- Hi Everyone, in this video I make a copy of the iconic wedding dress worn by Dame Julie Andrews in the movie musical The Sound of Music. This dress was designed by Dorothy Jeakins. I talk about the problems finding the fabric for this dress and all the small details that go into it.
JAMES!!!!! I am speechless!!! Your artistic skills are beyond my humble words. EXQUISITE!!!
thasnk you so much i really enjoyed doing this one
Thank you for your kind words
@@jameskellylondon2428 James, would it be possible to contact you about a commission. I wouldn’t want anyone but you to make it!!! Thanks!!!

How very lovely! I love the movie and the dress is perfect despite the 60s design elements. Thank You, James!
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it
Another excellent video. Thank you!
It was such a pleasure to see you create this wedding dress. I love the Sound of Music :)
Thanks so much I'm glad you enjoyed it
So beautiful 🤩
Thank you
Beautiful
thank you
It is simple, modest, and elegant as one would expect a bridal gown likely made by the convent sisters out of love for their one-time postulate.
It’s soooooo good
Thank you
who wears these lovely creations you make? that is one lucky woman to be sure!
They sometimes get used in photoshoots
Dame Julie did say that the Dorothy Jenkins wedding dress was the most comfortable dress she has ever worn. Kudos to the designer & your own talents & skills, James.
Thank you so much I hope she sees it.
Stunning as always!
I have always loved this dress!
Thank you James! Beautiful!

Exquisite is indeed the word. My day has been brightened, thank you!
Thanks for your kind words
Would it be possible to see this beautiful dress on a model? To see how it moves? You are very talented. If you ever have a model wear it - please put it on UA-cam! Thank you for posting this video - This is one of my favorite wedding dresses and I love how Julie walked in it - so elegant.
Stunning! Try and get a model to wear it (and make the laurel crown too!)
Incredible! You are so talented
Thank you so much
It turned out beautifully!
Thank you 🙂
Oh My Goodness.
ITS SO BEAUTIFUL
I LOVE IT
I LOVE THE MOVIE AND JULIE
I AM OVER FAN GIRLING
AND FREAKING OUT
Thanks im glad you enjoyed it.
@@jameskellylondon2428 You are absolutely welcome.
Beautiful and genius on the button loops- I always wondered how they had the patience to sew all those tiny bits
I'm glad you found it interesting
Another wonderful video and fabulous recreation!!!
Thanks so much
When you say “slubbed silk”, do you mean duppioni? When I do 1860s dresses, we don’t use slubbed silk as it was considered inferior during the period. We normally use a nice 100% silk taffeta. I would’ve thought that this dress was made from a really lustrous and heavy Dutchess silk satin. Piping was routinely used at the neckline, waist and armsyce on all 1860s Victorian dresses. My technique for making piping is very similar to yours except that I use an open presser foot so I can get the needle right next to the piping cord. I was surprised to learn that this dress had gauging at the back. You call it cartridge pleating but that was not a term used in the 1860s. I love the look of a gauged dress. I have some beautiful gauging on some of my gowns and it makes the fabric drape so beautifully.
That is outstanding work. It has always been my favourite wedding dress and to watch you re-create it was quite special. Congratulations on such amazing work.
thank you so much, im glad that you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much!
omg, this is beautiful, i love that dress
Thank you so much
absolutely amazing!! wish I had the get-up and go of dressmaking, I'm a heavy procrastinator in pretty much anything so I have a lot of unfinished dress projects, wish I could just get to the finish line without any procrastination included absolutely stunning
I used to be like that and not finish things for years, but having the UA-cam channel had really helped me getting through things as I know people want to see them.
This is one of my favorite dresses from The Sound of Music and I never knew that the back had cartridge pleats and all that stuff in the back. My original idea of the back was something like the Gone With The Wind dresses that are cut as one piece from shoulder to floor with a lot of width for the volume of the skirt and train. I don't know why but I wanna wear that dress on my wedding day because this dress is an absolute dream. What zipper did you use on the sleeves? I was quite surprised to find that there was a zipper in the sleeves since I thought it just buttoned at the wrist.
I just used a standard nylon zipper. The dress sold at auction about 10 years ago and I was lucky enough to get photos of it so I knew what the back looked like
James you did an amazing job recreating this! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing skills with us all! Can I ask what you do with your pieces once you have made them?
James, PLEASE will you have a go at either Grace Kelly's wedding gown or Diana Spencer's? You are so talented. It would be incredible to see. I have a vintage Butterick pattern for Diana's gown but I've never got round to using it. Perhaps when I retire?! In any case - please consider it. Loving your work XXX
i think if i ever did one of those it would have to be Grace Kelly’s as it has a very interesting construction.
Since this dress from the Sound of Music was inspired from Princess Grace Kelly's wedding dress can I ask you to please now do the Princess Grace Kelly wedding dress. Spectacular job by the way on Julie's dress. What I never understood though, why was Julie's tiara made out of laurel leaves. What was the significance of that. Happy holidays to you and all of your subscribers!
That totally spoiled the look for me , the laurel leaves .
@@annethomson4920 I agree for it looks like it was borrowed from the props bin of the Ben-Hur movie. Julie was wearing what became the most iconic wedding dress from Hollywood and not a toga.
Hi James! This looks wonderful! I was wondering if you have any undergarments to support the skirt or a corset to sinch her waist? In the film, it looks like she's wearing one but I can't figure out if it was built in or separate. xx
I did make a slip to go under it but it was just cotton. I also sewed a strip of stiff net around the hem to help hold it out
beautiful as always... what does one call that type of collar?
@James Kelly London - Very pretty!!
Well done !!
Just curious - of all the recent royals weddings - whose wedding dress would be your favourite and which is the most difficult to recreate ??
I think Catherine’s ( Kate’s) due to the lace embroidery . .
Gabriella Windsor’s also had a lot of lace .
Kate's exaggerated v-neck was a bit too low. Not in terms of revealing- it wasn't.
But the proportions were off.
Did you like the redone Queen's dress, with square neckline? Worn by one of Fergie & Andrew's girls?
It was a deep ecru. Perfect for that bride & full of meaning as royal vintage-
This is amazingly beautiful, what do you do with the dress after you’ve completed it?
Thank you so much. They are all kept in boxes.
Beautifully made. Did you make the buttons yourself?
No I had these done professionally as so many were needed
Still waiting for part 2 of the Marilyn Monroe dress :P
That is hopefully be out on a week or so.
@@jameskellylondon2428 sure
The original looks to be silk dupion/dupioni and your version looks to be silk Duchess satin or what my mother would have called "slipper satin", similar to the satin used on dyeable shoes. Is it??
The original was in a slubbed dupion mine is in a light weight taffeta
Name of the footers used
Pls is there a video of the pattern drafting of this dress
No I'm afraid not. I draft all my patterns before hand.
I’m getting married. Can I wear that please.???? Crash diet plus age rewind coming my way !! Way to go James. I’m in awe again. Crash diet advice anyone.??
Thanks so much
Is there a way to get the pattern for this dress, ive been looking for one but can’t seem to find one.
I've never seen one, I created the pattern myself.
@@jameskellylondon2428could a person get a copy of the pattern from you?
@@cabranoia if you subscribe to my Patreon I can copy the pattern and send it to you
Do you think the original dress was under-lined?
The original dress was backed with silk organza
