    risque for the 50s? yes indeed! but stunning. (i'm no prude, but even i gasped and said "oh my!" when the ladies in waiting first turned their backs on us in the audience! - and thanks for linking the clips!) it's amazing how much detail goes into hollywood costumes--details that the eye seldom catches on first watching a film but that really sell the costume as being everything it's supposed to be. expensive and fine silk underlayers, for example...who'd think you need that kind of expense? - but that's what helped those lovely skirts move so beautifully. and chantilly lace sells the costumes as french court-appropriate. the craft really is amazing!

    That was awesome I have to tell you that when I was coming up in the business I got to work in summer stock in Sacramento California and during the repertoire of the summer stock it’s a Gaynor would come into her one woman show she was awesome and such a delight my first summer I was in the chorus and worked in the costume shop then I got the opportunity to come back and only be the shop manager..!! And that’s where I got my taste of leaving performing and doing costumes that took me to San Francisco to the American conservatory theater from there to the Shakespeare festival in New York a few years in fashion then back to costumes for Parsons nearest where I work for 28 years and now the New York City ballet..!!
    Can’t wait to see how you repair the government..!!

    The soothing sound of your voice and the crunching sounds of the tissue paper make for a perfect ASMR video!

    Absolutely wonderful! I am also so intrigued by the inner construction of garments, especially those that have such detail. Seeing the handwork just thrills me. Thank you so much for making this available....such a treat for my eyes 👀

    I really love to watch you sew. I have been sewing for 50 years and you actually taught me something!! I measure everything before I cut and usually end up cutting again from an adjustment. I never thought of doing a skirt like you did. Finish the bottom and adjust from the top!! I love it. It would save me a lot of thinking and measuring !! I make patterns so I think like that!! I love you, smart man!!

      thank you so much for your very kind comments.
      Leveling from the top only really works with skirts that are cut from straight panels of fabric. If I was working with a skirt made from shaped panels I would level it from the bottom. I hope you will continue to watch my channel for more videos.

      "We're Ladies in Waiting" song keeps swirling round my head. Interesting how fabric ages.

    Unique dress the way is made is so beautiful. Thanks for the video. I was delighted to see it. I wish I could have one like that from the 1800s. I love it!!

    The deterioration of this dress shows why we gave so few examples of historical fashion. Such a shame textiles are so fragile.

    Curious as to why you are not wearing cotton gloves while handling this antique garment. Is that not standard anymore?

    • @jameskellylondon2428
      @jameskellylondon2428  3 роки тому +3

      this is still a big debate, some do, others work with cleaning there hands regularly while working with item. Also wearing gloves lessens you fillings when examining the garment.

    "Les Girls" is a favorite of mine (love Gene Kelly and Kay Kendall), and it's fascinating to see this costume up close. Such great detail! I look forward to seeing your restoration.
