  • Tripped and fell down the rabbit hole of buying more motorcycles. This is a 1992 Kawasaki KDX200 that hasn't been started in 10 years. Jen and I try to get it going.

      Yeah, but technically if the number you leave out is like just a zero off the end, it's still just a zero so technically that's nothing at all that's been omitted. Yes I have a terrible relationship.

    Some info on these old KDX's:
    The #1 thing to check: The power valves in the top of the cylinder get carboned up and they break. They were made out
    of aluminum. They will bounce around in the top end and destroy the motor.
    You can clean them up or replace them with custom made steel ones. They are pricey though.
    Check the rubber adapter between the motor and the carb. They develop cracks and can suck air/dirt.
    Check the air filter box rubber between the carb and the air filter box. They develop cracks and can suck air/dirt.
    The blue anodized forks were only used in '93 and '94 and were made by KYB. They were also used by some years of KX bikes.
    You can take the rubber piece out of the top of the air box to get more air flow. You will have to rejet the carb though.
    Make sure the needle that goes into the top of the carb is not bent at all.
    Kawasaki discontinued most of the parts on these bikes so hoard the parts you have. You can find used parts on eBay.
    Most guys run 40:1 in these bikes.
    Thanks for the video!

Because the kdxs are so rare here in the UK they won't be cheap to buy

      Compared to the usual motorcycle mechanic huh? In my 20s I was a tech at a Honda dealership and now I'm an engineer and of the guys I worked with one is head of the motorcycle sales division at Suzuki and all the others are doing very well. So the average motorcycle in my experience is very intelligent and successful I don't understand what you mean.

    • @PragmaticTornado
      @PragmaticTornado 6 років тому +1

      The average motorcycle is intelligent? Well, I mean, some new bikes have IMU's, so I guess that can be mistaken for _artifical_ intelligence, but still.
      Joking. Yeah my perception of motorcycle mechanics is that they generally seem more intellectually awake than their car counterparts. Not sure why. Maybe I've just met the good ones.

      TommyGun921 People in my area want more for a beat to shit dirtbike than a running street legal motorcycle... The lowest dirtbike i seen was 2000 dollars so whoever selling it is definitely throwing alot of sedimental value into the price.

      The bad thing is here in texas it would be faster and cheaper just to buy the actual motorcycle and have it inspected and insured and plated and you're good. So as long as the title is clean and it runs good it would be pretty quick to get it done.

    California Dual Sport veteran here. I'm assuming you're still in CA? Plating this bike will be pretty difficult. You will need to forge a sticker on the frame that says something like "This motorcycle meets all US emissions regulations for on-highway use". You can find pictures of a genuine one online. That gets you through the DMV inspection. You will also need to get a Brake and Light Inspection at a certified shop, where they check the remaining meat on your brake pads and all the turn signals, brake lights, and high and low beam headlights you have by now installed. This gets REALLY expensive so be sure you ask the DMV for all the fees upfront so you know what you're getting into.
    Costs:
    Dual sport light kit $200-500
    Brake and Light inspection $80-120 (depending on the shop)
    DMV retitling fees, registration, plate, etc $200-300
    Forging that sticker ???
    Back Registration fees ?????
    Sometimes you get lucky and get someone who doesn't know what they're doing. I have done this with many bikes ( I flip bikes for a living), and there is always a way if you pay them a lot of money and keep bothering them relentlessly. DO NOT TELL THEM IT'S A TWO STROKE. Good luck!

    So, you're not worried about all that smoke? I know its a 2-stroke, and I know you put oil in the cylinder... but man... You could make ribs w/ that smoke.

    • @taffgriff69
      @taffgriff69 6 років тому +4

      VroodenTheGreat he may have added a little extra oil to the fuel as it hasn't ran in such a long time....just as a precaution for the first start-up. that's what I would do anyway ;)

    • @VroodenTheGreat
      @VroodenTheGreat 6 років тому

      I SAW him put oil in the cylinder. I know that would make it smoke, but after several minutes of him riding it, it was still smoking. He didn't mention adding oil to the fuel. Maybe he can clear that up for us. I just hope the head or the rings aren't bad.

    • @taffgriff69
      @taffgriff69 6 років тому +1

      VroodenTheGreat even if he has to put a new piston and rings in, that's still a cheap bike. only going to get expensive if he has to replate the cylinder! I would have said that the fuel has a little more oil than usual...but only he knows that👍

      @taffgriff69 6 років тому +1

      -Slurmdaddy - that's why I said what I said! you can see the oil is darker than its meant to be. again....because the engine hasn't ran in 10years. just a precaution....it's what I would have done also!

    • @WoogieKamikaze
      @WoogieKamikaze 6 років тому +8

      Darl Musselman You can make two-strokes street legal. So long as your state will allow you to make a 4 stroke legal, you can typicly make a 2 stroke legal. It's just a pain in the rear to carry around 2 stroke oil with you.

    • @drumkid330
      @drumkid330 5 років тому

      It's enduro. Why would you not be able to get it street legal? I understand all the proof of ownership and stuff like that. But if it's a big enough engine it dont matter if it's a 2 smoker

    • @skatefast10202

      @@drumkid330 In Sweden we ride two strokes on the road all the time. 50cc which is classified as a moped for many reasons. And then 125s classified as "Lightweight Motorcycle".
