Hot tip. Collect a bunch and flash boil them. They turn orange when done and you can freeze and keep them for a long time. I've had at least the same hookup rate if not better on the cooked orange ones than live. I bet it has something to do with the fact that they are very similar in color to the eggs under them. But it's awesome when they are hard to find
The most likely reason people think they're mushy is that they did what you did.... failed to put them on ice right away! Trout are the same way. I kept a stringer of trout on a stringer in a "cold" lake for hours until I had my limit. When I went to clean them they were mushy. Guys at the cleaning station sold me my error. I learned. I know it's often impractical, but ice is the answer. Nice film! Got my surf perch juices flowing. Heading for Monterey next week... with a fish cooler. :)
You make fishing look so easy. You're just a natural. I've been skunked so many times. But, like they say, a bad day of fishin' beats a good day of anything. Excellent video!
Alan hopefully you brush up on what the holes in the surf look like. Research your spots on low tide for holes n structure and highways for sand crabs and predators . That’s way when your at perfect conditions and rigged correctly you’ll be more productive too 🤘🏼
@@alant.541 remember when surf fishing there eating real close to shore where the sand crabs are many think they need to cast way out to find the fish when there right there in 3 ft and less water depth I've caught huge corbina in inches of water 🚿
I actually met your mom yesterday, she was wearing a Die Hard Fishing shirt, jogging down the beach at Moss. Very nice lady, she is very proud of you ! good luck down south !
Apparently redtail surf perch is the only one that has to be at least 10.5 inches in order not to be hit by fish n game just a heads up for everyone, be safe all and have fun!
We fish the Mendocino coast, where we have Barred perch, Red Tails, Silvers and brown Stripped Perch that hold in the Kelp beds, typically the size of Barred perch, 1 to 2 lbs..
I got a feeling that UA-cam will love the name of the vid and everyone will love the thumbnail. I got a feeling people will be watching this looking for surf fishing tips for a long time
The surf perch are mostly in 2 feet of water, sometimes in a foot of water. Dan Hernandez did an episode on surf perch way back in the 1990's. He was right. People don't know...they cast like 100ft out, but all you really need is a 6.5ft. rod, medium power and a medium reel, frozen shrimp or just sand fleas. The surf perch stay in little troughs, in 2 feet of water, waiting for the waves to expose the sand fleas and then they just nab them. If you can find a trough (hole in the sand) in 2 or 3 feet of water in front of you, that's where the perch are. Right under your feet sometimes. But be careful not to step on any stingrays.
Nice video of the fish you caught... I was specting you to show some of your viewers the way you catch the bait it would help a lot as some may not know yet..... Thanks
Great video man. I’m up in Oregon and i just started surf perch fishing for red tail. Any suggestions on how to improve my chances on catching them? Thanks.
I think it's worth noting that Olaf is currently undefeated when it comes to being present at the beach and you catching fish. I think he at least deserves his own sticker lol.
Those days where each cast is a hit are the best man, especially after months of so-so results. You know it's gonna be a good day for BSP when you pull up and automatically see the sand crabs running.
What's the difference between a fish finder rig and a carolina rig, other than the size weight used? The concept seems the same in which the sinker slides freely, and a single hook is used with a varying length of leader. If you were to put a 3 ounce egg sinker on a c-rig, it's accomplishing the same technique. Please explain if I'm missing something.
a pyramid sinker on a fish finder rig will not roll around as much as an egg sinker on a carolina rig. if there isn't much current it won't make much of a difference.
That's a nice day, man. Today at Bolsa Chica I got 4 corbina (10-12 inch range), a yellowfin croaker (same), a small perch (like 5 inch?), and a little ray (the round one, not the bat-shaped one), all on lug worms. Four species in a morning is a nice day for me. I'd rather have those tasty perch, though.
Thank you great videos I am from the foothills and have to stay in the Bay Area a couple of times a month, I am going crazy not beefing able to fish. I’m going to give this a try in Pacifica thinks for the tips
A super enjoyable video with great sunset lighting. Those "surf" water conditions were calmer than my last pool lap swim. The setting looked like an exotic south pacific island with a barefoot local in shorts catching dinner. That spot looks like where "THE" surf caster fishes. I'm usually battling frequent (5) as you can see, short set waves. Great vid!! And yes, with lots of catching (and how to do it). Lots of catching is usually or not normal?? Or is it? Very obedient dog!!
Why or when a fish finder over a c-rig? They’re basically the same mechanics but the c-rig will roll with the egg sinker vs the pyramid weight staying mainly stationary.
What beach is that? What town / state? I used to get a lot of sand crabs in the summers in SoCal and use them fishing for Corbina; sand crabs more scarce in the winter. I’m planning a drive down the Pacific coast Seattle to San Diego in December and don’t know whether to expect to find sand crabs in WA, OR or even northern CÀ, especially in winter, and, if not, what other bait to use.
Thank you, I'm in Maryland about to head out to the Chesapeake. This area has a bridge and beach. So I'm going to take my nephews out and try a couple of your set ups. Thanks again.
Carolina rig. 8 lb braid W/12 lb monofilament. 9’ Shakespeare Ugly. 4’ leader. 1.5 oz slipshot weight. #4 hook. Berkeley Gulp sand worms. Red, Camo, Neutral. The latter I like best for surf perch & leopard sharks around Point Mugu, Pacific Coast Highway, Ca
If you have time I had a question or two. I noticed you put your fish right into a bag after catching them. I have seen other anglers do this. I was told by my fishing elder to bleed a fish as you catch it, and to bonk it to put it out of its misery. Can you elaborate at all on this part of your process?
Its always interesting seeing people get surf perch because as a spearo you see TONS of these (literally hundreds) but don't even think about shooting them because they don't have much meat! This is a cool tactic though! Awesome video!
With the keepers do you just toss them in the bag(no water) straight or do you cut the gills and brain stab them before the bag? Do you scale then gut and behead before frying whole?

Bro, where is the water that calm in California if you are there. I've fresh water fished my whole life and just started ocean fishing. I mostly been pier fishing more than surf fishing, the only time I've gone surf fishing me and my buddy only caught a shark, the only other species we have caught from the pier are rays, lobsters and mackerels. Have any spot suggestions? i feel for the most part we have the baits and lures down but not the destination. Been watching all your perch catching videos and now i wanna get ahold of some as well. Put the perch in the cooler with ice and water with a touch of salt.
It helps to keep the meat firmer until you filet and eat or freeze.

People use rakes, shovels & fishing nets but I just dig deep with my hand & I'll find a few at a time.
Use the sandcrabs for barred perch, and corbina here in so. Cal. Dime sized softshells with orange roe work best!
what pound line do you use?
Sand crab is his "secret bait" mentions at the very end
Great video man. I’m up in Oregon and i just started surf perch fishing for red tail. Any suggestions on how to improve my chances on catching them? Thanks.
Forget the pole holders, fish for them with the rod in your hands, the same technique you'd fish for largemouth bass...
I think it's worth noting that Olaf is currently undefeated when it comes to being present at the beach and you catching fish. I think he at least deserves his own sticker lol.
Yeah I agree, best surf fisher dog I know
Surf wise there are still some stripers south of Manresa, fish in the 24-25inch range. all on bait.

Where are you fishing and what is your bait.
Good times! I’m so bummed you didn’t show the set up more clearly. I kept replaying the cameo rig appearance but I’m not clear on the set up
It’s called a fish finder rig , attach a bead a sinker slider and swivel to main line and 2 foot leader to a small hook
Hi. Do i need to use soft shell sans crab or the hard ones? Please advise
Reminds me of fishing Torrey Pines beach and Pacific beach in 60s and early 70s when I surf fished. Sweet
