Those details make that nightgown stunning. It’s truly lovely. Thank you for sharing the process with us. My sister knits and when she is done with a big project she loves to do one or two smaller ones that she calls pallet cleansers. Its a good way to keep doing what you love while still getting some rest in.

Love all those pin tucks and scallop details. Wow! I would definitely love to see the dressing gown/robe that went with this nightdress. That would be fun to see. I agree with you James, I always thought that for the length of time Olivia wore this costume on screen, that there was likely more than one made.

thank you for making this nightdress, james! as always, your work is gorgeous! simple compared to scarlett's but oh-so-detailed compared to what one can find in the shops today. the contrast between each character and her costumes can't be clearer. i always thought it was funny that olivia de havilland was supposed to be the "plain" one compared to ms. leigh in the film because i saw olivia first as maid marian in robin hood opposite errol flynn and thought she was stunning. please do make the dressing gown!

22 skirt panels?! Thats quite a lot. Im working on a pinafore inspired by this dress for my everyday wear and I just used a rectangle of gingham and pleated it up. I didnt realize that the skirt was cut in gored panels as I thought it was like darted at the top then pleated to give that floaty look it has.

such a "simple" dress...and yet it's not! it does have a sense of simplicity about it that suits maria's character, but it's so elegant. the darting in the front bodice is stunning, as are the cartridge pleats. the sleeve and button details are things i don't know how many of us miss when watching the movie. just gorgeous work, james, especially on such an unforgiving but lovely fabric. speaking of which, from what i've seen, "raw" silk (slubbier than dupioni) used to be the cheaper option than the smoother silks. funny that it's so much more expensive and hard to come by these days.

risque for the 50s? yes indeed! but stunning. (i'm no prude, but even i gasped and said "oh my!" when the ladies in waiting first turned their backs on us in the audience! - and thanks for linking the clips!) it's amazing how much detail goes into hollywood costumes--details that the eye seldom catches on first watching a film but that really sell the costume as being everything it's supposed to be. expensive and fine silk underlayers, for example...who'd think you need that kind of expense? - but that's what helped those lovely skirts move so beautifully. and chantilly lace sells the costumes as french court-appropriate. the craft really is amazing!
