The Japanese are fairly notorious for their inferiority complex when it comes to ideas and the possibility of being shown up. 15:21 - I'm a little confused at this part. Here, it's said that the promotion ran from November 1998 to May 1989. Was this supposed to say May of 1998 to November of 1998?
“Mario & Wario” is really worth picking up if you’ve never tried it. Like the man says, it’s all in English, so there’s no language barrier. It’s also pretty cheap, and you’ve got a few options for getting it to run on a North American SNES. If you’d rather go the emulation route, ZSNES (and probably other emulators) has mouse support. I really wish Nintendo would just add the mouse games to NSO. The Switch dock already has USB ports, all it would take is a software update to get it to work with off-the-shelf mice.
A big problem with ZSNES is that it hasn't been updated in over a decade, though. That's why its recommendation has been lessened for others like Snes9x.
@@GabePuratekuta I haven’t been using ANY emulator for a long time, I just mentioned ZNES because I knew off the top of my head that it has mouse support. At any rate, it’s good enough to run “Mario Paint” and “Mario & Wario”.

3:25 This is interesting because I believe this is crochet and not knitting, which begs the question of did they just include crochet for the hell of it?
I have a very weird fascination with Super Mario Bros. Special. It does a lot of unique things with the tilesets and level design that you don't get in the NES/FDS games. It made me greatly appreciate the creativity at hand and made me look forward to all the efforts that went into bringing Special into various other formats that are more capable of running a platformer: the NES conversions, Super Mario Bros. Crossover, Mari0, and even Super Mario Maker. A thing about the scrolling: If you look at footage of the PC-88 version of Super Mario Bros. Special running on original hardware, it loads in the next screen, tile by tile, from the left to the right, before spawning you and the other entities. Most emulators don't replicate this and simply fade the entire screen to black.

How did they come up with that?!
45:20 Wait. So if Yoshi's cookie has never been brought over to the west in any way what / how were Arin and Dan playing on game grumps all those years back?
I assume they mean that particular version of Yoshi's Cookie, since the one in the collection is a remake.
Thr NES version is the only one that didn't get ported.
yea that confused me, because the way it was phrased there made it seem like it was an entirely new game, except Yoshi's Cookie was a game for the NES. It's a remake.
Wrecking Crew 98 was added to the Nintendo Switch online recently so it can be taken off the Japan exclusive list.
@12:46 I didn't realize Jubilee was such a big gamer!
6:40 they can't keep getting away with it
Actually America got the Shindo version of Super Mario 64 through Super Mario 3D All Stars
15:20 - That date range doesn't sound correct? 1998 - 1989? Assuming this is just a mis-reading of the script
Yeah, Somethings wrong here, So it says 1989 at the end, Which is less than 1998, so yeah, DidYouKnowGaming made a small oopsie.
It's always weird to see games that are fully (or nearly) in English when it's meant only for the Japanese region.
I think English is the closest thing we have to a universal language
@@alchemistofsteel8099 Even stranger since there are far more native Chinese speakers.
49:32 "a thing of the past" pff, tell that to Buddy Mission Bond on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo still hasn't localized that.
Definitely love the direction the channel is taking!!
3:25 This is interesting because I believe this is crochet and not knitting, which begs the question of did they just include crochet for the hell of it?
yeah that's crochet
Came here to point out the same thing
Knitting = 2 sticks
Crochet = 1 hook
Interesting, I wonder if the emulator authors don't know about that behavior?
Nintendo was actually generous to the fans when it ccomes to giving prizes. Too bad that they now give just store credit.
Wait, we live in a timeline with two Mario knitting games, AND and Mario excite bike game?? Nice.
15:18 "The promotion running from November of 1998 to May 1989" The promotion somehow went back in time! I thought I heard that wrong so I went back to listen to it again and I did hear right! Dude you slipped up, I think you meant it ran until 1999! 🤣 You're awesome!
28:15 what song is this bro it's stuck in my head
Someone has to know. I must find out what this song it

"Mom, Can I have Super Mario World?" - "We have Mario World at home."
Mario World at home: 0:05
As a game designer looking at that knitting game, just so much work into making a game nobody played astonishes me.
@21:51 I was sitting here the entire time being like why the heck does that background music sound like Pokémon. Then bam you explain it. Love these videos
As someone who only recently got into Picross, I’m sad that there was one that we didn’t get ☹️
I feel the same about the sewing machine, my kid self would have loved that, I remember getting a sewing machine and Gameboy for my birthday too 🙂🙂
Some pretty interesting stuff there, I think the Mario Excitebike is pretty cool but a lot of that stuff isn’t really that interesting to me, alternate levels to the games we did get would be pretty cool though
Some of these Mario games look like so much fun. I love the creation tools in some of the games! Your production values are fantastic as well. I've been watching the channel for a long time. Keep it up and great job to everyone at DYKG!
15:31 That's not an ad for the Super Mario Bros. 3 game. It's an ad for Super Mario Bros. 3 furikake (a kind of topping that is sprinkled on rice).
Came here to say this.
I kinda sometimes don't understand what DidYouKnowGaming says sometimes, You are not alone, He literally said Mario Paint is only for Japan while its also for the SNES, Mario Paint is literally a better version of paint.exe for Windows 3.o or Windows 1.0 (CGA ONLY) or Windows 1.01,
Very fascinating episode of DYKG of Super Mario games that we in the west never got too play. 🤔😮💨😙🙂
Funny thing one of the first games being a knitting game, being that programming itself began with knitting machines.
They're actually crochet "games" but you are right.
5:47 Eh, I'll take "Western Show on Super Mario World" over this any day.
LET'S DO THE MARIO, ALL TOGETHER NOW
Edited from my original comment:
The song featured at 28:07 is Sumire September Love by SHAZNA.
I would love for you to talk about some the other Japan only Nintendo games that we never got.
There are so many titles available just in Japan, like the Nintendo Power I found that concept very interesting. Another game that I also found interesting is mobile golf which you gotta use use the mobile adapter
gb
I had been waiting SO LONG for Itadaki Street to be mentioned in a video!
I really wish Nintendo would have ported that Excitebike Satellaview game to anything else.
I guess that one course in Mario Kart 8 is as close as we'll ever get.
I think everyone wants ports of _all_ the Satellaview games.
28:12 what song is this?

@@Steroids69 thank you!
I'm surprised at the fact you guys never did a video in any witcher game.
"With the promotion running from November of 1998 to May 1989." Me scratches head...
too bad us westerners never got to play "i am a teacher! super mario sweater"
No, I think we dodged a bullet bill there.
Y’all’s videos are a happy place for me. Just incredibly calming
GOD SAME
You should watch console restoration ASMR videos. Now those are calming.
I get why a Majhong Mario would be not released... But Mario Party with Square Enix characters sound something that would sell....
I had Mario paint in the 90s. Didn't have the mouse, but I loved using it to make songs when I was like 3-4. Would love to find my old copy and hear what I made back then
How'd you play it without the mouse?
@@Animebryan2 You have to use the ControlPad on the SNES or Super Famicom controller. Its not only playable with the mouse, but it works better with the mouse.
5:36 well I didn't want to sleep. That is a super special Mario.
That thing that hooks to the bottom of the snes and gets radio broadcasts and downloads is wild!
I remember a weird Japan only Mario 2 continuation that I found while browsing the Mario wiki
Do you mean BS Mario USA for the Super Famicom Satellaview Add-on? Its downloadable, which was kinda weird in the 90's (probably 80's) And Downloading was not since 16 year olds invented it.
@@EnlightenmentCSS3 I think
WHAT? Nintendo didn't copyright strike All Nippon Radio for putting lyrics to the Mario theme song!? 😱😱
Seeing as how much I love puzzle games I would have begged for that GameCube puzzle pack near the ned of the video. Also it's called Puzzle League not Tetris Attack anymore. Not even sure why they were allowed to use the Tetris name in the first place.
Mario Brothers special looks like a fun game, kinda upset we didn't get it. Great video!
That Mario excitebike game looks like a feverdream in hell. That being said, I’d love to play it
Holy cow, an add-on that let's you program games directly onto the famicon hardware?
Dude, if they had released that in the US for the NES, I would have used that without ever stopping! I would have learned how to program and debug before I was even ten years old; that would have COMPLETELY changed my life and career!
"Yaw-Shee" is a 100% valid pronounciation btw
Holy crap! i remember those Nagatanien Mario ochazuke/furikake packs from the mid-80's. They're actually pretty tasty. (i still buy that company's chazuke products today)
