  • This is part one of the most comprehensive review I've ever done. For twelve different low carb or "keto" tortillas, I'll be giving you the rundown on taste, texture, ingredients, carbs (total and net) and my blood glucose response. I'll also let you know which ones caused me inflammation issues.

WOW! What a fantastic part 1....and all about tortillas...I love it. I have been buying Ole Xtreme tortillas here in Arizona. I watch the net carb count but do not do blood glucose testing. So many tortillas here are not Keto friendly & those that are....are very expensive (like many many Keto breads sold). I do appreciate tasting these with no butter, cheese, meat, etc. Understanding a tortilla is only a carrier for your fillings, true taste can be masked. And also here in AZ, Ole Xtreme tortillas have been "on sale" a lot at Kroger (Fry's) Grocery stores. And nowadays, that makes a difference to me. Thank you for all of your fantastic reviews. Keep them coming :)

Hey there fellow Arizonian🙋‍May I presume you are happy w/the "Ole Xtreme Wellness" tortillas? Quite honestly, I've hesitated to buy them thinking Fry's was perhaps trying to unload them, as they sometimes do=) Along w/the fact that there always seems to be a big stack of them at our local Fry's (107th & Peoria) which makes me think nobody likes them~ now I'm reconsidering, of course. If you don't mind my nosiness, can` I also ask how you've used them, meaning plain as tacos, and/or fried or baked as enchiladas, etc? Thank you in advance for any further info you care to share~ Samantha in Sun City

@@RV-there-Yet Hi Samantha! I reallllllly like them. They taste like the real thing to me. Like I said, I bought them (the small 5" & 8" ones) when they were on sale "buy 5, get $1 off each item" (here in Globe AZ). I heat them in the microwave, add cheese, my meat, lettuce, seasonings. I am a really simple person when eating low carb. I haven't fried or baked them, but they seem sturdy enough that I would consider using them. I'm LC, hubby isn't so my eating doesn't always appeal to him. That doesn't bother either of us at all. And funny that you mention about Fry's.....when I went to Fry's yesterday.....there were no Ole Xtreme tortillas!!!!! mmmmmmm

@@carolrenteria2045 Oh wow~ I LOVE Globe! We nearly moved there when the house sold in Prescott Valley, but as it turned out, we were needed here w/my mother-in-law in Sun City. My husband grew up in the Phoenix area, but I'm from a little town in WA State, which Globe reminds me so much of.=)
Anyhow, isn't that strange about them being out of stock @Fry's?! I'm out to the stores for meat sales this afternoon, so I'll have to look~ maybe Steve has a whole lot of AZ viewers, & there was a mad rush on them after this review 😂👍

Also super glad to see the Lavash bread results. I know it's not super tasty by itself but I have a few recipes that it works great for. My current favorite is BBQ Chicken Pizza. I can't thank you enough for doing this review. It's not just that you're willing to risk being kicked out of ketosis, which is enough on its own. It's the willingness to risk the inflammation and pain that can come with some of the testing. I'm tentatively pleased at the results you had with the brand I've been using, La Banderita. But I'll await your final thoughts in Part 2. Thanks again.

Thank you, for doing the hard work for us. I am currently using the "Untortilla" as it is the only gluten free out there. A la madre caused a big blood glucose spike for me. I did multiple tests and even tested against a regular corn tortilla and it caused a spike equal, and sometimes even greater than a normal corn tortilla. I reached out to a la madre and they said that their tortillas aren’t meant to necessarily be diabetic friendly or that they test for blood glucose levels. I was super bummed because they tasted great.

Agree on the Nutri-Ricas, they are my go-to, very tasty and great texture, but I limit them because of the not-wholesome ingredient list, but very worthwhile as a treat. I imagine with a fat-blunted carb response these will be even lower impact, since I'm loading them with fajita meat, guac and sour cream. Also they make great mini-thin pizza crusts. I have Persian friends for whom lavash bread is a part of their daily diet. It is a vehicle/mechanism to scoop food and get it into their mouths. The nutritional info is better than that of rice ( the other common vehicle to get food into their mouth) so I appreciate you including it in your testing! Not "Keto", per se, but not a totally bad way to scoop or wrap foods on your plate.

Lavash is kind of similar to Indian naan. Just healthier ingredients

Great video, Steve! I've been toasting La Banderita tortillas, using olive oil & salt, to make crackers.

Lavish product works WELL as a noodle replacement for like lasagna or any kind of dish where it is cooked in a sauce like enchiladas.... :0) We love using it that way! Great episode 1!!!!!!

@@anitav9612 all I did was cut the lavish bread in wide strips and just used it in place of the lasagna noodles. Didn't cook it just from the sauce it softens it so it's almost noodle texture.

Thanks Steve for these videos! La Banderita has been one of my favorites but I've been avoiding it lately due to all the wheat. After all your work here I think I'm going to do some blood glucose testing on myself to try to see how my body responds.
I was disappointed at the good results of the L'Oven brand from Aldi since I too don't care for the texture and flavor. I think they actually changed their recipe a while back since I'm pretty sure their previous version had modified wheat starch and such in it.
Edit: just started watching part 2 and I didn't realize Aldi had more than 1 low carb tortilla. I think my local store just has one type.

Steve, I've been eagerly awaiting this video since you first mentioned it. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to do this video. I'm from Arizona, and we love our tortillas here. The first brand I tried, was Mission Carb Balance, they were decent but expensive here. The same thing went for Guerrero's Nutri-Ricas Carb Watch. I like Ole Mexican Foods Xtreme Wellness High Fiber, Spinach Herbs and Tomato Basil. They're good alternatives at a very reasonable price. Then I tried Ole's La Banderita Carb Counter brand I liked it better and when I found Ole's La Banderita Carb Counter Street Taco I've been hooked on that ever since. They have 0 Net Carbs or 5 Total Carbs a piece, I like to use them as slim buns for burgers, slim bread for sandwiches, and mini tacos. They're also pretty reasonably priced compared to similar items and for Cinco de Mayo, I picked up 5 at Fry's for $0.97 a piece, which in my opinion is a steal. Thanks again Steve, I'll be looking forward to Part 2.

I like the extreme wellness ones (spinach/herb and tomato/basil). Just found out today that it says refrigerate after opening. Must be because of flax seed?

In my opinion, it might be because you're potentially introducing bacteria into the package when you pull one out. So you stick it in the fridge, it slows down the growth and helps the tortillas last longer. My dad owned a Mission route for over 20 years, so it was always a staple in my world to put tortillas directly into the fridge after you get them.
Something I've picked up along the way is if you take them out of the packaging and put them on a plate in the fridge till they cool down, you'll prevent any water from forming inside the package.

Thank you, Steve. I use the La Banderita brand and I find them to be fine. I have never done taste-testing the way you are but I may try whatever you say you end up liking the best and see if I like it more than La Banderita. One benefit of this brand is they aren't so close to tortillas that you feel compelled to eat soft tacos every day. But it's great to have on hand for when you like to eat something with your hands. (I buy them at Walmart, if anyone is wondering.)

I'm looking forward to the next part and hopefully a ranking. I love tortilla chips and pretty much avoid them since going keto. It would be great to have an option that works with my goals.

I get about a 20 pt peak rise out of two La Banderita wraps....and they fry up nicely in a pan with butter/bacon fat when I make crunch wraps. I've had Extreme Wellness and they also so it's nice to see them score well. I know in the past I meter-checked the Mission wraps and was under the impression they bumped me up quite a bit (50 pts or so) so it'll be interesting to see what you get on those when you test them. I may have to check them one more time to make sure myself because I really think they taste the best out of all the one's I've tried.
