get it is the key to So.Cal...day fishing is best.... mostly Rays and sharks at night.....also the perch hang out close to the Pier pilings....TTYL....PS I live up on the Feather River Right below Oroville dam now....been going from Downey to Oroville all my life....Stay in touch and we'll go to Huntington and fish !
@@chalo186ga PS ...Ghost Shrimp work better down San Diego way...
is this the capitola pier
How did you get your sand crabs without touching the water and sand?
Diehard look very humble dude
I flipped my pontoon RIGHT THERE! right in front of those colorful houses I lost my go pro 7 and a tackle box :( worst day ever in Capitola
Sorry to hear!
I know where that pier is, last time I was there it was closed, glad to see it opened up
What pier? Is this near Santa Cruz?
Clam neck makes an excellent surf bait as well. It's tough, durable, and desirable by surf fish.
Can you do a review on the dark matter rod
Is that the Watsonville or Capitola area in NorCal?
🔥
Thanks. Like a trip to the aquarium with a lesson from one of the marine biologists... you go to school in marine biology?
I also saw a guy rent a paddle bike and go out fishing, he came back with blue ling cod and it was the first time i saw one. I rented it next and have been renting the boats the fish out there evrythime i visit
Usually when someone posts a video where they catch some kind of surprise species, its always fairly underwhelming. In this video I felt like that was an actual surprise catch. I don't think I have ever seen anyone catch a fish like that
Is that at Capitola Pier?
we call it white trout in gulf @ 4:45
Santa Cruz Pier next!!
Wats up Adam? Nice video but damn bro Pier, Sand, Kayak etc.... still hooking up🤔 your so good I bet you can catch a fish without a hook? 🤔😳🤪
I have actually done that already, haha

Aye capitola fam
Nice video, bugger nose!!
Is that the Capitola pier?
Yup
What pier is that
Piers are closed in Southern Cali. :(
This pier in Capitola is great for halibut as well!
