You know how a lot of scenes in MGS2 have Raiden talking to someone right in front of them but they need to switch to codec? I wonder if those were originally gonna be fully animated cutscenes but they couldn't be finished because they had to reallocate that time into changing the ending.
I always wondered why characters opted to do that so many times. The codec in general I think gets used as a way to freeze time during info-dumps. It also doesn't make much sense that all the people you run into just happen to have a codec. Why would Stillman in MGS2 have one, for example?
It's probably a budget thing. Imagine every conversation having a cutscene, how much time would have to be spent on music, sound-design, animation, camera work, etc.

Love you guys for going all out and bringing David himself to narrate these vids. Metal Gear has always been one of my favorite franchises and MGS3 might just be my all time favorite game, and it is heartwarming to see such a popular channel keeping the legacy alive.
This also happened to The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes was the release that was most what Kojima intended, playing with dark themes and torture, which was mostly cut from TPP. It's honestly a shame, reality is dark, and horrible. Games that are designed to reflect reality and tell stories should be as close to that as possible in my opinion.
But TPP is dark. I mean there are child soldiers, losing limbs then hunting your enemy till you lose yourself in the process and your humanity, washed up dead bodies in a polluted factory because of experiments with a parasite, a rape scene, the whole part with Huey which is just deplorable, Venom snake forced to kill his own soldiers, the wounds of colonialism and its aftermath ; not to mention the countless tapes one of which is a sort of rendition of The Rwandan Genocide. This game is dark, perhaps it's more subtle in its bleakness but I think follows perfectly the line introduced in Ground Zeroes
@@oniricuncle "But TPP is dark. I mean there are child soldiers..." The problem is it doesn't fit. The game is too silly for those heavy themes. The bad guy's name is Skull Face. This is seriously Adam West Batman levels of camp. And oh my god, I just realized Quiet (aside from being a woman who looks hot and can't talk) is like a combination Poison Ivy and Catwoman. And those ridiculous prosthetic fist weapons...They could literally cast Adam West's Batman as the hero and this wouldn't get less silly.
I love these longer format videos, especially with how much content is in the Metal Gear franchise. So cool having David Hayter, the man himself doing the narration with ad-libbed bits of his own personal experiences. Keep up the good work and can't wait for more Metal Gear info!!
Of course all the research and writing is incredible, but it's hard to not have David Hayter steal the show here. Thanks so much for the video, 40 min went by in a flash.

Wow! I’ve followed MGS for several years and did my own deep dives to find out as much behind the scenes info as I could. You guys just presented a bunch of info I never even heard before! Well done!
Man these are some good ones. That original pitch for MGS4 seemed to become Death Stranding. And even that it's small scale compared to the original pitch. Damn I wish we got to see the A,B,C wars in MGS4 and also being rehashed and improved in MGSV. It's heartbreaking. That made the MGS4 feel so alive.
I love these! Getting David Hayter's insight is such a fun touch, and he always does a great job on these voiceovers. Can't wait for the revengence one!
Wow, while it looked like a lot of effort went into making sure Kojima didn't get too derailed with some of his more fantastical ideas, he still had the right idea about which direction to take games in in general. Him and his team were some incredibly talented and dedicated people (from the lengths they went to to learn more about what they were making, etc.).
"he still had the right idea about which direction to take games in in general." No he didn't. All those ideas are terrible. A realistic, simulated jungle, instead of just good level design? It adds nothing to the game because players are there for the spy fantasy, not horticulture, but it makes the hardware requirements go way up. A game that makes your room smell like blood by melting paint inside your console? Jesus Christ dude, no, I don't want my video game stinking up my house, and I don't want melted paint in my console. His ideas are expensive and bad, and the fact that they couldn't be done saved his career over and over. Fortunately, the parts of his ideas that were good, like making a Hollywood action movie into a game, were also achievable and fun.
Even better than the previous two installments! I loved that Mr. Hayter provided voice lines for the MGRR Sword and how he broke character at the end! Can't wait for another one of these.
Thank you for sharing. This is really informative specially I'm surprised that you're able to ask David Hayter to do the commentary in this video it gives an intimate MGS feel. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work.
Kojima really is a brilliant mind. He knows how to tell a story and somehow have it all make sense by the end of it. I'm glad he's still making games today, and can't wait to check out his next project.

Judging by Death Stranding though he still has some tricks up his sleeve and the future is looking bright!
This was a pretty awesome video, thanks for making it DYKG and David for voicing it! I’m definitely looking forward to the video on the original MGS Rising that was scrapped. I also hope you make another video on Peace Walker, and MGS5. As we all should know by now, a lot of the original idea from MGS5 were scrapped and changed from what was originally promised and teased and we still haven’t been explained why from Kojima. The PP diverged a lot from Ground Zeros and unfortunately was not as good as it was.

MGS2 is still my favorite of the series, and it's been absolutely wild watching the events of the plot all but play out IRL. Censorship, information control, government fearing loss of control, the internet becoming a walled garden...
Social networks becoming methods of social control via dissemination of misinformation and incomplete, malformed opinions (AI-Rose: "No one is right - but neither is anyone invalidated.") and on and on. Nice to see it, revengeance I like it and mgs4 made me start loving Raiden as a character
With how Revengeance got popular recently and all the memes, lets hope that could convince Konami to let Platinum do another one, hell maybe they could even bring Kojima to consult with them again.
Read so much about the initial concept that raiden saving sunny is still my headcannon
@@manfreddawg I believe that particular aspect of the plot is still intended to be canon, at least as far as Kojima's intentions go.
"This narrator is doing a really good impression. Wait.... ft....David...HAYTER!!"
I have watched this three times now because it’s impossible to absorb all of the info on just one watch. Fantastic job guys, you really set the bar very high when it comes to video game content. Thank you!!
Thanks Jay, very generous of you. If more folks triple-watched our videos and dropped a tip, we could make twice as many. Cheers mate :)
@@DJIVision I’m very grateful to have informative entertainment like this today :-) It is amazing that we live in a world where we can consume media that fits our interests perfectly at any moment we want. Thank you for the kind words Dr. Lava, and also for the amazing work on the new video. It was amazing!
@@jayst Thanks Jay :)
10 wow a month
38:49 I love how you provided some Snake voices for Snake's sword for MGRR Mr Hayter lol
Really appreciate you guys actually getting David Hayter to narrate these, the man is iconic! They did my boi dirty in MGSV !
Love you guys for going all out and bringing David himself to narrate these vids. Metal Gear has always been one of my favorite franchises and MGS3 might just be my all time favorite game, and it is heartwarming to see such a popular channel keeping the legacy alive.
MGS3 was definitely the best to me too, the atmosphere, the gameplay, no futuristic stuff, just raw action. Cheers buddy.
@@arthurvg2217 Word! The story is legendary, and that ending despite countless playthroughs still makes me emotional. Props my man 👍
I'm here to rewatch after the restriction lifting. Love you guys! Keep up the great work!
I mean there are child soldiers..."
The problem is it doesn't fit. The game is too silly for those heavy themes. The bad guy's name is Skull Face. This is seriously Adam West Batman levels of camp. And oh my god, I just realized Quiet (aside from being a woman who looks hot and can't talk) is like a combination Poison Ivy and Catwoman. And those ridiculous prosthetic fist weapons...They could literally cast Adam West's Batman as the hero and this wouldn't get less silly.
so cool you got David to do another one of these. Sounds like he had a blast recording these.
David! You’re legend. One of the most iconic voices in all of gaming.
Amazing content as usual, and as always great to hear more commentaries from David Hayter.
Dude I miss David Hayter this is awesome. He was my childhood
Thanks! Love your work
I love this kind of content, especially for MGS, what a cherry on top to get legendary David Hayter to narrate
I can't tell you how incredible it is to hear my childhood hero tell me about all the things I never knew about one of my favorite series. Amazing content, thank you!
Thanks for putting together another excellent video, and thank you David for being such a cool guy and humoring us fans!
As a big MGS and David Hayter fan, this was an absolute treat! Thanks for all the hard work researching, and extra thanks to David for narrating it!
Solid Snake himself (David Hayter) narrating this video is damn AWESOME!!
It'd be cool if they got Cam Clarke (Liquid) to do one.
Mind blown right? 🤯🤯😱😱
David Hayter will always be THE BEST! He is THE Voice of Snake, no replacements, no exceptions! Thank you so much David, you're amazing!
Agreed
for solid yes, i kinda like sunderland more for big boss
@@jmgonzales7701 Agreed, especially an older Big Boss
@@nutball3756 he is the one that fits
Ppl are still malding about Reefer Sutherland, huh?
Wow! I’ve followed MGS for several years and did my own deep dives to find out as much behind the scenes info as I could. You guys just presented a bunch of info I never even heard before! Well done!
Thank you dkg and David for this awesome collaboration!
I wasn't expecting to cry watching a DYKG video, but here I am... once againcrying over that MGS3 scene in the flower field.
That scene got me fucked up the first time I experienced it 😭
@@FLCLpsycho The voice lines... if they wouldn't have been cut, i think i would have had a trauma back then, this is hard stuff right there!
An ending like that is how you make a game timeless.
"he still had the right idea about which direction to take games in in general."
No he didn't.
@@TheMisterGuy "Made sure he didn't get too derailed by his more fantastical ideas"
Can you fucking read?
I LOVE this so much! David is amazing! I hope him and Kojima are on good terms these days. David is an absolute legend in my books
I love these Metal Gear videos. The last one about the nuclear disarmament in MGSV was incredible, as was this one.
Needed this just at this moment! Thank you.
Looking cool Joker
Even better than the previous two installments! I loved that Mr. Hayter provided voice lines for the MGRR Sword and how he broke character at the end! Can't wait for another one of these.
Thank you for sharing. This is really informative specially I'm surprised that you're able to ask David Hayter to do the commentary in this video it gives an intimate MGS feel. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work.
Kojima really is a brilliant mind. He knows how to tell a story and somehow have it all make sense by the end of it. I'm glad he's still making games today, and can't wait to check out his next project.
I absolutely love having David Hayter narrate these videos! I still get chills hearing him say "Did you know?" in Snake's voice. I especially love how he went off script and gave some of his own opinions on this.
I'd love to hear an interview with him, and listen to him talk about his opinion on the plot and what not. I think it would be interesting to hear it from his perspective.
Fantastic video as always! I really like Hayter's interjections about development. It's awesome hearing his direct insider take. And of course the star of the show is the amazing research you guys have put in. Thank you so much for the work you do!
Thanks HN :)
This was a fun watch, hearing David Hayter himself narrating this and adding his own interjections was the icing on the cake.
The MGS fan community is doing a better job celebrating the series' 35th anniversary better than Konami themselves, lol.
It’s just so crazy to listen to David “Snake” talk about MGS. It’s like a super secret cutscene where you find out Snake was just acting the whole time.
Thank you, David.
david hayter seems like a genuine fan of this series and not just an actor.
Man, this only reminded me of how I miss David Hayter in my life 😢
Kept us waiting, huh?
Have you played Bloodstained Ritual of the Night? He voices Zangetsu in that game
We can thank David Hayter for Netflix's Warrior Nun. It's a show he worked on that he's very proud of. (Source = Twitter)

This is like a documentary.
Incredible work.
This is a golden UA-cam video best of 2022 no exaggeration
David very clearly had a lot of fun with this.
What an awesome video. Congrats on it. I never knew of all the ambitious ideas Kojima had for each entry in the series. And what a shame we probably won't see another MGS from him now that hardware is starting to get closer to what he dreamt all the way back in the 80s. Judging by Death Stranding though he still has some tricks up his sleeve and the future is looking bright!
We have David reading the lines for Revengeance's Snake Sword, now let's wait someone to mod it in
This was a pretty awesome video, thanks for making it DYKG and David for voicing it!
It's great to hear David Hayter in action again! Thanks for the video!
Stellar. Simply stellar. This video is a must watch for any MGS fan.
Cheers!
What’s harder to believe?
All these unknown facts coming to light? Or the Fact that the Legendary Solid Snake is narrating which makes some of us wonder if there is a hidden truth behind this video.
p.s. Thank you David for helping out in this video. I could imagine Snake doing narration. Maybe the next video is DYKG: The Real Ending of MGS V??
Well, they weren't exactly unknown, since they were told in all of those magazine and video interviews he showed. But all in one place, now, yes!
I could listen to David all day. Everything he says feels impactful, Solid Snake brainwashing.
Just found this account wtf?! Metal gear is Life. Love this!
Bro it took me a solid minute untill I realized that Snake's EN VA narrated this.
Then he went on and "dubbed" the sword. Im dead. This was epic!!
Absolutely enjoyed this video and had massive fun listening to it. Thanks for this quality content - with the best narrator you could've picked!
If we were really paying attention, MGS2 should have scared the shit out of everyone who played it. We were distracted by LOL WUT I NEED SCISSORS! 61!
Yeah that was wild back then!
The only word I can think of when I see this level of content: respect.
All these ideas that Kojima couldn’t do could definitely be done in this day and age. That would be beautiful to see a fully imagined MGS
I would imagine something like ARMA but with a wild story and spiritual spooky elements.
unliked and re-liked the videos after your community post to give you guys engagement, you deserve every view for the effort you put in to preserving this history.
Please keep getting David Hayter for these videos. He makes them even better.
“I… Kinda knew it would be at the time.” LMAO
Yo David hayter again. It’s insane that they’re able to get this guy. Hearing his random comments throughout is awesome
It’s not that insane, actually. Probably the hardest thing is to have them match schedules, but Hayter is a pretty chill, down-to-earth guy who shares the fans’ love for the franchise and is always up for collaborating on anything Metal Gear related… or even letting fans record him on their phones saying anything using Snake’s voice
35:06 they took something great from us
The naked soldier too
14:18 ohhhhh David just straight up flame throwing that shade daaaaaaaaaamn
Extremely informative video. I really appreciate the dedication you had to dig up never heard before information about the games’ content!
Can’t wait for the 3rd video about Metal Gear Rising! When the trailer I was fascinated about the possibility to see Raiden face to face with The Patriots. Unfortunately it never materialized.
